Mount Joy Township; a desirable

place to live and prosper for over 255 years!

Governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors, the Township of Mount Joy is located between the boroughs of Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and adjacent to the counties of Dauphin and Lebanon. Mount Joy Township is a good mix of residential, agricultural, commercial and industrial areas within its 28 square miles and has over 108 miles of roadways offering passageway for thousands of vehicles daily. Townships in Pennsylvania are one of the oldest forms of organized government in the United States. Mount Joy Township was “born” in 1759 when it received its papers from the adjacent, much larger, Donegal Township. Many small settlements and thriving villages were established in the midst of acres of lush farmland. The Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Middletown Turnpike was an early, important road; now known as Harrisburg Avenue, it provides the boundary between the townships of Mount Joy and West Donegal. Our Township has the distinction of being the only municipality in Lancaster County that is served by two separate school districts, Donegal School District and Elizabethtown Area School District. We support four fire departments, Fire Department Mount Joy, Mastersonville Fire Department,

Rheems Fire Department and Friendship Fire & Hose in Elizabethtown, as well as Northwest EMS. We proudly provide 3 Township owned parks for local recreation and fun. Wolgemuth Park, located on Elizabethtown Road next to our newly renovated Mount Joy Township Municipal Building, features walking paths, baseball and softball fields and a pavilion with an adjacent playground on 10 acres. Cove Outlook Park, located across from the Lancaster County Career & Technology’s Mount Joy Campus on Old Market Street in Mount Joy, is 25 acres of passive recreation, walking paths, a soccer field, four pavilions and 2 playground areas. Old Trolley Line Park, located adjacent to the Conewago Trail on Beverly Road in Elizabethtown, is 48 acres full of potential. Phase 1 is slated to start Spring of 2017 and will provide visitors with a multipurpose field, a softball field, a baseball field and trailhead parking for Conewago Trail. If you are interested in learning more about our historic township, you can visit our website at www.mtjoytwp.org or stop by and visit us at our new location, 8853 Elizabethtown Road in Elizabethtown; we look forward to meeting you!

Welcome to West Donegal Township Settled in 1719 and incorporated in 1838, West Donegal Township is named after County Donegal in Ireland. Located west and south of Elizabethtown in Lancaster County, West Donegal Township comprises an area of 15.6 square miles in size. Governed by a five member Board of Supervisors, the 2010 census indicates the Township has 8,546 residents. The Township is part of the Elizabethtown Area School District with the Rheems Elementary School located in the Township. Located within the Township are the Village of Rheems and the 1400-acre campus of the Masonic Village. Masonic Village with a population of 1920 residents provides retirement homes and other health care services as well as recreation opportunities for the community. A variety of housing types and areas are available to prospective residents. They range from agricultural, in the many farmsteads, to single and duplex units, apartments and condominiums. One unique residential opportunity, and first open space development in the Township, has preliminary approval and the first phase developed. The residential development with varied residential units will provide concentrated residential homes on

smaller lots with a park and open space to be enjoyed by the residents. A trail system in the open space areas will connect to a future trail system providing access to trails at Masonic Homes and into Elizabethtown. Wildlife view areas will be provided along the trail system for the enjoyment of the residents. The northwest corner of the Township provides the area of the Conewago Industrial Park. This industrial park, developed over the last 25 – 30 years, is the home of a variety of businesses providing manufacturing, assembly, and distribution services. Additional areas of the Conewago Industrial Park are yet to be developed and available. …A number of other businesses are found throughout the Township providing services and employment to residents and the Township and individuals from the region. The wide range of businesses and housing provides a varied opportunity allowing residents to live, work and play within the Township. ..Located between Harrisburg and Lancaster, West Donegal Township provides residents employment and recreation opportunities with additional amenities in the larger cities. Additional information about the Township can be located on our website – www.wdtwp.com.

