DSAA Relocates, Plans Sober Spooktacular By Chelsea Peifer
Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is moving into a new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, and executive director Stacy Emminger said with a smile, “In my mind, I see us already outgrowing this place, too.” That is the kind of big vision that Emminger has for DSAA. Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 2014. She and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA previously operated from an approximately 400-square-foot office space at 15A W. Main St., Mount Joy,
and now has room to offer more programming at its new approximately 1,275-square-foot location. With the lease signed on Sept. 1 and moving well underway, Emminger and assistant director Lexi Mercado plan to open the doors of DSAA’s new location to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. An open house event is in the works. Details on that, as well as regular hours for the new site, will be posted at www.facebook.com/ DonegalSubstanceAbuseAlliance/ and http://dsasquared.org/ once determined. DSAA currently offers support groups for family members, assistance entering into treatment, and the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) program. Beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 9, instructor Kim Stoltzfus will offer 12-step yoga for See DSAA pg 6

The community is invited to celebrate and support all that is happening at the school by attending the annual MCCS benefit auction, set to take place at the school on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28.

approximately 7 p.m. On Sept. 28, an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Silent and live auctions will start at 9 a.m. Auction chair Paula Hynum noted that more than 600 items and experiences will be part of this year’s auction. Sports memorabilia, getaways, sporting event tickets, toys, home decor, tools, and outdoor equipment are just a sampling of the merchandise that will cross the auction block. The silent auction selection includes numerous gift cards and services such as car washes, oil changes, and cleaning. Bidding for the silent auction will close at 1 p.m. A children’s festival will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with carnival-style games, prizes, and bounce houses. For a one-time fee, children will receive a wristband for unlimited admission to the activities. MCCS high schoolers will volunteer at food tents, which will be open on both
days and feature menu items including hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos, snow cones, homemade baked goods, and more. Elizabethtown Grange milkshakes - made with the same ingredients and using the same process as the crowd-pleasers available at the Elizabethtown Fair - will also be for sale. Proceeds from food sales will support the high school classes as they save funds for their respective senior class trip. Proceeds from the auction support the operational expenses of the school as it strives to fulfill its mission to come alongside parents to educate children and youths academically and spiritually. At MCCS, student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $200,000. Those who want a sneak peek of items that will be up for bids at the auction may visit https://mccs.schoolauction.net/ 2019auction/catalog.
Auction from pg 1 The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions.

Goat Races from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
Last autumn, torrential rains and soggy fields caused the Falmouth Civic Assocation to cancel the Falmouth Goat Races for only the second time in nearly four decades, but this year - barring any more severe weather - the goats will be back. The Falmouth Goat Races will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Governor Stable Park, 101 Governor Stable Road, Bainbridge,
which is located just off Route 441 in the village of Falmouth. Admission is free, with a nominal fee per vehicle for parking. Festivities will kick off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m., and the Elizabethtown Area High School pep band will play. Goat races will begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the afternoon. Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy Putt-Hower said that as many as 60 goats race each year, with youth and
senior divisions for the animal handlers. Individuals are welcome to register their goats to race for a nominal fee by filling out a form on the morning of the event. Goats will also be available to rent on the day of the race for those who would like to compete but do not own a goat. Individuals are selected from the crowd to act as judges at the finish line. In addition to the goat races, the event will feature arts and craft stands, children’s barrel train rides, and “cow patty” bingo for adults. Food and beverages, as
The Falmouth Goat Races are a longstanding tradition that began with a joke. According to Putt-Hower, a group of oldtimers was sitting around the village store discussing life’s misfortunes and bad luck at the horse race track. Each person owned goats as family pets, and someone made a remark that they might as well bet on the goats instead. That was all it took to spark an idea for Ken Brandt, who got to work placing advertisements for a goat race in Falmouth, listing the phone number of his friend who had made the joke. Still to this
well as goat-themed merchandise, will be available to purchase. Putt-Hower emphasized that volunteers are still needed to serve in various capacities at this year’s event. Interested individuals may call 717-367-6801. According to Putt-Hower, when the goat races first started, they took place on the baseball field on Governor Stable Road. Today, the location is no longer simply an athletic field but a popular park that the association has been able to enhance with a pavilion, bathrooms, and a playground.

