How brave are you? Find out by visiting Haunted Marietta. The spooky attraction will be held at Union Meeting House,82 N. Waterford Ave., Marietta, on Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22 and will feature a walk-through haunted house. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. on both evenings. From 6 to 7 p.m., the attraction will be presented in a less-

scary format for younger children and anyone who might easily be frightened. A scarier version will operate from 7 to 9 p.m. each night.

Haunted Marietta is free, but donations will be accepted to support Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA). As MRA volunteer Rebecca Carroll Baltozer explained, a Marietta resident named Willis Boyles created a Halloween attraction in his backyard for many years,

Walkin the doors of the fall yard and vendor sale at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, and you never know what you might find.

“I like to tell people at the door, ‘Go in and find your treasure,’” said Chrisie Emswiler, event chair. “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure.”

The church will hold the sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items will be for sale both inside and outside the church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St.

We really have a little bit of everything for sale,” Emswiler noted. “We sell everything but

clothing.” Items include household goods, toys, glassware, seasonal décor, linens, shoes, scarves, books and jewelry. “We have a dining room table and chairs for sale,” Emswiler said, adding that all items are priced to sell. Tickets will be sold for two basket giveaways as well - one featuring fall and Thanksgiving items and one featuring Christmas items.

The church has been holding the yard sale annually for more than a decade, although the pandemic put a pause on the event. This will be the first time it’s been held since 2019.

The sale will also feature free coffee and doughnuts for shoppers, and the Egg Roll Lady will operate a stand outside the church from

8:30 a.m. to noon. A variety of baked goods prepared by church members will be for sale as well.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the mission and outreach ministries of the church, Emswiler said, noting that the church supports Friends of Donegal, among other organizations.

Items for the yard sale are donated by church and community members, and donations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 14. To make a donation, contact Emswiler at 717-468-6601.

Emswiler remarked that the yard sale is just one way the church works to impact the community.

“ We’re a small church, but we have a big heart for others,” she said.

W hen Adriana Witman, schoolage program administrator with Steps to Success, a Christian preschool and day care service, saw how well the organization’s 2021 Trunk or Treat went, she was happy to plan another. “It was very successful and exciting,” reported Witman.

As a result, the second Steps to Success Trunk or Treat will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. This year, the event will be open to the Conestoga Valley community and the Donegal community, where Steps recently opened a location in the Donegal Primary School. The event will feature a number of decorated trunks offering free candy.

Food items at the event will include free hot dogs provided by Zion Lutheran Church and s’mores. Members of local Boy Scout troops 82 and 83 will tend the fire pits for roasting marshmallows.

Families from both Conestoga Valley and Donegal have been invited to decorate trunks for the event. Trunk themes will include Scooby-Doo and Harry Potter. Organizers believe they can fit up to 40 cars in the ample lot behind the church. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in costume for the event.

Witman noted that Steps serves a total of 150 families and 200 children in all its programs.

More information on the program may be found by searching for “Steps to Success Christian Early Learning Centers” on Facebook. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by calling 717-656-3363 or emailing adrianawitman.steps@gmail.com.

inviting the community to attend free of charge. “It was a really neat event,” she stated. “I went to him about collaborating on making it even bigger.” Relocating Haunted Marietta to the Union Meeting House also meant the event could take place no matter the weather.

Boyles and his family will be onsite for Haunted Marietta, and Boyles does all the design and creativity for the haunted house, Baltozer said. New features are added regularly, including a “swamp room” this year.

This year, MRA decided to expand Haunted Marietta beyond what the event has traditionally featured. “We’re adding food trucks and haunted ‘spooky’ vendors that will be in the field adjacent to the house,” Baltozer remarked. “They’ll have Halloween merchandise and other fun things to buy.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit MRA and the organization’s mission to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Marietta. Among the group’s ongoing projects are restoration and upkeep of the Union Meeting House and the Old Town Hall building on Walnut Street, which houses the Marietta Museum.