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church 125 East High Street • Elizabethtown (717) 367-2786 • www.christlutheran-etown.com The Rev. Albert J. Domines, Jr., STS, Pastor

Sunday Schedule Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday Morning 8:15 AM and 11:00 AM 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM (Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend) Sunday School for all ages 9:45 AM (September through May) Lutherans, who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany, began worshipping near the village of Milton Grove around the year 1732. In the early 1750’s, the group moved to the William Bishop Farm on Ridge Road. On September 29, 1771, the growing congregation celebrated its first Liturgy at its current location on East High Street. Later becoming known as Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, the congregation has maintained a Lutheran Christian presence in the Elizabethtown community ever since. The first church building was a simple log house. In 1805, the log structure was replaced by a brick structure, which was eventually razed in 1886, making way for the present building. The current building underwent two major interior renovations, with the first being in 1921. The second renovation was completed in 1946 in celebration of the congregation’s 175th anniversary. It was at that time that the beautiful stained glass windows depicting the saints were installed. More than a building or location, Christ Lutheran Church is a body of believers committed to the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Good News is heard in the proclamation of the Scriptures, preaching and teaching and forgiveness of sins. The Gospel is made visible in the celebration of Baptism and Communion. As God’s priestly people and sacramental sign, the people of Christ Lutheran live out their faith in witness and service to Elizabethtown and beyond. Whether you are looking for a church home, passing through town or just want to visit, you are welcome any time.

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church is a community of disciples called and empowered by the Holy Spirit to receive and share the Light of Christ, through Liturgy, Fellowship, Education, Witness and Service.

Juniper Village at Mount Joy is a truly pleasant place to live; clean and well-appointed. But most important is the care my husband receives. His needs are anticipated and fulfilled with kindness. His call bell is answered promptly. We are very happy with our choice. Thank you to all the staff at Juniper Village at Mount Joy for the excellent care my husband receives.”

“We are beyond thrilled with my Mom’s care at Juniper Village at Mount Joy. The staff is wonderful and cheerful, which helps all of us when these decisions for more care are being made. Masonic Village at Elizabethtown is well-known as a continuing care retirement community. Beyond providing an engaging lifestyle and high quality care for older adults, we offer opportunities for people of all ages. We invite visitors to stroll through our beautiful gardens, reflect at our Veterans Grove and Eternal Flame monument, traverse more than 9 miles of walking paths, explore our Model Railroad Club, visit our Farm Market for fresh produce and have lunch at the Orchard View Café. Living options on campus include nursing care and personal care suites; retirement living studios, apartments and cottages; a children’s home for 40 youth; and a home for adults with mild to moderate developmental disabilities. We also provide short-term rehabilitation, home care and hospice services for individuals throughout the greater Elizabethtown community. A not-for-profit organization, Masonic Village has the benefit of being tax-exempt. As part of a commitment to our community, we voluntarily signed a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement. Over a 20-year period, Elizabethtown Area School District will receive more than $19 million and Lancaster County, West Donegal Township and Elizabethtown Borough will receive more than $5.9 million to continue to benefit our friends and neighbors. To encourage and support local youth, we award up to six $2,500 scholarships for Elizabethtown Area High School seniors who have volunteered their time to support our mission. The high school also uses our facilities for the prom, swim team practices and other educational programming for free or at cost. To inspire innovative programs that engage students, we have pledged to give $300,000 over 20 years to the Elizabethtown Area Education Foundation.

Elizabethtown

The community can take advantage of wellness opportunities at our Baird Wellness Center and through our partnership with GEARS, which hosts many quality programs on our campus. We also offer the local community high quality child day care services and stimulating adult day care services. Masonic Village’s Outreach Program and monthly caregiver and bereavement support group meetings provide free education and support to those in need. Through individuals and businesses who contribute to our mission, Masonic Villages is able to provide services worth approximately $40.5 million annually to individuals unable to pay for their care. Including Masonic Villages’ five locations across the state, we serve more than 2,800 people daily. For more information about services and events at Masonic Village, call 717-367-1121, visit www.masonicvillages.org or follow us on Facebook.

Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (“EACTC”) was formed in 1999 with a mission to foster collaborative community-wide initiatives and strategies involving schools, parents, neighborhoods, churches, businesses, community leaders and others that encourage and enable youth to make healthy choices regarding alcohol, drugs, and other high-risk behaviors. EACTC envisions a community where families are supported in efforts to raise healthy children who become productive citizens. Some of EACTC’s initiatives, both programs and community-wide strategies fostering change, include the following: EACTC facilitates a community coalition focused on reducing the abuse of drugs and alcohol and addressing other issues community residents feel are important in making Elizabethtown a safer and healthier place for children and families. EACTC helps educate parents and community members about drug and alcohol abuse. Parent mailings and Parenting Classes help parents help their children. Informational materials are provided at various community events. Prescription Take-Back Programs have been established at all area police stations and Elizabethtown College security. A Positive Community Norms Campaign works to improve community health by reducing misperceptions of youth drug and alcohol use, focusing on the positive behaviors of youth, and balancing hope and concern regarding this issue.

In collaboration with Churches that Care, children in need are being matched up with mentors; neighborhood parties are being organized; and families’ immediate needs are being met. A resource directory helps citizens find available community services to address their needs. Do The Right Thing, honors students, grades K-12, who distinguish themselves through their accomplishments, attitudes, or outstanding efforts. In doing so, they are positive role models for their peers. A Turn Around Recognition Breakfast held each year recognizes young people in the community who have made a significant turn-around or improvement in their lives. Additionally, EACTC offers ongoing after school programs. Directed by a social worker and Elizabethtown College students, PEP, offered at Bear Creek, helps students develop positive ways to express emotions and learn effective friendship skills. Club Ophelia, an after-school club for girls in grades 4-8, focuses on building friendship skills, improving self-esteem, identifying healthy tools to resolve conflict, and reducing relational aggression. EACTC also collaborates with Big Brothers and Big Sisters to support their efforts in offering after school programs in Elizabethtown as well as their traditional community match program. Please contact Gail Viscome, EACTC Executive Director, at 367-0678 or www.etownctc.org. to become involved!

When you see and hear an ambulance responding to a medical emergency, you witness the most visible way that Northwest Emergency Medical Services helps the Elizabethtown community. Did you know there are other ways that NWEMS serves the community? Individuals who need CPR certification for their job can sign up for one of the classes taught in our Elizabethtown station at 380 W. Bainbridge St. This is a full CPR/AED class. Businesses that want to provide certified training for a group of employees can schedule a class at their facility or ours. There is a cost per student for these classes. Those who don’t need certification but still want to learn CPR can take our free, “Hands Only CPR classes. There are only two steps to remember for Hands Only CPR: call 911 and ask for an ambulance, then push hard and fast (100 times a minute) on the center of the person’s chest until help arrives. Hands-on practice with our CPR manikins can give you the confidence you need to help someone in an emergency. What other community service do we perform? NWEMS comes to the aid of the Elizabethtown Food Bank by holding an annual food donation drive. We collect for the Toys for Tots campaign before Christmas. Scouts can come to NWEMS to learn the first aid skills they need to earn a badge. Teens who are interested in exploring ambulance service as a career or volunteer opportunity can join Junior Academy, where they learn first aid procedures and have actual patient contact while serving as first aid volunteers for community events like the Elizabethtown Fair and Masonic Village Autumn Day. We will take an ambulance to visit schools and day care centers, and hold station tours for participants in Camp Ladybug for individuals who have mental and/or physical challenges. We also go on-location for ambulance tours and

information when the organizers of community events request it. Our administrators can speak about our organization to service clubs, senior citizen groups, fraternal organizations and other groups. Call Lori Shenk, 665-2904, to learn more about our community service programs or to schedule an event for your group. Call Suzette Kreider, 361-8220, ext. 5, to find out when the next certified CPR class or Hands Only CPR class will be held or to schedule one for your employees.

Community Information

44th Annual Elizabethtown Fair We would like to invite you to the 44th annual Elizabethtown Fair. Our Fair serves as a showcase for local talent and reminds us of the agricultural heritage of Lancaster County. It is a place for families and friends to gather and celebrate all the best in our community. It seems fitting that this year's theme is "An American Tradition," as this is what the Fair has come to represent for those who visit each year. Forty-four years ago the first Elizabethtown Fair was held in the Community Park. The first year there was one tent for competitive exhibits, one food stand and a few carnival rides. There were no livestock or commercial vendors, no contests and no entertainment. Over forty years later we have grown to over 3,000 competitive exhibits, forty foodstands, 150 plus commercial exhibitors, and over 800 livestock. We have added entertainment on two stages and daily contests. We offer something for everyone from the Baby Photo Contest to Senior Citizens Day. The Petting Zoo, manned by over 100 volunteers, is a very popular attraction for all ages. We offer a place for youth to come together to show their livestock. The Fair operates with great cooperation from the Elizabethtown Area

