Building a winning chess club

When Cameron Elder, now a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School, transferred schools three years ago, he realized his new school didn’t have a certain club he was interested in joining.

“I transferred from Warwick, and I noticed E-town didn’t have a chess club,” he recalled. “I went to Mr. Caputo and said, ‘Hey, I want to start a chess club.’”

Joel Caputo, who teaches business, computer and information technology at the high school, was not well-versed in chess, but he was happy to serve as the club’s adviser.

From the beginning, Cameron worked with his friend and fellow current senior Caleb Fuge to get the club up and running.

Since then, the boys have grown the group to about 13 students, who practice one or

two days a week after school and participate in tournaments both locally and beyond. The club finished its season with a 13-3 record, and several members of the team, including Cameron and Caleb, will compete in the 2025

Pennsylvania State Scholastic Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 29 and 30, in Harrisburg.

“I love chess. I love winning, and I love playing because it gives me something to do when I get bored,” said Cameron, who has been playing the game for seven

years. “I really like this club, because it’s not a club that you’re required to go to every day. It’s one of the more laid-back clubs, so if you just want to play for fun, it’s a good club to join.”

Caleb learned to play chess with his great-grandfather, who introduced him to the game.

“I’ve been playing chess since I was 5,” he recalled, noting that his great-grandfather had a unique teaching method. “He taught me it from the aspect of the pieces are like people. They have their own jobs. They do certain things that some people can do, and some people cannot. It really helped me to learn the general aspects of chess.”

Caleb especially enjoys that the chess club at Elizabethtown provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the game.

“The main reason I’m in this club is to help others,” he said. “I really enjoy seeing other people’s

“We’re helping girls get a sense of who they are,” said Laura Pepper, educational institute program coordinator for the Girls’ Leadership Camp. “A camp like this is important because girls don’t have a lot of in-person experiences with an all-around focus and an opportunity to connect their lives to the lives of other girls and get to know them in a meaningful way.”

The camp, which is organized by the PA Masonic Youth Foundation, will be held from Sunday, July 20, through Friday, July 25, at the Patton Campus, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. It is open to girls ages 10 to 14.

This is the third year for the camp, which evolved from a brainstorming session to promote female leadership.

“We want girls to be able to take the lead in their lives, their

When young people ages 8 to 12 who attend Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Power Camp asked for more sports to be offered at camp, area representatives Diana Roth, Kyle Martin, and Emily Johnson responded. This year, the New Holland camp will offer baseball and track and field in addition to five other sports, and the Manheim camp will offer lacrosse, in addition to six other sports.

The New Holland Power Camp

will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, from Monday, June 16, to Thursday, June 19. The Manheim Power Camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17.

Roth said that the theme for this year’s camps is “Glory,” based on II Corinthians 3:18. The faith-based curriculum will focus on the question “What are you chasing?” by examining

community and beyond,” Pepper said.

Each year’s camp has a theme, and this year will be focused on women’s history, with a specific daily emphasis. The first day will highlight female role models throughout history. Day two will spotlight leadership qualities. On day three, girls will discuss connections, friendships and social pressures. Day four will focus on courage and resilience, and the camp will wrap up with sessions on aspirations and goals.

Along with sessions where girls can meet and interact with local leaders such as small business owners, campers will enjoy arts and crafts, including creating tiedye shirts.

“Girls like to sign each other’s shirt at the end of the week, sort of like signing a yearbook,” Pepper said.

Campers will also have opportunities to use the indoor, heated swimming pool, play games and participate in STEM activities.

Representatives from Samaritan Counseling Center will host mindfulness activities, and campers will learn to make and decorate French pastries with the owner of Elizabethtown-based Valosh Pâtisserie.

More than 40 girls attended

the first year’s camp, and while enrollment was down slightly last year, Pepper is optimistic about filling the spaces this year. The camp can accept up to 45 girls, and a few scholarships are available for families in need.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the camp, and people can help out for a day or all week.

About half of the campers return each year, a good sign that the program is making an impact, Pepper said. All of the campers in the past have come from Pennsylvania, but the camp is open to any girls in the age range.

“We want the girls to get to know themselves better and to think about their future,” Pepper stated, noting that the target age for the campers is intentional. “This is a great age for girls to begin to get a sense of themselves and what direction they want their lives to go in.”

