Support global efforts at a chicken barbecue

On Saturday, April 5, you can pick up a delicious meal and support two organizations with a global impact at the same time.

Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, will hold a chicken barbecue from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 5. Meals will be available for pickup at the church portico.

Each meal will consist of a half-chicken prepared by Dennis Peters, a baked potato, homemade baked beans, homemade

pepper slaw, a roll, applesauce and homemade cookies. Tickets are not required for the meals, which will be available by donation while supplies last.

The chicken barbecue will support two organizations - the Haiti Medical Project and the Center for Caring, Empowerment and Peace Initiatives (CCEPI).

“The Haiti Medical Project falls under the umbrella of the Church of the Brethren,” explained Sandy Brubaker, witness commission member of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren. “It offers mobile medical clinics for remote villages by Haitian doctors and nurses. The organization also has classes to educate mothers of

young children and builds clean water systems and latrines.” The organization began after a 2010 earthquake in Haiti that killed an estimated 350,000 people.

Its funding is provided in part by grassroots efforts throughout the United States.

CCEPI is a nonprofit organization started by Dr. Rebecca Dali of Nigeria, Brubaker explained.

“Nigeria has been suffering from terrorist attacks, leaving thousands of people displaced, many widows and orphans,”

Brubaker said. “Dr. Dali provides schooling for widows, teaching them skills to help them provide for their families. She organizes distributions of bulk foods to vulnerable people. Her work has brought relief to more than 2 million people.” The organization is in the process of building a medical center to help with needs in the large surrounding area and to offer trauma care and education.

Hosting the chicken barbecue is important to the church members, Brubaker said, because

“I feel we have the best book sale in the area,” said Pat Casper, describing the Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library’s March Book Sale. “It’s just the right size, not overwhelming but still big. The books are sorted into categories to help you not waste time. The books are all in good condition, and the space is very comfortable.”

The book sale will be held from Tuesday, March 25, through Saturday, March 29, in the lower level of the library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Tuesday will be a preview day from 2 to 7 p.m., with a small admission charge for nonmembers of the Friends group; Friends members will be admitted for free. Hours on Wednesday, March 26 through Friday, March 28, will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Books will be available in a

wide range of fiction and nonfiction categories, including history, biography, cookbooks, paperbacks, trade books and children’s books. A variety of CDs and DVDs will also be sold.

“This is a great sale to get lots of children’s books,” Casper said.

SkillsUSA is not “just a club” to members of the Willow Street chapter.

Several students who attend the Willow Street campus of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) believe the organization offers a chance to be part of something special.

“SkillsUSA is the No. 1

workforce development organization for students,” explained Airamis Condé, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, who is one of the chapter’s five officers. “(It) empowers students to become skilled professionals and careerready leaders. SkillsUSA encourages students to step out of their comfort zone, have fun, and be themselves.”

For three decades, LightShine Ministries in Mount Joy has been bringing the love and light of God to the people of Alaska. You can support this mission at a dinner celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary.

The meal will be held at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will start with appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., members of LightShine Ministries will share testimonies and discuss the 17 mission teams serving this year as well as long-term goals of the ministry, said Nancy Shaffer, who is organizing the event. Dinner will feature roast turkey, stuffing, baked ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes and a large assortment of homemade desserts.

a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.

“For 30 years, we have been offering assistance to brothers and sisters in Christ by helping them build His Kingdom in the hearts of the people in Alaska,” Shaffer said. “We offer short-term missionary opportunities for people who love people, love the outdoors and desire to serve in places where churches need help.”

ties to financially support our ministry by just attending the dinner and giving a donation.”

LightShine International Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Tom Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state. Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With

“Our calling is unique,” Shaffer said. “Men and women who do not feel gifted to preach or start churches have been encouraged throughout the years by using their hands to serve the Lord by working with us. We make it our goal not only to minister to the church we are serving, but also to encourage our team members as well.”

She invites anyone who is interested in discovering more about the ministry to come to the dinner.

“This is our first fundraising dinner for our ministry,” she said. “The dinner is to raise funds to complete our mission base located in Palmer, Alaska. The projects include finishing the upstairs of the house, building a garage for the mission base director and his wife living at the base and then building a main garage to house our

it not only provides funds for the organizations, but it also helps the church connect with people outside its doors.

“The event promotes unity and community for our members as they work together to serve those in our world that are marginalized,” Brubaker commented.

She is especially invested in this year’s event because of the personal connections between the church and the organizations it is supporting.

“The food in and of itself is very delicious, and our own church members love the event for the food, but also it supports two organizations that are close to our hearts,” she said. “Dr. Dali has spoken at our church on numerous occasions, and our congregation has met a Haitian doctor that has worked with the Haiti Medical Project.”

assistant student from Garden Spot, said the group has organized 25 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need, provided a holiday meal for LCCTC students and faculty, and sponsored a hat and mitten tree with the clothes collected donated to Water Street Mission.

“SkillsUSA is important because as a student who has been in multiple clubs before, SkillsUSA has been the most beneficial for me,” said Ky Logan, who is a veterinary assistant student from Elizabethtown. “It has helped me grow socially and build connections with others who have fields of studies in different areas or the same interests as me. There are also many different opportunities for community service, which some schools require. I think it’s beneficial SkillsUSA provides that opportunity for students to be able to get those hours that they may need to meet graduation requirements.”

Ky added, “It’s not just a club for me. The competitions and community service projects we do are important.”

Sara Rager, an aspiring patient care technician from Manheim Township, stated that being part of SkillsUSA has helped her improve her grades.

“We get to come together and form something special,” said Sara. “That’s why I feel like it’s so much more than a club, as Ky said. It has helped each individual, especially me, with thriving and striving for what I want.”