Baltozer encourages everyone to come out for Haunted Marietta, noting that the event has received positive feedback over the years. “Don’t let the fact that it’s free fool you,” she said. “I’ve heard lots of people say it’s a quality haunted house.”

Family Fun At GEARS Fall Festival

“As a nonprofit, GEARS appreciates all the great things the community does for us,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator. “We love doing big activities for everyone as a way of saying thank you to the community for supporting us all year.”

GEARS will host the 12th annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. The Fall Festival will have something for people of all ages, Eckert noted. “Our barrel train is back this year, and that’s always popular with kids,” he stated. “New this year, our

senior center will be running bingo out of ag hall. We’re really looking forward to that.”

GEARS will again partner with members of Elizabethtown Area Middle School’s Student Council, who will offer a variety of free yard games. Elizabethtown College students will provide several free activities, including Halloween bookmarks, leaf crafts and sand art bracelets. Members of the Elizabethtown College wrestling team will operate a haunted barn from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “That’s for all ages, so they’ll change the experience depending on if a little kid is going through or a high-schooler is going

through,” Eckert said.

A variety of inflatables will be onsite, including a slide, a bounce house and a basketball hoop. “This year, we’re having an inflatable obstacle course as well,” Eckert remarked. Wristbands may be purchased for allday access to the inflatables and will include the opportunity to paint a pumpkin. Additional activities will include balloon art from The Balunguy from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., pumpkin golf and hayrides.

The Elizabethtown Area High School basketball team will operate a concession stand, and Hitch Coffee and Fuego Latino will be on-site with food trucks. The Kids Center at GEARS will host a chicken barbecue at the Fall Festival, with tickets available for purchase at GEARS in advance or on-site on the day of the festival. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll, applesauce and a dessert.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department will have fire trucks on-site, and a variety of vendors and information booths will be set up.

“We really want to thank the Elizabethtown School District and fairgrounds for use of the facility,” Eck-

ert said, noting that Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church also provides use of its parking lot for the festival. Members 1st Federal Credit Union is the event sponsor, he said, and he expressed thanks to the Elizabethtown Police Department and fire police for their support of the festival.

“It’s really cool to be able to do an event where you can come a spend a little money if you’re able to or you can just do all the free things,” Eckert said, noting that the Fall Festival would not be possible without the groups that partner with GEARS. “It’s great when the community comes together, and everybody is on the same page to offer a fun event for the community.”

For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www.geatintogears.org.

To purchase tickets for the chicken barbecue, email wendymusser@get intogears.org, call 717-367-0119 or stop by the GEARS Kids Center office, 70 S. Poplar St, Elizabethtown.

When you look down the column called “GF,” which represents “goals for,” in the Lancaster-Lebanon League boys’ soccer standings, there is one clear leader - Donegal High School. The Indians have scored 52 times against their opponents with Elizabethtown the closest at 46 goals scored.

In their last three matches, the Indians outscored opponents by a collective 9-2 score, winning two while also losing 2-1 to Palmyra in a nonleague Saturday game.

Donegal improved to 11-4-0 and to 7-1-0 in league play with a 2-0 shutout of Octorara on Tuesday, October 4 at home.

Travis Zimmerman ended the scoreless tie in this game with a goal in the 57th minute, scoring off a Jacob Melleby assist. Only six min-

Shut Out

utes later and, off a Brody Bonham assist, L.D. Hanes scored his team-leading 22nd goal of the year to double the lead as the Indians out-shot the Braves 9-2.

That 2-1 loss to Palmyra contained a great deal of excitement late in the match.

The Cougars scored with 11 minutes left only to have Hanes even the score off a Tye White assist in the 74th minute.

Palmyra’ Braydon Sunho prevented overtime with a goal with three minutes to play.

The non-league road game on Friday, September 30, showed why the Indians have racked up so many goals.

Donegal posted a 6-0 victory as Bonham, White and Travis Zimmerman each tallied one goal and one assist.

