WhenMaria Enriquez considers a show to direct, she asks herself the same question: Why this show now? The director of “Agnes of God,” which will be performed at Susquehanna Stage later this month, said she f ound the play to be as relevant today as it was when it was written more than 40 years ago.
“This is a show that prompts the audience to ask questions about faith versus reason,” Enriquez stated. “These are questions like, ‘Is there a God? Do I believe?’ These questions are relevant today. As a society, we’re seeing a loss of faith, a loss of organized religion. This show gives audiences the opportunity to examine the driving forces behind that.”
“Agnes of God” is a threewoman show. The cast features Lydia Alkinburgh as Agnes; Susan Kresge as Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior; and Nelly Torres as Dr. Martha Livingstone. It tells
the story of Agnes, a young nun, who has given birth but claims it was an immaculate conception. “Dr. Livingstone is a psychiatrist trying to get to the bottom of this mystery,” said Enriquez.
Alkinburgh described her character as innocent and sheltered.
“She’s very young - just 21 - and she’s very child-like,” she noted. “She doesn’t know much about the world.”
Kresge said her character is torn between wanting to know the truth of what happened and struggling with that truth. She’s also a lonely person. “She has some emptiness in her life, and Agnes fills some of those holes,” Kresge noted.
As a doctor, Torres’ character struggles with her faith. “She relies on logic,” Torres stated. “In her mind, everything can be explained by reason. … She has walls up and tries to mask her vulnerability and her own struggle with faith.”
For this show, Enriquez cast two understudiesNatalie Beckman for Dr. Livingstone and Tac Tacelosky f or Miriam Ruth. Tacelosky will perform the role at the matinee performance on Sunday, Oct. 23.
Enriquez explained that using understudies was not only a necessity in the age of COVID uncertainty but also a deliberate choice. “This show offers these really plum roles for actresses, so I wanted to bring in even more women to the production,” she said.
Rotary Event To Fight Polio

Raise a glass at a Mount Joy pub, and you can help fight polio. The Rotary Club of Mount Joy will host its annual Pints for Polio fundraiser at Joy’s Tavern, 62 W. Main St., on Tuesday, Oct. 25, and at Twisted Bine Beer Co., 93 E. Main St., on Wednesday, Oct. 26. The event will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at each location.
As Rotarian Rose Madar explained, both establishments will donate a portion of beer sales to the cause to fight polio. Each location will also feature six giveaway baskets, with themes including pets, coffee, car care and wine. Proceeds from ticket sales for the baskets will also benefit the cause. “Both places have trivia going on those nights as well,” she said. “So, you can come out, have a beer, play trivia and support a great cause.”

The 75th annual Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, with a theme of “Back to the ’90s.” Parade participants and spectators are encouraged to wear costumes based on the theme.
“This year’s parade is shaping up to be one of the biggest in recent years,” said John Grunden, treasurer of the Columbia Lions Club. “We already have 10 more units registered than we did last year. It’s a great way for people to come together for an evening of fun with family and friends.”
The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and the Sunsnappers, a men’s service organization. It will form at 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along a 1.5mile route that includes sections of Manor, South Fourth, Union, South Second, Locust and South Sixth streets.
The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will also include high school marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, Scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, businesses and a steam calliope as the final entry. The Marine Corps
League of Lancaster County will collect toys and donations for the Toys for Tots program along the route, and people are invited to bring a toy to donate to this project.
Grunden noted that cash
prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories and that the judges will roam the parade route to observe entries throughout the parade rather than only