The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation is headquartered in Elizabethtown. The organization hosts several youth groups for girls, including Job’s Daughters, Rainbow for Girls and the Ruth Mitchell Tucker Girls Youth Department.

The Girls’ Leadership Camp provides opportunities for girls to learn leadership skills, make friends and have fun, Pepper said.

“Our mission is to serve and advance opportunities for youth, as they are our future leaders,” she noted. “We’re gently allowing girls to experience a lot of different areas, become informed about their own lives and really connect with other girls in person.”

The registration deadline for the camp is Monday, June 30. To learn more or to register, visit https:// pmyf.org/girls-leadership-camp.

the quest for individual glory versus reflecting God’s glory. In addition to baseball and track and field, the New Holland camp will offer basketball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, and soccer. Roth and Martin are the camp directors. The Manheim camp, which is directed by Johnson, will offer baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling, in addition to lacrosse.

Camps begin at 9 a.m. each day and run until 3:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme. Although the themes for this year’s camps have not been chosen, Roth noted that Wacky Wednesday is always a favorite. Each day begins with worship featuring a worship band and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The speaker at the New Holland camp will be Petra pastor Brian Coles,” reported Martin. The

campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, enjoying a snack, and joining in a closing assembly. Volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school, college, or club coaches, and many serve for both weeks. Interns assist the directors and coaches. According to Roth, interns who have helped out at camp previously “know the drill,” so they will be given more leadership responsibility. “They will lead debrief time at the end of each day and be in charge of group competitions and games,” explained Martin. Huddles, groups of five to seven students,

are overseen by a huddle leader. Huddle leaders are high school students who lead, guide, and encourage campers. About 50 huddle leaders are needed for a camp of 120 to 150 students, which is the number expected at both camps this year.

Student participants are also given the chance to take part in Coins for Campers, a competition between boys and girls to raise funds for similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. Martin stated that in 2024, the goal was to raise $5,000 for the other camps and that the goal was surpassed.

Campers at Fellowship of Christian Athletes Power Camps practice athletic skills.

success. I want to be a leader and set my teammates up to do their best.”

He emphasizes that while chess has a reputation as a difficult game,

it can be played by anyone.

“A lot of people think chess is a smart person’s game,” he said. “It’s really not. It’s pattern recognition and

being confident in yourself. … I think the reason why it’s so misconstrued is because it’s really hard to master chess. I’m not going to sugarcoat that. But anyone can play chess.”

Jessica Henry, who teaches gifted students at the high school and serves as the club’s co-adviser, said students in the club come from all sorts of backgrounds.

“This club is fully inclusive,” she noted. “It doesn’t matter if you’re neurodivergent or in a mainstream classroom. Everybody gets a space, and everyone gets to feel comfortable here.”

Both Cameron and Caleb have extensive experience with chess - and impressive win records. This season, Cameron went 16-0 in their league. Caleb was also undefeated, with 13 wins and three draws. When he played Cameron individually, however, his teammate bested him.

Both boys have competed in numerous tournaments, and their visit to states later this month will be their third time there.

For freshman Hannah Szobocsan,

the club is a new experience. She joined just a few weeks ago.

“I’ve always been interested in chess, but I have never played before,” she said.

She was a bit worried about how she’d do with the game.

“I am bad at checkers or any game that involves strategy at all,” she commented, “but I’m having fun. I actually like the strategy involved in chess, and I like that you have to think ahead.”

Caleb, who has a coach who helps him improve his chess skills, said he’s inspired by chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, a five-time world champion.

He also said he loves chess even if he doesn’t win, and he points out that losing has merit.

“Losing is part of life,” he said. “I have lost games, even if Cameron and I have not lost in the school chess league. If you don’t lose, you’re never going to get better.”

He also loves that chess is truly a game for anyone.

“It’s 0-0 at the start, and you both have the same pieces. You start in the same position,” he said. “It’s really about how much skill you have, how much knowledge you have. I feel like that applies to life as well. Sometimes in life, you just want to go through the motions. You just want to move the pieces. But, if you just start thinking things through, being intentional and thinking ahead, you can achieve a lot.”

Above all, Caleb said, chess provides an opportunity to build community.

“You can play chess anywhere, with anyone,” he said. “People from all different walks of life can pick up chess, and that’s really the beauty of it.”