interested individuals. “Anyone that identifies with the 12-step program is welcome,” said Emminger. The yoga sessions will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Emminger and Mercado plan to create a welcoming sober space on-site too, with social events every other Friday evening for people who are in recovery. “We’re going to be kicking off a lot of things this fall, and we’re open to other agencies and all the A’s (anonymous) groups using our space,” explained Emminger. “We basically want it to be full all the time.” Emminger’s goal is to purchase a larger space for DSAA in two years so that the organization can provide support and programming for even more individuals in the greater Mount Joy area. She is committed to serving this part of the county, noting that it can be difficult for people to get into Lancaster city where addiction resources and assistance are often more readily available. On Saturday, Oct. 26, DSAA will host its second annual Sober Spooktacular from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. The public is invited
to attend to learn about and support the work of DSAA. Costumes are encouraged. Dinner will be served, and Brandon Novak will be the featured guest speaker. Born in Baltimore, Novak is known for being a professional skateboarder with the renowned Powell-Peralta team. He appeared in several popular MTV films as well as the television shows “Viva La Bam” and “Bam’s Unholy Union” starring Bam Margera. In 2008, Novak and coauthor Joseph Frantz published “Dreamseller,” a book based on Novak’s life, including his experiences with heroin in Baltimore. He now travels the country as an addiction and recovery speaker for Banyan Treatment Center in order to raise awareness and help addicts find the treatment that they need. “We want people to come and support us, but we also want people to come that maybe Brandon’s story can help to change their mind about addiction,” shared Emminger. “With Brandon you have the story of someone who was literally a millionaire and lost everything. His story is a pretty gnarly one.” To purchase tickets for the DSAA Sober Spooktacular in advance, interested individuals may email lexi.dsaa@gmail.com or call 717-492-4596. Proceeds will support the operating costs of DSAA.

