Food, fun, art and an auction will highlight the Maytown Historical Society’s Christmas Gala. The event will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen St., Maytown, beginning at 6 p.m.
This will be the first time the annual event has been held since 2019, said Janie Garber, treasurer of the historical society. “We always have a really great meal,” Garber stated, noting that the dinner will be catered by Country Home. The dinner will be served family style and will include tossed salad, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, beverages and homemade pies with ice cream. After dinner, entertainment will be provided by artist Elva Hurst, who will do a “chalk talk.” “She will create a picture of our choice, and as she is drawing the picture, she will be speaking about it,” Garber explained. Hurst is known for her motivational, entertaining and inspiring talks. At the gala, she will complete a farm memories drawing. She finishes her work with a black light and colored light show that brings the work to life. “She’ll create a large picture, and then we’re going to turn around and auction it off to raise money for the historical society,” Garber said.

“Thank you for keeping us safe. We honor you. Thank you for protecting our country.” Those are some of the things students at Donegal Primary School (DPS) want veterans to know. Students, accompanied by veterans, participated in a parade through the school hallways on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
“We had about 80 students that brought grandparents, parents, aunts/uncles, etc., that were veterans,” said Taylor Morgan, the DPS music teacher who helped to coordinate the event. “We also had a few students’ families come to participate in the parade in honor of a family veteran who had passed. I think that by having each veteran’s DPS student march in the parade
with them, other students were able to make a greater connection with who we honor on Veterans Day.”
Last year, the school held a drivethrough parade, which was wellreceived by students and teachers, said Sarah Bair, second-grade teacher. “It was really fun and powerful for the students to be able to see the veterans drive past and wave to them,” she commented. “The students enjoyed singing patriotic songs and honoring the people who fought for our country. This year, we planned to take it inside, in case of rain, with the same concept of the veterans parading and the students cheering them on.”
Morgan noted that students learned two patriotic songs for the event - “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “This Land Is Your Land.” Classes were recorded singing the songs,
and the recordings were made into a CD that was played at the parade. “Students really enjoyed these songs and sang their hearts out at the parade,” she remarked.
Students also wrote letters to the veterans as part of the event. “The teachers knew which students from their class were bringing veterans, so the letters could be personalized for the veterans from their classroom,” Bair said. “I think this makes it even more powerful for the students to know they are writing to someone’s mom, dad or grandpa.”
Carter Howe, a second-grader, brought his grandpa, Barry Howe. “I was nervous,” Carter said of the parade. “There were so many people!” He noted, however, that his Papa really enjoyed the parade. Second-grader Betty Bishop brought her mother, Phyllicia Bishop, to

