When she was a student at Manheim Central High School, Rose Kidd took her first mission trip. She visited an orphanage in Mexico, and her love for travel and helping others was born.
Kidd, now 67 and a Mount Joy resident, took a mission trip to Uganda
and Kenya in July and August of this past summer, helping at Gem Village near Kampala and at Jesus Hobbs House of Hope School and Children’s Home near Nairobi. The experience left her with a renewed appreciation for creature comforts, a revitalized love for service and a strong desire to do it all again.
“Everyone should travel to a Third-World country,” Kidd said. “It really puts things in perspective.”
Kidd learned about Gem Village through a friend. “I thought, ‘This is such an amazing place,’” she recalled of the organization that provides a home for disabled and special needs children. “Their vision is inspiring.”
She traveled to the 88-acre village and spent time with the children, who range in age from preschoolers through highschoolers. “I mostly fed the children and played with the kids,” she said. The organization
provides housing, school and opportunities for worship. Plans are in the works to expand the assisted living programming to children who age out of care at age 18 and to bring a doctor to work at the on-site clinic, which will also be open to members of the surrounding community.
Kidd also traveled to Jesus Hobbs House of Hope after learning about the organization through a former pastor at her church, Grace Community Fellowship in Manheim. The organization offers a home to 17 children who have been orphaned or who have been sent to the home by social services. As she did at her first stop, Kidd spent time playing with the children and learning about the organization’s mission.
Although the circumstances surrounding the lives of the residents of both locations may be grim, Kidd emphasized that joy was abundant. “You could tell the children in both places were loved,” she said. “You could tell that they had experienced the love of God.”

The Marietta Community House was created to honor the memory of Lt. Benjamin Hiestand, who died at age 19 during World War I. To highlight that history and recognize other veterans and community members, the organization will hold a program on Sunday, Nov. 13, beginning at 2 p.m. at the house,
264 W. Market St., Marietta. The event will begin in the studio located behind the main building.
“We’ll have a singer who will sing patriotic songs,” said Nancy Kulman, board secretary. “Charles Shireman from American Legion Post 466 will speak about the Hometown Heroes banners around town as well as a mural of veterans that was just completed at the Legion.”

Some of her fondest memories of the trip were teaching the children to play Dutch Blitz, which she brought with her, and helping them fly a kite. When the fabric kite ripped after it got stuck in a tree, Kidd found a sewing kit and repaired it. Soon, she was approached by child after child requesting repairs for various items of clothing.
Kidd wants to return to both organizations, and she was so moved by her experience in Uganda, she’d like to apply for a threemonth internship with Gem Village. She’s ready to go, she said, if she can find someone to care for her cat while she’s away.
Although her background includes years of working with children through the IU 13 and child care facilities, Kidd is quick to point out that anyone can serve those who need it most.
“If you feel called to help, I say go for it,” she stated. “You never know what you’re capable of until you take that first step and do it.”
Kidd is willing to answer questions about the organizations or give presentations to groups. For more information, contact her at mountjoyrose@gmail.com.

building with tables and places to sit. “It seemed to be the perfect spot to hang out on a nice day, read a book or use a little Wi-Fi,” McIlhenney recalled, noting that he thought, “How hard can it be?”
It turned out to be a little more complicated than expected. Turning the front corner just outside the library into the courtyard required dealing with electrical, plumbing and rainwater mitigation issues and other obstacles. Still, McIlhenney was determined. “After I discovered how difficult the project would be, I’d already been talking about it for weeks,” he said. “Folks liked the idea. I’m not one to give up.”
He credits community supportincluding donations at the 2021 benefit auction and volunteers who helped to build furniture - with making the project a reality. “I had the idea, and Rick Trumper from GCM Inc. knew how to make it happen,” McIlhenney stated, noting that Trumper recruited a team that included John Snavely from the mulá group to make the drawings and Rhino Excavating to do the digging. “I am so thankful to them for sharing their expertise, their hard work and support,” McIlhenney said.
Community members have been equally supportive, he shared. “Since the concrete has been finished, I’ve had no fewer than 15 conversations about furniture donation,” he said.

Attendees then may stroll through Koziar’s Christmas Village and enjoy the winter wonderland that was created in 1948, including light displays, train displays, and Santa’s workshop.
There is a cost per person. To register, visit www.getinto gears.org or call 717-367-0355.
McIlhenney encourages anyone with a connection to the library to purchase a brick. “Library Legacy Bricks are a great way of showing your support of the library,” he commented. “Those bricks will be in place for years and years. A Library Legacy Brick would make a great holiday gift for the person who has everything.”
As the courtyard comes together, McIlhenney said he’s excited to continue working on the project. “I’m looking forward to doing a little work in the library courtyard on nice days,” he noted. “If you see me, stop and say hello.”
Order forms for Legacy Bricks are available at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, and at www.mslibrary.org.

The ceremony will include remarks from community members, readings and prayers. Pastor Traci Glover of Zion Lutheran Church in Marietta will offer an invocation and reflection on Veterans Day, and Stewart Carroll will present a Veterans Day reading.
The event will also serve as an opportunity to dedicate new bricks to the Community House’s Buy-A-Brick program. “We had 12 new bricks this year,” said Kulman. “And we have room for more. People can purchase one in honor or in memory of someone, living or deceased. The bricks are for anyone who wants to support the Marietta Community House.”
Kulman noted that she will invite community members to speak about the people who are recognized on both the Hometown Heroes banners and the bricks as part of the ceremony. The event will conclude with refreshments and tours of the property.
The tours will highlight what the community house is all about, said Karen Sullivan, board member. “The Hiestand family gave this house to the people of Marietta,” she remarked. “The house was given to the people, not the town. It’s the people’s house.” She noted that the Marietta Community House is available to rent for bridal showers, weddings or other events.