“Jetty is someone who is always looking for ways to make life a little easier for friends, loved ones and anyone she meets,” said Paul Resch, president of the Columbia Lions Club. “She enjoys meeting new people, getting to know them personally and helping in any way she can. On any given day, you’ll find her giving rides to friends who have appointments or picking up anyone who needs a ride to church.”
A lifelong Columbia resident, Jetty has volunteered with numerous organizations, including Meals on W heels, the former Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and St. James Lutheran Church, where she has served on the church council, as a member of the choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She has also volunteered with the Thunder on the River car show for many years. Jetty was married to the late Fred “Itz” Gerfin for 37 years. questions and people wanting to hash things out,” she said.
“Agnes of God” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 21 and 28; Saturdays, Oct. 22 and 29; and Thursday, Oct. 27. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 23 and 30. Speaking Up At Toastmasters
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For one hour twice a month, the members of the Elizabethtown Toastmasters promote personal and professional development, share information, learn new things - and have a lot of fun doing it all.
The club formed in September of 2019, and it’s open to anyone. “I think we are Etown’s best-kept secret,” said David Pelna, vice president of membership.
Elizabethtown Toastmas-
ters is a chapter of Toastmasters International, a nonprofit educational organization that aims to help members improve communication and build leadership skills. Founded in 1924, Toastmasters International includes more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries.
“This is a club for anybody who wants to improve their speaking and communication skills,” explained club president Matt Blazi. “It’s also a great opportunity for net-
working. We have people in our group of all ages, different experiences, different backgrounds.”
Each Toastmasters meeting f ollows the same format. A club member serves as Toastmaster for the evening and acts as a sort of master of ceremonies. At a recent meeting, club member Kevin Schafer filled this role, introducing the schedule for the evening as well as the two speakers who gave prepared speeches on topics of their choice.
Blazi spoke on “The Lighthouses of Cape Cod,” following a curriculum prompt that required him to tackle a speech while managing a difficult audience. Jeff Boyle delivered a prepared speech about 988, a new nationwide mental health hotline.
Other roles filled by club members included evaluators, who scored the prepared speeches; an “ah” counter, who checked for filler words or speech stumbles; a grammarian, who checked for proper grammar and introduced a word of the day; and a timer, who made sure speakers stuck to prearranged speech lengths.
After the prepared speeches, club members were invited to give an impromptu speech on a variety of Table Topics. The theme for impromptu speech-
es at a recent meeting was autumn, and topics included prompts such as “What’s the ideal temperature?” and “Sell me a pumpkin.”
Blazi explained that evaluating the speakers helps club members hone their publicspeaking skills. “It’s a time to learn, get feedback, grow, take notes and work to improve,” he remarked. Club members also vote on the best prepared speech and best impromptu speech of the evening.
Pelna said he joined the club to overcome the challenge of speaking in front of groups of people, something he often has to do in his job. “I wanted to improve at work, but I also found it’s a skill I can apply to so many situations outside of work as well,” he said.
Blazi encourages anyone with an interest to visit the Toastmasters website or just come to a meeting. “Toastmasters has helped me become a better communicator,” he said, “and I can use that in so many aspects of my life.”
The Elizabethtown Toastmasters meets at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. W ashington St., Elizabethtown, on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.toast masters.org or come to a meeting.

“The program is designed for kids ages 8 to 18 of varying levels of experience,” stated instructor Tom Amlie. “The expectation is that most of the shooters will be first-time participants. The program is meant to teach basic marksmanship skills in a safe environment.” Participants will begin shooting from sandbags in order to learn the basics of safe rifle operation, sight alignment and trigger control, he said, adding, “After that, we’ll move on to shooting using a sling, although smaller shooters might continue to shoot off sandbags for the entire season.”
An “air gun” is any gun where the projectile is propelled by compressed air, whether provided by a spring, an internal pump or a removable compressed air tank, Amlie explained, noting, “They can be anything from the Daisy Red Ryder to Olympic-quality rifles costing
thousands of dollars.” The club provides air rifles for use, or shooters may bring their own as long as the gun has iron sights, meaning no scope or red-dot sight. “The club air rifles are designed for target shooting and are more appropriate than what most young people might already have,” he commented.
Amlie said that air rifles provide a good introduction to safe firearms handling. “Air rifles - with their minimal noise and recoil - provide a very low-stress introduction for even the smallest shooters,” he stated. “The club also offers a junior .22 rifle program in the spring for ages 12 and up, so the air rifle program is a great introduction for kids who might want to participate in that program.”
He said the Junior Air Rifle program also offers a way for participants to potentially develop an interest in a lifelong sport. “Marksmanship is
one of the few sports where age, within reason, and gender are largely irrelevant,” Amlie shared. “Although international competitions are segregated by gender, in U.S. competitions, men and women compete side-by-side, and in the rifle disciplines, women are just as likely to be the national champions, whether in air rifle, .22 rifle or high-power rifle.”
Amlie pointed out that the sport also offers a unique way to view competition. “One of the nicest things about the

