Packing hope with Selah’s Heart

When she founded Selah’s Heart in 2021 with a mission of supporting women experiencing pregnancy loss, Carolyn Ogilvie hoped the organization would take off. It has far exceeded her expectations.

“The Lord is moving mountains, and we’re expanding our reach,” she said. Selah’s Heart, named for the stillborn daughter of Ogilvie’s best friend, Lauren Walker, provides comfort for grieving families through care packages.

The community is invited to pack care boxes to donate to women in hospitals around the country on Saturday, April 26. The event will be held at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

When she began the organization, Ogilvie packed all of the boxes in her Elizabethtown home.

“The first year, I did 20 boxes, and I thought that was so cool,” she said. “Last year, we did 90 for the year. This year, I said, ‘Let’s try to double that. Go big or go home.’ Our goal is to do 200 boxes this year, with 100 packed at this event.”

As she explained, each box contains purposely curated contents.

“Every item will serve Mom physically, spiritually or emotionally.”

“We have taken so much time and consideration into every item that goes in a box,” she said. “Everything is intentionally packed, with no filler. Every item will serve Mom physically, spiritually or emotionally.”

Along with packing the boxes, participants will experience a night of prayer and community, Ogilvie said.

“We have partnered with Awake Initiative, who is experienced in leading groups in worship,” she stated. “People can come, have some refreshments that our amazing donors have provided, enjoy a time of worship and then pack the boxes.”

Items may include lactation care, books for Mom and Dad, a candle to light on the baby’s birthday, an ink pad and mold kit to create keepsakes and eye mask patches to provide practical relief to grieving mothers.

“We include the smallest little ring you’ve ever seen, an infant ring,” Ogilvie said. “People are encouraged to take pictures of their baby with the ring and then take the ring home, wear it on a chain and have a keepsake of an item their baby touched.”

Boxes are sent directly to labor and delivery units in hospitals as well as neonatal intensive care units.

Ogilvie said she’s been impressed with the generosity of the local community when it comes to supporting her mission.

On March 25, 1991, the first National Medal of Honor Day was celebrated to recognize recipients of the highest award for military valor in action. Although Lancaster County has several Medal of Honor recipients, a ceremony to mark this day has not been held in the county - until now.

Thanks to members of the Sons of Union Veterans Camp 19, two local Medal of Honor (MOH) soldiers were formally honored at a ceremony in March.

William H. Strayer was honored at his final resting place, Camp Hill Cemetery on Bruce Avenue in Mount Joy. Charles H. Fasnacht was honored at Greenwood Cemetery in Lancaster.

“The E-town and Mount Joy community has blown my mind,” she said. “I’ve walked into businesses, explaining what we do, and people have said, ‘I will give you money. I want to support our community.’”

While boxes are distributed locally, they are also shipped

“To our knowledge, this was the first commemoration on National MOH Day in the county,” shared Scott M. Fasnacht, past camp commander of the Gen. George H. Thomas Camp 19, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). “Once we did the research and identified that six of the nine MOH recipients with a Lancaster County connection were from the Civil War, we felt like it was a natural fit for the Sons of

A supportive environment

BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support. The ministry, which serves bereaved parents and grandparents, holds a number of area support groups, but once a year a special breakfast is held to give participants from around Lancaster County and others in the surrounding area who have experienced the loss of a child a chance to meet in a supportive environment.

The 2025 BASIS Breakfast will be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The buffet breakfast is free to attend. A freewill offering

will be received near the end of the event. Those wishing to attend the breakfast must register by Monday, April 21, at www.hvmi .org/upcoming-events/ basis-breakfast.

This year’s speaker will be Lynn Eib, whose talk is titled “The Truth About Grief.” Eib’s life as an award-winning reporter was interrupted by a cancer diagnosis in 1990 when she was only 36 years old. Her experience with surgery and chemotherapy inspired her to follow God’s call to begin the Cancer Prayer Support Group in 1991. The purpose of the group, now

believed to be the country’s oldest faith-based organization of its kind, was to help grievers experience the closeness of the Lord to the brokenhearted. In April of 1996, Eib became a patient advocate for her oncologist, ministering to his patients for nearly 10 years. Eib calls herself a “passionate encourager, but always a truth-teller.” Eib is also the author of several books. Her first book, “When God & Cancer Meet,” has been published in three languages and sold more than 100,000 copies. Eib lives near Philadelphia

EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.

