WhenEmma Schneider twirls a baton, she’s on fire. That is, her batons are on fire - literally. Emma, a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), is a twirler with the school marching band and also competes on a national level, showcasing her ability to combine twirling up to three fire batons with acrobatics.

“I have been twirling baton since I was about 5 years old,” said Emma, noting that she began twirling at Paula’s School of Baton in Mount Joy. “I knew I wanted to twirl when I saw the sparkly costumes everyone got to wear.” She joined the EAHS marching band as a sixth-grader. “Usually, they don’t allow twirlers in the band until they are in high school,” Emma noted, but the band needed a twirler, and majorette instructor Heather Hartsough noticed something special in Emma.

“Emma is super talented,” Hartsough stated. “Her showmanship is fantastic, and you can tell she loves being out there performing for people.”

Girl on fire

Soon after joining the band, Emma decided to try twirling with fire. “I wanted to do fire baton because it’s fun and different from regular batons,” she explained. “It’s also something that everybody loves to watch.” She admits she was scared at first, but after a little practice, she was brave enough to add a second and third baton, despite a little protest from her parents, Scott and Michelle Schneider of Elizabethtown.

“My dad did say he would never let me twirl two or three batons, but I ended up twirling them,” Emma said with a laugh. Although there are risks associated with her talent, Emma said she’s only had a few minor injuries, typically when she has burned herself on the hot metal shaft of the baton.

Along with twirling, Emma incorporates what she calls “acro-like skills” into her routines. These range from walkovers to side and front aerials. “I have taken tumbling lessons with gymnastic coaches to help improve my tumbling,” she remarked. “Adding tumbling into routines kind of adds that ‘wow’ factor and is not something that every twirler can do.”

Museum exhibit highlights Elizabethtown women

Elizabethtown has no shortage of amazing women in its history, and now the Winters Heritage House Museum will showcase some of them. “From Homestead Keepers to Entrepreneurs, Elizabethtown Women Make Their Mark” will run through Friday, April 14, at the museum, 47 E. High St.

“This exhibit explores the influence women played at home, in offices, factories, restaurants, shops and more, over a span of 260 years,” said Teresa St. Angelo, who became director of the museum in December. Hope and healing for survivors of abuse

Kim Walheim and Dolores Reidenbach have a message for adult female survivors of sexual abuse: There is hope.

“On the Threshold of Hope” will be offered through Elizabethtownbased Jewel David Ministries, with licensed professional counselor Walheim leading the program and Jewel David founder Reidenbach co-leading. The group therapy will run from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays from April 12 to June 28 at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown.

“The program is focused on women who are survivors of sexual abuse/trauma that may still be struggling with certain aspects of trauma and seeking healing,” Walheim explained. “This program is not specific to childhood sexual abuse and is applicable to abuse at any age.”

As Reidenbach noted, the therapy uses a program developed by Dr. Diane Mandt Langberg, a therapist specializing in sexual trauma. “The program is an organized approach to therapeutic work as a group, using a program to share experiences while focusing on guided

Bringing art outdoors

You’ll have a chance to see artists in action when River Towns Plein Air (RTPA) is held throughout the Columbia and Marietta areas. Sixty artists will compete for $5,000 in cash awards during the juried exhibition that concludes the event, and artists will paint en plein air - outdoors - leading up to the show.

RTPA is organized by Marietta Art Alive! The nonprofit is dedicated to cultivating art, heritage and recreation in the lower Susquehanna River Valley. The activities will begin on Wednesday, April 12, when artists will paint outdoors in locations along the Lancaster and York sides of the Susquehanna River. Artists come from across Pennsylvania and as far away as Connecticut and New York, said Marita Hines, owner of MH Art Gallery and co-founder of Marietta Art Alive! Each artist will choose a location, paint his or her pieces between April 12 and Wednesday, April 19, and then display the resulting artwork from Friday, April 21, through Sunday, April 23, at Studio 264, located behind the Marietta Community

House, 264 W. Market St. Gary Tucker will be the juror for the exhibition, which is open to the public and free to attend. People will also have the opportunity to purchase the artwork.

On Saturday, April 15, RTPA will feature a Quick Draw event from 10 a.m. to noon. Open to artists of all ages, this competition will challenge community members to choose a location from a map and paint for two hours before framing their art and setting the finished product up on an easel in the block of the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St. Matt Allyn Chapman, co-owner of Curio, will be the juror for the Quick Draw. “Children are invited to participate this year, and we’ll be giving them free art supplies while they last,” Hines commented. Children’s artwork will be unframed, and children do not need to register for the Quick Draw. Participants age 18 and older may register at the Columbia Market House on the morning of the event or at www.mariettaartalive.com/qd. The rain date for the Quick Draw will be Sunday, April 16.