Lady Booters Bounce Back, Top Middletown
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Entering their Section Three girls’ soccer match with Elco on Thursday, October 6, the Donegal Indians had scored 40 goals in 15 matches. Somehow, the Raiders managed to cool down the dominant offense in a 1-0 overtime win at Donegal.
Emily Miller scored one minute into the extra period, giving the Raiders a win. Hailey Sideman had compiled 11 saves in an outstanding effort in goal for Donegal.
“The Elco game was very disappointing. We found it very difficult to get going,” head coach
Adam Morris said. “We were very slow and didn’t hit our usual high energy limits. We could not find any rhythm with many of our passes not hitting their marks.”
The Indians bounced back in their next two outings. After a 20 victory at home on Saturday over non-league opponent Middletown, the Indians won an overtime game of their own at McCaskey on Monday, October 10. The win improved Donegal’s league record to 6-1-3 (11-3-3 overall). They trail Elco (7-1-2) by only two points in the section standings.
“We bounced back against Middletown Saturday,” Morris
said. “We played with more intensity.
“Gina Phillips and Sophia Floyd both found the back of the net for a good team win.”
In the McCaskey match, the Red Tornado came back from a 20 deficit to tie it in the 58th minute on Annie Starliper’s goal.
Floyd scored both Donegal goals in regulation. Sophia Watson scored the game winner 16 minutes into extra time. Sideman finished with five saves.
FIELD HOCKEY
In a battle between LancasterLebanon League field hockey rivals at Donegal, the visiting Ephrata Mountaineers won a close 2-0 decision on Thursday, October 6.
“It was another close finish for our team,” said head coach Gina Allessie.
Anna Commero and Marie McCracken helped the Mountaineers make the most of their five shots on goal. The Indians matched the Mounts in shots on goal with five.
“We need to focus on capitalizing on opportunities inside the attacking circle,” Allessie said. “This is something we’re consistently working on because we’ve had chances in each game but just need to finish. Being able to finish has been the theme all season.”
The Indians poured on the offense in their next match - an evening L-L League Monday match. Donegal improved to 6-90 (4-5-0 league) with a 3-1 victory at home over Cedar Crest.
Senior Makayla Ober, who also had an assist, junior Sarah Gainer and sophomore Ruth Myers, each scored in the win while goalie Ella Miller held off the Falcons.
“We are very proud of the improvements each week,” Allessie said. “Overall, the team has worked hard and has solid fundamental skills.”
FOOTBALL
Donegal’s football team needed to get on track in the second half of its L-L League game at Conrad Weiser on Friday, October 7.
The Scouts had limited the Indians’ rushing attack, but thanks to a solid effort by Donegal’s defense, the game between these Section Four foes was at a one-point difference at intermission, 7-6 Donegal.
“We made some key adjustments at halftime,” head coach Chad Risberg explained. “We were able to run the ball well using those adjustments. So, a shout out to our offensive line.”
The Indians put up a pair of third-quarter scores en route to a 28-12 victory, improving to 2-5 on the year (1-3 league). Noah Rohrer, who finished with 152 yards on 27 rushing attempts, scored his second touchdown of the game - a six-yarder to open the second half scoring. Zeke Amaro scored on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Landen Baughman.
“We were able to score on a touchdown pass off of play action because of those adjustments,” Risberg added.
Sandwiched between these Donegal TD’s was Trey Dianna’s 29-yard rushing TD for Weiser.
In the fourth quarter Tyler Sload (4 carries, 63 yards) broke free for a 33-yard scamper to the endzone. Rohrer added his third PAT kick of the night to cap the scoring.
As far as the defense doing its part and keeping the Scouts (2-2
league) in check, Risberg remarked, “They [Weiser] did not have a first down in the fourth quarter. The defense played really well in the second half.”
When asked about the team bouncing back from a 41-7 loss to Twin Valley the previous week, Risberg replied, “It was great to see the kids bounce back this week and get the win. They all worked hard and it says a lot about their character.”Every kid on the team practiced hard all week,” continued the coach. “The coaching staff did a great job preparing the kids.”
CROSS COUNTRY
In a Section Two cross country race that had been postponed from the previous week’s consecutive days of downpours, the Donegal, Garden Spot and Lampeter-Strasburg boys’ and girls’ squads competed at Garden Spot on Tuesday, October 11.
In the girls’ race, Donegal outran Lampeter-Strasburg by a 19-36 count and Garden Spot by a margin of 16-47, improving to 5-2 on the year. In the boys’ race, the Indians (4-3) fell to L-S by a 20-35 margin while the Spartans edged the Indians 29-30.
The Pioneers captured the top four spots in the boys’ race, Donegal’s Zachary Karpel led his team with an eighth-place finish, registering 19:11 as his time. Micah Brydon was right behind him at 19:12.
Taking 10th and 11th, respectively, were Braden Bistline (19:17) and John Hinkle (19:25) with Dylan Lenhart (19:37) taking 13th place.
In the girls’ race, Molly Myers led a quartet of Donegal runners
at the top of the pack. Her firstplace time of 21:02 was followed by Kathryn Fernald (21:09) Marleigh Ballard (21:44) and Addison Houck (21:49).
Also solidifying Donegal’s team finish were Emma Myers (10th, 25:21), Natalie Greiner (11th, 26:03), Baily Shoaf (12th, 26:14) and freshman Kaylan Shellenberger (14th, 26:17).
BOYS’ SOCCER
The Donegal boys’ soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a dominant victory over Solanco and a 1-0 shutout of nonleague opponent South Western.
These wins and the 1-0 setback to Elco on Thursday, October 6, put the Indians at 13-5-0 on the year, 6-4-0 in league play.
On Monday, senior striker Tye White scored four times and added an assist in the 6-1 defeat of Solanco.
Andrew Myers scored the team’s first goal. LD Hanes had one goal and two assists.
Senior goalie Keagan Cote had two saves in this win. In shutting out South Western, he had three saves. Hanes scored off a Myers assist in the 22nd minute. The Indians finished 9-1-0 at home for the regular season.
TENNIS
At the L-L League Girls’ Tennis Championships in Conestoga Valley, Corrine Watson and Kensington Edmond lost a tough doubles match to Ephrata’s Ava Howard and Elise Johnson 2-6, 6-4, 8-10.
At Flight Two doubles, Emily Frownfelter and Janelle Kingsboro came up short in a 9-7 final.
Watson also came up short at Flight Three singles to CV’s Sydney Harris, 2-6, 5-7 while Frownfelter lost 3-6, 3-6 at Flight Four to Maddy Kase of Cedar Crest.

