The members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church are a crafty bunch, and they’ll share their creativity with the community at the church’s annual Holiday Bazaar. The event will be held at the church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, and Saturday, Nov. 1.
“Our bazaar offers something for everyone,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. “Buy some Christmas gifts and new decorations for your home, have a good lunch and take home a dessert or two!”
Shoppers will find everything they’re looking for at the bazaar, she noted.

If you’re looking for a pawsome way to spend an afternoon, head to Rapho Township Park, 1499 Fieldstone Drive, Mount Joy, for the 10th annual Mutt Strut pet parade, where dogs will take center stage and steal the show. On Sunday, Oct. 26, pups of all shapes
blessings and, of course, sniff out some free treats. It’s all part of Dog Park Mount Joy’s tail-wagging tradition of celebrating community, creativity and canine companionship. Registration for the event will begin at 2 p.m., and the parade will kick off at 2:45 p.m.
“The main event is the costume parade, a photo booth and pet blessings by the Rev. Ellie Hart-Garner,” said Lynn McCleary, president of
“We transform our fellowship hall into a beautiful space for shopping and dining,” she said. “We have an area where you will be tempted by all the yummy baked goods, candy and treats. This is always a busy spot! There is a white elephant area, which features gently used and bargain-priced items such as books, jigsaw puzzles, record albums and home goods.”
Cold food will be available to go from the kitchen, with the choice of soup, including chicken corn, vegetable beef and ham and bean, or barbecue, including hamburger, pulled chicken and pulled pork.
“We also will have a dining area where you can sit and enjoy a hot bowl of soup du jour, meatball or hot dog sandwich or macaroni and cheese for lunch,” Eshleman said.
The rest of the space will be filled with tables of handcrafted

Dog Park Mount Joy (DPMJ). “There will be free doggie treats, courtesy of Waggin Wheels Pet Supply, and lots of dog park merchandise for sale.”
The lighthearted event has produced some very creative costumes in the past, she noted.
“We’ve seen wild and crazy individual entries, as well as entire families dressing up in themes, such as ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ ‘The Jungle Book,’ ‘Harry Potter’ and various cartoons,” she said. “A costume favorite was a UPS truck made of a brown cardboard box on a wagon, with a Shih Tzu driver wearing a UPS visor. The creativity is unlimited!”
Along with having fun, pups will compete for prizes.
“Three prizes will be awarded based simply on ‘costumes that make the judges smile,’” McCleary shared. “Prizes will be such things as dog park mem -
berships, sweatshirts and memorial bricks, plus more.”
The annual pet parade was once held at Veterans Memorial Park. In 2012, McCleary attended the parade holding a poster that asked simply, “Dog Park in Mount Joy?” She collected 150 signatures of people who were interested in having a local dog park.
From that list, she recruited Dr. Carla Douple, DVM, as vice president, along with 20 committee members who were willing to roll up their sleeves and help make it happen. In 2015, with construction underway and several fundraisers completed, the first Mutt Strut took place at Rapho Township Park.
The event is an opportunity to bring the community together and highlight Dog Park Mount Joy, which celebrates its ninth anniversary this year.
“Dogs are treasured family members who
deserve a place to run free and make friends,” McCleary said. “Watching them enjoy life is one of a dog lover’s greatest pleasures, and having a place where they, too, can make friends is what keeps people and pups coming back year after year.”
Dog Park Mount Joy is a 3-acre off-leash dog park, divided into two sections for large and small dogs.
“Membership is required because the park is funded solely through memberships, fundraisers and donations,” McCleary said. “Hours of operation are dawn to dusk, and entry is via a security swipe card.” Registration is on a rolling 12-month basis, with discounts if a family has more than one dog.
The dog park will mark its anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 1, and several events and fundraisers will be held throughout the coming year as the park approaches its 10th year in operation.
“DPMJ will host a humans-only potluck dinner on Nov. 15 at the Orchards Clubhouse, and several upcoming fundraisers are on tap toward park upgrades,” McCleary said. More information can be found on the Dog Park Mount Joy Facebook page. Participation in the Mutt Strut is free, but donations are always welcome and will be applied toward the rental of the pavilion and prizes. No advance registration is required.
For more information on the dog park, visit www .dogparkmountjoy.com.
“Members travel from towns nearby and far away and often develop lifelong friendships that grow beyond the park,” she remarked. “Many of the original committee people and several others are integral to keeping DPMJ the beautiful, safe space that it is for the community’s beloved pups.”

