Talk to Mike Sernoffsky and you’ll learn he has hundreds of kids. Only two are biological, but the rest are the ones he’s influenced over the years as a wrestling coach and mentor.
Coach Serno, as the kids call him, just wrapped up his 42nd year with the wrestling program at Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD), where he has coached the boys’ team and supervised both the girls’ and the junior high teams.
On Sunday, April 26, he’ll be inducted in the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Hershey.
“I’m very honored and humbled about this award, but that’s not what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s not about the trophies or the wins and losses. It’s about whether or not these kids have become good people, if they’ve grown through the sport.”
Mike grew up outside of Buffalo, N.Y., where he wrestled, ran track and participated in cross-country in high school.

Artist Marita Hines and other members of Marietta Art Alive want people to appreciate the outdoor world. In 2021, they organized the first River Towns Plein Air event, named for the style of painting outside. This year’s event will take place from Saturday, April 18, through Sunday, May 3, in and around Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville.
The festivities will begin on April 18 with an Artist Quick Draw competition, which will run from 1 to 5 p.m.
“This year’s quick draw is sponsored by the Marietta Area Business Association and will take place during the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Front Street in Marietta,” Hines explained. The competition invites the public to see the Cherry Blossom Festival from an artist’s perspective. Artists age 18 and older will be stationed throughout the event with their easels and art supplies, painting festival scenes. Their entire artwork must be completed within a limited time frame.
People are invited to view the finished pieces at 4 p.m. at the corner of Waterford Avenue in Marietta, next to Shank’s Tavern. At that time, artist awards will be announced, and artwork will be for sale.
On Saturdays and Sundays from April 18 through May 3, the Beth Bathe Juror Exhibit will be held at MH Art Gallery, 42 W. Market St., Marietta. The gallery’s hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Bathe is well known in the national plein air circuit, and she has won awards in many prominent exhibits. She lives in

The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold a “For the Love of Baking” buffet luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at Casa di Fiori at The Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola. Doors will open at 11 a.m.
The program will feature Megan
Fraver, owner of a local micro-bakery, Sweet & Sourdough Co., and known as “the blessed blind baker,” who will share her passion for baking sourdough treats. She will present her creations, including breads, brown-butter cookies, scones, and English muffins, with samples for attendees.
The speaker will be Lynn Jordan of Kouts, Ind., who will share “Front Porches and Friendships.” Jordan is an author and chaplain, holds degrees in nursing and psychology, and is a first responder and certified health and wellness coach.
All women are invited to attend.
There is a cost per person. Reservations and payments are required by Wednesday, April 22. Those registering are asked to note the names of their guests and those they wish to sit with. Any cancellations must be made by April 22. For more details and reservations, call 717-799-0088.
The Elizabethtown Mountain Bike Team will hold an informational meeting for new riders on Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown.

The team is entering its 11th year as part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League. It is a mountain bike club that focuses on adventure, competition, and trail stewardship activities for
sixth- through 12th-grade students who live in the Elizabethtown Area School District. Students will learn bike handling skills, do strength training and conditioning, participate in trail building and stewardship, go on group rides at local trail systems, take adventure rides, and compete at a local conference and the state level.

Strasburg and has a large following throughout Lancaster County.
She began painting en plein air in 2013 and has participated as a juried artist in the River Towns Plein Air event four times. She’s also on the faculty for the 2026 National Plein Air Convention in Branson, Mo.
Bathe will serve as juror for “Artists Paint the River Towns,” the main competition of the event, which will be held from April 18 through Tuesday, April 28.
“Accepting the juror’s role was a natural progression for me,” Bathe said. “Having participated as an artist for four years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the festival’s mission and the community it fosters. It’s an honor to contribute to a local event that has been pivotal in my own artistic journey. As a juror, I can now support fellow artists by recognizing their talents and encouraging their growth.”
She noted that plein air painting requires a blend of skill, adaptability and passion and that the art form relies heavily on observation and flexibility, including the ability to navigate weather and light changes.
“Regularly painting outdoors hones your skills and helps you capture fleeting moments,” she said.
Thirty-two artists from multiple states, including Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia will participate in the competition.
“Many of the artists have been in past events and they return because they love the area and the relaxed schedule,” Hines said. “Artists have 10 days to paint and a limited paint out area on both sides of the Susquehanna.”
Fourteen awards totaling $5,000 will be presented. All work will be for sale and will be displayed in the studio space behind the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., from Thursday, April 30, through May 3. Hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. on April 30, with awards presented at 6:30 p.m.; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 1; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 2; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 3.
Along with Hines, Marietta Art Alive includes Marianne Calenda, Melissa Carroll, Joanne McIlvaine, Linda Mylin Ross and Susan Davitti Darling.
“We’re a group of volunteers who do this because we like creating opportunities for the artists, and we love the impact that art can have on small towns like ours,” Hines said.
She noted that there has been