Family Christmas Night will be held at the church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.
“We are blessed to have some very creative ladies who provide the best crafts for children at our church,” said Jessica Rockey, children and youth director. Participants will have the opportunity to make crafts for family members and will also have the chance to gift-wrap the items on-site. “Homemade decorations make the best memories and gifts,” Rockey stated.
Craft-making is just one part of the evening, she noted. “We will also be providing a family Christmas photo with a frame for those who would like one,” she
explained, adding that food and hot cocoa will be available as well, along with cookie-decorating stations.
“It’s all free,” Rockey remarked. “Don’t think it’s just for kids. Adults are welcome to make crafts, too, and there will also be a table just for adult crafting as well.”
Rockey said holding events like this helps the church fulfill its mission to connect with the community at large. “We loved the positive response from the community as well as our church members about the fall fest we held for the first time this past year, so we wanted to do something similar again,” she shared.
Family Christmas Night will offer a fun way to spend time together in a low-key
environment, she said. “People of all ages are welcome to take a break from the hustle and bustle of this time of year,” she commented. “Enjoy fellowship with us while making fun memories with your own loved ones.”
Although the event is free, reservations are recommended and may be made by calling or texting Rockey at 717517-4967 or emailing her at jrockey@gumcmj.net. For more information, visit the church’s Facebook page.
Creative Works To Stage Sock Puppet Show
Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Still-
house, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.
“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actor-puppeteers wield a cast of more than 30 custom-designed, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and
former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.
Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience
was worth after the performance.
Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com. Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.
Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Elizabethtown will be “Rock’In the Holidays” when GEARS hosts the 2022 Elizabethtown Holiday Parade presented by Mars Wrigley. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.
“We’re encouraging people to really embrace the theme, with more music, more festivity, really getting loud,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS. “We’re going to have the Elizabethtown High School and Middle School bands kicking off the parade, and that’s a great way to start a parade.”
Other entries in the parade will include local police and fire departments, churches, Scout troops and local businesses. “We have three groups that will be having horses in the parade,” Eckert stated. “We’ll have horses and carriages and people riding horses.”
The parade will also include a variety of floats as well as some surprises, he shared. “Santa always ends the parade, and he’ll be escorted by some special guests,” Eckert teased.
Children will be invited to visit with Santa in the square until 7 p.m. after the parade. Santa will also be
making multiple appearances in the square throughout the month of December.
“We’re also partnering with the Elizabethtown Library, and Santa will be doing story time from 6 to 7 p.m. on (Thursdays) Dec. 8, 15 and 22,” Eckert said.
The parade will travel on Market Street from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys.
Although the parade starts at 4 p.m., Eckert recommended arriving by 3 or 3:30 p.m. to secure a good
viewing spot. “We usually get a good turnout,” he said.
“We’re excited to have Mars Wrigley stepping up as a sponsor for the parade, and they’ve committed to sponsoring it for at least the next three years.”
He said the parade is a great way to usher in the holiday season, adding, “It’s really cool to see all the churches and groups, all the businesses and people in the community coming together for something that promotes the smalltown, hometown feel of

A Night Of Christmas Fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of the program team at Ruhl’s Church are always looking for ways to connect with the community. Their brainstorming led to A Night of Christmas Fun, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
The evening will begin with Christmas carols and the reading of a short book telling the Christmas story. Each child who attends will be invited to decorate a premade gingerbread house, created from graham crackers. All decorations will be provided to
take home a complete house.
A table will also be set up for children who finish early to color wooden Christmas ornaments or play games. The night will end with a treat of milk and a Christmas cookie.
A Night of Christmas Fun is open to everyone, said Steph Heisey, who is organizing the event with Beverly Snavley. “It’s a family event,” she stated. “It’s something for families to do together. It’s bringing back old Christmas traditions and giving people the chance to spend time together at the holidays, doing something fun together.”
Ruhl’s Church regularly holds community events throughout the year, including dinners, music nights, a summer picnic and God’s Clothing Closet, a clothing giveaway.
All of these events help the members of the congregation fulfill the church’s mission, said Snavely. “I think that’s what Jesus requires of us - to do for others, to help others and to share His love,” she stated. “That’s what He wants
Veterans
from us, and this is a way we can answer that call.”
There is no charge for A Night of Christmas Fun, but reservations are requested to ensure there are enough materials for everyone. To make a reservation, call the church office at 717-665-3400 and leave a message with the number of children and adults attending. The reservation deadline is Thursday, Dec. 1.

walk in honor of Betty’s father Joshua Bishop and grandfather Robert Bishop. “I had fun and loved being able to honor my dad and grandpa,” Betty said.
Not only did she have fun at the parade, but secondgrader Leah Jones noted that her guests - her father Frank Jones II and her grandfather Frank Jones Jr.especially enjoyed the event. “My dad and Popop were surprised, and the parade was very special to them,” Leah said.
School counselor Lyndsay Kieffer noted that the parade is important to the school on an individual, building and community level, adding that giving students the chance to spend time with the veterans in their families makes it extra special. “It is wonderful to teach about being thankful
in life, and this is an opportunity to create a big connection for students,” Kieffer said. “We want them to see the flag and remember to think about the people that have been, or are currently, on our front line protecting and serving our country.”

Holiday Meal Delivery Set
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-
5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families across Lancaster County throughout the holiday season. The main supporters of this year’s distribution are UPMC Pinnacle Health Plan, GFL Environmental Inc., Matthew 25, Stroehmann Bakeries, Giant
Foods, Pepperidge Farms, Four Seasons Produce, Keener Potatoes, and Packaging Corporation of America.
In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, LCPN will also continue its partnerships with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, The Factory Ministries, Mission Food Pantry, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Solanco Food Pantry to pro-
vide meals to families in designated areas.
LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. LCPN relies on individual donations for over twothirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. Monetary donations can be made online at www.lcpn.org. For information on donating by mail, call Tom Fasnacht at 717-569-8521. LCPN is a nonprofit group relying solely on public donations and volunteers.

