When Drum Majorettes of America held its Nationals competition in Aiken, S.C., this summer, two Columbia girls took top honors for the second year in a row. Myrah Baker won Little Majorette Princess of America, and Gracelynn “Gracie” O’Dell won Wee Majorette Princess of America. Both girls are students at Paula’s School of B aton in Mount Joy, and both have been twirling batons almost since they could walk. Now 9 years old and a fourth-grader at Our L ady of the Angels School, Myrah began twirling at age 2. That’s the same age Gracie, now 8 years old and a second-grader at Park Elementary School, also took up the baton. Nationals presented an opportunity for both girls to spotlight their talent as twirlers. “I had to do five different routines and modeling,” Myrah said, noting that she had to complete a solo, strut and talent routine. “For my talent routine, I did a hip-hop dance to a Missy Elliott remix, which was really fun,” she said. Gracie compe ted in four events: solo, strut, modeling and show presentation/talent. “I placed first in both my solo and strut,” she said. “For my show presentation, I performed a lyrical routine to ‘Tale as Old as Time’ from ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ Each event is scored, and the results from all four are used to determine the overall winner.” Although they went into the

how to control the baton. I also love twirling with my friends and traveling to different states. I now have friends from different states, too.” Myrah, who is the daughter of Colby Baker and Bryson Nicholson of Columbia, said she hopes to continue twirling through high school and college. “I want to go to college with my best friend Klaire so we can twirl together,” she said. “I practice a lot. Sometimes it’s hard, especially when it’s hot outside. W hen we have competitions, I get to skip school sometimes, but don’t tell my school.” When she’s not twirling, she enjoys cheering her friends on at competitions, and she currently helps to teach a creative movement class for Tiny Tots at Paula’s School of Baton. Beyond twirling , she likes to play Roblox, spend time with her family and play with her friends. “I also like to jump on t h e t ra m p o l i n e a t my nan’s house and eat fruits and vegetables,” she said. Gracie is the daughter o f Jo s h u a a n d C o r i n e O’Dell of Columbia. She also hopes to continue twirling in high school and college. “I recently got to twirl at the high school during a football game, and I had so much fun,” she said. “It made me even more excited to hopefully do that too someday.” In her free time, she loves doing her makeup and skincare routines, playing school, making videos, hanging out with friends and snuggling her squishies. “O ne o f my favo r i te parts of twirling is all of the friends I’ve made and the memories we get to make together,” Gracie said. “I’m really excited that Myrah and I both get to reign as Princesses together again this year! Winning is really exciting, but I also love getting to travel, compete and cheer on my friends, queens and teammates.” Myrah shared that sentiment, adding, “I am excited to be a princess again with Gracie. It ’s fun when you get to reign with friends.”

A White Elephant area at the bazaar will be stocked with gently used and reasonably priced books, puzzles, decorations and home goods, she added. Shoppers will also have the chance to win a “bazaar sampler,” which will be a collection of handmade crafts. Tickets to win will be sold throughout the two-day bazaar, and the winning ticket will be drawn on Sunday, Nov. 8, after the morning worship service. The winner does not need to be present to win. Proceeds from the bazaar will be split between the church’s elevator fund and its Tools4School program, which provides free school supplies to local students. Eshleman said the bazaar has become a tradition that many people in the community look forward to each year. “We started our yearly bazaar in 2007, when it was held for only one day,” she said. “In 2013, we went to a two-day bazaar and haven’t missed a year since.” For more information, visit www.zionmarietta .org or call 717-426-1884.

Veterans from pg 1 finding the right resource can be a challenge for veterans and their families. The information session will g ive attendees an opportunity to learn about services they may not know are available, ask questions about their individual circumstances and connect directly with people who can guide them through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion hopes to make it easier for veterans to identify their needs and find the appropriate next steps. Federal, state and local agencies will attend the program. Participants will include a Veterans Affairs (VA) Service Officer, who will help with VA claims processing; VA Benefits Administration, which will provide information on how to register with t h e VA ; t h e B u i l d i n g Bridges Foundation, which will highlight its equine

therapy program; Sheetz Funeral Home, which will help attendees understand veteran burial benefits; and Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which is focused o n s u p p o r t i n g fe m a l e veterans. The event will be informal and held in the church fellowship hall, enabling attendees to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain resources they seek. “ T h e re w i l l b e l i g h t refreshments available for everyone to enjoy as they build their community of support,” Miller said. Miller hopes attendees will take the first step toward getting the support needed and learning about the resources available to them in the community, noting that sometimes all it takes is one conversation with the right person to open the doors to help. No registration is required to attend the drop-in event. For more information or any questions, contact Miller at ALPOST185SO@gmail.com or 717-808-6444.
