Come Shopping At A Church Bazaar

There is really something for everyone at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church’s bazaar, whether you’re looking for food, homemade crafts or thrift-store treasures, said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer.

The event will be held on Friday,

Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta.

“For food, we are doing soup and barbecue to go again this year like we did last year,” Eshleman noted. The selection of soups will include ham and bean, vegetable beef and chicken corn, along with whatever other types church members choose to make. “We’ll have a variety to choose from,” she remarked. “ We’ll also have hamburger and pork barbecue, and we always have a lot of baked goods, like cookies, candy and snacks. The baked goods are most people’s favorite part of the bazaar. They walk in the door and head straight to them.”

Celebrate Fall

Attend the Creatively Lancaster Artisan Fall Festival, and you can enjoy shopping, f ood, music and more. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, at High Cross Farm, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Girl Crush Company and Second Grace will partner with Creatively Lancaster for the festival, with proceeds benefiting Second Grace, a nonprofit organization that supports at-risk single moms.

“ We currently have more than 70 makers scheduled for display both in our restored vintage barn and outside in the courtyard and yard,” said Candace Abel, chief maker of Girl Crush and president and founder of Second Grace. “We have everything from personal care to home items for sale, body products to soothe, honey for your tea and chocolates for those moments you want to de-stress. We have

An

beautiful photographs, handcrafted signs and candles to make your house homey. There are several jewelry makers, T-shirt makers and potters. We have fiber arts and wood arts.”

Along with vendors, the event will feature food and coffee trucks outside, as well as children’s activities. “Children can play in the children’s area where they can paint and take a fun pumpkin for a small donation to Second Grace,” Abel stated. “We also have a fun tractor ride for the kids to enjoy while the parents shop.” Live music from Sound of Roses will be featured on Oct. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m., and a bonfire will be on-site as well. A selfie station will be set up for visitors to upload a photo to social media and enter to win a gift basket filled with items donated from the vendors.

Abel noted that Creatively Lancaster and Second Grace have collaborated for a number of years, with Girl Crush products sold at Creatively Lancaster’s makers

markets, which are held throughout the county. Girl Crush is a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017. Women in the Second Grace program have the opportunity to work at Girl Crush as part of the program.

“I loved the mission of the organization,” said Steph Mayer, owner of Creatively Lancaster, who noted that the first Artisan Fall Festival was held in 2021 after Abel offered the farm that houses Girl Crush as the venue.

Mayer encourages everyone to attend the Artisan Fall Festival. “If you’re looking to do something fun on a fall weekend, our market has it all, and it goes to support an awesome nonprofit that benefits our community,” she stated. “Plus, it’s never too early to start shopping for the holidays.”

For more information on the Artisan Fall Festival, search for “Creatively Lancaster” on Facebook. For more information on Second Grace, visit https://secondgrace.org.

W hen Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center opened its doors on Oct. 3, it fulfilled a goal of the organization. “Adding Lancaster Medical Center is another step toward delivering on our promise to ensure the communities we serve are within 10 minutes of our primary care providers, 20 minutes of our specialty care and 30 minutes of our acute care,” said Joseph Frank, hospital president,

Throughout the year, church members get together about once a month to make craft items for the bazaar. Items for sale will include a variety of wood crafts such as snowmen, sleds and other Christmas decorations, as well as year-round décor. “Some of ouzr wooden items are made from repurposed wood, See Bazaar pg 3

including pallets,” Eshleman commented, adding that items also include window frame mirrors, a bench, wall sconces and stools. Other craft items that will be featured include crocheted stuffed animals, hats, scarves and an afghan, as well as beaded jewelry, notebooks and ornaments.

A white elephant area of the bazaar will feature a little of everything, Eshleman said. “There’s usually a big section of jigsaw puzzles and books,” she said. “There’s lots of miscellaneous variety and lots of good bargains.”

Half of the proceeds from the

bazaar will go toward the church’s elevator fund, and half will support outreach ministries, including the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, school supplies for local students and programs for local senior citizens.

Eshleman said the bazaar is not just a fundraiser but also a way for the church to connect with the community. “We like to give back, and we like putting on an event that promotes good fellowship,” she shared. “The bazaar also involves everybody in our congregation in some way, from making crafts to making food to helping during the event.”

When the people of Elizabethtown want something, LIV-ETown works hard to make it happen. That’s the case with the Not Too Scary HalloweE-town Parade, happening on Sunday, Oct. 30. The parade will begin assembling at 4 p.m. and will step off at 5:30 p.m.

“We had a lot of people in the community reaching out to us last year about how awesome it would be to have a Halloween parade in Etown,” said Tony Gibble, owner of The Tatted Toy Guys Toy Emporium.

“Growing up in Manheim, I remember there was a costume parade coinciding with the Farm Show made up of businesses and people in the community and (I) had always loved it.” A parade seemed like a perfect project for LIV-ETown, he said, and a new partnership with Jesse Waters, director of community impact at Elizabethtown College, brought LIV-ETown and the college together to get the event up and running for its inaugural year.