Proceeds from RTPA will be used to fund more art events in the com-

munity, Hines said. “The plein air event brings in hundreds of new and returning visitors to the river towns,” she noted. “The quality of the artwork at the show continues to get

better each year, draw in more patrons and art lovers.” This year, in addition to the plein air event, Marietta Art Alive! was able to fund two themed juried art shows - “Song for Autumn” and “Spaces Within.”

RTPA also provides an opportunity for collaboration with other local organizations, Hines remarked. “Create Columbia organized the Quick Draw for us this year,” she stated. “All proceeds from that event go to their nonprofit organization. Over time, it is our desire to get more organizations and businesses in the river towns involved in this event.”

The exhibition and sale will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 21; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 23. For more information, visit www.mari ettaartalive.com.

treatment to make progress in processing the trauma and exploring methods to apply toward peace and mental wellness,” she said.

Jewel David Ministries last ran the program in 2017, but when the counseling team members realized that the majority of clients had some sexual trauma in their history, they decided to relaunch the course.

Reidenbach hopes participants will begin to heal in a safe space among others who have had similar experiences. “Sometimes in group, it is the first time they have told their story out loud or in a safe environment,” she noted.

The program is also meant to help survivors realize the abuse is not their fault, Walheim said. “They have been taught to be silent, have been shamed, blamed and tormented through time,” she remarked. “But these ladies are so strong, and they are survivors of battles that most will not fathom or comprehend. This program helps them see their strength and find

healing in so many facets.”

She added that she knows firsthand that the program works, having led it before. “I have been fortunate to see a lot of healing and growth from the darkest moments, freedom from shame and guilt, relational bonds and fellowship that have deep connections and spiritual reconciliation in these

Emma said baton twirling has opened up a world of opportunities for her, from traveling to competitions as far away as Tennessee and Georgia to teaching younger kids how to twirl. She twirls at school football games and at numerous community events, and she competes nationally through Paula’s School of Baton with the Drum Majorettes of America on the elite level.

As she looks toward the future,

Emma said she hopes to continue twirling for a college marching band, and she noted that she’ll never tire of wowing a crowd. “The audience in the stands at football games goes crazy when I juggle three fire batons,” she said. “There is no better feeling than to have parents, students and even kids from the opposing team cheering for you and complimenting your performance when you come off.”

There’s an occupational hazard Mary Ann Steinhauer faces as the leader of the Council of Friends of Public Libraries. “People will stop me in the street and ask, ‘Are you having

groups and in individual work,” she stated.

Although the program is a Christ-centered, faith-based program, anyone is welcome, Walheim emphasized. “Those considering the program should ask a lot of questions and reach out to me or Dolores and address any and all

possible concerns they have,” she said, “so that they can make an educated decision as to if this is a good fit for them.”

Dugoni is perhaps best known for his crime mysteries and legal thrillers. His Tracy Crosswhite police series has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. Krystal Turner-Childs, the first Black female appointed deputy commissioner of staff in the Pennsylvania State Police, the exhibit features biographies, photographs, articles and items from the women who made Elizabethtown what it is today.

St. Angelo got the idea for the exhibit when she was volunteering at the Elizabethtown Historical Society. Impressed by the accomplishments of her fellow volunteers, she began digging deeper into Elizabethtown’s history. “I started researching, and I came across so many strong, courageous and bold women,” she recalled.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

display board in the exhibit invites visitors to add information about important women in their lives or add items to the exhibit, and children who visit will have the opportunity to decorate bookmarks of sayings from famous women.

Putting the exhibit together has inspired St. Angelo. “I have learned so much,” she remarked. “I am in awe of these women, and I’m so glad to be able to spotlight their accomplishments. If you want to be amazed and inspired by the women who contributed so much to Elizabethtown, please come see this exhibit.”

SPRING COIN SHOW

Using the museum’s on-site Seibert Genealogy Research Library and relying on information provided by local women, St. Angelo began putting the exhibit together. Through her research, she learned some interesting facts she’s displaying in the exhibit. “Esther Winters was a pharmacist in town, and she liked to delight children by putting amazing things in her display window,” St. Angelo shared. “She used to go to New York City with another local shop owner, and many of the items were props from Broadway plays.” Some of those objects are on display at the exhibit.

Recipes from Elizabethtown women, including a book of recipes from Elizabethtown College, are featured, as well as historic items such as a rug beater, a coffee grinder and dresses from the 1800s.

A tapestry dating to 1873 was shipped to the museum from a family in Florida that can trace its roots back to the founding of the town, and St. Angelo found matches from the former Aunt Sally’s Restaurant on eBay.

