N
ancy Shonk has cooked for hundreds, served on boards, coordinated community events, sung in a church choir and even spent a decade escor ting Mount Joy ’s most famous groundhog around town. In other words, she’s been busy. For more than four decades, Nancy has embraced her own philosophy that if you’re going to live in a community, you should be part of it. Now, at 87, she’s considering a move away from Mount Joy - and reflecting on all the ways she’s been part of the town she loves. She had planned to leave the area to move closer to family, following the death of her husband of 30 years in May, but a car accident in early September put those plans on hold. While recovering, Nancy reflected on her dedication to the town she’s called home since 1985.

“On April 4th, 1935, at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Foltz in Deodate, a group of women interested in gardening … met to form a Flower Club.” So begins a “History of The Little Flower Club,” written by a member of the Elizabethtown Flower Club. That small group of women has grown into a club that is still going strong, although there is some discrepancy about the club’s exact origins. “We are celebrating 80 years, but in researching the club’s history we discovered that the inception of the club began in 1935, which is 91 years ago,” said president Cindy Wivell. “We may have to decide as a club which date we will designate to celebrate

Students who participated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut nor th to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’ ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes

“I’ve always thought Mount Joy is a beautiful town,” she said. “I just love it.” The second youngest of nine children, Nancy grew up on a farm in North Carolina. After visiting central Pennsylvania, she moved to Lancaster County and worked as an administrative assistant for an art foundry. She also joined the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, where she developed connections throughout the community. Through the Chamber, Nancy met many famous people over the years, including George W. Bush (who wrote her a letter that she has framed), Bill Clinton, Madeline Albright and Margaret Thatcher. “I got to hear them all speak at the annual Chamber dinner,” she said. “It was just an incredible experience for a small-town girl.” Eventually, Nancy started her own business, Shonk Enterprises. She ran the marketing and public relations firm until about 2008,

when she became executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce. She also served on the board of Main Street Mount Joy and worked at the polls for 20 years, registering voters. Nancy’s been a member of Florin Church of the Brethren since moving to Pennsylvania, and when asked how she’s served the church, her answer comes quickly. “I cook, cook, cook,” she said with a chuckle. Nancy began cooking for the Mount Joy Ministerium’s Lenten Wednesday lunches, which rotated among local churches. When the rotation ended, she wanted to continue the fellowship, so she began coordinating a free community luncheon on the first Wednesday of each month at Florin. “I get the speakers to lead the devotion, and I’m in charge of the kitchen,” she said. “I didn’t know that I could serve 50, 75, 150 people, but God gave me the gift, so I just continued doing that.” Nancy’s also served meals with COBYS and Friends in Action International. “That’s when I discovered I could feed 200 people,” she said with a laugh. Nancy calls her cooking “creative,” particularly when it comes to experimenting with soups. “I think I’m a good cook,

and I can turn out food if I have to,” she said. Her community service has extended well beyond the kitchen. She spent four years on the board of Milanof-Schock Library, has served with Seniors Are Living Treasures (SALT) and Friends in Action International, and coordinated Mount Joy’s participation in the National Day of Prayer for five years. During her time with the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, Nancy also served as the handler for Mount Joy Minnie, a groundhog puppet. “I was Minnie’s handler for 10 years,” she said, noting that she took over the responsibility from Bob Myers, who originated the concept. Nanc y began cutting back on her commitments earlier this year as her husband, Bob - also known as “Shonky” - experienced declining health. He died on May 22 at age 95. The couple met because of misdelivered mail. When Bob received mail intended for Nancy, he called her, and she made plans to stop by his house to pick it up. “To make a long story short, I always say he liked the way I walked off his porch,” she joked. “So that was the beginning of a long and lovely relationship.” In her limited free time,

Nancy enjoys reading, working crossword puzzles and singing in the Florin Church choir. Before her accident, she walked about a mile and a half most days. “I’m slowly working back up to that,” she said. As she looks to her future, Nancy said she’s happy Mount Joy has been her home for so many years. “This is a beautiful little town,” she said. “In the 40-some years I’ve been here, I have seen changes. I’ve seen it grow, and it’s wonderful. A lot of little towns are fading out. Stores are closing and people are moving away. But not Mount Joy.” And she admitted it will be hard to leave. “I have made so many dear friends here,” Nancy said. “I have absolutely wonderful friends, and this is a wonderful community. But my daughter keeps telling me, ‘Mom, wherever you end up living, you’ll make new friends. You make friends very quickly.’”

