is a great day to get out and get into the Christmas spirit,” said Jason Spickler, describing the Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes. “You can do some shopping, do some sightseeing and see some beautiful decorating techniques and get inspiration from them.” The tour will be held on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is the 56th year for the event, which is sponsored by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA). This year’s tour will feature eight private homes as well as a local artist showcase, holiday marketplaces and more.

“We try to have a variety of different types of homes, some older and more historical and some newer,” said Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour with Rebecca Baltozer. “We have a couple of homes featured on the tour that have never been on the tour before.”

Both of the public buildings that MRA supports - the Old Town Hall Museum and the Union Meeting House - will be open during the tour as well. “The Union Meeting House will feature displays from Elizabethtown College that focus on Marietta,” Spickler noted.

At Marietta Center for the Arts, a Dickens Christmas Market and Grog Shop, featuring handmade home décor, refreshments and live music,

will operate the same hours as the tour. MH Art Gallery and Studio will showcase “Small Town Glow,” original works inspired by small-town life, during the tour. Marietta Community House will host a vendor market, and Pioneer Fire Company No. 1 will hold a chicken and waffles dinner, Spickler said.

This year’s tour will also feature a collection of Nativity scenes from members of the community. If people are interested in lending a display to share during the tour, they may contact Traci at 717-979-8521 or pastortri1016@gmail.com.

Spickler emphasized that not only does the tour offer a way to see creative decorating, but it also raises funds for MRA. The

organization works to preserve and protect the history of Marietta.

“The tour is just a great community day in Marietta,” Spickler said.

“It’s a way to bring everyone together to enjoy the town, to see some unique decorations and to have fun.”

Advance tickets are available for a discount. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the tour at Donegal Intermediate School, 1177 River Road; Old Town Museum, 3 W. Walnut St.; and First National Escape Bank, 100 W. Market St. Parking and shuttle bus service will be available at all three locations. For more information, search for “56th Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes” on Facebook.

On Oct. 27, there was a whole lot of reading going on in Mount Joy. Students at Donegal schools as well as children at the Milanof-Schock Library participated in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record challenge to promote early literacy. The campaign is known as the world’s largest shared reading experience, bringing together millions of adults and children as they read the same book on the same day and build an intergenerational community through reading.

About 40 Donegal High School student-athletes in grades 11 and 12 traveled to Donegal Intermediate School and Donegal Primary School to read this year’s book, “Nigel and the Moon.” On the same day, the library’s director of children and youth, Jan Betty, read the book during story time. The Norlanco-

Rheems Kiwanis Club purchased copies of the book for the classrooms at the primary school.

Betty reached out to Alex Stam, a social studies teacher, and Hannah Ferrara, head of the high school’s English department, to recruit students to participate in Read for the Record. The teachers saw the

event as an opportunity to connect their students with the community. “An event like this is important for many different reasons,” Stam shared. “It’s important for us to be connected. Our motto is Every Name, Every Need, One Tribe. Even though we are separated by buildings, we are One Tribe.”

Ferrara emphasized the relationships that were created at Read for the Record.

“The high-schoolers that participated in the event remembered when they were in the primary and intermediate school when they were read to,” she said. “It’s a special opportunity for all students, and it’s so cool to see the

impact it has on both the older and younger students.”

Both teachers said the activity was well-received by everyone involved. “The readers enjoyed seeing all the students, reading to them and asking and answering questions,” Stam remarked. “The younger kids loved it. They were so attentive during the story and asked some great questions to the high-schoolers.”

Ferrara added that the interaction went both ways.

“(The younger students) answered questions the highschoolers asked them, too,” she commented. “We heard what so many of them wanted to be when they grow up.”

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, will celebrate the season of Advent beginning with a healing service on Sunday, Nov. 27, the first Sunday of Advent. This year’s theme is “In Plain Sight.”

During Advent, the church will have a Facebook scavenger hunt. Each week, there will be a posted challenge to find the Advent object that will be featured in the message that Sunday. Participants can take a photo of what they find and post it on www.facebook.com /ConnectStMarks; the participant whose post receives the most likes each week will be awarded a gift card.

An Advent Bible study, “Prepare the Way for the Lord,” will start on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. A Zoom option will be available and possibly a 1 p.m. session, if there is interest. Copies of the book are available for purchase, but individuals do not need to buy a book to participate.

To share blessings during Advent, the church will distribute a reverse Advent calendar with a list of food items that Mount Joy Helping Services needs. Each day, participants can place the daily item in a box. Boxes can be brought to church weekly or on Christ-

mas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, when all the boxes will be dedicated during worship services at 1 and 7 p.m.

Starting Sunday, Nov. 27, St. Mark’s will begin collecting warm hats, gloves, scarves, and socks, which will be hung on a line outside the Ministry Center. Anyone who has a need can take what they need.

A photo booth will be set up in the church Welcome Center for families to take Christmas photos. In addition to lighting Advent candles weekly, the church also will drop a candle banner outside the Welcome Center each Sunday to mark the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love.

Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week

course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsyl-

vania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”

Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each

session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.

“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”

Dunkle has been a pastor’s wife and speaker for 45 years. She also was the mid-

dle school Bible teacher at Manheim Christian Day School for 18 years. She and her husband, the Rev. Jeff Dunkle, have retired but are still involved in ministries. She sings in a gospel quartet, One Heart - One Voice, with two of her sisters and brother-in-law.

Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”

This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours

one way to attend,” Long pointed out.

He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.

The program also encourages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The

kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”

Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

Joy Runs Through This Room

the display laid out by The Train Guys.

from their childhood.”

Wonder, amazement and joy all live in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library for several weeks in November and December. Those are just some of the emotions Craig Coble witnesses when people come to see

“For the kids, it’s a lot of big-eyed wonderment at things they’ve never seen before,” said Coble. “The expressions I get to see on the kids’ faces are great. And then the older crowd gets misty eyed, remembering trains

For the first time since 2019, The Train Guys will operate their display at the library, 10 S. Market St., beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. “That night coincides with the Elizabethtown Christmas tree lighting, so people can come see the trains when they come to that,” Coble noted. “And it’s also our first responders’ night, so we’re inviting all first responders to come see the trains.”

The Train Guys begin setting up the layouts in midOctober, Coble explained, noting that the core group includes about 20 volunteers.

“One of things that sets us apart is we have 50 push buttons throughout the room that people can use to start trains and operate accessories,” Coble stated.

He noted that the group sets up the display not just to entertain visitors, but also to support the library. “Most of the folks in our group have a strong incentive to give back to our community,” he shared, noting that proceeds from suggested donations for admission as well as a silent auction and giveaway drawing at the display benefit the library.

As visitors enter the display from the hallway, they can enjoy a circus and amusement park scene, and they’ll be greeted by costumed characters, including a railroad hobo, police officer and engineer.

Once inside the room, they’ll see a display that fea-

tures up to 20 trains running at once, through everything from urban to rural landscapes. “We even have dignitaries who visit from time to time,” Coble said, pointing out Laurel and Hardy waiting on a train platform.

Elizabethtown’s past can be found throughout the layout, including the old schoolhouse that now houses the Elizabethtown Historical Society and a ballfield replica of the one used by the Klein Chocolate Company team. One area of the display features standard-gauge trains, which Coble pointed out are very unusual to see in operation. “We only bring these out about every three years or so,” he stated. “These train cars are up to 100 years old.” The display ends with garden-scale trains set up on the floor on an indoor/outdoor carpet.

For Jack Messick, 8, who helped his grandfather work on setting up the layout, the trains offer entertainment and fun. “I like pushing the buttons,” he said. “I like the light-up stuff and I like watching the trains run. It’s just cool.”

The Train Guys will operate the display on Tuesdays and Thursdays in December from 6 to 7:30 p.m. as well as from 5 to 7 p.m. on Second Friday, Dec. 9. The display will also operate on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., when a shuttle will be offered between the library display and a train display at Masonic Village. Marking The Season With Gifts That Give Hope

In 2021, Gifts That Give Hope founder Jenn Knepper made a few changes in the annual celebration. First, the event returned to its original venue, and second, it moved to a Sunday so that attendees could enjoy a little shopping following church. The formula was successful, and this year, the gift fair will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

The 2022 fair will feature 45 nonprofit organizations offering environmentally friendly and ethically sourced gifts, along with food and beverages from local eateries and food trucks. Father Christmas will be present for pictures, visits, and interactive story reading, and a number of children’s authors will be on-site.

Several organizations will be at the fair for the first time this year, including the fledgling Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence, which is starting a Lancaster chapter. The group held its first event at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in September. At the fair, representatives hope to offer education and raise both funds and awareness. “There have been 75 gun homicides in the last 10 years in

Lancaster County,” said representative Sue Heilman, who added the group hopes to influence young people with a pledge concerning firearms.

Josiah Groff started Big Picture Soccer three years ago when he and his wife were serving at an orphanage in Juarez, Mexico.

“We work with local leaders in communities in poverty,” said Groff, who now lives in Lancaster. “We give them resources and training so they are able to start soccer clubs for the youth in those communities.” According to Groff, the goal is to use soccer clubs to build character, inspire hope, and provide opportunities.

Big Picture has a club in Uganda, and Groff is working to start a club in Lancaster city that will give immigrant and refugee populations opportunities to connect with the community. Attendees at the fair can help Big Picture by sponsoring teams or purchasing equipment.

Group To Host Christmas Program

The Elizabethtown/Mount Joy Christian Women’s Connection invites area ladies to its “The Perfect Gift” brunch, to be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 9:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Youth Center, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown. The set price is inclusive.

Julie Nevel, a vocalist, songwriter, and recording artist

from Enola, will present a Christmas program. The speaker, Irene McFadden from Elton, will share family Christmas memories and talk about finding the greatest gift.

Prepaid reservations must be received by Thursday, Dec. 1. For more information or to make a reservation, call Sandy at 717-367-1054.

When dancer Libby Shannon Miller of Lititz was killed at the age of 10 in a car accident in February, her parents, Brooke Carlock and David Miller, knew they wanted to do something to promote dance in their daughter’s memory.

“(Libby) was a competitive dancer,” said Brooke. “Dance was her life and passion.”

David agreed, recalling, “She was (at the dance studio) six days a week.” Knowing the costs of lessons, costumes, and competitions, Libby’s parents decided to raise money to provide scholarships for dance students. Live Like Libby

scholarships are available for eligible students as nominated by local dance studios. People who donate during the fair will support these scholarships.

Brooke said that the name was chosen based on chalk messages written by Libby’s fellow John R. Bonfield Elementary students. “It was perfect for her (because) she was so full of joy and life and kind to everyone,” said Brooke.
