Christmas Dinner Will Feed The Body And Soul hristmas is a time of joy, but for some people, it can be lonely. That’s where Cross Roads Church comes in. For the 24th year, the church, located at 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, will be serving a free Christmas meal. The meal will be offered for either takeout or sitdown service on Saturday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “I know from experience what it’s like to not have anyone to spend Christmas with,” said Clare Funck, one of the organizers of the meal. “My family lives away from here, and my first Christmas here, I was

alone. I love this dinner because it gives people an opportunity for fellowship, a chance to talk to other people and a chance to meet new friends.” The meal will include turkey, gourmet potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce and a selection of desserts. As Funck noted, it takes a team of volunteers to make the day a success. “We served about 400 people two years ago,” she said, noting that even with only offering a pickup option last year due to the pandemic, the church still gave away about 300 meals. Church members begin prepping for the meal weeks before Christmas and set up the night

before. “Our students participate as well,” Funck said. “They serve the meal.” The idea for the Christmas meal came from Joe McFarland, who is still one of the event coordinators. “It was something that was on my heart to do,” he recalled. “ W hen I first thought of this, about 25 years ago, there were a lot of places that offered free Thanksgiving meals, but really nobody was doing free Christmas meals. To me, that’s the most important day of the year. It’s the birth of Christ. I wanted people to have companionship and know someone is thinking about them on Christmas.”
Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “ We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.” Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will

LWBA Seeks Public Affairs Volunteer

The Liberty War Bird Association (LWBA), located at the Lancaster Airport, Lititz, announced the search for a volunteer to fill the position of director of public affairs. This is an unpaid position to support the LWBA, a nonprofit group of veterans that supports fellow veterans. The group’s efforts have included the restoration of a UH-1H (Huey) helicopter to its original wartime condition, and the helicopter is now used to support various veteran-based functions. Applicants should have a background in public affairs.

The Martins will perform in the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. The event will also feature vocalist Guy Penrod and Christian comedian Mickey Bell. The Martins consists of siblings Judy, Jonathan and Joyce Martin, who grew up in rural Hamburg, Ark. The group rose to prominence in the 1990s and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and the White House, as well as concert halls, auditoriums and churches nationwide. The Martins has also been featured on Bill Gaither’s multiaward-winning Homecoming Video and Concert Series, and the trio garnered eight Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, three Grammy nominations and multiple hit songs.

Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with
leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle. The Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, in collaboration with Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register by calling 717-295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. LEADS Announces 2021 Ornament WE SELL & SERVICE NAME BRAND APPLIANCES FROM:
As one of the first buildings constructed at Franklin & Marshall College, Old Main has stood the test of time. To commemorate its place in Lancaster history, the iconic structure has been chosen as the 14th Lancaster Landmark Ornament, an annual fundraiser for Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), the all-volunteer group that provides all city holiday decorations, including the Penn Square Christmas tree and summertime hanging flower
baskets in Lancaster. LEADS selected the 165year-old Old Main as this year’s honored landmark. Dedicated in 1856, Old Main embodies the classic details associated with Gothic Revival architecture, including extreme verticality, lancet windows and louvers, battlements, and finials. It was designed by the Baltimore firm Dixon, Balbirnie & Dixon and built by Lancaster contractor Haden Patrick Smith at a cost of $25,136 starting in 1854.
The 3D ornaments are renditions of structures that have played a meaningful role in Lancaster’s historic and cultural life, crafted of solid brass plated in 24-karat gold. For the first time, the ornament is offered in full color. It can be used as a tree or window decoration or displayed in the gold foil box it comes in along with a card telling its history. Since 2012, LEADS has invested more than $75,000 to improve the city’s holiday decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go toward
paying for that investment. Ornaments can be purchased at several Lancaster locations, including BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 342 N. Queen St., rear warehouses; Festoon at the Firehouse, 202 N. Duke St.; the Turkey Lady at Central Market; and the city Visitors Center on Penn Square. They can also be ordered by calling BUiLDiNG CHARACTER at 717-394-7201.