Wellness Event Planned For First Responders
Responder Rehab, a charity wellness event celebrating first responders, will take place on Monday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Switchboard Studios and Gallery, above the Columbia Kettle Works at 40 N. Third St., Columbia. The event will be presented by Bumbling Circus Workshop.
1st Sgt. Albert Storm Jr., a retired Army combat veteran, will teach an introductory yoga
class for local first responders. After a severe spinal/pelvic injury, Storm, 63, himself a volunteer firefighter with Blue Rock Fire Rescue, found his way back to health through the practice of yoga. He hopes to share the knowledge gained in his years of practice with law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics and other first responders.
Responders will also be treated to chair massage,
refreshments and other wellness opportunities. This event is offered free of charge to local first responders. Families and guests may join their responders in the pub downstairs after the class as Columbia Kettle Works will offer discounts for participants as well as drink specials benefiting the cause.
Space is limited. To register, email Storm at bumbling circusworkshop@gmail.com.

Additional items to be auctioned off include a table runner hand-quilted by Deb Gepfer and a “chunky blanket,” made with thicker, heavier yarn, created by Garber.
“We also have selected a few items from our museum storage, and we’re bringing them out for the auction,” Garber said. The items will include Maytown pottery and a basket.
Proceeds from the gala will
benefit the Maytown Historical Society’s museum and the society’s future expansion. “People have been so gracious in donating things to us, and now we need to expand,” Garber said, noting that money will also help with the society’s operating costs.
She encourages everyone to come to the gala for a fun night out. “It’s good food, lots of fellowship with neighbors and the opportunity to sup-
Sponsors are sought for the event. Additionally, friends and family members may wish to sponsor a chair massage for their favorite cop, medic or firefighter.
Proceeds from the event will fund youth water safety programs, including swim lesson scholarships for kids from the river towns. This choice was prompted by Storm’s work as a lifeguard at the YMCA.

KPB Litter Summit Held In Lancaster
Stakeholders in the fight against litter convened on Nov. 1 and 2 for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) 2022 Litter Summit hosted by the city of Lancaster. The summit was held in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
The event began with a walking tour of Lancaster’s sustainable community, including two projects funded by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Tiny Cans Project and

Other stops on the tour included the Storm Water Rain Garden and Art Mural at Musser Park, the Urban Forestry project, and the new Bike It Lancaster Bike Share. The tour was followed by an

