GEARS To Offer Fun For All At Eggstravaganza GEARS will hold its annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at the Elizabethtown Community Park, located off Mount Joy Street in Elizabethtown. GEARS once again will partner with the Elizabethtown Lions Club, Elizabethtown Rotary Club and other sponsors for this event. Egg hunt times and participants’ age ranges are as follows: 10:15 a.m., ages
6 months to 2 years; 10:30 a.m., ages 3 to 6 years; 10:45 a.m., ages 7 to 9 years; 11:15 a.m., ages 10 to 12 years; 11:30 a.m., senior citizens age 60 years and up; and 11:45 a.m., youths and adults ages 13 to 59 years. Prizes and candy will be available for each egg hunt, and a cash grand prize will be awarded in the egg hunt for adults. There is a fee to participate in the egg hunt for adults. All
other egg hunts are free of charge. Additional activities will be available for a nominal fee each; these activities will include a moon bounce, a barrel train

Donegal Trout Unlimited will offer “ Women and Waders: An Introduction to Fly Fishing for Women” on Saturday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Elizabethtown. Pam Williams will lead the workshop. The event will offer an opportunity for ladies to connect with other ladies regarding fly fishing and cold water conservation. Participants will learn the basics of fly fishing or brush up on their skills. The program will include an introduction to all the aspects of fly fishing, including casting; fly tying; knot tying; equipment, such as rods, reels, waders, boots, and more; and aquatic insect identification. Information on Trout Unlimited’s conservation mission will also be available. Admission is free. Elizabethtown Bowlers Finish Sixth In States bowling team, which made the 30-minute trek east to 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata on March 16 to partake in the Pennsylvania State High School Bowling Championships. Behind the work of Abby Chaffins, Eryn Moore, Alaina Telenko, Hannah Griffie and Elizabeth Vuxta, the Lady Bears claimed sixth place once all the qualifying dust settled from the 12-team field. Elizabethtown’s qualifying score of 3,469 put the Lady Bears just over 200 pins outside the four finalists and a mere 14 pins behind fifth-place Burrell. Chaffins paced the team during the three regular qualifying games, posting scores of 177, 201 and 167 for a 545 series. Moore finished one pin back thanks to her games of 169, 190 and 185. Telenko was the final kegler to crack the 500pin barrier, finishing with 500 on the nose after games of 189, 169 and 142. Griffie and Vuxta finished within two pins of each other after posting matching 144 scores in their respective opening games. Griffie followed with games of 139 and 140 to collect a 423 series while Vuxta closed out with games of 130 and 147 for a 421 series.

Set in the late 1800s, “From the Ashes” is a story about six coworkers that focuses on struggles that can be hard to discuss, including rejection, fear, anger, addiction, abuse, self-hatred, and depression. now the event is all about books. “We want to recycle these books and get them in the hands of people,” she enthused, “and we have a wide selection of books.” Aware that book sale enthusiasts can also become hungry, volunteer Sirenda McNece will assist with the food table, where coffee and baked goods will be available for takeout. “ We call it Food To Go,” she said, “and we’ll also have American, Italian, and turkey subs, while supplies last.” McNece got involved with the sale because she wanted to be more involved with the church and she loves books. “I read so much as a girl that my parents used to ground me from reading,” she said with a laugh. Proceeds from the sale will go to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), a not-for-profit agency that provides apartment or financial services to people in the Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown areas who are experiencing homelessness, are at risk of homelessness, or are otherwise in need, according to the agency’s website, www.echoslancaster.org/. ECHOS was recommended to Hershey by the MJCOG church council as a worthwhile recipient of funds.
Hershey, who used to sort books for the sale in her home, now sorts and prices books in the church’s basement. Dozens of boxes have already been prepared. “I check the condition of each book and put the price inside the cover. I like sorting: It’s sort of like opening up a present,” Hershey said with a smile. When considering what her favorite part of the church’s book sales has been, Hershey paused, then shared, “It’s very rewarding when someone asks for a specific author and I can help by finding the right book.” Categories of books will include history, science, romance, inspirational, children’s, and special interest books such as cookbooks, craft books, how-to manuals, and more. In addition, there will be a special section of books such as classic Little Golden Books, volumes in Braille, vintage hymnals, and complete sets of Bible commentaries. Record albums - both 33 1/3s and 45s - will also be available, as will DVDs, CDs, audio books, and VHS. When asked why people should attend the sale, Hershey replied, “The books will be very inexpensive.” McNece chimed in, “And the proceeds go to a good

