Donegal Intermediate Students Perform In Honors Band By Chelsea Peifer
Seven Donegal Intermediate School (DIS) students were selected to be part of this year’s Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Youth Honors Band. The sixth-grade students traveled to Garden Spot High School to rehearse on the evening of Nov. 8, as well as the morning of Nov. 9. The rehearsals led up to a 2 p.m. concert on Nov. 9. Students from 21 school districts participate in the annual performance, so the musicians were split into two groups- the Blue and Gray bands. Representing DIS in the Blue band were Aiden Dickinson, trumpet; Jordyn Slattery,
clarinet; and Emily Slobozien, oboe. DIS students in the Gray band were Makenna Collins, clarinet; Nathan Frey, trombone; Annabelle McCarty, percussion; and Beckett Showalter, trombone. “Both bands got a standing ovation,” noted Nathan. “The hardest song (for the Gray band) was probably ‘Praises.’ It was harder than anything I’ve played yet, but it turned out well.” Beckett said that “Ryukyu-Bushi (Song of the Samurai)” by Michael Story was a challenging piece “because we had to play super loud.” Other songs performed by the Gray band were “Incantation and Ritual” by Brian Balmages, “Two English Dances” by John O’Reilly, and “Bluesville” by Eric Osterling. Athletic Club Salutes Depoe, Felix Immersed In An Interactive Wonderland

The Donegal Athletic Club recognized Ken Depoe and John Felix and added them to the club’s Memorial Monument during a ceremony on Oct. 25. The Donegal Memorial Monument Committee (DMMC) seeks to publicly recognize leaders in the Donegal community through inclusion on the Donegal Memorial Monument. These individuals have made substantial contributions that have made a lasting, positive impact within the Donegal School District and/or the community. Depoe was an educator for 40 years at Donegal, where he was also involved athletics and led the fly tying and fly fishing club. See Athletic Club pg 7
The Train Guys Prepare Holiday Exhibit By Chelsea Peifer

The Train Guys are back at work setting up an elaborate, interactive miniature train display for the public in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The group of approximately 20 volunteers began construction in mid-October for the final product to make its public debut from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. “We think for a temporary Christmas display that this is the biggest on the East Coast,” said Train Guy Craig Coble. Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Attendees will the choice between a Bible study or a craft. For the Bible study, Brooksyne Weber will present “Bethlehem’s Treasures.” She will discuss treasures in the Christmas story, examine their value, and consider how they apply today. Weber lives in Mount Joy and has one daughter. In 2001, she and her husband, Stephen, began serving in business/corporate chaplaincy after spending 25 years in pastoral ministry. They have an active writing ministry at www.dailyencouragement.net and share brief devotionals on a local radio station. Brooksyne also sings in the Calvary Church choir in Lancaster. Jennifer Witmer will lead a craft class on how to make a fresh greens Christmas wreath. Partcipants will craft a Christmas wreath by hand with fresh pines, holly and more. They will also learn how to

In lieu of a food box, the organizations also provide a
hearty Christmas dinner to the residents of area senior facilities including Trinity House, St. Peter Apartments, Our Home of Hope, Marietta Senior Apartments, Brereton Manor, and Sylvan Retreat on Sunday, Dec. 29. The meals are prepared by members of Foresters of America and delivered by members of the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers and other community volunteers. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the facilities listed so that residents may sign up to receive the dinner. Businesses such as the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home will once again help provide a little Christmas cheer to families in need this season by making a donation to help purchase food for the Christmas Food Boxes. Susquehanna Valley EMS has received the 2019 Pennsylvania CARES Award. The award acknowledges the agency’s dedication to collecting out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) data for quality improvement purposes. Susquehanna Valley EMS is one of 145 EMS agencies across the commonwealth, and one of four in Lancaster County, honored by Pennsylvania CARES during October in observance of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Each year, more than 350,000 people in the United States experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. By participating in Pennsylvania CARES, Susquehanna Valley EMS demonstrates its commitment to saving lives by strengthening the links in the OHCA chain of survival. Pennsylvania CARES is a statewide partner of the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES), a national cardiac arrest registry that allows communities to measure bystander and 911 response, including information about bystander CPR and AED application, telephone CPR, and EMS response. Using this information, EMS agencies can discover promising practices and implement new programs to improve emergency care for patients in their communities. Participation in a national registry is recommended by the Institute of Medicine. Recipients of this year’s Pennsylvania CARES Award successfully participated in the registry for the 2018 calendar year and are commended for collecting data, in collaboration with and on behalf of BLS, first responder, and community partners, to measure outcomes, improve the quality of care,

