It’s “a bit of nostalgia mixed with patriotism, wrapped up in a hilarious storyline.” That’s how director Ginger Wayde describes “Radio Daze.” The play will be performed by students in the Elizabethtown
Homeschool Drama Program, part of the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) homeschool co-op in Mount Joy. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

SantaClaus is coming to town, and you can visit him at the Milanof-Schock Library. Santa will be at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The visits are sponsored by the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, which has been holding the holiday celebration for seven years. “We are thankful to the library for helping us to host this annual event,” said Kerry Meyers, executive director of the Chamber. “Santa will be excitedly waiting to hear what each child would like for Christmas.”
Along with sharing their wish lists with the jolly old elf, children will receive a holiday-themed coloring page, crayons and a cookie, courtesy of Chamber Diamond member and major sponsor Lanco Federal Credit Union. The credit
union will also provide each family with a free 5-by-7-inch color photo.
At the Nov. 26 visit, the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library will have make-and-take crafts for children and will sell kids’ Christmas books and tickets to win a gingerbread house. The Friends’ Book Nook at the library will also be open. On Dec. 10, there will be Christmas books, cookies and gingerbread house tickets for sale.
The library will have a food truck on-site at the Santa visits, featuring cupcakes, hot chocolate, coffee and hot cider for purchase.
The Chamber will sell its 2022 ornaments, featuring the Good Ship Mountjoy, on each date. A small number of 2021 ornaments will also be available while supplies last. A discount will be offered for the 2021 ornaments or for purchasing both ornaments together. Selecting the ship that gave the town its name was an easy choice for the ornament, Meyers said, noting, “It
was actually a unanimous board decision, since it is a part of Mount Joy’s history.” Ornaments will also be for sale at the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., on Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Meyers explained that hosting events like the visit with Santa is an important part of the Chamber. “The Chamber is all about giving back to the community for supporting our local Chamber member businesses,” she stated, adding that all Chamber events are free to the community. “We couldn’t do these free events without our Chamber members, Upgraded Chamber members and the support we receive from our members doing sponsorships for our annual fundraisers like our Chamber Giving Tree and Chamber chicken barbecue,” she shared. “The public support of our annual chicken barbecue is also a huge part of our annual fundraising.”

The business opened in 1927 when Joseph B. Hostetter - Jack and Kent’s grandfather - retired from farming in Rapho Township and purchased Gabe Moyer’s Hardware Store on West Donegal Street in Mount Joy. Two years later, he purchased Brown Brothers Hardware at 35 W. Main St. In 1963, the company incorporated as JB Hostetter and Sons, and in 1970, the business joined the True Value Hardware Wholesale Cooperative, which currently has more than 5,000 member stores. In 1972, the company opened a second location at
93 E. Main St., acquiring the former H.S. Newcomer and Sons hardware store. Jack and Kent helped to run this location, along with their father, Arthur, and their mother, Clara. Arthur, however, envisioned something even bigger.
“It was always my dad’s vision to move the store to a larger location,” Jack recalled, noting that when Arthur found out that the 5-acre property at 1225 W. Main St. was for sale, he proposed the idea of combining the two stores in Mount Joy into one. The current location opened on July 5, 1984.

Over the years, the store has expanded several times, including increasing the parking lot size and adding a rental department, greenhouse and large warehouse space to reach its current size of 64,000 square feet.
Jack and Kent, who is the company vice president, employ about 65 people. Along with an emphasis on customer service, Jack attributes the store’s longevity to what shoppers can find on the shelves. “One of the things that makes us unique is we have such a large variety - greenhouse, rentals, paint, mower repair, housewares, major appliance repair,” he commented. “We cut keys and do some locksmith work. We do a tremendous amount of screen and window repair. We do a significant business in used appliance and used lawn equipment sales. … I’m even amazed sometimes at some of the things we have in here.”
JB Hostetter & Sons has also developed a reputation for giving back to the community, whether by allowing groups to hold car washes or chicken barbecues in the parking lot or by hosting regular blood drives at the store.
“We’re part of the community, and we want to help other organizations,” Jack said. “If they have the initiative and work ethic to go out and make money, why not help them with that opportunity?”
As he looks toward celebrating a century in business, Jack emphasized that he’s grateful for loyal customers over the years as well as loyal employees. He also welcomes newcomers who stop in to shop, noting, “Two things I hear from people when they come into the store for the first time are, ‘Growing up, we used to have a store like this, but it’s not there anymore’ and ‘You guys have everything here.’”