Come out in costume for some spooky fun when Bainbridge hosts its annual Halloween parade. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25. Registration will run from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m., and the parade will step off at 5:30 p.m. Registration will take place at Bainbridge Elementary School, 416 N. Second St.
The parade will travel south on Second Street, progress to Overlook Drive and end at the Bainbridge Fire Company.
Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, including scariest, best dressed and most original, with divisions for individuals, couples and groups of three or more. Awards will also be presented for youth groups, commercial displays and best pet.
“We also have the traveling trophy for the float category,” said Gina Mariani, who is helping to organize the parade. “They get judged on audio/visual, originality and theme when they are

Prizes reflect the fun and camaraderie of the event, she said.
“We give out the floating trophy for first place, toilet trophy for second, donkey butt for third,” she said. “We also give cash prizes to all winners first through third in all categories.”
Following the parade, the celebration will con -
tinue at the Bainbridge Fire Company, 34 S. Second St.
“There will be food trucks set up from brisket, ribs, pork, Chuckwagon Grill burgers, chicken, fries, Rita’s Ice, Funcky Candy X-Press and Notorious P.I.G.,” Mariani noted.
“We also have a band, The Kracker Beez. They play a variety of music.”
The parade is organized by the Conoy Parks and Recreation Department. It will be held rain or shine, including in light drizzle,
unless there is a storm.
Mariani hopes anyone who is interested in participating in the parade or just watching along the route will come out for some holiday festivities.
“We have a great community of people, and we welcome all kinds of fun and competition in our parade,” she said. “It’s just a great hometown fun night.”
For questions or more information on the parade, contact Mariani at 717-278-8484.
items that are made throughout the year by church members.
“There is beaded jewelry, crocheted items ranging from an afghan to dishcloths to cute stuffed animals,” she remarked.
“We have Christmas ornaments, wreaths, floral arrangements and décor. There are many fall decorations to choose from also. A lot of our crafts are made from wood and inspired by things seen on Pinterest. Every year we try to come up with new ideas.”
A variety of paperthemed gifts will also be for sale, including gift bags, gift tags, gift card holders, sticky note pads and notebooks. This year, organizers will also sell tickets for a chance to win
a Bazaar Sampler Bundle, which will include a variety of homemade crafts.
Holding the bazaar is an annual tradition at Zion Lutheran, Eshleman said, and it serves several purposes.
“We use the proceeds from the bazaar to help fund special projects in our church and our outreach ministries,” she explained. This year the proceeds will be split between Zion’s elevator fund and Tools 4 School, a school supply giveaway.
“(The bazaar) is an opportunity to engage with our local community,” Eshleman continued. “And even though it requires many hands helping and many hours of planning and work, we have fun and enjoy the fellowship with our church family and friends. I love

