in the county, Lenahan asked a question: “What if we grow food together and give it away?” From that idea, a communitybased effort to produce food for Lancaster County ’s charitable food system began to grow. Wittel Farm partners with the Lancaster County Food Hub, the Elizabethtown Community C upboard, Power Packs, Water Street Mission and other organizations to distribute its harvest. This summer, the farm will partner with Columbia Dream Center for the first time,

A winter evening in Elizabethtown is about to get a whole lot brighter - and a whole lot sweeter as well. On Friday, Feb. 13, girls and their fathers or other male role models may step out of the February cold and into a reallife Candyland, complete with vibrant colors, oversized sweets, music, dancing and just enough sparkle to make the night feel magical. GEARS will transform Salon 1 at Masonic Village into a candycolored world of imagination for its annual Daddy/Daughter Dance. The event is designed to help families slow down, laugh together and make memories that linger long after the last song plays. “This event is more than just a dance. It is a chance to celebrate and get together as a community,” shared Erin Thomas, special events coordinator for GEARS. “There are activities for everyone, not just dancing!” The dance will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Salon 1 at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. “ This year ’s theme is the Daddy/Daughter ‘Sweetheart’ Dance,” Thomas said, noting that people can expect a colorful, immersive atmosphere. “I plan to bring Candyland to life! This theme allows for lots of colorful decorations and (oversized) candy. Valentine’s Day isn’t just about love; it’s about candy, too.” Along with the candy theme, t h e p a r t y w i l l fe a t u re D J entertainment by Occasions Disc Jockeys, dancing, guest appearances by Princess Belle and Adam (the prince the Beast

n a stretch of preserved ... EL WITH US farmland in Elizabethtown, COME TRAV transformation happens every day at a space that offers reconnection - with the land, with one another and with the essential act of growing food. This is Wittel Farm, a nonprofit on 85 acres of land with a long history of care, now being reimagined as a place where food, community and environmental stewardship meet. Records date the property to the mid-1700s, and long before that it was cared for by the Susquehannock people. In the 1980s, Chuck and Katie Wittel placed the property into a land trust, gifting it to the Lutheran Camping Corporation. While not much was produced at the farm for many years, that changed in 2016, when the farm’s current manager, the Rev. Matt Lenahan, began the Growing Project, a partnership between the Lutheran Camping Corp., the Lower Susquehanna Synod and Hunger-Free Lancaster County. Lenahan, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, grew up on a large commercial farm in New York and once thought he would never farm again after entering ministry. His thinking shifted as he became more aware of food insecurity and the fragility of modern food systems. “I really started to think about the food system and how fooddependent we are because so few of us are actually participating in the food production,” he said. “We’ve really stepped away as a culture from agriculture as a principal way people live, and I think that’s problematic.” Knowing that access to fresh, locally grown food was a challenge

Established in 2021, Voyage Mount Joy is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the town through community events and resources. The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy will offer a fun way to support that mission, Melhorn said. “I would encourage anyone who is looking for a different brewfest experience to check out this one,” he remarked. “Not only is it themed, but we have a different variety of breweries that attend our brewfest ... many breweries which people may have not tried before.” Although the event doesn’t happen until the spring, Melhorn encourages people to purchase tickets now to ensure admission. Tickets may be purchased at www.voyage mountjoy.com. There are separate prices for VIP tickets and for general admission. The event is open to people age 21 and up. While the day promises to be a fun time, it also helps raise money for the community. Last year ’s b e e r fe s t ra i s e d a b o u t $35,000, Melhorn said, with proceeds split between Voyage Mount Joy and another local community organization. “Once the event expenses were paid and par tner expenses were distributed, Voyage Mount Joy was able to donate $4,000 to the Donegal Athletic Club,” he noted. The club’s mission is to improve the experience of Donegal student-athletes, marching band members, families and alumni. The organization will be the recipient of beerfest funds again this year.

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will meet on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. T homas Road, Lancaster. Barbara Josephian and Cindy Todoroff will present “Pruning: What You Need to Know.” They will discuss pr uning tools,

safety guidelines, which tools to use in various situations, and how to care for the tools. If interested, attendees will be able to practice pruning. Guests are welcome to attend, and there is a fee. Attendees are welcome to bring Valentine’s Day cards that will be distributed to veterans.

LANCASTER GENERAL HEALTH

SAFE STORAGE s e LIVES v a S Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.

In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.

• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.

• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.