The parade will cover a route through town, Waters said, adding, “The best viewing would be along Mount Joy Street from the Fun Fort grass area to College Avenue and from College Avenue to the Hoover parking lot at the college, 701 E. College Ave.”

Clint Gibble, owner of The Candy Unicornium, emphasized that participants are encouraged to come in costume and noted that there will be eight categories of parade entries. “Each one has an award waiting to go to the ‘Best of’ per category,” Clint shared. The categories will be

ages 1 to 5, ages 6 to 10, ages 11 to 14, age 15 and up, couples, organizations/groups, best on wheels (such as wheelchairs, bikes or ATVs) and vehicles/floats. “The judging will be by the Elizabethtown College president, Betty Rider; Scott LaMar of WITF; and Elizabethtown’s mayor, Chuck Mummert,” Clint said.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., 16 groups from Elizabethtown College will offer a Trunk or Treat event at the end of the parade route in the Hoover parking lot, Waters said. “HalloweE-town Parade

guests may also follow the path from Hoover parking to the quad, where 20 businesses will be set up to offer additional trick-or-treating,” he stated.

Along with offering a fun way to celebrate Halloween, the parade and other activities represent a focus on collaboration, Waters said. “This parade is a wonderful way to experience harmony between the Elizabethtown College institution and wonderful community organizations such as

Donegal Football Falls

The Donegal football team came up short against Cocalico in a Section Four gridiron clash on Friday, October 14. The Eagles, led by Sam Steffy and Aaryn Longenecker, topped the Indians 39-14 with Longenecker scoring three rushing touchdowns on a night where he compiled 145 yards on the turf at Donegal High School.

The Indians fell to 2-6 (1-4 league) while the Eagles improved to 4-4 and 3-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

The only Eagles touchdown that came on a big play was Longenecker’s 80-yard punt return in the third quarter, capping the Eagles’ scoring. The Indians blocked that PAT kick attempt.

Donegal did not go down without a fight, however. In the fourth quarter with the running clock in place, the Indians crossed the goal line thanks to a Brock Hammaker 14-yard touchdown. Hammaker also had two pass completions on the night for 19 yards.

Later in the final period, Ruben Mumper broke loose for

a 61-yard dash to the endzone. Noah Rohrer kicked both extra points as Donegal put 14 points on the scoreboard.

“We did not play well,” Indians head coach Chad Risberg said. “There were a lot of missed assignment mistakes.

“They capitalized on our mistakes,” he added. “Ruben had a nice run at the end of the game, making a couple of people miss him as he scored. We have to come back strong at practice and prepare for this week’s battle.”

CROSS COUNTRY

Molly Myers had a strong finish at the L-L League Cross Country Championship race at Ephrata Middle School on Tuesday, October 18. She finished ninth in the girls’ race, posting a time of 20:15.

Kathryn Fernald, who took 19th at 20:28.3, helped Donegal gain an overall eighth-place finish with 199 team points. The Manheim Township girls finished at the top of the team standings with 74 points.

Also helping pace the Indians to their strong finish were Marleigh Ballard (21:24.6) and Addison Houck (21:25.5) who finished 39th and 40th, respectively. Emma Myers posted a time of 24:14.

Bailey Shoaf (24:43.40), Natalie Griner (25:00.4) and freshman Kaylan Shellenberger (26:23.6) rounded out the squad for Donegal.

The Donegal boys finished 15th overall while Hempfield was the overall winner with 37 points.

John Spackman’s 18:34.10 time was tops for the boys’ team. Junior John Hinkle gained 78th place with his 18:44 while Braden Bistline (18:48.10) took 84th place.

Also finishing for the Indians were Cadel Barber (19:00) Dylan Lenhart (19:19.90) Brandon Marcelo (19:37.6) Micah Brydon (19:53.30) and Zachary Karpel (20:05)

Kiwanis Club Will Meet

Norlanco Rheems Kiwanis Club will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Joy’s Tavern, 65 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 6 p.m. Guest speaker Diana Wills, recently named Most Valuable Volunteer of Lancaster’s CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate)

program, will highlight the organization’s work and her experiences.

Attendees will be responsible for paying for their meals. Reservations are requested by Tuesday, Nov. 1, by contacting pateach3@embarq mail.com or oneal1301@comcast.net.

East Region for Penn State Health. The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.

The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its six-story, 341,000-square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department, imaging services and physician offices.”

Unique features at the facility include a “hybrid operating room,”

Frank said, explaining that this stateof-the-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”

While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its team of caregivers, he detailed design features that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment. Departments and units are designed to promote staff collabo-

ration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-the-art café with indoor and outdoor seating provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared. “Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs and the walking trail further promote wellbeing for staff and visitors.”

Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology choices just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded consumer technologies like in-room digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”

Projected population growth was an important factor in choosing the site of the new medical center, he said. “We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along with population growth will come the need for more health care services,” he commented. “This location provides a comfortable and convenient access to Penn State Health care, especially for an aging population. It allows us to anticipate the city’s outgrowth and plan for our community of 10 years from now. And not just in age, but in many other measures of diversity. Understanding the changing face of our community has been a key driver for our decisions from staffing, to care design to locations.”
