Tennis Team Edges Crusaders, Blanks Lebanon

Donegal picked up another pair of wins, edging Lancaster Catholic 4-3 and easily sweeping past Lebanon 7-0.

Aubrey Jones, Janelle Kingsboro, Ellen Zern, and Kensington Edmond each jumped in with both doubles and singles successes, while Corrine Watson and Emily Frownfelter contributed to the doubles successes.

On September 16th the 4-3 win over Lancaster Catholic was earned primarily in the singles competition, with the only doubles point coming from Frownfelter and Kingsboro.

Kingsboro also picked up a singles win and was joined in singles success by Edmond and Jones to snag the victory.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Last week the Lady Indians experienced setbacks from ELCO (3-0) and Octorara (4-2), but prior to those losses, celebrated their first win of 2021 on a trip to Lancaster Mennonite (2-1).

Persistence paid off and the Donegal club claimed the September 16th victory in overtime.

Center midfielder Gina Phillips notched both goals for the Lady Indians, and both times was assisted by Sophia Floyd. The duo’s first success came with just five minutes left to play in regulation and propelled the game into overtime, where the pair got the job done again after five minutes of the extension. “We continued to control the ball and never panicked,” pointed out head coach Ben Sarro. “They played with a lot of heart and never gave up on the game. We controlled the ball most of the game and we were finally able to finish a couple goals.” On the 20th, the team fell behind Octorara 4-2 despite a full-game effort from the club. Octorara struck early, notching a goal after just four minutes, but the Indians responded with one of their own from Mia Steffy less than a minute later.

Despite trailing 4-1 as the clock wound down to its final minute, Donegal refused to quit and was rewarded with their second goal from striker Laken Merchant with less than 30 seconds left to play.

Indians’ keeper Clara Bigony stopped a barrage of shots from the Braves finishing the contest with 16 saves.

In last Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to ELCO, Bigony scooped up another seven saves.

FOOTBALL

The Indians’ trip to AnnvilleCleona on the 17th featured a slew of touchdowns and Donegal pulled away for their third win, 54-27.

The Tribe ran circles around the Dutchmen, running the ball in all seven trips to the end zone and amassing a staggering 466 rushing yards.

Jon Holmes (114 rushing yards) ran in three of those TDs.

Noah Rohrer (93 rushing yards, 4 PATs), Connor Hyle, and quarterback Landen Baughman each took a trip into the end zone.

Wide receiver Wendell Jonas delivered a pick six after his first quarter interception at the 25-yard line and Zeke Amaro made good on a two-point conversion to add to Donegal’s tally.

Rohrer and Ian Brown led the team in tackles with seven apiece.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kathryn Fernald and Sam Rothstein won their respective races to lead the Donegal cross country teams in double victories last Tuesday over Garden Spot and ELCO on Donegal’s home course.

For the girls, Fernald, a freshman, broke the tape for a first-place time, and course record of 20:38, and just behind her was teammate Hadley Shoaf (20:59).

Six of the top eight finishers sported Indians’ jerseys with Addison Houck (21:51), Marleigh Ballard (21:56), and Emma Myers (22:39) crossing fourth, fifth, and sixth. Natalie Greiner (24:15) placed eighth.

The boys produced paralleled success with two Donegal seniors breaking away for a one-two finish. Rothstein also earned a course record winning the event in 17:12, and Hunter Gehman cruised into second at 17:35.

John Spackman (18:24) and Dylan Lenhart (18:30) crossed the line next for the Tribe, placing ninth and tenth, respectively.

“Many of the boys and girls ran season best times,” pointed out head coach Philip Koser.

The previous Saturday the teams participated in the Bloser Invite at Big Spring in which Rothstein placed 16th and Gehman 20th to each receive a medal and help boost the team to a collective sixth place finish.

“They ran great times on a hilly course on a very humid, warm day,” credited Koser.

Houck put together the quickest Donegal time in the girls’ race coming in 51st in a pool of over 200 runners.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Donegal boys’ shutout their last two league competitors to improve their league record to 4-2 (5-3-1 overall).

Last Wednesday night the team pulled ahead of ELCO by a 2-0 count. Tye White connected for the goahead goal in the first half and then went on to assist Rowan Willing’s second half goal.

Two days earlier, Donegal blanked Octorara 3-0 while hosting last Monday’s league contest.

Indian striker Joseph Turbedsky was on fire in the first half, notching the first two goals less than a minute apart to give Donegal the 20 edge heading into the second half. Dylan Wakefield assisted Turbedsky on the first goal 19 minutes in and LD Hanes fed Turbedsky the ball for the second success at the 20-minute mark.

White netted goal number three, assisted by Turbedsky, a few minutes into the second half to give Donegal the three-goal cushion to ride out the contest.

FIELD HOCKEY

Donegal field hockey was on both ends of a 1-0 scoreboard last week, prevailing over Lampeter-Strasburg at home last Tuesday after falling to the Ephrata Mountaineers by the same margin on a trip to Ephrata the previous weekend.

Grace Dickinson tucked in the game-winning, and only goal of the showdown against the Pioneers. Dickinson’s success came in the first quarter assisted by Jade Haines.

The remainder of the contest proved to be a defensive skirmish with keepers from both teams, CC Emswiler of Donegal, and Brooke Zuber of L-S, registering eight saves apiece.

The triumph over L-S signified Donegal’s third league win putting them at 3-1.