The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced that Taylor Barton and Nathan Brubaker are the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month. Students selected for the honor are recognized by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during their monthly luncheon meeting. Taylor is the daughter of Michael and Danielle Barton of Marietta. She is vice president of National Honor Society (NHS), a two-year member of Math Honor Society and National Art Honor Society, and a four-year member of German Club. She has been involved in National History Day for three years. As a junior and senior, she has served as class president and a Link Crew leader. In Student Government, she was treasurer in ninth grade and has been president in 10th through 12th grades. This past spring, Taylor earned second place at the national level at National History Day 2019 and was awarded the Next Generations Angels Award. Taylor is also a member of this year’s homecoming court. She was also selected to receive the Lenfest Foundation Scholarship. Outside of school, Taylor has spent the last 15 years twirling

The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its Christmas 2019 concert series, “O Magnum Mysterium: We Sing the Mystery of Bethlehem!” Performances will be held at 4 p.m. on select Sundays, with the schedule including Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road, Lititz, on Dec. 1; Zion Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, as part of the Zion Musik Concert Series, on Dec. 8; and Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster, Jan. 5, 2020. The Heritage Chorale’s artistic director, Barry L. Sawyer, has devised a program of musical meditations on the Bethlehem miracle venerated in the medieval text “O Magnum Mysterium.” With its origins deep in the Middle Ages, the text was a responsorial chant sung as part of Christmas matins - a service celebrated near the midnight hour of Christmas Eve. The Latin text describes the Nativity scene when Christ was born and laid in a manger, where animals were witnesses to his birth. Sawyer’s program will include “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen, “Silent Night” arranged by Dan Forrest, “Born in a Stable” by Philip W. J. Stopford, “Bethlehem Down” by Peter

Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies. Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016. Small businesses are innovative. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in highpatenting manufacturing industries. That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas. Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities. Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city. Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have
endured. Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles. Small businesses keep money in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities. Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services. Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships. Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways. Here are eight ways to support local businesses: 1. Shop at small businesses regularly. 2. Use social media to give your recommendations on small businesses that go above and beyond in quality and service. 3. Speak with business owners
about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences. 4. Encourage your family or friends to make small business shopping a larger part of their overall spending plan. 5. Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or club-based fundraisers. 6. If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers, or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support. 7. Invite small business owners to community activity centers, nursing homes, schools, and the like to share their experiences about starting a business in the area. 8. In 1965, Depoe was instrumental in creating the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA), which has undertaken various conservation efforts in the Donegal Creek watershed. The DFCA’s activities led to the creation of one of the first “fly fishing only” projects in Lancaster County and the development of a naturally sustaining wild brown trout population in the Donegal Creek. Depoe’s efforts in the DFCA also led to partnerships with other conservation groups on initiatives such as a restoration project on the Donegal Creek in 1996. This project was highlighted in the document “Fixing a Broken Trout Stream.” Among the DFCA’s other activities are an annual spring outdoor show and the children’s fishing derby on the Donegal Creek. The fishing derby was first held approximately 20 years ago. Through Depoe’s mentorship, local youths have been able to gain fly fishing experience near the Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown areas. Former students and others he has mentored are now involved with the DFCA, with some holding leadership positions. Felix has served the Donegal School District for 40 years in various capacities. He started at Donegal as a social studies teacher from 1979 to 2001. He served as dean of students and assistant principal in the fall of 2000, advancing to the position of high school principal in November 2001. He served in this role until his retirement in June 2019. Additionally, he is president of the Donegal Education Foundation. Felix’s involvement at the school also included leadership in athletic programs. He served as assistant varsity football coach from 1979 to 1990 and assistant baseball coach from 1999 to 2000. In wrestling, he was the head junior high coach from 1979 to 1993, head varsity coach from 1993 to 2005, and head elementary coach beginning in 2010 and continuing to the present. Felix was athletic director from 1986 to 1989. Felix also serves the community as a member of the Mount Joy Township Parks and Recreation Commission.

Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December. “Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.
Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have with the pets in their lives makes him feel honored to create a piece for a client. Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The Lancaster Barnstormers front office has been lauded by the Atlantic League, winning two awards for the 2019 season, it was announced recently by league president Rick White. Lancaster garnered the league’s Community Service Award for the franchise that has done the greatest work aiding those in need in its particular market. In addition, the Barnstormers’ general manager, Mike Reynolds, won the Joe Klein Executive of the Year honor for his work in growing the Barnstormers’ brand and attendance during his three seasons at the