The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.

The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner.

The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to

https://epcgolfouting.com for more information and to register.

Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.

“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher.

“We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”

Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees.

“We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley.

“Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is

Elizabethtown

a great awareness-building event for us, too.”

Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.

staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”

EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said. Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. ‘I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”

Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.

Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.

Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.

Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are

Feguer named Student of the Month

Elizabethtown Area High School has recognized senior Thomas Feguer as the Student of the Month at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) - Mount Joy campus.

Thomas, the son of Robert and Diana Feguer of Elizabethtown, was recognized for his exceptional achievements in the culinary arts program at LCCTC. He was honored for showing dedication and excellence both in and out of the classroom. He consistently goes above and beyond, always being the first to offer assistance. Thomas arrives early to organize and put away food deliveries, and he stays late to ensure that everything is cleaned and properly stored. His work ethic, positive behavior, and team spirit make him a role model for his peers. He consistently participates constructively in class, maintains good citizenship, and shows pride in his school.

The LCCTC Student of

the Month program recognizes students from its three campuses - Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street - for their achievements in academics, technical skills, and personal growth. This program celebrates students who embody responsibility, perseverance, and professionalism, reflecting LCCTC’s mission to prepare students for successful careers and lifelong learning.

on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”

Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bitesize goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equipping them with tools.”

There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving

long-term housing stability.

Courtney and her 3-yearold daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.

“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”

Medal of Honor

Union Veterans to take the lead.”

As Scott explained, the SUVCW is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of the heroes who fought and worked to save the Union. It was organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954. The Lancaster camp was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in the county ever since.

Separate ceremonies were held at each grave site for Strayer and Charles Fasnacht.

“The ceremonies were somber and respectful,” Scott remarked. “We had beautiful March weather, warm sun and a brisk breeze. … We were pleased that the Lancaster County commissioners did create a proclamation stating that March 25 was National Medal of Honor Day in the county. That was very nice.”

The ceremonies began with remarks from Brian Remmey, camp commander of SUVCW Camp 19. The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard performed the national anthem at the beginning of the program and played taps at its conclusion.

“The Red Rose Honor Guard were amazing,” Scott said. “They had a great turnout, and the detail leader was a retired three-star general - Lt. Gen. Dennis Benchoff.”

The Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard is a volunteer

organization of veterans and service members dedicated to honoring the fallen. Established in 1998 as a nonprofit, it provides free military funeral honors, including flag folding and presentation for Lancaster County veterans. Since its founding, the group has honored more than 7,500 veterans with these ceremonies, ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve.

Jodi Barone, director of the Lancaster County Department of Veteran Affairs, presented the proclamation at Camp Hill Cemetery, while MOH descendant and SUVCW Camp 19 member James Fasnacht presented it at Greenwood Cemetery.

Peter Byrne, senior vice commander for Camp 19, provided a brief history of the Medal of Honor, and Scott delivered remarks about both Strayer and Charles Fasnacht, who is Scott’s great-grandfather.

Strayer, who lived from 1847 to 1876, was a U.S. Army soldier awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry in action during the Indian Campaigns. Serving with Company B, 3rd U.S. Cavalry, he fought in an April 26, 1872, battle near Loupe Fork, Neb., alongside Buffalo Bill Cody. Despite being outnumbered, Strayer bravely engaged Sioux raiders. Strayer, who was born in Maytown and died in Bainbridge, received the Medal of Honor on May

22, 1872.

Sgt. Charles H. Fasnacht of the 99th Pennsylvania Infantry was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Civil War. On May 12, 1864, at Spotsylvania, Va., he captured the flag of the 2nd Louisiana Tigers (C.S.A.) in a fierce hand-to-hand fight. He received the Medal of Honor on April 2, 1878. Born in Lancaster County in 1842, he died in 1902.

Additional MOH recipients from the county are Milton Blickensderfer, Trustrim Connell, Isaac N. Fry, Chester Furman, John Kinsey, Robert Reem and William D. Port.