The course provided Hill with training on many aspects of personal care settings, including personal care services, medications, resident rights, cultural competency, and fire prevention. She said the experience has given h e r ad d i t i o n a l k n o w l edge that she can use in her current role and as she continues to grow in senior living. Renee Lentz, executive director at Juniper Village at Mount Joy, encouraged Hill to pursue the license

Hill said she has also benefited from the support of mentors and fellow team members throughout the licensing process. W hen she had questions, she knew she could turn to others at Juniper for guidance. As she continues in her role as connections director, Hill hopes to apply what she has learned while continuing to grow professionally. She said one of the most important lessons she has gained through her work is the importance of compassion. A bicycle bedecked in fall leaves. A wagon bearing a Bible verse. Maybe even a creative costume to complete the look. Those are some of the possibilities for a parade that’s part of Risser’s M e n n o n i t e C h u rc h ’s annual Fall Fest. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the backyard of the church, 8360 E liz abethtown Road, Elizabethtown. The highlight of the evening will be a decorated wheels parade, b e g i n n i n g at 6 p. m . Participants of all ages are invited to decorate any set of wheels - bikes, wagons and more - with fall flair and a Bible verse before joining the parade. Those taking part are also encouraged to dress in costume as they walk alongside their wheeled creations, although costumes and decorations should avoid Halloween themes.
“The parade is open to everyone of all ages,” said Arlene Heistand, planning committee member. “We are asking for the costumes to be family-friendly and fall-themed.” She suggested flannel shirts, bib overalls, cozy sweaters embellished with artificial leaves, flowers, pumpkins, gourds and more. The parade is just one part of an evening designed to bring people together and celebrate the season. Fall Fest will also feature fall games, warm drinks, baked goods, a campfire, a photo booth and more. Families can spend the evening enjoying seasonal treats and activities, gathering around the campfire and visiting with friends and neighbors. The event offers plenty of opportunities for children and adults to participate, whether they choose to decorate for the parade or simply enjoy the festivities. R i s s e r ’s M e n n o n i t e Church has a long history of hosting fall festivities, and

this year’s event continues the church’s tradition of welcoming the community for an evening of fellowship and fun. “Risser’s has a community event ever y year,” Heistand explained. “We usually do a community picnic, but sometimes we do a fall event.” The events give church members a chance to spend time together while also opening the doors to the wider community. Fall Fest provides an opportunity for people to meet others, enjoy some seasonal activities and learn more about the church. “ We a t R i s s e r ’s a r e striving to walk together with Christ as we build
relationships within our communit y,” Heistand said. “If you are looking for a safe and fun Saturday evening event with the whole family, please join us for our Fall Fest. It will be a relaxing evening of warm drinks, games, campfire and fellowship for all ages.” R i s s e r ’s M e n n o n i t e Church holds Sunday school for children and adults at 9 a.m., followed by a worship service at 10 a.m. Those attending Fall Fest are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Blooming from pg 1 are a bonus to the time of connection I enjoy with the other members during t he l unche on. I t ’s my favorite day of the month. After joining, I quickly got recruited to serve on the board, and it’s been an absolute privilege to work alongside such a wonderful group of women that keep the club moving forward while preserving the traditions that were started over 90 years ago.” Even though the group is called the “Elizabethtown Flower Club,” members come from outside the town, Wivell said, adding, “Our members are primarily from the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy areas, but we have members that drive more than 30 minutes to attend.” The group welcomes new guests to join the monthly meetings. “If they enjoy eating good food, meeting new people and are interested in topics related to flowers and gardens, they will enjoy the Elizabethtown Flower Club,” Wivell said. She emphasized that the club does not have an online presence, and that’s intentional. “We’re an old-fashioned club and intend to keep it that way,” she explained. “In fact, our members get a personal phone call to see if they will be attending the next meeting. We welcome phone inquiries for more information.” To learn more about the club, contact Barb Mowrer at 717-684-5331 or call Wivell at 717-405-1930.