What happens when some of the best high school bands in the region get together to perform? An event that’s full of fun and excitement, said Keara Dagen, co-chair of the Baron Invitational.
Risa C. Paskoff, Aaron’s Acres
Over the years, Aaron’s Acres has been most fortunate in having such excellent coverage of our organization, its programs and activities by EPC. Their staff is always ready and willing to write a story about us.”
“This event is high-energy! It is amazing to witness the hard work of multiple high school marching bands come to fruition on the field,” she said. “These schools have all been working on their shows since before school started and put many hours into perfecting not only the music, but an award-winning show.”
The Baron Invitational will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Manheim Central High School’s Rettew Stadium, 400 Adele Ave., Manheim. Gates are tentatively scheduled to open at 3 p.m. The exact time will be finalized closer to the event.
School, Eastern York High School, Red Lion Area High School, South Western High School and Warwick High School. Exhibition bands are from Manheim Central High School and Millersville University.
“Last year, there were 12 bands performing - 10 bands competing, plus Manheim Central and Millersville University as exhibition performers,” Dagen shared. “We are thrilled that this year we have so many more!”
purchase at the event and will include hot dogs, walking tacos, soups, french fries and baked goods.
Risa C. Paskoff, Aaron’s Acres
Eighteen bands will compete in the event, with an additional two performing exhibition shows. Competing bands are from Jersey Shore Area High School, Middletown Area High School, Shamokin Area High School, York Catholic High School, Donegal High School, Big Spring High School, Conestoga Valley High School, Garden Spot High School, Littlestown High School, Twin Valley High School, Conrad Weiser High School, Greencastle-Antrim High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Cedar Crest High
The event is part of the Cavalcade of Bands competition, which features performances at local football stadiums on weekends from September through early November. Bands receive verbal judged commentary and numeric scores as each school has the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds of spectators. The competition groups bands by division, based on the total number of members.
“Competing with other bands is fun, but most bands get satisfaction out of improving their own scores as the season goes on,” Dagen explained.
“Since Manheim Central is hosting, they will not be competing. We are excited to host Millersville University’s marching band as an exhibition performance again this year, too! We are looking forward to watching a college-level band perform, as our normal week-to-week experience is with other high schools.”
Food will be available to
Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy, will host its annual Veterans Day program on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
A 9 a.m. continental breakfast reception will precede the ceremony, which will begin promptly at 10 a.m. in the auditorium.
Following program tradition, students and guests will learn about the history of Veterans Day, listen to “In Flanders Fields” performed by the DHS chorus, pay tribute to Donegal High School alumni who are veterans and witness a roll call of veterans in attendance.
This year’s program will feature presentations from students who traveled to
Europe this past summer on a World War II and Western Front educational tour. They will share their perspectives and reflections on why it is important to honor America’s veterans. The student winner of the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy essay competition will deliver remarks addressing the question, “How are you showing patriotism and support for our country?”
The program will conclude with the playing of taps.
Area residents who are veterans, along with their spouses, may make reservations by contacting the school at 717-653-1871 by Wednesday, Nov. 5.
This is the 24th year Manheim Central has hosted the event, and it provides a chance for the bands to hone their skills while also having fun, Dagen said.
“Band members are always looking to grow their individual skills and improve their group performance,” she remarked.
“Plus, after each band is done performing, they get to watch the other bands perform. There is great camaraderie and support for each other in the marching band community.”
The invitational is a fundraiser for the Marching Barons, who will perform their show based on the theme “Cirque Diabolique.”
“It’s a slightly dark take on the circus,” Dagen said. “The show features different aspects of the circus - arriving on a train, performing under the big top, etc. - but also aims to demonstrate the unsettling feeling of something lurking beneath the surface.”
Under the direction of
John Brackbill, the band includes high school students as well as “Super Freshmen,” or eighth-graders who are invited to join the band.
There is an admission charge for the invitational, with separate prices for adults and for students. Proceeds from the event are used by the band booster club to support band programming.
“Some of the financial assistance offered to the marching band through the boosters includes uniforms, music scores, sound equipment, instrument maintenance and support for trips,” Dagen noted, adding that the booster club will also accept donations at www.mcmarching barons.org.
Dagen invites everyone out to the invitational for an entertaining event.
“You will walk away entertained and filled with awe for these young musicians and their directors,” she said. “As a bonus, you will be supporting the Manheim Central marching band’s school-year programming.”
The City of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season. Property owners with a healthy conifer at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides who plan to remove the tree are encouraged to contact the city.
Interested property owners should reach out to city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer @cityoflancasterpa.gov and include a name, address,
phone number, the tree’s location, and a photo. A jury of city staff and LEADS board members will select the tree. The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for the contribution in a press release and the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.
The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting in November.