He plans to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer and has been able to glean wisdom from engineers among the crew. “It’s also helped me to learn a lot about carpentry and wiring. A number of our members are electricians,” Aidan commented. Retired industrial arts teacher Ken Stehman has enjoyed working with The Train Guys since he was recruited by Coble seven years ago. “I just enjoy tinkering with things and the problem solving that’s involved,” said Stehman. “We always end up with new challenges, because it’s never the same layout.” The 2019 display will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays,
Dec. 7, 14, and 21; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28. The exhibit will also be open from 6 to 8 p.m. for Second Friday on Dec. 13 and on Mondays, Dec. 23 and 30. Mark Yingling served as guest conductor for the Gray band. Yingling is the director of bands at Schuylkill Valley Middle School and served as conductor of the Millersville University concert band from 2011 to 2018. He has also been a finalist for the prestigious Thelma A. Robinson Award, which is presented biennially by the Conductors Guild. Aiden said that one of the difficult pieces tackled by the Blue band was “Garden Spot Galop ” by Brad Schoener, because of the many transitions. The Blue band also performed “American Frontier” by Chris Bernotas, “The Tempest” by Robert W. Smith, and “Night Train” by Eric Osterling. The guest conductor of the Blue band was Steve Selfridge, high school band director and music department coordinator in Garnet Valley School District. Selfridge received the PMEA District 12 Citation of Excellence in 2016 and currently serves as vice president of PMEA District 12. “Everybody absolutely loved (the concert). Afterward my parents were smothering me with hugs and saying what a great job I did,” relayed Annabelle. “It was cool for them to see us playing harder music,” remarked Emily. “My parents said that it was hard to believe we’re only in sixth grade,” Makenna said. “Everyone we were playing with had the same skill level, so it was fun to play together.” DIS music teacher and band and jazz band director Meagan Caterbone nominated each student musician based on his or her advanced skill level. Once nominated by their band director, students had to meet a specific set of criteria in order to be selected. In reflecting on being selected for the honors band, the group of sixth-graders agreed that practicing their instruments is primarily what helped them to reach the accomplishment. Aside from practicing as often as possible, the students advised younger or newer musicians to make sure they have fun with whatever musical endeavors they choose to pursue. “Practice a lot and have fun with it. If you’re not motivated, you’re not going to want to practice. And if you don’t like your instrument, you’re not going to be motivated,” said Annabelle. The students also expressed gratitude to Caterbone for helping them along the way. “She’s really funny, and she makes it fun,” said Jordyn.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark
Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category.
The project consisted of a sixstory overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges. Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the
building rose. James Craft & Son Inc. was hired to perform the mechanical piping and HVAC for the vertical expansion and received many deliveries at its own warehouse to transport to the jobsite. Working in an occupied facility next to highly sensitive areas and minimizing the disruption to the hospital staff’s ability to treat patients was the highest priority. Class Of 1959 Holds Reunion The Donegal High School Class of 1959 held its 60th class reunion dinner on Sept. 14 at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy. A total of 45 classmates and 21 spouses and guests were present. Lorin “Larry” Pardoe shared an opening talk, and Luke Brubaker gave the invocation. Following a group photo of classmates at 6 p.m., a family-style dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. The meal consisted of tossed salad, sirloin roast beef, stuffed chicken breast, green beans, a grilled vegetable medley, au gratin potatoes, dinner rolls, iced cinnamon bread, cherry crumb pie, chocolate cake with peanut butter icing, and vanilla ice cream, along with an assortment of hot and cold beverages. After dinner, John Harnish read the list of the 28 deceased classmates and Ron Vogle memoralized them by the ringing of a bell. Don White gave a reading of “The Dangers of Attending a 60th Class Reunion.” Marcia Engle Landis chipped in to make it more humorous. Two tables in the rear of the room were filled with posterboards with photos of the deceased classmates as well as scrapbooks containing news and other information by Darla Kulp Schorr. The yearbooks from 1954 through 1959 were also available, along with some elementary school photos from Florin, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown. Also for review were the group photos

Mount Joy Rotary Recognizes Students The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced that Ella DeBruin and Remy Kanegene are the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month. Students selected for this honor are recognized by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during their monthly luncheon meeting. Ella is the daughter of Troy and Amy DeBruin of Mount Joy. She is a two-year member of National Honor Society (NHS) and a threeyear member of the Spanish club, and she has been a Link Crew leader for two years. She has been on the cross-country, track and field, and basketball teams throughout high school. She was also involved in prayer group in 10th and 11th grades. Outside of school, Ella plays piano, participates in youth group, and volunteers in the nursery at Proclamation Presbyterian Church. After graduation, she plans to attend college to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner and to minor in Spanish. Remy is the son of Jeremie and

Food Banks Receive Donated Turkeys Giant Food Stores donated 7,000 turkeys to 13 partner food banks located in communities served by the company. An annual tradition, the 2019 turkey donation took place on Nov. 5 in advance of the holiday season to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for those in need. The following food banks received turkeys: Blue Ridge Area Food Bank (Verona, Va.), Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Chester County Food Bank, Family & Community Services of Delaware County, Helping Harvest (Reading), Lancaster County Food Hub, Manna on Main Street (Lansdale),
Maryland Food Bank - Western Branch (Hagerstown, Md.), Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank (Nazareth), State College Food Bank, United Neighborhood Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania (Scranton), and York County Food Bank. In addition to the turkey donation, Giant and Martin’s team members spent the day volunteering by organizing and restocking shelves to help partner food banks in advance of the busy holiday season. Giant and Martin’s also gave customers the opportunity to donate their free turkey certificate to a food bank.