Both local National Medal of Honor Day programs included wreath-laying ceremonies.

Scott noted that he hopes to make this program an annual event.

“The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War exist to help perpetuate the memory of the soldiers, sailors and Marines who fought for the Union during the war. So we were helping to fulfill our duty by holding these commemorations,” he said. “Of course, we support the men and women who have served our nation in the military throughout its history, so we are always interested in ways that we can do that.”

He encouraged people to learn more about the Medal of Honor and its recipients by visiting the website for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, www .cmohs.org.

“They are the official organization that supports MOH recipients, and they were behind the creation of National MOH Day,” he shared.

Aggressive-driving enforcement initiative posted

Fifty-three local law enforcement agencies in Lancaster, Adams, Perry, and York counties are joining Pennsylvania State Police and approximately 300 municipal agencies statewide to conduct a targeted aggressive-driving enforcement wave that began March 17 and will run through Sunday, April 27. The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries, and deaths on

roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness.

Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions, will also be cited.

The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program

and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

For more information on aggressive driving, visit www.penndot .pa.gov/safety.

Scholarship and tuition waiver programs posted

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is accepting student applications for the 2025-26 Grow Pennsylvania Scholarship Grant Program, more commonly known as the Grow PA Grant.

The Grow PA Grant Program was authorized under Act 89 of 2024 to help reverse the trend of young Pennsylvanians seeking education and job opportunities in other states. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation, and agree to work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation.

Grant recipients will be required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months for each year they receive the grant; failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.

PHEAA will administer the program for the Commonwealth of Penn -

sylvania, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), the Independent Fiscal Office, and other stakeholders.

The application and a list of eligible programs of study or majors can be found at www.pheaa.org/ growpa.

In addition, PHEAA joins Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) in administering the Grow PA Tuition Waiver Program, which allows eligible nonresident PASSHE students pursuing in-demand occupations to pay tuition at an in-state rate rather than an out-ofstate rate.

Students selected for the Grow PA Tuition Waiver Program are required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months of each academic year for which they received a tuition waiver; failure to meet this requirement will result in the tuition waiver’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.

More information on this program is forthcoming.

Eib’s book “When God & Grief Meet: True Stories of Comfort & Courage,” published in 2021, was given to Dan Steinman, BASIS director, by a fellow church member following the 2024 breakfast. Steinman quickly recognized how the content reflected the BASIS support group material. “I prayed about it,” recalled Steinman, who noted that the woman who gave him the book recommended Eib as an “excellent speaker.” “I trusted her judgment,”

shared Steinman, who scheduled Eib for this year’s banquet.

Each year, a Wall of Remembrance, which was originally a portable photo display featuring pictures of the children who have died, is available at the breakfast. Last year, the photos from the wall were shown on a screen, but this year Steinman hopes the wall will be available to attendees in a digital format.

“We give attendees plenty of time to converse (before and during breakfast),” said Steinman, who

Steinman noted that BASIS currently holds support groups within Lancaster County in Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. The ministry is considering expanding support to include siblings who are grieving, called Kids in Grief. The program may include grief caused by divorce, separation, and illnesses. A survey on

the subject is currently available at www.hvmi .org/sib-support-grief.

BASIS also produces quarterly podcasts on a variety of grief-related topics, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/ hopeingrief.

Steinman pointed out that the purpose of the ministry is to be there for those experiencing loss of a loved one and that doing that in a variety of ways helps to spread comfort. “We just want to come beside people,” he said. “However we do that is good.”

Haley is the daughter of Michael and Kristin De Stefano of Elizabethtown. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned a place on the honor roll every year since 2022. She was recognized for her academic excellence in ninth-grade Honors General Science. She has been a key member of the Elizabethtown Mini-THON since 2021, serving as both a captain and co-overall leader. She is also a member of the Student Council, helping to plan homecoming dances and volunteering throughout the Elizabethtown community. Haley competes on the varsity track and cross-country

teams. Outside school, she received the Do the Right Thing Award for her contributions to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and she is a member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. Haley plans to attend college to major in accounting.

Steven is the son of Everald and Susan McDonald of Elizabethtown. Steven is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society.