Christmas Rolls Into The Railroad Museum
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will once again welcome the holiday season with its annual Christmas With the Conductor events on Saturdays, Dec. 3 and 10, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be a set fee per child in addition to regular museum admission, and the activity is recommended for children over the age of 3.
As guests arrive at the museum, a conductor will greet them in the lobby and lead them to one of many historic railroad cars. Once inside, the conductor will read the Christmas story “The Polar Express” to children. After the story is finished, the conductor will take the party to Jack Frost Station, where everyone will decorate their own gingerbread cookies and receive a small goodie bag to wrap up the event.
Christmas With the Conductor is a part of the Railroad Museum’s Home for the Holidays event, which is included in museum admission. On both days of the event, the museum will be filled with costumed interpreters in historically accurate garb, hands-on activities will be available in Stewart Junc-
tion railway education center, and cookies and hot chocolate will be offered in the lobby while supplies last.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania began hosting Christmas With the Conductor in 2005, with the goal of using the classic tale of “The Polar Express” and historic train cars to promote literacy in children and celebrate the holidays.
“The kids love getting their tickets punched. The event really captures the excitement of going on a trip for the holidays,” said Elizabeth Myers, program coordinator at the museum. “They always have so much energy, especially after the cookies and icing at the end!”
Guests will have an opportunity to participate in many other seasonal activities before and after Christmas With the Conductor: live holiday music will be played throughout the museum, messages will be telegraphed to the North Pole, and children may take a photo with Santa.
“My favorite part is always the live music. As you walk around and look at the historic locomotives, the environment and background gives the museum so much extra life,” said Myers.
Strength Training Program Planned
Penn State Extension will offer an in-person, group-
based strength training program for adults age 40 and
older. LIFT (Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together) will take place in Lancaster and Quarryville on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 3 to Feb. 23, 2023.
A free informational meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Training Room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. All new registrants and returning registrants who have not participated since 2020 are required to attend. The deadline to register for the program is Dec. 8.
Classes will take place at two locations. Classes will be offered from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. or 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Farm and Home Center. Classes will also be held from 10:45 a.m. to noon at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.
LIFT is designed to pro-
mote improvements in functional fitness or the ability to perform activities of daily living with ease. Participants are encouraged to work toward achieving their own goals in a group setting.
Each LIFT session will include an active warmup, eight core strength training exercises, and a cooldown. The program will also include basic nutrition information with an emphasis on increased fruit and vegetable intake.
There is a cost for the program. Some insurance policies may reimburse participants with 80% or greater attendance. Attendees should check with their insurance provider for more information.
To register, call 877-3450691 or visit https://exten sion.psu.edu/lift and select the class location, date, and time. For details, contact Penn State Extension’s Lancaster office at 717-394-6851 or lancasterext@psu.edu.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Angie Kreider took a personal loss and turned it into a way to help others. When Angie’s mother, Sharon Atkins, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at 59, Sharon had one request: She wanted to remain at home and be cared for by her family. Angie and her father, Bob Atkins, were able to accommodate that request, caring for Sharon in their Columbia home until she passed away in October of 2021. The family relied on additional care from Compassus Hospice, which sparked an idea for Angie.
“I learned about people in government-funded or Medicaid-funded facilities who don’t have the money for nightgowns, or they don’t have friends or relatives to give them to them,” Angie recalled. “My mom was a fashion diva. She really wanted to look nice. A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful. I started thinking, ‘Maybe we could help people out.’”
In June of 2021, before Sharon passed away, Angie and Bob created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname
Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. Gathering financial donations from friends and family, Angie and Bob shopped for high-quality nightgowns and delivered 80 in December of 2021. The gifts were so well-received, the pair decided to repeat the distribution to more women this past spring, to mark Sharon’s birthday in April. So far, they have distributed more than 300 nightgowns to women in long-term care facilities in Lancaster and York counties. Each woman also receives socks and personal care items, along with a card about the project that explains that the gift is in memory of Sharon.
Angie contacts the facilities and gets a list of each woman’s first name, nightgown size and favorite color. “We custom shop for every person,” Angie said. “We ask things like if they want short sleeves or long sleeves, a nightgown or a two-piece set.” Angie also labels each nightgown with the woman’s name so it’s easy to keep track of in the facilities.
Nanny’s Nightgowns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Bob noted that the operation is a simple one. “We have no overhead,” he said. “Every-
Grandparents Support Group To Meet
The Alienated Grandparents Anonymous (AGA) support group will meet on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Park City Community Room, located on the first floor near the entrance to the Park City Center
offices in the Kohl’s wing, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster.
AGA provides information and support to grandparents who have been cut off from access to their grandchildren. For more information, email aga.lancaster@gmail.com.
thing that is donated to us goes to the cause. We have no inventory. We buy the items specifically for the people who will be getting them.”
The organization relies on donations to provide the gifts, and Bob noted that anyone who gives $100 or more is invited to accompany the pair when they distribute the gift bags. “I think the visits are really eye opening for a lot of people,” he said.
Bob and Sharon were married for 53 years, and Bob remembers his wife as someone who loved the beach and enjoyed traveling, shopping,
sewing and cooking. When Angie approached him about starting Nanny’s Nighties, he was all in. “It brings me such joy that we can do this,” he said.
For Angie, the project is about more than just helping others. “I started this nonprofit sort of for selfish reasons,” she stated. “I didn’t want a day to go by that I didn’t think of my mom. I always want to have some reason to say my mom’s name.”
For more information on Nanny’s Nighties or to make a donation, email angelakreider@aol.com.