Group Project Focuses On Distracted Driving The PAWS ... and Think Club from Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) entered a “Just Drive” Public Service Announcement (PSA) video contest in November 2018. For the contest, students focused their efforts on showing the possible outcomes of distracted driving. Distracted driving is defined as the act of driving while engaging in other activities that take the driver’s attention away from the road. The club’s video specifically focuses on texting and driving and its implications. Club members gathered facts on distracted driving, and, with the assistance of Madelyn Fanella, an EAHS senior who is interested in furthering her education in video production, club members developed plans for video shots. The club received a stipend from contest sponsors for production costs and used a portion of the funds to purchase an action camera to enhance the video quality. The club plans to use the camera for future projects as well as loan it to other school clubs. With the storyboard and equipment secure, the next step was enlisting first responders. Amy McEvoy, the PAWS … and Think liaison from Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), recruited Northwest Regional Police Department and Northwest EMS for the project. The PAWS ... and Think Club at Elizabethtown Area High School has created a video for a “Just Drive” Public Service Announcement video contest. The top three finalists will be announced on April 5. Those involved in the project included Officers Whitebread, Bryant, and Tobias; Chip Stambaugh; Madelyn Fanella; Chloe Garner; Amy McEvoy; Ken Boland; Chaz Mower; Julian Richer; and Suzette Kreider. Police Mark Mayberry and Northwest EMS operational director Suzette Kreider showed commitment to the project. Filming took place in early January at the intersection of College Avenue and Campus Road in Elizabethtown. With each department’s assistance and participation, shots were filmed both there and at Northwest Regional’s headquarters. After several weeks of postproduction, the completed PSA was submitted to the contest organizers. The club is among the top six finalists, and the top three contestant finalists will be announced on Friday, April 5, at an event at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Prizes

The Mount Joy Athletic Association (MJAA) will celebrate its 50th anniversary during its opening-day event on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. at Kunkle Field, 301 Manheim St., Mount Joy. The MJAA has produced six players drafted by Major League Baseball (MLB). Two of them have played in the major leagues, with one being named to the MLB Hall of Fame. One of the six is currently an MLB coach. Activities will include a silent auction, wiffle ball games and the honoring of past members. Admission is free, but attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Mount Joy Food Bank. “We want all alumni, as well as anybody in the community, to attend,” said Stacey Crider, MJAA secretary. She noted that planning for the event began last fall. The event will begin with a welcome ceremony on the baseball field, where plaques will be handed out to past coaches and others by members of the 50th anniversary committee. A representative from the committee will then provide a history of the MJAA. “We are hopefully going to form a ‘50’ on the field and take a photo with a drone,” noted Crider. After the ceremony, there will be wiffle ball games for various age groups. Players can register on the day of the event to participate. Visitors will also be able to bid on silent auction items during the day. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the wiffle ball games at approximately 4:30 p.m. Silent auction items will include gift baskets,
an autographed Barnstormers baseball and a gift certificate for rock climbing. “The big item (has been donated) by Ron Wagner, who has been part of the association from the beginning. He is still on our board today,” Crider explained. “He made a shadow box with a Donegal High School baseball jersey signed by Mike Sarbaugh, third-base coach for the Cleveland Indians; Chris Heisey, who played for the Washington Nationals; and (MLB Hall of Famer) Bruce Sutter.” All three men, who are members of the MJAA Hall of Fame, also autographed baseballs for inside the shadow box. Vendors, including representatives from home-based businesses, will be on-site, and the MJAA concession stand will be open, offering root beer floats, as well as the famous Kunkleburger, which is a large hamburger on a Kaiser roll that comes with toppings. There will also be a display of photos and memorabilia. Those who would like to contribute items to the exhibit are asked to email mountjoyAA@gmail.com. The MJAA was established in 1969 by the merging of Kunkle Oil 12U and 14U baseball teams in Mount Joy with other sponsored teams from nearby Florin. Crider, who learned more about the history of the MJAA from Barry Etsell, the first vice president of the organization, noted that a few years later, the MJAA approached the Mount Joy Borough Council to ask for $1,500 to finance the cost of building dugouts, the concession stand and bathrooms. Through its participation in the the Veterans and Family Memorial Care (VFMC) Operation Valentine program, Charles F. Sportsmen Plan Events The Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has posted its upcoming schedule. The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School (YCS) will take place from Sunday, July 21, to Saturday, July 27, at the Northern Lancaster County Fish and Game Protection Association in West Cocalico Township. The school is open to youths ages 14 to 16. “(The Race Against Racism) is another way to forward the mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” explained Bob Hebert, Lancaster YWCA director of communications and community engagement. “It’s a fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.” The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a participant needs to have taken part one or have
other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the

Will feels the tales told by his often-absent father were simply myths. He has even stopped believing the story of how his father proposed to his mother, Sandra, played by Claire Wolfe, in a field of daffodils. But, as Edward begins to lose his battle with cancer, Will decides to visit, and with encouragement from his wife, Josephine, played by Aria Yang, Will sets off to learn the truth. “Will’s wife, Josephine, (tells him), ‘If you understand the stories, you will understand the man,’” said Wagner, who added that the audience will see the stories come to life before their eyes in a tale that employs both comedy and drama. The musical will have the 35member cast singing and dancing in styles that range from classic Broadway to country and folk for the story, which is set in Alabama and requires some characters to put on Southern accents. “The score is beautiful,” said Wagner. “There are ballads that bring the emotions of the characters out.” See “Big Fish” pg 13