School District and the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, as the fairgrounds are located on school property and parking is offered on church property. The church also provides an area for Competitive Exhibits to be displayed and a room for our monthly Board Meetings. We would like to thank the Elizabethtown Area School District and the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church for being part of the Fair. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters, including volunteers, sponsors, vendors and patrons. The Elizabethtown Fair has continued to grow and serve as a place for us to gather as a community to exhibit, compete, and to entertain and fellowship together. We have successfully been able to bring together agriculture, business, church and education in a great atmosphere. The Elizabethtown Fair Board meets the fourth Thursday from January through October at 8:00 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church. The public is invited to all meetings. For additional information call 367-7256 or online at www.etownfair.com. Thank you for your support and SEE YOU AT THE FAIR!

productive. Together, they are partnering with local businesses and organizations who understand the value of having a healthy work force and community. "Choose to Lose", in its third year, is a twelve week team weight loss competition. The goal of the competition is to teach people how to lose weight properly to keep it off. If participants meet the 24 weekly fitness and nutritional challenges, not only will they lose weight, but they will have learned how to adopt and live a healthy lifestyle. In our first two years, 260 individuals have already competed for a total weight loss of over 1,700 pounds! Trophies are awarded to the winning teams, but everyone is a winner when they “Choose to Lose”! For more information, contact: muellerpersonaltraining@gmail.com

“E-Town Get Fit™” is based in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and is committed to bringing the community together by organizing and hosting friendly competitions and events that challenge individuals to get healthy and stay healthy. “E-Town Get Fit™” seeks to raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of achieving physical fitness through staying active and adhering to proper nutritional principles. “E-Town Get Fit™” partners with local businesses and organizations to promote the understanding and value of having a healthy work force and community. The program is the result of one local Certified Fitness Trainer’s dream to reach out and to help change the lives of as many people as possible. While working with his many diverse clients, Mark Mueller (Mueller Personal Training) quickly became aware of the great need for physical fitness education and instruction in our community. Mueller states, “There are so many folks out there who are desperate to find someone who is able to educate them, guide them and produce results when it comes to losing weight, getting in shape and staying in shape. Not only do my clients enjoy their success, but I celebrate right along with them. And I want to be able to share in the victories of more people.” He realized that his one-on-one training was not enough if he wanted to share in the success of more individuals. So, the idea of “E-town Get Fit™” began to develop. Mark presented his plan to the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce who saw this as an excellent opportunity to bring the community together while helping it to become healthier and more

Lancaster County is a special place. How will you make it even better in the future? Places2040 is a comprehensive plan for Lancaster County’s future – a conversation about the kind of place we want the county to be.

WHY DO WE NEED A PLAN?

Lancaster County is a special place. It’s always changing, but we can adapt to these changes without losing our unique identity and sense of place. To do that, we need to think about places in a new way. Instead of focusing on old boundaries, we’re focusing on whole places: communities, corridors, and landscapes.

WHO’S LEADING THE EFFORT?

The Lancaster County Planning Commission is coordinating places2040, because it’s our job to ensure that Lancaster County remains a special place in the future. We do that by facilitating dialogue, creating shared plans and visions, and helping communities achieve results.

WHO’S PARTNERING WITH US?

Eighteen countywide and city organizations have joined together to educate, build awareness, and engage the public in creating this plan. We’re calling them Partners for Place.

THIS IS YOUR PLAN.

The planning commission is managing the process, but the plan is a recipe for what all of us can do to improve Lancaster County. What kind of future do you want to see?

#1 reason to call. When you look at the facts, it’s a simple choice. Although colon cancer is #2 on the list of deadliest cancers, it can be prevented altogether, or removed at an early stage, with a routine colonoscopy. The prep is simple, and the procedure is brief, safe, painless and respectful. So if you’re 50+ and haven’t been screened, talk to your primary care provider or call Regional Gi at (717) 869-4600.