a revival of plein air events across the country over the past decade, and the group is proud of the growth of the local festival.
“We continue to be amazed at the number of people who embrace the event and show up to view the show and purchase art,” she said. “Many visitors find a personal connection to art pieces and feel they have to take one home.”
She said the public is always surprised by what the artists choose to paint.
“Some people in our county have never really explored the river towns and are charmed by

will be partially donated by Wenger Feeds and prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ. Herr’s will provide potato chips, and Pepperidge Farm will donate the rolls. Swiss Premium Dairy will supply discounted drinks. Mars Wrigley will contribute the desserts, and Charles & Alice will donate the applesauce.
The barbecue is the only major fundraiser for the Elizabethtown Fair, which operates with no admission charge.
“Harvey makes great chicken, and proceeds help the fair meet our mission,” said Sally Nolt, fair secretary. She added that the fair’s mission is “to promote educational activities for all ages involving agriculture, creativity, community involvement, spirit and pride in an atmosphere conducive to wholesome family fun.”
Cookbooks, titled “Making Memories II,” will also be for sale at the barbecue. Filled with recipes from local residents, the cookbooks were created to celebrate the 50th Elizabethtown Fair in 2023.
The 2026 Elizabethtown Fair will run from Monday, Aug. 24,
through Saturday, Aug. 29.
Nolt said highlights will include new entertainment and Discover Ag activities, along with the return of the Hog Diggity Dog Show and camel rides.
“The fair provides activities, exhibits, contests and entertainment for all ages from our baby race to Senior Citizens Day,” she said. “Exhibits include animal, agricultural, competitive and commercial exhibits. In addition, attractions include rides and a variety of food.”
New this year, fair entries will be accepted online beginning approximately Friday, May 1. For more information, visit https:// etownfair.com.
Advance tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased from Elizabethtown Fair members and friends or by calling 717-808-1397. Tickets may also be purchased at the following Elizabethtown locations: Brandt’s Farm Supply, 601 E. High St.; Groff’s Meats, 33 N. Market St.; and B&G Lumber, 212 W. High St. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but advance purchase is not required.
The newly formed Voices of Gretna Community Chorus will hold community open sing events at Mount Gretna United Methodist Church, Fourth Street and Boehm Avenue, Mount Gretna.
The gatherings will take place on Sunday, April 19, at 1:30 p.m. and
on Monday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees will sing a few simple songs and learn about the vision for the chorus.
Anyone with a love of music is invited to participate. No audition or prior choral experience is required.
The Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, will hold a presentation titled “Three Mile Island: Past, Present, and Future” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7 p.m.
The program will be presented by David J. Allard, a nationally and internationally recognized expert in radiation protection and medical health physics who has more than 47 years of professional experience in the field.
The presentation will examine the March 1979 Unit-2 accident at Three Mile Island, including the response and recovery efforts, failures in communication at the time, and both offsite public radiation exposure and potential health impacts. The discussion will also address the psychological impact on the surrounding community, as well as extensive pre- and post-accident monitoring for radiation exposure and health effects.

In addition, Allard will explore the restart of Unit-1 in the mid-1980s, its shutdown in September 2019, and the anticipated restart expected in late 2027. The presentation will further review radiation protection standards and regulations, radioactive waste generated during operations, the cleanup and decommissioning of Unit2, and ongoing environmental surveillance efforts.

Allard retired in July 2022 from his role as director of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Radiation Protection following nearly 24 years of public service and decades of experience across medical, academic, and industrial settings.
The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, call 717-361-9382 or email info@etownhistory.com.

