Outpacing Alzheimer’s With Hope and Action
BY CAT SHANNON
iscovering he had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease changed Sean Terwilliger’s life, but not in the way you might expect.
“Getting diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Sean said.
“Before my diagnosis, I worked. I didn’t love my job, but I did it. I had a great life - I had a family, I traveled the world, but I never woke up every day with a mission like I do now.”
Sean’s mission is to help others navigating the world of Alzheimer’s, providing resources and offering hope.
He will speak about his experience when he participates in “The Impact of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Our Community.” The free program is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Deike Auditorium in the Freemasons Cultural Center/Visitors Center of

Helping Neighbors Find Their Way Home

BY CAT SHANNON
Housing is a basic human need, but it’s also one of the easiest things to take for granted. For many people in the county, the certainty of having a place to call home has slipped away, often after a job loss, medical crisis or sudden life change. That’s where ECHOS steps in, offering a pathway back to stability.
ECHOS, which stands for Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services, provides

Sock Puppets, Surprises and City-Wide Theater
BY CAT SHANNON
With a tagline of “always pushing the boundaries of what theater can be,” Creative Works of Lancaster champions the power of performance.
“We believe that theater can be a powerful force for goodbuilding community, sparking connections and cultivating joy and wonder - and we want people to know that there are many ways to experience theater that go beyond buying a ticket and sitting quietly in a dark building looking up at a proscenium stage,” said executive director Lydia Brubaker. “It can happen anywhere, be accessible and relatable for everyone.”
Creative Works of Lancaster became a nonprofit in 2010 after a few years of grassroots organizing with a group of creative people in Lancaster, Brubaker said. Original board members were Brubaker, Anne Kirby, Daniel Klotz, Jenn McMorris and the late Douglas Campbell.
“The project started with plans for a community arts center, with creative co-working space, rehearsal and studio space, performance and gallery space and a cafe, but we switched gears when the economy collapsed and decided to be nomadic and create theatrical events in various spots around the city,” Brubaker shared.
The group’s mission is to nurture and promote creative opportunities throughout the community in order to provide “exquisite moments of surprise and delight in an ever-challenging world,” she said.

Alzheimer’s
Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. No registration is required to attend.
Sean resides in Massachusetts, but his father, Bob, and his stepmother, Joan, live at Masonic Village.
After he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in June of 2024 at age 60, Sean began learning everything he could about the disease. A retired IT expert, he shifted his focus to finding a way to live through the disease, which has no cure.
He began blogging about his experience at www.alzblog.net,
sharing what he was going through, new research and more. He also started speaking about Alzheimer’s at public events and became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association chapter near where he lives.
One day, his father asked him to come and speak at Masonic Village, so Sean connected with the Lancaster chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and made the arrangements.
At the program, Sean will be joined by George Kohlweiler, a Masonic Village resident who heads up the community’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s

team, as well as representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, who will provide a more technical presentation on the disease.
Sean will discuss how his life changed after his diagnosis, how important it is to be an advocate for one’s health and how he maintains a positive attitude in the face of the disease.
In 2018, Sean had a mini stroke, after which doctors discovered a hole in his heart. For the next few years, every time he noticed slow reactions, lost words or the inability to remember something, he attributed it to the stroke.

Still, Sean and his wife, Wendy Bradley-Terwilliger, thought something else might be going on.
“It took me six years and seeing doctors in three states to finally get a referral to a neurologist,” Sean said, adding that the testing resulted in his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
“I never thought my diagnosis was going to be anything but long-term effects of the stroke,” he recalled. “My goal wasn’t to discover I had Alzheimer’s, but it turns out that’s what happened.”
Now treating the disease with infusions every two weeks, Sean

performs three to six times a year.
“The whole city is our stage, and we’re always looking for new spots that inspire us or feel like the right place for a particular performance,” Brubaker stated. The group has performed in more traditional venues, such as Zoetropolis, West Art and the Green Room Theatre at Franklin & Marshall College, but it has also used space in restaurants, shops, schools, public parks, barns, churches, hotels, parking lots, cemeteries and more.
The organization’s mascot is named E.E. (for the Exquisite Explorer) and is always shape-shifting and changing outfits, representative of the nonprofit’s evolving works.
Gwen Tulin, and ‘Dye Hard: The Siege of Sockatomi Plaza,’ our latest sock puppet parody by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein,” Brubaker said. The group is taking a short break but is also busy planning its 2026 season, which will include a new sock puppet show for the Lancaster Fringe Festival in May.
To keep live theater accessible to everyone, Creative Works of Lancaster uses a “pay what you decide” ticketing model, letting audience members decide what the experience was worth to them or what they can afford after a show is over.
We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.

“We do original plays by local playwrights, sock puppet parodies of classic films, The 24-Hour Plays: Lancaster, site-specific performances designed for particular locations and traveling performances where the audience moves from one place to another,” Brubaker said.
Some past highlights have included inviting audiences to eat hot dogs and do camp activities with the troupe, setting willing audience members up on awkward dates for a Valentine’s Day performance and creating a theatrical escape room set in an Antarctic research station.
“We just got done with a busy fall, celebrating our 15-year anniversary with the Net Gala, our send-up of the Met Gala, and premiering ‘Dead Inside,’ a new play by local playwright
“We’re creating brand-new theater by artists in the community. There are so many talented, creative people in the area, and while there are many other great theaters that provide opportunities for people to work on established plays and musicals, we want to give people opportunities to collaborate on new work, take chances and bring their ideas to life,” Brubaker said.
Originally from Lancaster, Brubaker has been involved in regional theater for two decades. She directed new plays in college and enjoys collaborating with playwrights, but she also participated in Odyssey of the Mind, a creativity and problem-solving competition for students, and put on puppet shows as a child. Creative Works of Lancaster provides an opportunity for Brubaker to maintain an active creative life and work with other creative people. She particularly relies on board chair Joanna Underhill, a longtime friend and theatrical collaborator, for keeping the organization thriving.