St. Angelo also worked with Denise Grove at the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce to highlight local female business owners. A

“Robert Dugoni is a really great writer,” Steinhauer said. “I read ‘The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell’ in two days. I could not put it down.”

She noted that the Council of Friends has been offering author talks for 22 years, and the events always draw a crowd. “Typically, we have

Chapel, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown, and on Saturdays, they will meet from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. The class is open to individuals age 14 and older, and no experience is necessary.

Canine Manners Class Level I will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, April 6 to 27, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. anywhere from 300 to 500 people that come,” she said, stating that the church makes a perfect venue. “Everybody will be able to hear and see what’s going on. There are two big screens and a great sound system.”

The Council of Friends of Public Libraries, founded in 2000, is made up of volunteers who are committed to promoting reading countywide. The author events are fundraisers for the public libraries in the county, and to date, the group has raised more than $140,000. This year, the Council of Friends has established a partnership with Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg, which will provide copies of Dugoni’s backlist books to purchase

at the event.

Steinhauer noted that the author event will include time for questions from the audience. “It’s always a life-

altering experience to actually hear the author and ask questions or hear questions being asked,” she said. “To be in the presence of people who are so creative and someone who provides so much to us in terms of reading, it’s really incredible. … I find that it’s really a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, and when people leave, they are inspired. I have yet to see where that hasn’t happened.”

Sports Hall of Fame event will honor local athletes

Lancaster and York counties have no shortage of talented athletes, and six of them will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in April. The Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 44th Awards Night and Dinner on Saturday, April 29, at the Bachman Center, located on the campus of Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. This year’s inductees are Michael Burke IV, Ben Guiles, Thomas Haines, John Little, Michael Terwilliger and Betty Bare Windstein. “We have about 200 members in the Susquehanna Chapter, and each member gets a ballot and votes for six nominees,” explained Michael Gerfin, president of the chapter. “We had 10 people nominated this year. The top six are inducted each year.” He noted that this year’s class will include the 300th inductee in the Susquehanna Valley Chapter. Each inductee will receive a plaque commemorating his or her induction. This year’s program is dedicated to Charles “Rich” Gerfin, longtime treasurer, who passed

away in 2022. In addition to the six inductee awards, other awards will be presented at the event - the Jimmy Sheckard Meritorious Service Award and the William Mable Most Courageous Athlete Award.

Burke, who was a football star at Columbia High School, was a multisport athlete, playing on the baseball, track and basketball teams as well. During Burke’s senior year in 2011, Columbia won the District III championship. He went on to play football for Villanova University.

Guiles, a football player and graduate of Columbia High School, led the Lancaster-Lebanon League in rushing with 1,665 yards in 2002. At Lebanon Valley College, he became the school’s all-time leading rusher, and during his senior year, he earned an honorable mention as a District III All-American.

Haines wrestled for Solanco High School from 2010 through 2014. He was a four-time section champion and a four-time Lancaster-Lebanon League champion and won four PIAA AAA state championships. He also wrestled for The Ohio State University and Lock Haven University, and he is currently the assistant wrestling coach at Elizabethtown College.

Little was also a wrestler for

Bluegrass jam event planned

Solanco High School, winning District III and regional championships in 1974. At Millersville State College, he became a two-time Division III All-American wrestler. He spent 36 years as head wrestling coach at Solanco, retiring in 2018.

Terwilliger was a multi-sport athlete for Cocalico High School, playing on the 1974 Lancaster-Lebanon League champion basketball team and serving as quarterback for the football team. A four-year starter quarterback at East Stroudsburg State College, he has served as offensive coordinator for East Stroudsburg’s football team since 2001.

Windstein was a National Swimming Championship athlete and also set four national collegiate records as a swimmer for West Chester State College. In 1972, she was an Olympic qualifier in swimming. She coached swimming for 40 years, serving as assistant swim coach at Hempfield High School from 2000 to 2011.

Tickets are required to attend the awards ceremony and dinner and must be purchased by mailing a check before Wednesday, April 12. No tickets will be sold at the door. For more information or to order tickets, contact Michael Gerfin at mgerfin@comcast.net.

Model Railroad Club sets open house

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host a Music by the Fireplace bluegrass jam on Sunday, April 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring stringed instruments. The program is free and open to the public. Preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will host an open house on Saturday, April 1, and Sunday, April 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Railroad Club building located on the grounds of Masonic Village on Freemason Drive, Elizabethtown. Once on the campus, visitors should follow the directional signs. The club offers seven different scale layouts

covering more than 1,600 feet of track. Layouts range from those in G scale, also called garden scale, to the tiny Z scale layouts, which can fit in a briefcase.

The train club has operated on the Masonic Village campus since 1997. For more information, visit www.mvetrainclub.com or www.facebook.com/Masonic villageMRRC.