Church To Host Chuck Wagon Gang
The Chuck Wagon Gang will present a concert at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, on Friday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m. There is a set admission fee.
The group formed in 1935, featuring farmer D.P. Carter along with his son, Ernest, and daughters, Lola and Effie. It began as a way to spread the Word while also raising money for medicine for Effie, who had pneumonia. The group began singing on local radio in Lubbock, Texas, that year. As it grew in popularity, the Chuck Wagon Gang started recording for the American Record Corporation in 1936 before the group’s contract and master recordings were purchased by Columbia Records.
Over the years, the band has sold millions of records and songbooks and has experi-
enced numerous personnel changes while retaining ties to the original quartet. Current owner, manager, and alto singer Shaye Smith is the granddaughter of original alto Anna “Effie” Carter and of Howard Gordon, who played electric and acoustic guitar for
the Chuck Wagon Gang in the 1950s and ’60s. The quartet still performs with accompaniment from only one guitar, now played by Darrell Morris.
In addition to Smith and Morris, the current lineup includes Melissa Kemper, Josh Garner, and Scotty Owenby.

Rotary
Pints for Polio is a Rotary International program created through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Rotary has been working with GPEI for more than 35 years, and Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from the disease.
“Thanks to the efforts of Rotary International, we have almost fully eradicated polio,” Madar noted. However, the disease is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and cases have been found recently in the United States.
The Rotary Club of Mount Joy has been participating in Pints for Polio for a number of years at various establishments throughout the town. It’s just one way the club fulfills its mission, Madar noted. “Our whole goal is service above self,” she said.
The club takes an active role in the Mount Joy community, with projects including installation of the clock on Main Street and improvements at Rotary Park. “We support local Boy Scouts, and we support REYS youth center,” said member Ron Carper. “We also sponsor a Student of the Month at Donegal High School.” Carper noted that the Mount Joy chapter has been active since the 1920s.
The club currently has 50 members, and the group is always looking for new people to join, Madar said. “We are open to anybody who wants to serve their community,” she stated. The club meets over lunchtime at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St.,
purchase and giveaway drawings. Attendees may meet volunteer staff members and learn more about Hope’s Haven.
This event is free. There is no rain date; search for “Hope’s Haven Rescue and Youth Camp” on Facebook for cancellation information. For additional information about Hope’s Haven, visit www.hopeshaven4life.org.