“She’s been active in the Lancaster performing arts scene since 1996, and she’s the one who first brought up the idea of doing ‘Sock Puppet Psycho,’ our very first sock puppet show,” Brubaker said.
Brubaker hopes audiences will continue to support the nonprofit’s work, and she encourages newcomers to check out a performance.
“Expect the unexpected!” she said. “We know it can feel risky to see something new, but you can be assured that our goal is for you to have a good time and to be surprised and delighted by something you’re not going to see anywhere else. You’ll share an experience with other people in the community, knowing that a lot of hard work, creativity and heart went into making it happen.”

resources and support for people facing a housing crisis and also offers opportunities for any member of the community to find the help he or she needs.
“A lot of our work is focused on supporting individuals through housing support systems,” said executive director Ashley Bulley. “We go from crisis to permanent housing. We run the gamut of everything available for housing opportunities and support.”
Established as a 501(c)(3) based on Washington Street in Elizabethtown, ECHOS serves the Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts, including Mount Joy, Bainbridge, Maytown, Marietta and Rheems.
The ECHOS Enrichment Center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and serves as a walk-in resource hub for community members, said Bulley. Visitors can use computers to search for jobs, access Social Security or disability information, explore health insurance options and more. Two case managers are available by appointment or walk-in to help connect people with services, along with partners such as CareerLink and Lancaster EMS.
“All of this is free to community

members,” Bulley remarked. “Anyone in our service area can use the Enrichment Center.”
Within the center, ECHOS also offers an Eviction Prevention and Diversion program, providing funds for people who are at risk for losing their home or who are facing shutoff of their utilities.
From December to April, ECHOS hosts an emergency shelter, open seven days a week from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. With a capacity of 42 people, the shelter includes four family rooms, designed to keep incoming families together during their stay.
The shelter relies on extensive community support, whether through the hot meals provided nightly by groups and organizations or through the volunteers who help in the evening, spend the night or serve breakfast in the morning.
“Our community is incredible with the support they give us,” Bulley said, adding that it takes 70 volunteers a week to operate the shelter. “Last shelter season, we did not cook a single meal. Every night, the community dropped off a hot meal, and so far this year, the same thing has happened.”
The shelter is a low-barrier shelter, meaning people have the lowest level of restrictions to be able to use the space.
“We want to get people in who need help and then try to connect them with case management and other resources to get them on a path to stability,” Bulley said.
ECHOS operates several housing programs designed to meet people at different stages of need. Its Homestead transitional housing program includes six on-site apartments for adults 55 and older and young adults ages 18 to 24, particularly those aging out of foster care.
Alzheimer’s
remains hopeful in the medication’s ability to slow the progression of the disease.
And while he’s optimistic now, he wasn’t initially.
“When I was first diagnosed, I crawled into a hole that I never thought I could come out of,” he said.
“Many people do that. Many people stay there. I chose to write my way out of that hole, and it transformed my life.”
In addition to his blog, Sean is writing a book, tentatively titled “Alz Fired Up: On the Unstoppable Nature of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease and One Man’s Quest to Outpace It.”

Bridge House at ECHOS offers four two-bedroom crisis housing apartments for families or individuals with disabilities.
ECHOS also provides Permanent Supportive Housing for five highly vulnerable households and operates the Pathways to MyHome program, which helps people secure longterm housing.
ECHOS is funded through government programs, grants, donations and community fundraising events, such as its annual ECHOS of Hope Gala, which will be held on Thursday, May 14.
People can also support ECHOS by donating items from the organization’s Amazon Wish List or signing up to volunteer at the emergency shelter.
To highlight what it’s like to face housing insecurity, ECHOS will host a Poverty Simulation on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at KAV at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive. The interactive experience is designed to deepen understanding of the challenges ECHOS guests face.
Bulley noted that funding is always a challenge for ECHOS, as is the increasing number of unhoused people in the county.
“The challenge we face is homelessness looks so different in our community than what people might think,” she said, noting that it’s a hidden epidemic. “These are people who are living in their cars. They’re living the woods. They’re couch surfing or staying with friends until they outgrow their welcome.”
She added that ECHOS is seeing an increase in older individuals who need help as rents continue to rise or people fall victim to scams and lose their savings.
“I think people don’t really under-
from pg 2
year and a half. I spend all my time on this; it’s my life now.”
He focuses on brainwork to strengthen his brain, exercise and healthy eating, but he also remembers to pause and enjoy life.
“I want people to know how important it is when people get diagnosed that they become active in staying hopeful,” he said. “You have time to still live, laugh and love.”
He hopes people who attend the program at Masonic Village will discover the processes for diagnosing the disease, medication options, what prognosis looks like in the ever-evolving process of combatting the disease and guidelines for self-care.
stand how close to homelessness we all are,” she said. “We are literally one major life event away - whether that’s a job loss, an illness - from needing help. Our goal is to be that resource for anyone who comes in and says, ‘I’m in a situation that I never thought I was going to be in.’ We’re here to help.”
For more information on ECHOS and the Poverty Simulation, visit www.echoslancaster.org.

“I want a quantification of ‘How much worse am I getting? How much life do I have left?’ And there’s no way to know that,” Sean said. “We know so little about the workings of the brain, but I have learned so much in the last
“People are going to hear the story of someone who decided he wasn’t going to sit back and let the disease take him,” Sean said. “I have been blessed in so many ways, and when I lose it all, I will have no regrets.”
