Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the
2022-23 school year, starting in August.
The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a
career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.
LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.
The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide new spaces such as a new
The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.
The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of the center’s yearly budget.
Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai
in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their wellbeing, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”
A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug infor-
mant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or co-author of several books.
New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-person ticket, a dis-
counted livestream ticket, and a pay-what-you-will inperson ticket.
To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kau rand@caplanc.org or 717-2997388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context. The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixed-use housing/commercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50 awards, including design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minority-based community enterprises. In the last five years, $300,000 of in-kind services have been donated to nonprofits.
The team members participate in volunteer activities and events, assist local nonprofits and serve on boards and committees. In addition, T/Wa members are active in the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter, including two team members who have served as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Board of Directors.
For more information about T/Wa, visit www.tippetts weaver.com.

Baking is a tradition in many households, and goodies include cakes, pies, and cookies. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today.
Cut cookies are especially
prominent during the holiday season, with some families having favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make baking sessions easier and help to ensure consistent results any time of year.
Working on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top, is recommended. Bakers should never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to
The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for October. The honorees are Lauren Fernald, daughter of Christy and Chad Fernald of Mount Joy, and Zachary Karpel, son of Beth and Sean Karpel of Mount Joy. Students of the Month are honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary Club during their monthly luncheon meeting.
Lauren is involved in the jazz band, the concert band, the choir, Rhythm Singers and Donegal Performing Arts. She has also participated in choir festivals. She is also a member of the National
Honor Society, the prayer group and the soccer and track and field teams. Outside of school, Lauren is a nursery and junior church assistant at Calvary Bible Church, where she also attends youth group and is a part of the worship team. After graduation, Lauren plans to receive further training in wedding planning/coordinating and in the overall hospitality management industry.
Zachary is president of the Math Honor Society, captain of the cross-country team and a member of the National Honor Society, the track team and the ski club. Zachary is working toward his Autodesk Inventor User Certification,

The dough can be rolled out between two sheets of baking or parchment paper to prevent it from sticking. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1/8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. The parchment paper also enables rolled-out dough to be easily transferred to a refrigerator or elsewhere.
When rolling out dough, portioning the dough into a few smaller amounts allows it to roll

out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily.
Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. The dough should be refrigerated for as long as possible, ideally an hour or more - even overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be.
Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness.
an industry-recognized credential that can help students to begin careers as designers, engineers and makers. He also participates in youth group at
his church and serves on mission trips. After graduation, Zachary plans to attend Liberty University to major in mechanical engineering.
Cookie cutters should be dipped in flour with each cut. It is a good idea to work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out designs. When cutting, it is a good idea to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling.
Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter is used, the cookie should be cut by pressing straight down. The cookie cutter should not be twisted or jiggled when being used. Doughs with a high
butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters.
If cut cookies have gotten warmer, placing them in the freezer for a few minutes will help them firm up again before baking. This will help to ensure the cookies will not spread or become misshapen while baking.
Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail may help produce better results.
of Environmental Protection (PADEP). This Application is for the Lancaster Landfill, located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is being submitted to allow the use of the Closure Turf® system as an alternate to the currently permitted geosynthetic final cover system at the facility. As the site has exhausted all on-site soils, currently all operational, construction and closure soils need to be imported to the site for use. Use of the ClosureTurf® system will greatly reduce the required soil volume for landfill closure while providing an effective, durable and low-maintenance final cover. This system is currently approved for use at several landfill facilities throughout the Commonwealth. There are no changes to the approved operating hours or the amount of waste being accepted at the facility as part of this application.
Copies of the Application are available for review and copying at the PADEP Southcentral Regional office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. An appointment must be made with the Southcentral Regional office to review the Application. A fee for copying may be charged by PADEP. Copies of the application will also be submitted to Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Health Department, and the Lancaster County Planning Commission. The host municipality and county may submit recommendations for permit conditions, revisions, application approval or disapproval, and other comments to PADEP within sixty (60) days of their receipt of the application. PADEP will also accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review period. Comments should be sent to the Regional Solid Waste Manager, PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17110.

Messick’s Christmas Light Show is celebrating its 10th year open to the public to raise money for local charities at Messick’s new store at 1475 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. The light show will run every evening from 6 to 9:30 p.m. through Wednesday, Dec. 28.
The show features thousands of Christmas lights and
video displays choreographed to music and broadcast over FM radio so visitors can enjoy the entire show from the comfort of their cars. Volunteers from Messick’s will collect donations to benefit local charities again this year. One
hundred percent of the proceeds collected will be split between Mennonite Disaster Service, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), Paxton Ministries and Water Street Rescue Mission.
Last year, Messick’s collected $48,818 in donations during the event, bringing the nine-year total to more than $366,000. Information about the light show is available at https:// messicks.com/messicks-2022 -christmas-light-show.