Set in the 1940s during World War II, “Radio Daze” focuses on a melodramatic soap opera at a radio station. Americans are doing all they can to support the war effort, including keeping an eye out for spies, one of whom might be lurking at the radio station. The show is full of comedy, romance, rumors and misunderstandings, and it’s fun for the whole family, Wayde said.
The cast members range in age from seventh- to 12th-graders, which presented a unique challenge since most of them were not familiar with the play’s time period, Wayde noted. “Early on in the process, one of my seniors found a skit on YouTube of a Foley artist - the people who did the sound effects - who totally flubbed up her job,” Wayde stated. “It was hilarious, and we all passed it around and got into the groove of what a radio program could look and sound like.”
The group, which includes more than 30 LEC students in the cast and crew, also discussed what it was like to be a young adult female at home while soldiers were overseas. “The girls felt that the actresses in the play talked about men too much, but I shared with them the very real concern about not being able to find a spouse to settle down with and raise a family,” Wayde commented. “It’s a concept none of us have had to face.”
LEC is a homeschool group made up of more than 50 families. “LEC is a wonderful homeschooling community,” Wayde said. “Not only does it give kids a chance to gather with others in a group learning environment, it also gives moms a much-needed opportunity to connect with other moms and find support and encour-
agement on their homeschooling journeys.” The drama program is just one of many classes available to secondary students in the co-op. Wayde has been directing shows for LEC for 10 years, and she credits both her production team and the students with helping to put on quality performances that are always free, a goal Wayde wants to maintain.
“It is a fun night of family-friendly entertainment, not only in content, but also in price,” she said of “Radio Daze.” “There will be fun
comedy, a professionally choreographed fight scene, excellent costuming and wonderful music. …
No cost does not mean low quality.”
The program relies on donations from the community to put on shows and also sells concessions and cast shout-outs at performances. “Coming to the show will be time well spent,” Wayde said.
“You will not regret it.”

Program To Discuss Doc Holliday
The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host David Manuel as the guest speaker at its monthly meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 21, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.
Manuel will continue his discussion from March about John H. Holliday’s metamorphosis to Doc Holliday, a legend of the old West. Manuel, in the persona of Doc Holliday, will trace Doc’s life, including his arrival in Tombstone, his involvement in the gunfight at the O.K. Christmas At Kraybill Planned
The fourth annual Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration has been set for Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.
The event will feature approximately 40 local artisans, crafters, and vendors, many selling handmade items. Among the goods for sale will be hand-turned wooden bowls and other woodcarved items, jewelry, quilts, ornaments, home decor, local honey, and children’s toys and books.
Some highlights of the annual event include wagon rides provided by the Granville Farms Clydesdales and gingerbread cookie kits containing individually wrapped gingerbread cookies with icing and assorted candies for decorating.
New this year will be a brisket and chili cook-off, for which Gene Wenger’s Meats and Fine Foods in Elizabethtown has donated 100 pounds of brisket. Attendees can purchase tasting tickets at the event and vote for the cookoff winners. Tastings will conclude at 1 p.m. so that the winners can be announced.
The craft fair is designed to support local artisans and crafters while raising funds for special programs at Kraybill. Funds raised will be used to provide supplies for Kraybill’s new greenhouse and to offset the cost of the school’s eighth-grade trip.
For more information about the event, search for “Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration” on Facebook.