• Store ammunition separately and securely. • Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access.

When it begins at home, generosity is a learned behavior. In some ways, Patrick Trimble’s story reflects the overall generosity of Lancaster County residents. But it also possesses the power to inspire others and create social awareness. “ M y p a re n t s w e re a tremendous influence on me,” said Trimble. “My parents weren’t people of means, but they did the right things. They taught me how to do the right things. They were simple, hard-working people who raised six children. The value system they instilled in me has helped form who I am today.” W ho Trimble is is an altruist. Over the last few years, the 65-year-old resident of Manheim Township has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charitable causes. But to no Lancaster County nonprofit has he donated more money than Aaron’s Acres. “I’m a Christian. I believe

they ’re also supporting the parents. Some of these parents never get a break. (Aaron’s Acres is) expanding their programs, and they’re giving something to kids and parents. I have friends who have kids with disabilities, so I see the other side of it. I know the money is being used wisely, I like that it’s a local organization and that it’s flowing to an end result.” Trimble initially became better acquainted with Aaron’s Acres’ mission through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s A c re s , Tr i m b l e b e g a n pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donations with even more of his funds. At the beginning, Trimble ’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s

Igloo Insurance introduced its new mascot, Binder the Bear, at the annual Frosty 5K in Middletown on Dec. 6. Binder cheered on the participants and offered photo opportunities alongside Frosty the Snowman. The person behind the costume was a freshman wrestler from Middletown Area High School, who showed community spirit while energizing racers and posing for pictures. The name Binder was chosen because in the insurance world, a binder is a temporar y contract that provides proof of coverage until

the actual policy is issued. It is a way to give clients peace of mind knowing they are protected while the paper work is finalized. The Frosty 5K began in Hoffer Park and then traveled through the east side of Middletown Borough. Proceeds from the event supported the Middletown Area Historical Society and its mission to “collect, preserve and teach” the history of Middletown and Dauphin County. For more information about community events and updates from Igloo Insurance, follow the agency Brian Mahon (center) of Igloo Insurance welcomed the on Facebook, LinkedIn and agency’s new mascot Binder the Bear (left) and Frosty the YouTube. Root from pg 1 soil health, biodiversity and ecological balance. Cover crops, composting and minimal soil disturbance replace synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. “We work year-round at this site,” Lenahan said. “And we are constantly learning.” That learning happens not only for Lenahan, but for the hundreds of volunteers who come to the farm each year. Between 300 and 500 people help plant, weed and harvest throughout the growing season. Alex Chism, a Millersville University senior studying education and plant science, joined the farm as an intern in 2024 and quickly became an essential part of its work. “I really enjoy the physical nature of the work,” Chism said. “It’s very methodical.

MICK BULLER & SON ROOFING There are so many things grabbing for our attention, and to be able to just focus on one thing that is very fruitful is amazing.” This past year, Chism expanded the farm’s crop diversity by adding flowers alongside food. The flowers have increased pollinators such as bees and butterflies, boosting fruit and vegetable production. Ceinwyn Erb, an Elizabethtown College junior studying environmental s c i e n ce , b e g a n vo l u n teering at Wittel Farm in September. “It’s been wonderful to have every week a set time to be outside, be in nature, working with my hands, doing something that is positively impacting the local community and the local environment,” Erb said. Lenahan describes Wittel

Farm as “community-sustained agriculture,” a model that invites people into the work of food production rather than simply consuming its results. “We like to talk about food sovereignty, acknowledging that every one of us eats, so we all have a stake in food production,” he said. “It’s about really helping people to reclaim an intrinsic human connection to the natural world and to growing food.” He is careful to note that Wittel Farm is not about “agritainment.” “I really want this to be a place where the community can get involved and have a real experience,” he said. “I think there is actually joy in doing this work together. … I really love bringing people together on the farm who have no experience with farming at all, no experi-

ence with food production, and they get to have an experience here, whether planting something, tending or harvesting. It’s transformational for people.” This year, the farm plans to add chickens, expand partnerships and hire more staff, including a farm educator role Chism will fill after graduation. Though the land is held by the Lutheran Camping Corp. and protected by Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lenahan sees Wittel Farm as belonging to the whole community. “ T h i s i s a p l a ce fo r everyone,” he said. “Young children, seniors, people with no experience at all. Everyone has something to contribute.” For more information or to volunteer, visit www .lutherancamping.or g/ the-wittel-farm.
