Honoring Veterans in Marietta Honoring veterans is important to the board of the Marietta Community House, said Nancy Kulman, board secretary. With a long history of recognizing veterans, the organization will host a special event on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. The Marietta Community House is located at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. “I would encourage people to come to honor our veterans who served our country and for those currently serving,” Kulman said. “They deserve our thanks and gratitude.” Although the event is organized by the Marietta Community House, multiple community groups and individuals will participate in the program. Members of the Marietta Legion Post No. 466 will join the community house in recognizing all local heroes, including Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, in whose honor the community house was formed. The Honor Guard from Boy Scout Troop 53 will present the colors, and Rep. Tom Jones will discuss what Veterans Day means to him and remember those who have served. Local historian James Landis will present a brief history of Marietta veterans and their contributions to our country throughout the years. Other local officials and members of Marietta Legion Post No. 466 will also share their stories, and Donegal High School student Lily Graybill will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and other patriotic songs. “ The Marietta Community House was formed in honor of Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who died in WWI,” Kulman said.

bout two years ago, Lydia Branham, now 16, met a man who would inspire her to write a children’s book. She’d seen Charlie Hallgren, now 96, around her Mount Joy neighborhood, taking his daily walks and waving to people he passed. She finally met Charlie after her father started repair work at Charlie’s house and Lydia and her two younger sisters tagged along. “When I first walked up to his house, I was immediately struck by his flower garden,” Lydia recalled, noting the elaborate space taking up most of Charlie’s backyard. “I was thinking about this man in his 90s tending this beautiful garden, and I thought, ‘I have to write something about this.’” Through conversations with Charlie, Lydia changed her mind about the book’s theme, focusing on Charlie’s life experience instead. “She got nosing around the house and asking questions,” Charlie said with a chuckle. From their conversations, Lydia wrote “Charlie,” a self-published book that came out earlier this year and is geared toward young readers ages 10 to 16. “It’s a brief biographical memoir about a Korean War vet named Charlie. He’s 96 and he walks miles every day,” Lydia said. “It traces his childhood from working

A previous year’s Veterans Day program at Marietta Community House
“The Marietta Community House’s purpose is ‘for the promotion of the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social and physical welfare of men, women and children in our community.’ It was felt that this would be an appropriate event to fulfill this purpose. We are pleased to join with the local American Legion Post No. 466 to honor our veterans, and (we) encourage others to join us.” Built in 1871 by Dr. John Huston for his nephew, the building that now houses the Marietta Community House remained a private residence until 1909, when it became a sanitarium that administered rabies vaccines to children. In 1919, as World War I was ending, the Hiestands purchased the building and donated the house to the community of Marietta. Over the years, the building has housed an American Legion post, a public library, a wellbaby clinic, a soup kitchen and the Pennsylvania School for the Arts, among other

organizations. It now serves as a wedding and special event venue, with a focus on a variety of community events throughout the year. Kulman noted that following the ceremony, there will be a dedication of new bricks from the community house’s buy-abrick program. “ We also welcome those who wish to donate a brick in honor of a veteran,” she said. “This project honors and remembers local individuals and businesses. A reading of the inscriptions will occur, as well as comments from the donors.” Money raised through the brick project has been used to repair and maintain the Marietta Community House for use by the community. The program will conclude with a brief reception and refreshments. There is no charge to attend, and the event is open to the public. tary, Charlie drove a limo for more than 20 years, transporting people to area airports. While he was still stationed in Washington state, he met Marie, who would become his wife in 1950. Together, they had three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and they enjoyed a happy marriage until Marie’s death in 2011. Not long after, Charlie met Esther Marrero when she came to his house as a hospice volunteer. The pair enjoys companionship today. Lydia said she was surprised to learn the details of Charlie’s life and eager to tell his story. She found an illustrator for her book through her church, Crossway Church in Millersville. The picture on the book’s cover shows Charlie wearing his Air Force hat, smiling and waving. “I try to do about 13,000 steps a day, so that gives me about three and a half miles, and at the end of the month I walk more than my age - 97 miles,” Charlie said proudly. He’s also proud of the fact that when it’s time to renew his driver’s license, he’ll be 100 years old. “They asked me when I got my current license, ‘Do you want to be an organ donor?’” Charlie recalled. “I said, ‘Hell yeah, but put down “slightly used.”’” Through writing the book, Lydia and Charlie became fast friends despite their vast age difference and life experiences. Lydia, who is a homeschooled high school junior, had written some books before this one, but “Charlie” is the first book she’s tried to sell. “I think this book will appeal to lots of people in the community, because they might know Charlie from seeing him walk, but now they’re getting the back story of this person they’ve only seen or briefly talked to while he’s walking around,” Lydia said. She credits her parents, Joshy and Jennifer Branham, with helping her publish the book, and she said it came together easily for one reason: “I had a good subject.” Charlie, for his part, is humble about his life but said he’s happy with how the book turned out. “I think she did a heck of a job,” he said. Esther hopes Lydia will write a sequel. “I think she could do a second book on Charlie, because there are a lot of stories there,” she said. “She only scratched the surface.” “Charlie” is available for purchase at www.boazpress.com or on Amazon.

for his father’s milk and ice business through his military career as an Air Force pilot. And then I kind of tie into it a central theme of his house, because his house on Marietta Avenue is where he was born, and it’s where he still lives today.” Charles Lindbergh Hallgren was born on Feb. 4, 1930. He’s proud of his middle name, which honors the famous pilot who was making headlines at the time. “I was born upstairs,” Charlie said of his current home, noting that a woman across the street helped deliver him, so his father took $5 off her milk and ice bill. “I’m a $5 baby,” he said with a laugh. “It costs a little bit more today.” Not wanting to work for his father, Charlie joined the military after high school and served more than 30 years. His first impression after enlisting was excitement. “It was the first time I had my own bed,” he recalled, noting that he and his brothers slept three to a bed in Mount Joy. “I couldn’t believe it.” Charlie spent 21 months in Korea during the war and 49 months in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, living in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. He had a dangerous job, disarming military weapons. During his service, Charlie earned several medals, including the Airman’s Medal for helping save a pilot whose airplane had slid off a runway, passed underneath a house and gone through a barbedwire fence. After he retired from the mili-