“I did well enough to wrestle in college, and after college, I started volunteering with my old high school,” he said. “I’ve always liked working with kids.”
While seeking a full-time teaching job, he worked as a substitute teacher and a coach in New York, and he traveled to Lancaster County to work at a YMCA summer camp. It was there he met Elaine, who would become his wife of almost 40 years.
“They’re all my sons,” he said simply. “I have kids who have coached at all levels - elementary, middle, high school and college.”
Mike and Elaine raised two of their own children, a daughter who now lives in Boston, and a son who lives in Maryland.
His son, Jared, continued Mike’s wrestling legacy with a top-four finish at the PIAA tournament and a 100-win record. He also coached at Elizabethtown College for several years.
people he has worked with over the years with contributing to his success.
“I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by a lot of wonderful people,” he said.
He’ll be accompanied by his wife, children, grandchildren, his daughter’s fiancé and other friends and family at the Hall of Fame ceremony.

GEARS will offer beginner pickleball lessons on Saturdays, May 9 and 16, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park pickleball courts, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. Pam Kaylor will teach basic techniques, rules, and strategies. All equipment will be provided. The program is for people age 16 and up.
A Mom & Kids Mini Golf Par-Tee will take place on Sunday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Adventure Sports in Hershey, 3010 Elizabethtown Road, Hershey. Moms are invited to bring their children and enjoy some quality time together. The event will include one round of private mini golf play one hour before the course opens, as well as one hour of game play in the arcade. Snacks and drinks will be served. Children may also attend with their grandma or aunt. The registration deadline is Monday, May 11.
In addition, GEARS has opened registration for its summer programs. Available from June through August, programs will include summer camps, youth activities, fitness classes, bus trips, and continuing education classes. Registration is available via the aforementioned website or phone number.
Sierra Kapcsos of Elizabethtown was among the Lebanon Valley College indoor track and field student-athletes who were recently named All-Region players by the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association. Kapcsos competed on the women’s distance medley relay team that finished eighth in the region.
Kapcsos is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. She is a graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School.
He moved to Pennsylvania, and after serving as an assistant wrestling coach at Gettysburg High School, he landed a fulltime teaching job with EASD in 1983. He taught mostly sixthgrade math, as well as social studies and science.
“I felt that I had something to give,” both as a teacher and a coach, he said. “I felt that I could make an impact on some kids, and I hope over the years, I have.”
At EASD, Mike built one of the most consistent and respected programs in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Under his direction, his squads earned 326 dual meet victories while he was head coach and 24 while he was an assistant, totaling 350 wins.
His teams have earned Lancaster-Lebanon League championship status 21 times, and 11 of his wrestlers earned state medals. Ten of the kids he coached reached 100 career wins. He also advocated for the approval of girls’ wrestling in Elizabethtown, providing mentorship and support to help the district become one of the first in the state to sponsor a girls’ wrestling program.
Over the years, Mike has coached wrestlers who have gone on to their own coaching careers, including Eric Walker, the current head coach at Elizabethtown College, and Robert Eno, the head coach at Manheim Central High School.
His daughter, Janae, is a marathoner, and she’s provided Mike and Elaine with opportunities to travel the world to watch her compete. They recently journeyed to Tokyo and went to Berlin last fall.
“I’m very proud of my own kids,” Mike said. “They have become wonderful human beings. As a parent, nothing can make you feel better than to see them be good people.”
Mike retired from classroom teaching 10 years ago, and he and Elaine, a retired elementary phys. ed. teacher, now run an antique business. They enjoy spending time with their cat, Kona, in their Elizabethtown home and with their two grandchildren. They are also active with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata.

Mike, who will turn 73 in June, is now ready for a new chapter in his life. He turned in his official retirement papers this month, and he’ll be stepping down from his coaching role, although he hopes to continue as a part-time volunteer assistant.
Throughout his long career, he’s remained focused on one thing: the kids.
“I’m always questioning myself if I’m doing well enough for the kids,” he said. “As a coach, I’ve cried many times with my kids over their accomplishments and their setbacks. As a coach, you tend to feel the pain and joy with them.”
Still, he said, don’t ask him how many wins he’s had, because he honestly doesn’t know. And he said that number doesn’t matter.
“It’s not until you reach a goal that you realize the goal is not the important thing,” he said. “The journey is the medal. That’s the reward.”