YWCA Lancaster To Find New CEO YWCA Lancaster is preparing to bid farewell to CEO Michelle McCall, who has announced plans to transition in 2019 from YWCA Lancaster in order to pursue other business interests. McCall served as CEO for more than three years, first on an interim basis and then
begun placing dogs in educational facilities. Within the past year, 15 dogs have been placed in central Pennsylvania. Facility dogs help engage students during school, with the goal of helping them remain focused on their work, thereby creating a viable learning environment. United Disabilities Services (UDS) Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization committed to serving people with disabilities in Pennsylvania, has been accredited by the Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a worldwide coalition of nonprofit programs that train and place assistance dogs. ADI’s objectives are to establish and promote standards of excellence in all areas of assistance dog acquisition, training and partnership; facilitate communication and learning among member programs; and educate the public on the benefits of assistance dogs and ADI membership. Assistance dog organizations that pass ADI’s accreditation process become ADI Accredited Member programs and are assessed every five years to ensure they meet the highest standards in the industry. In 2018, UDS moved its corporate headquarters to a new location, allowing for substantial growth in its service dogs program. UDS Service Dogs specializes in dogs to assist individuals, including veterans with mobility disabilities. The dogs are trained to provide services such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, helping to remove jackets and socks, retrieving and delivering items, and pushing elevator buttons. They also provide affection and companionship. UDS Service Dogs also trains dogs to assist individuals with autism. These dogs’ job is to help with pressure, interrupting behavior, and alerting or finding an adult. The UDS Service Dogs program is growing and looking for new clients to match with the specially trained dogs. UDS Service Dogs has also

She is very bubbly and friendly,” noted Wolfe, who added that the more mature Sandra is a woman of extreme calm. “It’s a 180-degree switch,” Wolfe said. As Edward, Dominguez is looking forward to playing the character he called “super explosive.” “(Edward is) really imaginative,” said Dominguez. “It can be hard to embody his character. He’s got a lot of grit, but he knows how to (have fun).” Dominguez likes how the character uses his stories and personality to influence and inspire others. “I really enjoy (the

Mozart and Da Ponte worked at breakneck speed to meet the deadline for the first performance on Oct. 29. On the evening of Oct. 28, Da Ponte pointed out they were missing an overture, so Mozart worked through the night to complete the overture. Today, “Don Giovanni” is a staple of opera repertoire. Chopin was a conservatory graduate of 19 when he composed his Piano Concerto No. 2, one of two piano concertos Chopin wrote to showcase his virtuosity. Chopin was embarking on a move from Poland to Paris to further his career, and it was customary for musicians to compose a work that displayed their talents in preparation for
auditions. The concertos feature elements of Chopin’s signature style of romanticism. Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony was inspired by his visit to the ruined chapel of Holyrood Castle near Edinburgh during a grand tour of Scotland when the composer was in his early 20s and already an accomplished musician. After visiting the castle, Mendelssohn detailed the adventure in his journal and followed the entry with 10 measures of music, which later became the main theme of his third symphony. The piece took 10 years to complete and was introduced in 1842. The success of a performance in London led to Mendelssohn’s receiving permission to dedicate it to one of his admirers, England’s Queen Victoria. To purchase tickets, readers

The Manufacturers’ Association of southcentral Pennsylvania has announced that area television traffic anchor and reporter Corinne Lillis will be the master of ceremonies of the association’s upcoming 113th annual event on Thursday, April 25, at The Pullo Center, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., York. Lillis, who joined a local television station in the spring of 2016, has a broadcasting degree from Millersville University. Her first job out of college was as the host of a morning talk show at a radio station just outside Philadelphia. The evening’s guest and keynote speaker will be noted oceanographer and explorer Robert Ballard, who discovered the remains of the Titanic and many other notable shipwrecks, including John F. Kennedy’s PT109. Much of Ballard’s talk will center on the pioneering of teleoperated robots that are beginning to impact the manufacturing industry. The program will feature musical numbers followed by the national anthem performed by the Keystone Capital Chorus. Known throughout southcentral Pennsylvania for its blend of harmonies, the group serves as the Harrisburg Chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society. With more than 80 members, it competes in the western division of the Mid-Atlantic District and has won the division championship eight of the past 12 years. The chorus has been
performing for more than 65 continuous years. The association will also recognize several regional manufacturers for their 2018 contributions either to their business organization or their local community. Categories will include Manufacturer of the Year, Community Investor, and Manufacturing Innovator. The organization will also present its Partner of the Year Award and the first-ever Manufacturing Trailblazer Award, honoring an early manufacturer who contributed significantly to the strength of today’s regional manufacturing economy. Award contenders may be nominated by the public, provided the company is a current member of The Manufacturers’ Association.