Donegal’s Lady Booters Sit in Second Place by Vaughn Brown
The Donegal girls’ soccer team has continued to stay in the hunt in Section Three. They strengthened their hold on second place with three more wins last week while losing only one. Donegal (3-1, 5-4-1) trailed ELCO (4-0, 8-2-0) by one game in the standings after winning 2-1 at Cocalico, 8-3 versus Garden Spot, 10-1 over Octorara and ending the week with a 6-0 loss to undefeated Ephrata. “Despite our recent Ephrata result, I’ve been very happy with our growth this season,” commented head coach Scott Summers on his young team’s progress. “Overall, at the mid-way point we are playing at a level where I believe we should be. We’ve seen a lot of improvement from the start in terms of our preparation and the quality of our play.” The Indians needed a little extra time to come up with their win over the Cocalico last Monday but Madison Sheffer’s scoring effort a little over four minutes into the first overtime period proved the difference in the tightly contested match. Credit Donegal keeper Rena Rankin who turned away 10 of the Eagles 11 shots on goal with the only blemish coming off the foot of Madeline Mattos in the first minute of the second half to put Cocalico up 1-0. The Indians struggled offensively, but
made the moments count as they put away both of their scoring opportunities. Kyla Collins (53:00, 55:00) and Sophia Floyd (9:00, 36:00) scored twice against Spring Grove while India Foreman (6:00), Claire Stoviak (28:00), Allison Wallander (47:00), and Laken Merchant (60:00) all netted one in the Donegal victory. The Indians fired 23 shots while Amber James, filling in for Rankin, turned away seven in the net. Only separated by a goal at 4-3 heading into the break, Donegal outscored Spring Grove 4-0 in the second half as Carley Kibler’s hat trick provided the Rockets with their only offense of the game. After Foreman, Floyd, and Stoviak created a 3-0 advantage, Kibler scored twice before Floyd’s second goal made it 4-2, but Wallender, Collins, and Merchant put the game away for Donegal. Seven different players got on the board versus Octorara as all 10 goals came in the first half for Donegal before Annaleah Waldron made it 10-1. Foreman and Floyd netted two apiece while Hannah Dunn, Danielle Brady, Merchant, and Madison Sheffer each added one. Rankin (2), James (6), and Clara Bigony (1) teamed up in goal to effectively turn away Octorara’s offensive attempts. With ELCO standing as the only section loss on Donegal’s record, Summers is very optimistic on his
team’s chances through the rest of the season but knows his players, which include five freshmen, have to learn to play through their emotions and stay consistent. “We believe we have solid game plan going into the second ELCO match and we just need to go out and execute for 80 minutes. The second half of the season is important to our process,” Summers said. “We have a lot of very young talented players but we have to see if we can handle the moments of adversity as things tighten up in the second half. If we are going to realize similar success to the first half, it will take a total team contribution and the continued maturation of our younger players.” BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team has struggled this season but Donegal (1-2, 5-5-1) picked up two wins last week with a 2-1 victory over Spring Grove and a 2-0 win over Ephrata while dropping a 1-0 contest to Cocalico which went to double overtime. Aaron Weitzel’s goal in the 96th minute of play ended a game in which the Indians doubled up their corner kicks with a 10-5 advantage and outshot the Eagles 9-6. Owen Ollar made five saves for the Indians while Cocalico keeper Zak Kreutzer stopped 10. Spring Grove took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of their game on Wednesday, but Philip Herzog (50:00), and Kieran Kramer (74:00)
provided the last words in the second half as the Indians held on for the close win. Keeghan Cote was in net for Donegal and turned away two of Spring Grove’s three shots of the day. Jose De La Cruz (1:00) and Herzog (35:00) gave the Indians all the offense that they needed versus Ephrata on Saturday as both defenses stayed strong in the second half. Ollar stopped five as the offense dished out 10 shots and had two corner kick opportunities in the victory. FOOTBALL Thanks in part to Lancaster Catholic’s 30-22 loss to Lebanon on Friday night, Donegal took over sole possession of first place in Section Three with a 31-13 dismantling of Ephrata at War Memorial Field. Donegal (4-0, 4-1) featured Joe Fox, who had 19 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Garrett Blake (15-82, TD) in a run attack that amassed 255 total yards on the ground in a game that almost got away from the Indians early after falling behind 7-0. “Our defense just needed to settle down a little bit,” stated head coach Chad Risberg. “We weren’t recognizing formations right away and they were going no huddle for a little. Our kids figured it out and got the job done.” After the Mounts marched down the field and scored on their opening drive, the Donegal offense sputtered and went three and out on the ensuing possession. The Mounts
proceeded to again move the ball steadily down field before a timely interception in the end zone by Kasper Sipe gave the Indians the ball at their own 20-yard line. Six plays later Fox punched in from eight yards out to make it a 7-7 game. In all, Donegal intercepted the Mounts three times and recovered
two fumbles and also got some key special teams play which included a blocked PAT, a recovered onside kick and a downed punt on the Ephrata one-yard line. “We capitalized on their mistakes which gave us some momentum and we didn’t turn the ball over which is key as well,” commented Risberg.

