The Donegal High School Future Business Leaders of America club will sponsor a breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Cross Roads Church Plans Community Christmas Meal

The members of Cross Roads Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 800 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, invite area residents to join them for the 21st annual Community Christmas Day Meal. People are welcome to stop in at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to enjoy a hot turkey dinner. All are welcome, and there is no cost to attend.

Takeout options are also available.

Attendees who would like to pay it forward are welcome to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Mount Joy Food Bank.

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will serve a free ham dinner on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 5 p.m. There is no cost for the meal, but those planning to attend should call 717-653-5493 to make reservations no later than Thursday, Dec. 13.

Donegal Students Shine In Honors Band 10th Annual New Year’s Day Ride To Support Veterans

Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will host a Christmas Eve service on Monday, Dec. 24, beginning at 6:45 p.m. with an organ prelude. The service will begin at 7 p.m., and it will be an adaptation of the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The lessons will be interspersed with solos and the singing of Christmas carols and hymns. The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College in Cambridge, England, was held on Christmas Eve in 1918. In honor of the 100-year tradition at King’s College, the opening carol will be “Once in David’s Royal City.” Worship will conclude with the lighting of candles and two final carols.

When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “ We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 1 1 r i d ers in year one has grown to more than 450 participants.

According to Chultz, the 521 Club, which offers membership to anyone who has accumulated 30 days of continuous sobriety, serves as an important stepping stone for those facing the challenges of staying in recovery. “We provide a way for people in recovery to realize they can lead a normal life, have fun, be involved with people, and do things that don’t involve substance abuse,” he said.

Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),” noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here.” Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here,” said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends.”

Chultz noted that those being served by local organizations such as The Gatehouse and Transition to Community/ Potter’s House are invited to take part in the ALCATHON. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,” said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic

in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum.

On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues.

The club is overseen by a nine-member board, of which Dan Chultz is a member.

“Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz. “We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.”

Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 2018 Youth Honors Band have in spades.

Sixth-graders Jasmine Aument, flute; Cadel Barber, trumpet; Sadie Hakkinen, clarinet; Eric Kanegene, trombone; and Aidyn Zell, trumpet, were nominated by DIS music teacher and band and jazz band director Meagan Caterbone. Each student musician was nominated based on his or her advanced skill level. Once nominated by their band director, students had to meet a specific set of selection criteria in order to be selected.

The students traveled to Conewago Valley School District to rehearse on the evening of Nov. 16, as well as the morning of Nov. 17.

The rehearsals led up to a 2 p.m. concert on Nov. 17.

Students from 24 school districts participate in the annual performance, so the musicians were split into two groups - the Gray and Maroon bands. Sadie said that she enjoyed meeting students from all of the other school districts. Cadel agreed and added, “Some of the schools had a lot more

DIS students were assigned to the Gray Band, which was conducted by Brent Flinchbaugh. Flinchbaugh is the director of bands at Clarksville Middle School in Howard County, Md., and maintains a private trumpet studio. He was previously principal trumpet of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Yuri Temirkanov and the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.

The music for the Youth Honors Band concert is sent to each student a few weeks before the performance weekend so that each one can begin practicing individually. “It was extremely challenging,” said Jasmine.

“If we can do that really complicated music, we can do anything,” added Sadie.

Cadel enjoyed performing “The Promise of Tomorrow,” written by Mark Lortz. “It’s cool that the conductor knew the person who wrote it,” noted Cadel. “It’s a quick piece, and it was easy to practice.” The other songs performed by the Gray Band were “Images of Ireland” by Brian Balmages,

“Reflections” by Sandy Feldstein and Larry Clark, and “The Incredibles,” arranged by Johnnie Vinson.

The overwhelming favorite for the students was “The Incredibles.” “I liked the movies, and it was fun to be able to play the music,” said Aidyn. Many of their family members who attended the concert also cited “The Incredibles” as their favorite piece performed by the students.

When asked what has contributed to their success thus far as musicians, each of the students credited Caterbone for her instruction and guidance. “Mrs. Caterbone helped us get through it,” said Jasmine. Encouragement from parents was also a plus. “My mom helped me out a lot when I would say I just want to quit, and she said, ‘No, you’re so good at it!’” shared Sadie.

What advice would the students offer to individuals just starting out on an instrument? “Overall, just work really hard,” advised Eric.

“Practice more, and if you’re stuck at a part, just look at it and take your time,” said Cadel. “It’s a process of looking over your music a couple measures at a time. Don’t stop or give up on what you’re doing.”

The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019.

The registration fee, which is a set perperson donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride.

Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at

Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests.

The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees

may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more.

Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or

administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark.

Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000.

Christmas Eve, in case there were not enough volunteers available to serve on Christmas Day, but as it turned out there were plenty of helpers.

Every year after that, the meal has been held on Christmas Day, and McFarland said helping to serve the meal has become such a popular tradition that sometimes they actually have to turn away volunteers. Church members who are not helping with setup

and teardown and serving the meal are eager to make or donate food.