The goal by Hanes in the 32nd minute made it 4-0 Donegal before halftime. Emilano Santos Bernaldez scored off an Andrew Myers assist and Bonham scored four minutes later off a Zimmerman assist to make it 2-0 at the 10-minute mark. Aiden Weber connected with White on goal number 3.

In the second half, Josh Leidich gave an assist to Zimmerman 16 minutes in. Aiden Dickinson scored on an assist by White to cap the scoring in the 65th minute.

FOOTBALL

Donegal faced a tough undefeated Wyomissing football team that came into Friday night’s Section Four contest having outscored its opponents 216-38 over five games. The Spartans had also averaged over 300 yards rushing per game.

Breaking away from a 7-7 tie in the second quarter, the Spartans improved to 6-0 (3-0 league) going on to top the Indians 41-7 at Donegal.

“We played very well for the first quarter and a half,” Donegal head coach Chad Risberg said.

Wyomissing scored on a Drew Eisenhower 48-yard dash to the endzone in the first quarter. The Indians (15, 0-3 league) tied it on Noah Rohrer’s one yard surge over the goal line to make it a 7-7 game in the second stanza.

Donegal’s defense didn’t have an answer for the threeheaded rushing monster of the Spartans. Eisenhower, Charlie McIntyre and Matt Kramer each racked up real estate with Kramer leading the way at 102 yards on 12 carries. Eisenhower gained 92 yards on nine carries, including the 48-yard TD. McIntyre scored two touchdowns while gaining 87 yards on six rushing attempts.

To complement that attack, Chase Eisenhower added 38 yards on seven carries and one touchdown.

“They are a very good team,” Risberg said. “They took control with their size and athleticism.”

Rohrer led the Indians offense with 74 rushing yards on 15 carries. He also caught a pass for 12 yards from Landen Baughman.

Now 11-4 Overall

Risberg maintained the “next game” mentality with an emphasis on continuing to work on improving.

“We are getting back to work at practice and looking to finish the season strong,” he said.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Donegal defeated Susquehannock 3-0 in a non-league girls’ soccer game on Thursday, September 29. The Indians, who are climbing up in the Section Three standings behind Cocalico, improved to 8-2-3 overall (4-0-3 league).

First-year head coach Adam Morris has worked with the athletes to turn around a program that went 2-13 in 2021.

“This year’s group has been playing well together as a team and with confidence,” Morris said.

“Our girls have come into this season with a fresh start and a vision of what they want to achieve,” continued the coach. “Our seniors have stepped up. Our midfielders Sophia Floyd, Gina Phillips and Brianna Zuch have been solid. The middle of the field has been bolstered by three freshmen - Kamryn Runkle, Halle Bires and Kathryn Gehman - all bringing energy to the field.”

Being unbeaten in league play is also partly attributed to the person minding the net.

“Our freshman goalkeeper Hailey Siedman only conceded nine goals in her first ten games,” Morris pointed out. “We hope to be pushing for district playoffs for the first time since the 2010 season.”

FIELD HOCKEY

In Section Two field hockey action, the Indians were involved in three straight

matches that ended with a final score of 2-1. Donegal was on the winning side of two of these matches - both in overtime, improving to 3-4-0 in league play (5-8-0 overall).

The Indians edged LampeterStrasburg on Thursday, September 29 and won at Elizabethtown the following night before falling short at Manheim Central on a drizzly Tuesday night, October 4.

In the L-S match, Sarah Gainer scored the equalizer in the fourth quarter, giving her team an opportunity to win in overtime. Kate Page scored the game-winning goal. On the night, Marie Gehman also

registered an assist.

On the Donegal side of the field, goalie Ella Miler made four saves.

Miller was tested 21 times in the Elizabethtown match, holding the Bears to just one goal. Gainer had the goal in regulation and Makayla Ober scored the golden goal in overtime with Hailey Houck coming away with an assist.

Donegal was held scoreless until the fourth period of the Manheim Central match. Gehman, scoring off an assist by sophomore Ruth Myers, put her team on the board. Miller finished with five saves in the 2-1 loss.

