For author E .R . Scr ivener, publishing her first book was an exercise in both creativity and adaptability. “The final product is very different from the story I set out to tell,” said the Mount Joy writer. “I am obsessed with ‘The Great British Bake Off,’ and I wanted to tell a baking competition story with magic somehow mixed in. And I’ve watched ‘Julie & Julia’ so many times, I wanted a new
story about French cuisine.” The result is “The Untold Bakes of Addlewood,” which came out on Sept. 1. “The novel tells the story of Nonnette, who comes to Victorian England with the dream of opening the most renowned patisserie in the world,” Scrivener shared. “With a magical healing truffle and her grandmother ’s ladle, Nonnette awakens an enchanted forest where she hides herself away, practicing her bakes.” Nonnette has a special connection

Farmers are the backbone of our country and Lancaster County. The Mount Joy Rotary Club wants to recognize and honor their work. The club will host a Farmers’ Luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at noon. It will be held at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. This year’s event will feature a special guest of honor, Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding. “Mike Melhor n from our club reached out to Secretary Redding’s office about Farmers’ Day,” shared Rotary Club president Greg Sallade, who added that this date worked best with Redding’s schedule. “National Farmers’ Day is actually on Oct. 12.” The event will feature a lunch of a salad, an entrée, a drink and desserts, along with remarks from club members, who will provide brief updates on the Rotary’s work. “The majority of time, Secretary Redding will speak,” Sallade said. Redding has served as the state’s Secretary of Agriculture under three governors, beginning in 2009. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agriculture education and agriculture and extension education, respectively, from Penn State. He owns and operates a farm in the Gettysburg area with his wife, Nina. Sallade invites farmers in the See Farmers pg 8

to the forest, which helps her grow stronger as a baker, she said, adding, “But as Nonnette makes her plans to open her patisserie, Addlewood might just have a few plans of its own.” Scrivener said the book is a story about someone who doesn’t fit the mold. “I also wanted to write a story about someone who felt like she was ‘on the outside’ of life, someone who didn’t quite fit in, but finds somewhere to belong in Addlewood,” she said. “We all need somewhere to belong, even if it’s just with a few people, and that fellowship can make all the difference.” Scrivener began writing the first draft of the book in September of 2024, but she had been thinking about the story and had written a few baking competition chapters some time before that. “One of the characters in ‘Addlewood,’ E lenor Root, was the protago-

All writing helps a writer learn the craft, and sometimes, prewr iting helps our heart figure out the story we are actually trying to tell.” Scrivener said she had a lot of fun writing her book. “ I t wa s b a sic a l l y me pouring my heart out on the page - all my passion for histor y, baking and other cultures - and was just the best time,” she said. “I loved researching food histor y with ‘ T he City Tavern Cookbook’ by Walter Staib. He taught me which seasonal and regional ingredients were available to historical cooks and how they had to think differently about food preparation and storage. Then, Paul H o l l y w o o d ’s ‘ B r i t i s h Baking’ made me feel like
I was hunkered down in a cozy British cottage, surrounded by delicious bakes.” She also discovered an unintended outcome of the book. “ This stor y is not an allegor y, meaning I did not set out with this intent ion, b u t w hen I finished writing, I found that certain aspects of the forest had come to represent parts of my relationship with Jesus Christ,” she said. “So that was fun and surprising to discover for myself!” While she enjoyed writing the book, it also presented a few challenges, she said, including the ending. “ The climax was difficult to write. When you read it, you’ll understand why,” she teased. “But perhaps the most challenging part was writing a protagonist of Romani heritage. I am not Romani, and I wanted to make sure that I was representing their

School Posts Veterans Day Event Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy, will host its annual Veterans Day program on Wednesday, Nov. 11. A 9 a.m. continental breakfast reception will precede the ceremony, which will begin at 10 a.m. in the auditorium. Following program tradition, students and guests will learn about the history of Veterans Day, listen to “In Flanders Fields” performed by the DHS chorus, pay tribute to Donegal High School alumni who are veterans, and witness a roll call of veterans in attendance. This year’s program will feature a continuation of the Profiles of Pennsylvania Patriots presentations
GEARS and the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the completion of renovations on the second floor of the former Poplar Street School building. During the event, guests had the opportunity to explore the updated space. GEARS has been using other areas of the building for many years, and the newly completed renovation project fulfilled a vision more than 30 years in the making. The second-floor expansion will be used for public recreation opportunities, including fitness classes, dance and gymnastics, adult enrichment programs, and expanded child care services. The area will include five classrooms totaling about 4,500 square feet of program space, as well as a customer lounge, restrooms, and storage space. Ceili Band Causes Feet to Move BY JEFF FALK
Mu sic is a s er ies o f sounds, notes, beats and rhy thms arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “ T he music uses ornamentation and rhythms that are very distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians lear ning Celtic music , especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also

supports the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. After all, what’s dancing without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds to g e t h e r to l e a r n a nd enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get exper ience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from L ancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, f lutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of ages and abilities,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania
Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Mar yland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King , “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.” The Ceili Band was formed about five years a go, a ro u nd t he s a me time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”