Originally, organizers thought the meal would primarily reach people who may be struggling financially and unable to afford food, but McFarland said that more than anything the meal has served as a way for people who would otherwise be alone to enjoy fellowship and the company of one another. “People usually

get here at the beginning and stay the whole time,” said McFarland. Last year, approximately 420 people enjoyed a meal from Cross Roads.

“A lot of times their families live far away, and they have no place to go,” added Clare Funck, who has helped to plan and serve the annual meal for many years.

“We sit at their tables and catch up, and sometimes we pray with them or ask if they have any prayer requests.”

Cross Roads members also deliver meals to folks working at places like the police station, the fire department, and local convenience stores on Christmas Day all with the goal of making sure no one feels lonely or forgotten.

“If you’re alone for Christmas, come here and be welcomed into the family here,” encouraged Funck. “It’s such a joy to see people being fed and enjoying themselves. It feels like you’re at home.”

The Peace Light was received at an arrival ceremony on Dec. 5 at the office of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, located at 630 Janet Ave., Suite B-114, Lancaster.

The Peace Light will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 6 through Friday, Dec. 21, at the council office. Attendees are encouraged to bring an oil lamp or an enclosed candle to take it with them.

For more than 1,000 years, a flame has been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel. As has been an annual tradition for the last 33 years, a Scout from Austria is chosen to light two blast-proof miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across Europe, and

these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace.

Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New York City.

Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that the

Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light.

The Peace Light is a physical reminder of the reason for the Christmas season.

LCPN Schedules Dinner Distribution On Saturday, Dec. 22, the 32nd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancast-

er. The project will distribute an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m., and no pre-

The Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies will host the 33rd annual free Christmas lunch for seniors age 55 and older on Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25, at the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 10th and Manor streets, Columbia.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. for a time of socializing and sharing coffee, tea, punch, and snacks. Lunch will be served at noon and will include ham and turkey, filling, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, pies, and ice cream. Live music will be performed by keyboardist Louis Schotte.

Dancing is encouraged.

Individuals age 55 and older who do not have other plans for Christmas Day are invited to attend. Reservations are required, and interested individuals may sign up by calling 717-397-2267 or 717-684-0128 by Monday, Dec. 17. Individuals and businesses interested in making a contribution for a door prize that a senior citizen would appreciate may also call to do so.

Transportation for Columbia residents can be arranged upon request. Volunteers will drive a van provided by St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church to pick up

the Columbia-Lancaster Christmas Ladies, emphasized that the event is made possible thanks to donations from area businesses, organizations, and individuals. In addition to a free meal, each attendee will receive a food bag filled with groceries and pantry staples to take home. Door prizes will also be available for folks to win. “One lady who won a $100 gift card last year cried when her name was picked, and she wanted to share it,” recalled Bechtold.

“Sometimes the hardest part about being alone is not having anyone give you a gift.

I know one lady who said she wraps a gift for herself every year.”

Approximately 100 senior citizens from throughout Lancaster and York counties attended last year’s Christmas meal. For Bechtold and Luzader, the vision for the meal is simply to ensure that no one spends Christmas alone. After working together on the Christmas meal for so many years, the pair has established a rhythm and routine for coordinating all of the details - something they start working on in September. Luzader’s mother was the original cook for the meal but later confidently passed the reins on to her.

“She always volunteered for things,” Luzader shared. “And now all of my kids and grandkids get involved with this, too.”

“We’ve never ever missed a Christmas, even one year when there was at least 10 inches of snow,” Luzader remarked.

“We’re like the post office,” added Bechtold with a laugh. “It’s a lot of running around and a lot of work, but it’s worth it when you see the people’s faces.”

A crew of faithful volunteers work together to make the event possible, and new volunteers are always welcome.

Columbia resident Chuck Kloidt has been serving at the meal since it began. On Christmas Eve, members of the Donegal High School wrestling team help to set up the fire hall and prepare the food bags.

This year, one person donated all of the paper supplies - from tablecloths to plates to napkins. A local greenhouse donates poinsettias to decorate the space. “We depend on the community, and they really respond,” said Luzader.

Landis Valley Posts Bonfire, Day Camp Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has slated two events.

The Holiday at Landis Valley Bonfire event, which has been a Landis Valley tradition for generations, will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The museum will be open to the community, free of charge. Attendees are asked to bring a donation of canned goods, which will be given to the Lancaster County Food Bank.

The bonfire event will feature horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling with the Lititz Moravian Trombone Choir around a bonfire in the village triangle, cookies and hot cider in the Yellow Barn, luminarias lining the lanes, and a cooking demonstration in the Tavern.

Landis Valley will host a Winter Day Camp on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27 and 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp, geared toward children ages 5 to 11, will take a look at Christmas through the eyes of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Participants will cook a holiday feast and make crafts, including sewing a rag doll and creating a tin punch ornament. SANTA ‘N SNACKS

The Lancaster County Preservation Trust will present a unique adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ classic story “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. All the roles will be performed by two actors.

Performances will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Dec. 22. The 45-minute adaptation was created by renowned Broadway actress Le Clanché du Rand and toured by the Lincoln Center.
