Winterfest Will Ring In The Season BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The event will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. along Delta and Henry streets and in the parking lot of Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St. “This is the 23rd year for Winterfest,” said Dave Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy. “It’s a fun and festive way to kick off the holiday season.” Typically, Winterfest would be held along Main Street and would culminate in the annual tree lighting, but things had to change slightly this year. The new location will allow for more social distancing, and the tree will already be lit at the time of the event, Schell said. Although some changes will be made this year, the event will still include aspects the community looks forward to. “Winterfest will feature food, entertainment and vendors,” Schell stated. “ We’ll also have Santa (available for visits) at Sheetz Funeral Home.” He said area businesses, nonprofits and churches will participate in the festivities, offering food like homemade whoopie pies and one-of-a-kind items from Mount Joy stores. Many shops in Mount Joy will be open, and others will have booths in the Winterfest area. The day will provide an opportunity to get to know more about what the town has to offer. “This is a great way for anyone to come

Looking for lunch on Saturday, Dec. 12? Look no further than JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, where the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems will hold a barbecue fundraiser at beginning at 10 a.m. until sold out. Although the club holds barbecues twice a year, this one will be a little different, said Ben Osterhout, barbecue coordinator and past president of the club. “This is the first time we’ve partnered with Peters’ Barbecue, and we’ll be offering chicken barbecue and pork barbecue,” he explained. “In the past, we’ve only done See Barbecue pg 4

for the community to support the local economy. “All of the big-box stores were able to stay open all year, but that wasn’t true for all small businesses,” he explained. “This is a great way to support them going into their holiday season, which for most is their busiest time of the year.”

library and service projects in downtown Mount Joy.” Among those service projects is the beautification of two parks, he said. “We just installed a new picnic pavilion at Kunkle Field Borough Park, and we work with the Mount Joy Borough to maintain Old Standby Park,” he remarked. “We take care of the plants there and help with upkeep of the park.” The club typically holds barbecues in July and December, and Osterhout said the December one is always more popular. “I think people are looking for something tasty, and they are out doing things, or they are busy at home this time of year, and this is a great way to get a quick meal,” he stated. “If you’re making Christmas cookies in the morning, this is a perfect lunch.” Tickets for the barbecue may be picked up at JB Hostetter or the Mount Joy Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., or through any Kiwanis Club member. Preorders must be picked up by noon on the day of the barbecue.

Holiday Dinner Giveaway Slated The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to

provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of

Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, will offer hugs on Sunday, Nov. 29, at 4 p.m. Instead of a physical embrace, however, the church hopes to offer Healing, Understanding, Gratitude, and Strength (HUGS) through a livestreamed service to those carrying pain and loss into the Advent season. “The first Christmas without someone you love can be a difficult time,” said Linda Anspach, who coined HUGS. “Knowing there are others who care, going through similar feelings, (can be reassuring). We hope Wayside can be a source of affirmation that those feelings are normal even expected - and help people feel less alone.” Wayside pastor Stephen Fritz noted that addressing feelings of grief right away instead of letting them build through the holiday season can make it easier to face loss. “The HUGS service is scheduled intentionally on the first Sunday in Advent, offering recognition and validation for people struggling with

Christmas spirit will be in the air during Holidays at Mount Hope. Holiday activities at the Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, will include the annual Holiday Dinner Theater and the Holiday Open House. This is the 37th year for the dinner theater, said Candace Smith, director of sales and communications for Mount Hope Estate and Winery and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. The event evolved from a Charles

Dickens Christmas into the interactive show it is today, held in the 19th-century mansion on site. Although some changes will be in place this year, including limiting the number of guests allowed inside the buildings, the spirit of the events will remain intact. “Both the dinner theater and open house have become traditions for many of our visitors, and we look forward to providing these seasonal opportunities in a safe and merry way,” she noted. “We offer unique alternatives to modern-day holiday celebrations. From the decorated Victorian mansion to the gourmet dinner of the dinner theater, from the chance to

take a safe holiday photo with Father Christmas to a place to find one-of-a-kind gifts, they are both celebrations that will be cherished.” Mount Hope’s Holiday Dinner Theater performances will run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 20. Over the years, Krasley has worked on his yard to make room for the ever-growing display. “When I first started this, I didn’t have a wide-open property for it, so I took out a lot of old trees,” he explained. His home is located on a cul-desac, which makes the perfect spot for visitors to view the display from their cars, and his property is a bit isolated, so the light show doesn’t bother neighbors. For the past 10 years, Krasley has been collecting donations for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA in Hershey as part of his display, although donations are optional. “I like what the Ronald McDonald House does for families. They are a great organization,” he stated,

Don Krasley loves Christmas, and it shows. For the past 14 years, he has set up a Christmas display in his yard at 525 Woodland Drive, Manheim, and has invited the public to stop by and watch a light show set to music. His display will run every night from Thursday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021. The hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Krasley Christmas, which is what he calls his display, started as a joke between Krasley and his brother, who sent him a video of a commercial showing an elaborate display. “He was like, ‘Is this your house?’ as a joke, but it lit a fire in me,” Krasley recalled. “I said, ‘I can do that.’ And I did.” He was influenced by his grandfather, who had a display in his yard in Manheim and who passed on his love of Christmas. What started as a relatively modest display has grown to include more than 80,000 lights and a lengthy show choreographed to music that Krasley chooses and programs. It takes Krasley about three weeks to set up the display, but he spends time all year working on it, whether he’s adding new songs or picking up new items for his yard. A few years ago, he switched to all LED lights, which has significantly cut down on his electric bill, he said, noting that he spends about $50 a month to operate the display. Additionally, Krasley is an electrician by trade, so he keeps costs down by doing almost all of the wiring and other electrical

Christmas Light Display Slated Stone Gables Estate, 1160 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, will present a 2.6-mile Christmas Light Drive-Thru event featuring over 600,000 LED lights. The new entrance to the event will be found at Brittany’s Hope, 1160 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. The third annual event will include new 6-foot, colorchanging Christmas lightbulbs at the entrance, hundreds of lighted trees, a lifesize Nativity scene, the origins of Christmas traditions, a celebration of the birth and life of Christ illustrated with lights and signage, and vehicles and structures decorated with lights. The event is a drive-through only event, with no opportunity to park and walk around the site. The event will be open on