Lecture Series Will Offer Thought-Provoking Talks

The annual Elizabethtown College Lecture Series offers audiences the opportunity to be enlightened, engaged and entertained, and this year’s lineup is no exception. The series will kick off on Wednesday, Nov. 2, with a talk by Anthony Ray Hinton, author and advocate for criminal justice reform. On Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023, Sekou Kaalund, managing director at JPMorgan Chase & Co., will speak. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Inc., will speak on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, and the series will wrap up with a talk by Valerie Jarrett, author and chief executive officer of the Barack Obama Foundation, on Sunday, April 23, 2023. All lectures will be held in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, at 7 p.m., with the excep-

tion of Wozniak’s talk, which will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 7:30 p.m.

The speakers were chosen to offer a range of topics and appeal to a wide audience, said Keri Straub, associate vice president for marketing and communications at Elizabethtown College. “We have a rich tradition of selecting speakers who will address societal topics and issues and present a thought-provoking lecture that has broad appeal,” she said. “Elizabethtown College presents speakers of national and international renown who enhance the educational experience for our students and create meaningful public dialogue.”

Hinton’s lecture, “The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life, Freedom, and Justice,” will discuss the 30

years Hinton spent on Alabama’s death row after a wrongful conviction for murder. Since his release in 2015, he has traveled the world sharing his story and advocating for change to prevent similar injustices from happening to others.

Kaalund will discuss “Leading for Sustainable Community Impact.” At JPMorgan Chase & Co., he oversees senior relationships with some of the largest investment bank clients in the world.

“The Story of Apple Computer” will be the topic of Wozniak’s lecture, which will be presented as part of the High Center Forum. He will discuss the history of the company, from its founding in 1976.

Jarrett will present a lecture on “Finding My Voice: What Does It Mean to Belong?” As the senior adviser to President Obama from

2009 to 2017, she was the longestserving adviser to a president in history.

With the exception of Wozniak’s talk, all lectures are free. All attendees must preregister for each lecture. For more information or to register, visit www.etown.edu and search for “lecture series.”

Dinner And Family Fun

“We encourage people to come into our church, check out us, share a meal and have some fellowship,” said Gail Ruhl, describing the annual chicken potpie dinner at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, and this year, it will feature “A Night With Noah” after the dinner.

The meal will be available for sitdown service or to go from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, Ruhl said. The menu will include chicken potpie, green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts and assorted beverages. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.

Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support upcoming mission trips. Although the destination of

next summer’s trip is not finalized yet, Ruhl noted that the church has a long history of supporting projects around the world. “All proceeds will be used for mission work locally, nationally or globally,” she said.

This is the first time the church is combining the dinner with an event afterward. “We haven’t done a dual event like this before, but we’re hoping families and individuals will stick around for Noah’s ark,” she stated.

“A Night With Noah” will feature activities in multiple locations throughout the church, all based on the story of Noah’s ark from the book of Genesis.

“It’s going to start off with a short, animated video about Noah’s ark,” said John Renninger, who is the event coordinator. “Then, we’ll go into who Noah was as a person, talk about his family and so on.” Additional stations will include the opportunity to measure the

distance of the ark’s length and width, play games and hear Bible verses related to the story of Noah.

“I have somebody who is going to be Noah, and then I have someone who will be speaking as the voice of God,” Renninger noted, adding that a backdrop of Noah’s ark will also be set up, along with animal face masks as a photo station.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along for the event, and Renninger noted that the activities are geared for people of all ages.

“Any child through grade school and middle school can do these activities and enjoy them,” he remarked.

“Older kids can help some of the younger children. It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with

a lot of things to do. It’s a way to get the whole family involved.”

“A Night With Noah” will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Renninger recommends arriving in time to start at 6 as all attendees will progress in one group through each station. “If you want to see the whole story of Noah, come at the beginning,” he said.

For more information on the potpie dinner or “A Night With Noah,” visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call the church at 717-665-3400.