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition touchdown run in the third quarter and a 55-yard pick-six by Mason Ober in the fourth put an exclamation point on the Donegal victory. TENNIS Donegal (5-1, 5-3) has shown this season that they can play with the best of them. They trailed only Lampeter-Strasburg (6-0, 9-3) and were tied with Manheim Central (5-1, 85) at the end of last week. The lady Indians lost 70 to power house Manheim Township, but rebounded with a 5-2 win over Elizabethtown and a 6-1 victory over Solanco and earned the praise of head coach Trent Hoffmaster in the process. “I could not be prouder of this team. We are 51 in the section with section favorite Lampeter-Strasburg left,” said Hoffmaster. “We were one 10-point tiebreaker away from beating Manheim Central. That would have put us in the league playoffs. This team has exceeded all my expectations.” Donegal controlled the majority of the match with Elizabethtown, only losing the final two singles matches Photo by Cheri Sine of the day. Ellen Zern and Emily AshDonegal’s Hailey Fry handled E-town’s Katelyn Weissend in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at number two singles to help the Indians ley won 8-2, Hailey Fry and Emma Shelly were victorious 8-1, and Kailey to a 5-2, Section Two win over the host Bears last Wednesday. “We also blocked a PAT which is always huge, and when we can pin an opponent inside the 5-yard line, it flips the field and makes them drive the ball the length of the field.” Following Fox’s score, the Indian’s short, line drive kickoff hit an Ephrata helmet and bounced back into the arms of a diving Fox at the Mount’s 39-yard line. Blake’s seven-yard plunge put the Indians up 14-7 with 7:41 to go in the second half.
loss. The Indians had 10 shots on goal with eight corners and Emswiler denied seven of the Spartan’s nine shots. CROSS COUNTRY Donegal’s girls remained undefeated with wins over Annville-Cleona, 20-43, and Columbia, 15-55 while the boys earned a 23-32 victory over A-C and a 15-55 win over the Tide at home last week. Finishing second overall, Myra Naqvi (21:51) spearheaded a group of six Donegal runners that crossed the line within 1:30 each other. Also fin-
Later in the second quarter Ephrata was able to score again but Fox broke through on the ensuing PAT attempt for the clean block and a 1413 Donegal lead. Then, with 42 seconds remaining in the half, the Indians took over on the Ephrata 24 -yard line after recovering a muffed punt return by the Mounts. Three plays later, Jacob Erb nailed a 37-yard field goal with zeros on the clock for the 17-13 Donegal lead. Another Fox

Frownfelter and Nupoor Patel won 8-6 while in singles play Ashley won 6-4, 7-5, and Fry came away with a 6-2, 6-1 victory while Shelly (1-6, 6-3, 10-5) and Zern (7-5, 2-6,10-8) each dropped heartbreakers. Against Solanco, Ashley and Zern fell behind 5-2 but were able to rebound for an 8-5 win while Fry and Shelly easily won 8-2 and Frownfelter and Patel came away with an 8-4 victory. Ashley (6-0, 6-0), Fry (6-1, 6-1), and Zern (4-6, 6-4, 10-1) also earned singles wins while Shelly (4-6, 7-5, 10-1) lost in tiebreaker. FIELD HOCKEY Facing adversity for the first time in a long time, Donegal (4-2, 5-3) still remains dangerous and was tied with L-S (4-2, 7-2) for second place in Section Two at the end of last week. The Indians picked up wins over Cocalico, 4-1, and McCaskey, 7-, but dropped a close 2-1 decision against Garden Spot on Friday. Using three first half goals from Kiera Baughman, Regan Clark, and Morgan Mullhausen the Indians built an early lead over the Eagles before Baughman’s second tally of the game pushed the lead to 4-0. C.C. Emswiler (2) and Hannah Jenney (2) split keeper duties for Donegal. Five different players scored versus McCaskey on Wednesday as the Indians outshot the Tornado 20-1 and earned nine corners. Emswiler stopped one while Baughman and Emma Miller scored twice and Sarah Leidich, Madison Leety, and Julianne Wheeler each added one apiece. Children’s games and activities will be offered in a special Kids’ Zone. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. The Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center will be open, and history tours of the furnace ruins will be offered through-
out the day. Snow explained that in the 19th century, the riverfront from Marietta to Columbia was famous for large and productive foundries producing pig iron. When molten iron was poured in a cast, the ingots looked like piglets attached to the main mold - hence the nickname of “pig iron.” With eight furnaces and a rolling mill located throughout Marietta and Columbia, the iron industry had an impact on the area’s economic development and population growth and earned Lancaster County a high ranking in the production of pig iron at that time, according to www.mariettarestoration.org. The Musselman/Vesta Furnace was built in 1868 and used anthracite coal delivered from northeastern Pennsylvania by the canal system and later via the railroad. Pig iron produced in the furnaces was used to make rails for the flourishing railroad industry. Pig Iron Fest is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club and the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Proceeds from the event will benefit the preservation of the furnace site and Rotary charities.