ARA GRIGORIAN
When the head coach of a team says, “They gave absolutely everything and I couldn’t be more proud,” then it’s obvious that the players came onto the field and gave a tremendous effort.
These were the words of Adam Morris, the Donegal girls’ soccer team head coach. Morris described the way his squad battled against Fleetwood on Monday, October 24, in the first round of the District Three 3A playoffs.
The Indians and the Tigers played to a 1-1 draw through 80 minutes of regulation. Fleetwood (12-5-1) eventually won the game in the penalty shootout 4-1. Donegal (115-3) had entered the districts as the
10th seed, facing seventh-seeded Fleetwood on the road.
“We were tired going into overtime,” Morris said. “The girls all left everything on the field.”
The Tigers went up 1-0 on a goal that came as a result of a defensive lapse by Donegal.
“We started the game slowly and gifted the opening goal,” Morris said. “We didn’t defend the cross well and it floated into the far post netting. It was a very poor goal to concede so early in the game.”
Another indication of this team’s character and effort was how the Indians didn’t allow that early letdown to derail their focus.
“We recovered and the game was evenly contested with chances on both ends,” Morris said. “We
regrouped at halftime. Laken Merchant, who was a constant danger, broke through and headed to the end line to produce a fine cross to Gina Phillips to tie the game.”
The Tigers out-shot the Indians in penalty kicks, however, as they advanced to the quarterfinals.
“Losing on penalty kicks was heartbreaking, but we can be proud of the season we had,” Morris said.
“We made districts when every other team would have written us off early. We were unbeaten through league and section games in regulation time with only Elco beating us in overtime. That’s a great season.”
With Merchant, Phillips and another handful of seniors graduating, Morris looks forward to the returning crew for 2023.
“I’m already looking forward to preparing for next season and working with this year’s group,” he said.
“Obviously, our seniors will be missed, but we have a lot of talent coming through.”
BOYS’ SOCCER
The Donegal boys’ soccer team had its impressive 2022 run come to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Monday, October 24 at Conrad Weiser.
In an overtime playoff match, the Indians (13-6) suffered a 2-1 loss in the first round of the District Three Class 3A playoffs. The Indians had entered districts as the 11th seed, facing the sixth-seeded Scouts (152-2) on the road.

See the trend? Each time in what might have seemed like a demoralizing defeat, Donegal bounced back to post a victory the following week.
in Penalty Shootout
And following a tough 39-14 loss at Cocalico on October 14, the Donegal football team earned a 20-19 comeback win seven days later at home. The Indians (3-6) won this Section Four contest by grinding out a scoring drive in the fourth quarter.
Landen Baughman’s six-yard toss to Noah Roher overcame the Raiders’ rally earlier in the final period.
“The kids showed a lot of poise and grit on the winning drive,” head coach Chad Risberg said. “We made the plays when we had to.”
When faced with insurmountable challenges on that drive, the Indians still came through.
“We were successful on two or three fourth-down conversions on that final drive,” Risberg added.
Earlier in the contest, Ruben Mumper scored on a nine-yard rushing touchdown with Rohrer converting the PAT kick, giving Donegal a 7-0 halftime edge.
Mumper scored on a four-yard rushing touchdown with a Rohrer PAT to make it 14-0 in the third quarter.
Elco scored all three of its touchdowns on big plays by Jake Williams. He dashed to the Donegal endzone from 30 yards out in the third quarter plus a 42-yard and 64yard run in the fourth. He finished with 261 rushing yards.
“We gave up a couple of big runs,” Risberg said. “But our defense played well, especially in the first half.”
Offensively for Donegal, Baughman completed seven passes for 131 yards. Mumper, whose four receptions accounted for 67 of those passing yards, ran for 59 yards on eight carries. Tyler Sload gained 50
yards of real estate on 11 attempts.
“The pass protection was good,” Risberg said. “They blitzed a couple of times and got us. But for the most part, they gave our quarterback enough time to complete passes when we had to. “
Rohrer grabbed two passes for 21 yards and James Turbedsky’s two catches went for a total of 35.

Shirk, who organizes the bazaar each year with fellow church member Karen Baker. “I love the comradery and fellowship of (the holiday bazaar).”
The holiday bazaar is Ironville UMC’s largest yearly fundraiser. The money raised this year will be used for a few different projects that the church is undertaking, such as switching internet providers and purchasing equip-
ment for its new pastor, Jared Stoltzfus. The new provisions will allow Stoltzfus to livestream worship services from Ironville UMC’s website.
“Our goal of setting up the livestream is to continue to be present in the community,” said Stoltzfus. “We want to be connected and help people that are looking for a church to find one.” Stoltzfus became Ironville UMC’s
pastor in July of this year. “It’s been wonderful to get to know the Columbia area and community,” he added. “There’s always a learning curve when you’re transferred to a new church, but I’m
looking forward to meeting more people and engaging the community.”
For more information on the bazaar, contact Ironville UMC at 717-684-8072.