our 100th anniversary.” W hen it formed, the club collected dues of 25 cents a year, and club members were expected to grow seven annuals and five perennials annually. “These were exciting times, when each member tried to raise perfect blooms,” the history states. “Between f lower shows, arrangements would be taken to the meetings for comparison and criticism.” While some things have changed, such as the annual dues, the mission of the club remains steady almost a century after its inception. “Our club meets monthly on the first Monday of each month at The Gathering Place in Mount Joy. We enjoy a delicious lunch and typically hear from a speaker on a gardening topic,” Wivell said. “ We collect a small membership due that covers the cost of a little membership booklet with each member ’s contact information and a schedule of the year’s programs.” The club year runs from September through July, with no meetings in January and February. “We also hold two silent auctions a year where memb ers br ing things from home to b e auctioned,” Wivell remarked. “ T he items range from plants, baked goods, household décor and holiday decorations. It’s a fun time more than anything.” Wivell noted that the club - which cur rently includes 106 members - was more active in the community in its earlier years, with members enter ing f lower shows and supporting local organizations such as the library. “At this point, our membership primarily gathers for our own education and enjoyment due to physical limitations,” she said. “However, if our members express interest in becoming more active, we will welcome oppor tunities that make sense for our group.” Wivell has been a member since 2022. “My daughter and I attended a meeting together that included a presentation on orchids, and I was hooked,” she said. “The presentations

Lancaster Science Factory Receives Grant
The Dart Foundation presented a check for $300,000 to the Lancaster Science Factory. Participants in the presentation were (from left) Rita Vazquez, Sean Gumbert, Karen Knecht, Shirley McKillips, Rob Reed, Kayla Layng, and Isiah Perry.
The Lancaster Science Factor y has received a $300,000 grant from the Dart Foundation - the largest one-time gift in the Science Factory’s history. The funds will support two new interactive exhibit areas at the Science Factory. The first area, the Wonder Zone, will engage visitors in exploration of light, color, sound, forces and motion, and engineering challenges. The Wonder Zone is designed to be developmentally appropriate and accessible for kids ages 3 to 5, but it may be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Construction on the Wonder Zone area is now underway in anticipation of a grand opening to the public the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15. The Wonder Zone will feature exhibits like Colorful Shadows, the Everbright, Shape Projector, Ramps and Magneticars, Reach Sound exhibit, Pin wall, Clinky Rods, and Engineering Wall. The exhibits will also feature early literacy prompts and tips for caregivers to engage their early learners in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
The second exhibit area, How People Make Things, will bring manufacturing to life, showing how everyday objects are made, and highlighting the people who make them and their careers. Development of the hands-on exhibit area is still underway, and the Science Factory anticipates installation in early 2027. This exhibit represents a partnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to adapt the Pittsburgh institution’s travelling exhibit, How People Make Things, for permanent installation at the Science Factory. The exhibit teaches students about introductory principles of manufacturing through the concepts of cut, mold, deform, and assemble. These projects are part of a larger, multiyear exhibit refurbishment at the Science Factory, where 40% of all exhibits were installed when the organization first opened its doors in 2008. To date, $570,000 has been raised toward an estimated project budget of $750,000. Future improvements will feature updates to the Bubble Zone, the Water Lab, and additional exhibit areas.