One of 21 Willow Street campus students who competed in the SkillsUSA district competition, Sara finished first in extemporaneous speaking to earn a trip to the state competition, which will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 2 to 4, in Hershey.

At districts, Sara was given five minutes to do research for her speech with the topic, “How has responsibility made you grow in SkillsUSA, and why is it important?”

“I told them about my experiences in SkillsUSA and how I work with a team,” Sara said. “In the past, I’ve had a hard time working with a team, and

now, I’ve worked with a lot of intelligent minds and brilliant people, and we can come up with a lot of great ideas.”

Grace Wagner, a dental assistant student from Solanco, also finished first at districts and will compete at states.

“I’m super excited, looking forward to my state competition,” said Grace. “I’ve been working very hard, studying hard recently for that, and I’m excited to see what the outcome will be.”

Grace said she joined SkillsUSA because of the advice of her instructor Rachel Sprecher. “I had been having thoughts about doing it before, but I wasn’t too confident,” said Grace, who is considering returning to LCCTC for postsecondary education. “I decided to listen to her advice, and I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I’m very grateful that she encouraged me to do that because I feel like this (club) is going to lead

to very large opportunities for my education and my future.”

Britney Valentin, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, attended the state delegate conference on March 5 at the Dauphin County Technical School. It’s a Central Region workshop to prepare delegates for the procedures and events at the April state competition in Hershey.

“Being a delegate means to have an important role in helping shape the future of SkillsUSA,” said Britney.

Mason Houser, a diesel equipment and technology student from Lampeter-Strasburg, competed in districts. “I wanted to test my skills, how quickly I can do tasks, and to see how much I actually know,” said Mason. “I chose the CTC for the diesel program. My uncle worked in diesel as a semi-truck operator, and I grew up on that (and thought), ‘Hey, I want to do this.’”

“Our prices are very affordable. We offer the community a way to stretch their dollar and get the books they want.”

The preview day typically attracts a crowd that’s a mix of dealers and community members.

“We used to get more - 10-plus - dealers who bought our books for resale,” Casper remarked. “We still get some of them, and they pay to get first pick because they are going to resell. Others come because you get first pick on all the books, from 2 to 7 p.m. If you are looking for specific books, looking to fill out your collection, this is your chance. The nicest books go in this first day and (a small admission fee) is not a lot to pay for the privilege. You can buy a Friends membership … at the sale that is good for a year, and you get into the sales for free on preview day.” The Friends group holds two books sales annually, one in the spring and one in the fall.

School sets game night and open house

Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, will host a game night and open house on Friday, March 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event is open to current and prospective students and their families.

Attendees may purchase food at Piper Belle’s BBQ, Dutch Country Soft Pretzels, Ezzy Eats, the Kraybill concession stand, and others. Families are encouraged to bring board games to play with friends. There will also be a basketball free throw competition in the gym.

Proceeds from the book sale provide support for library programs and operations.

The Friends group spends a significant amount of time preparing for the sale.

“We collect, sort and box donations to the library all year,” Casper said. “On the Saturday before the sale, we set up the room with tables and move all the boxes into the Community Room in the lower level of the library and put the books on tables. We have volunteers who do a great job, including setting up the sale.”

Donations are accepted year-round at the library whenever the library is open and may be placed in a designated space inside near the rear doors.

The Friends group is always looking for more members, who can help in a variety of ways at the library, including volunteering in the on-site bookstore.

Casper invites everyone looking to add to their book collection to come to the sale.

“We give you help getting your books to your car,” she said, noting that customers are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes. “We do everything we can to make the shopping experience easy. You can pay with cash, check or credit card.”

Entry to the library is from the back of the building where there is free parking available in a lot. For more information, visit https:// etownpubliclibrary.org.

Prospective students and their families will also have opportunities to meet staff members, tour the school, and learn about education at Kraybill.

Waldorf school slates open house

Susquehanna Waldorf School, 15 W. Walnut St., Marietta, will host an open house on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees may tour the classrooms, watch a traditional puppet play, and learn about the curriculum. The school is open to children in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

Fans of the children’s series “Bluey” may discover there are similarities between the school featured in the show - Glasshouse Primary - and real-world Waldorf schools.

Waldorf education champions the idea that childhood is a time for creativity and wonder. Just like Bluey and Bingo transform tree stumps into helicopters or conjure up magical kingdoms from everyday objects, students

engage in open-ended play with natural materials like wooden blocks, silks, and handmade toys. These early experiences with imaginative play lay the foundation for creative problem-solving and innovation as students grow into their middle school years.

At Susquehanna Waldorf School, lessons go beyond textbooks. Whether exploring math through hands-on activities or learning life skills through collaborative projects, students seek to develop critical thinking and empathy. In the early grades, experiential learning is included to build confidence and curiosity, while middle school students take on increasingly complex projects that integrate artistic, academic, and practical

MUSSER’S TREE SERVICE

skills to foster resilience and independence.

All students, including the middle-schoolers, spend ample time outside, exploring the Susquehanna River and learning through nature walks. Waldorf education emphasizes the value of connecting with the earth and fostering a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world. Early outdoor experiences evolve into more structured ecological studies in the older grades, deepening students’ understanding of their place in the world and their responsibility to it.

The school also seeks to create an environment where everyone feels like family. Eighth-grade students serve as buddies to younger children, building a sense of

mentorship and connection across ages. Older students take on leadership roles, modeling empathy and cooperation for younger peers while preparing for their next educational journey.

In addition to the open house, the school offers private tours. To contact the school about scheduling a tour, visit www.susquehanna waldorf.org.

The Susquehanna Waldorf School, founded in 1987, envisions a community where children love to learn and are inspired to live with purpose, compassion, and joy. The school’s mission is to foster creative, confident, and compassionate learners through an education that nurtures the head, heart, and hands.
