The meal will be served on Sunday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, located at 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Options will be available for dine-in and takeout.

This is the 25th year the church has offered the meal, which began not only to provide sustenance at Christmas, but also to provide companionship. “When I talk to people who come to this dinner, a lot of people have just lost a spouse, and the holidays are hard,” Funck stated.

“Some have no family in the area and nobody to spend Christmas with. That’s what this season is all about - community, fellowship and being there for people.”

The meal will include turkey, gourmet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and desserts. Everything is made and donated by the congregation, said Kendric Bert, chair of the committee. “It takes a lot of people to make this happen,” he remarked. “This church is very community oriented.” Along with making and preparing food, church members work as servers and greeters during the meal.

“We have a sign by the entrance for people to come in, and we decorate the gym for the meal,” said Funck, noting that holiday music is

also played during the meal. In the past, about 400 people have attended the dinner.

The church members are active year-round in community projects, including holding a harvest fest in the fall, Bert said. “This meal is an extension of our mission to serve the community,” he noted. “Our leadership promotes community involvement.”

Although the meal is free, donations of nonperishable items will be accepted at the door for the Mount Joy Food Bank. Reservations are requested for the meal, but are not required, and walk-ins are welcome. If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.

“We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”

The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave

The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. Since 2014, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown has been ringing in the new year with a family-friendly celebration, and the party will continue this year. Welcome 2023 will be held at the church, 125 E. High St., from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Two services will be held on Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, at 1 and 7 p.m. and a combined informal worship service will take place on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m.

Christmas Eve worship will feature the lighting of the Christ candle and candle lighting to close each service. The Bell Choir will perform at 1 p.m. and the choir at 7 p.m. People who have lost loved ones during the past year will receive keepsakes.

On Christmas Day, the informal blended worship service will include a Blessing of the Toys. Children and adults are invited to wear pajamas to church.

The 3rd Saturday Breakfast Bowl at Florin Church of the Brethren (COB), 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17. The free community event will open at 9 a.m.

The menu will include scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, fruit, muffins, and beverages.

After breakfast and fellowship, a short devotional will take place.

Billow, Guinivan Recognized

The Donegal Athletic Club has selected two individuals to be added to the Memorial Monument wall located just outside the stadium at the Donegal Athletic Complex. The Donegal Memorial Monument was created to recognize people who have made significant contributions to the Donegal School District or the wider community. The newest honorees are the late Harold Billow and the late Michael Guinivan.

Billow served in the United States Army during World War II. He survived the Malmedy Massacare, during which 87 of his fellow servicemen were killed by German soldiers. Each year since returning home, Billow honored the 87 fallen soldiers on July 4 and Veterans Day by placing 87 American flags in his front yard in Mount Joy. For many years, Billow visited and spoke with Donegal High School students about his World War II experiences in order to increase appreciation of the sacrifices made by See Billow,Guinivan pg 5

war veterans to preserve freedom.

Guinivan was an industrial arts teacher at Middletown Area High School for 34 years. Outside the classroom, he coached men’s and women’s swimming at Elizabethtown College, earning several Conference Coach of the Year awards. He also coached swimming at Willowood Swim Club in Elizabethtown and was influential in the Mount Joy Lions Swim Club, where he managed the pool in addition to coaching the swim team.

Guinivan also served on the Donegal School Board and was a member of the East Donegal Township Planning Commission. He volunteered with the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels, and he was active with his church, Mary Mother of the Church, where he served on Parish Council and the Building and Grounds Committee. A member of the Mount Joy Lions Club, he served four terms as president and also club secretary.

Cycle Strong, a workout set to music, will take place from 8 to 8:45 a.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 7 to March 18, at The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. The class is open to individuals age 14 and older. Participants should bring water, a towel and, if they choose, two small hand weights for upper body strength work.

“We’ll have a chicken barbecue, which helps to pay for this event,” said Phil Clark, event chair. “That’s the only thing that has a charge. Everything else is free.” The chicken barbecue will feature chicken from Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll and butter and a drink. The meal will be available to eat in or to go.

Festivities for the evening will include bingo in the church social hall, along with free hot dogs and soup. The youth ensemble from the church will perform in the sanctuary from

4:30 to 5:15 p.m. as part of the Music on High series.

Outside, free popcorn, hot chocolate and s’mores will be available, and members of edance center will perform. A DJ will also be on hand playing music. “For the first time, East High Street will be closed from the church parking lot to the square,” Clark noted. First responders will be on-site with their equipment, including police cars and fire trucks for kids to explore. At the nearby Winters Heritage House Museum, located at 47 E. High St., a variety of children’s crafts and

activities will be offered during the event as well.

The festivities will conclude with the raising of a star at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks.

“The Elizabeth, which is the

former Moose Lodge, is a good viewing spot for the fireworks if you want to get away from the crowd,” said Clark, noting that hundreds of people attended the New Year’s Eve event last year.

The timing of the event is intentional for several reasons, Clark shared. He explained that 7 p.m. corresponds with midnight in Letterkenny, Ireland, the sister city of Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown founders Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes came from Letterkenny. The early end time for the party also works well for families, Clark said, and for Masonic Villages residents, who often attend.

“The whole event is a lot of fun,” said music director Kevin Gane. “There’s something for everybody to do. It’s a nice community gathering.”

Tickets for the chicken barbecue may be purchased at the church office. Some extra meals will be available at the event.

Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started

with 11 motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”

Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the

money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”

The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and participants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”