Mount Hope To Host Harvest Festival, Pig Roast, And Auction
Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community in Manheim will host its annual Harvest Festival, Pig Roast, and Auction on Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Displaying some of the gift baskets that will be part of the auction are (back, from left) director of advancement Kris Wilson, volunteer Mary Stinchcomb, chaplain and life enrichment director Jim Day, certified nursing assistant Maria Zuniga, and (front) residents Jay Eby, Nancy Wildsmith, and Robert Lehman. How has Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, maintained its positive reputation in the community for so many years? Director of advancement Kris Wilson is convinced that one of the keys to MHNRC’s positive reputation is the quality team members. “They are our greatest asset,” remarked Wilson. “Our staff continue to provide residents with top-level care and often see their work as a calling rather than a job. We aspire to have Mount Hope be a place to belong, rather than just a place to work.”
At its 50th anniversary celebration in June, MHNRC received citations of excellence in care and mission from both the Pennsylvania State Senate and House of Representatives. “Our legacy is one where no senior goes unserved,” stated Wilson. “(MHNRC) fills a unique niche, providing skilled long-term care and rehabilitation services. Seniors in the county, as well as the broader community, are welcome regardless of financial status.” According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on See Mount Hope pg 15

Mount Hope from pg 14 Medicaid or have very limited funds to pay for the cost of care, and in 2018 MHNRC gave more than $1.2 million in charitable care. Recently, a brother and sister searching for care for their mother commented, “From the moment we walked in the door (at MHNRC), we were, and still are, welcomed by kind, compassionate people. We have an overwhelming sense of relief knowing our mother is being truly cared for in an atmosphere of ‘home.’” Yet again this year MHNRC was named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Being able to fulfill Mount Hope’s mission of providing quality, affordable care to middle- and low-income seniors, as well as disabled seniors, is something Wilson emphasized is made possible only through the support and generosity of the community. The public is invited to attend the annual MHNRC Harvest Festival, Pig Roast, and Auction on Saturday, Sept. 28, from
11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pig roast dinners will include a pulled pork barbecue sandwich, baked beans, coleslaw, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Those interested in a pig roast dinner are encouraged to order tickets ahead of time by calling 717-665-6365, ext. 233 or 258. Meals will be available for pickup or eating on-site from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or while supplies last. People are invited to bring along lawn chairs; however, some seating is provided. Handicapped-accessible parking is available. At the Harvest Festival, musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day and antique tractors will be on display. Free activities will include a bounce house, barrel rides, feed sack races and relays, face painting, and wagon rides. At 1 p.m., there will be a children’s pedal tractor pull event for youths ages 3 to 14, with prizes to be awarded for winners in various age categories. New this year will be a rock painting activity and an interactive shelled corn table with toy tractors and trucks of all sizes.
More than 50 themed baskets will be up for bids in the silent auction. Bidding will be open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with winners announced shortly after. A live auction will begin at 2:45 p.m., featuring a variety of items and experiences, such as tickets to area entertainment and attractions, fine jewelry, and handcrafted items. Snacks and homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase. Additionally, MHNRC will make its debut at the Manheim Farm Show, set to take place from Monday to Friday, Oct. 7 to 11. East Fairview Church of the Brethren donated its food stand trailer, along with roasters, refrigerators, metal shelving racks, and storage items, to MHNRC to serve hot roast beef and cheddar sandwiches at the Farm Show. Wilson noted that plans are also in the works for MHNRC to embark upon facility renovations. For more details on the Harvest Festival, readers may contact Wilson at 717682-8026 or advancement@mthope nazarene.org.