David Manuel as Doc Holliday
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
There was one simple plan for the York Suburban offense - give the ball to Mikey Bentivegna.
The Suburban running back gained 257 yards on 28 carries, leading the Trojans to a 41-6 victory over the Donegal Indians on Friday night, November 4, at York. The Trojans entered the District Three Class 4A playoffs as the fourth seed while Donegal entered as the 10th seed. With the top six ranked teams
getting a first-round bye, seeds 7 through 10 battled for a chance to make the district quarterfinals.
“He’s a really good running back - he’s tough to stop,” Donegal head coach Chad Risberg said of Bentivegna.
On the night, Bentivegna scored six rushing touchdowns. After a fourth-down conversion attempt failed for the Indians (4-7) on the Trojans’ 22-yard line, Bentivegna broke out for a 78-yard dash to the endzone.
He scored on an 80-yard
dash to give York Suburban (7-4) a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Trojans had taken over after a blocked field goal.
“We had some chances but couldn’t find the endzone,” Risberg said.
In the second quarter, Bentivegna added scoring runs of 51, 11 and 61. He also scored early in the third quarter on a 63-yard run.
Donegal got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Sawyer Floyd to De’Andre White.
Tyler Sload led the Indians’ offense. He had 53 rushing yards on nine carries. He caught two passes for 19 yards.
White and Ruben Mumper rushed for 33 and 32 yards, respectively, on the night.
Donegal ends its season at 4-7, having qualified for districts with a decisive 37-6 defeat of Octorara in the regular-season finale.
“I am proud of what the team accomplished this year,” Risberg said. “The seniors showed great leadership and dedication to the program. Their hard work helped take the team to the district playoffs. I am grateful to have been their coach.”
CROSS COUNTRY
In the girls’ PIAA Class 2A cross country championship race at the Parkview course in Hershey, the Donegal runners
finished 17th in the team standings on Saturday, November 5.
Donegal, paced by sophomore Kathryn Fernald, compiled 403 team points. Cathedral Prep claimed first in the team standings with 111 points with Danville Area a close second (115) Montour at 119 and Beaver fourth (120).
Lancaster-Lebanon League opponent Annville-Cleona took 13th on the day with
339 points.
Fernald ran the race in 22:07.7 to earn 91st place.
Marleigh Ballard (22:52.3) and sophomore Addison Houck (23:03.20) were 135th and 140th, respectively.
Freshman Molly Myers clocked a 25:15.30 pace, Baily Shoaf ran a 27:16.20 while Natalie Greiner (27:24.20) and Emma Myers (28:56.4) rounded out the lineup.

DHS Class Of 1955 Holds Reunion
Sign Up For The Great Turkey Chase
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Thanksgiving morning, the streets of Elizabethtown will be overrun with people chasing turkeys. The Great Turkey Chase will be held on Thursday, Nov. 24, beginning at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Registration
will open at 6:45 a.m., and the race will start at 8:15 a.m.
As race director Grace Wells explained, participants won’t really be chasing turkeys during the 5K run/walk.
“We will have stuffed turkeys located throughout the course, and when people find one, they can bring it to the end of the race and we’ll have frozen
turkeys for them,” she shared.
The event was formerly called the Great Turkey Hunt, but Wells noted that the name was changed this year for clarity. “The feedback we received made it sound like it was a hunting event, and we wanted to be clear that it’s a race event,” she said.

The first class of Donegal High School (DHS), which graduated in 1955, recently celebrated its 65th reunion. Those in attendance were (front, from left) John Hershey, Dick Hallgren, Sonja Carver Bates, Mary Louise Murry Kline, (second row) John Hiestand, Helen Gorman McCurdy, Patty Hughes Yoder, Barbara Warfel Heinaman, Karleen Raffensperger Ney, Kitty Wittle Crider, (back) Ken Good, Faye Stephens Anspach, Agnes Rosenfeld Hacker, Jim Longenecker, Bob Melhorn, Gail Shelly Hawthorne, Jere Thome, Jim Brubaker, Dave Weidman, John Heisey, and Jim Smith.
Prizes will be awarded in various age groups, including age 14 and under and ages 15 to 19, and then in 10-year groups up to age 80-plus.
“We have gotten 80-plus-year-olds who participated in the past, and I want to be sure we recognize them for coming out,” Wells said.
New this year, the event will feature a kids’ run, beginning at 9:15 a.m. The kids’ course will feature an approximately 1-mile run, with the possibility of shorter distances as well, depending on the turnout. “I’ve always loved kids’ runs, and last year, we were working with ECHOS to set up the race, and they suggested adding one, so I decided to go for it this year,” Wells said. The kids’ run will be sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys in Elizabethtown.
Although the event is not being coordinated with ECHOS this year, proceeds from the race will still benefit the organization, Wells remarked. ECHOS provides family
morning.
and individual supportive services, information and resources, eviction prevention and diversion, emergency shelter programs, job readiness and workforce development and more.
Last year, 169 runners participated in the race, and Wells noted that she hopes to reach 200 participants in this year’s event.
“It’s a very friendly course, very manageable,” she said. “It’s a fun family event that even the youngest ones can do. If they can’t do the 5K,
they can participate in the kids’ run, or we also have a lot of parents who push their kids in strollers. It’s a nice thing to do with your family before you go home and eat your Thanksgiving meal.”
For more information on the Great Turkey Chase or to register, visit https://runsignup.com and search for “Great Turkey Chase 5K.” Online registration will end at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, but people may register in person at the event.
