You’re Invited to a Family Fall Festival

Head out to Glossbrenner

Church for fun, fellowship and festivities, all free of charge, at the church’s annual Family Fall Festival. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 713 Church St., Mount Joy.

The evening will feature games, crafts, food and more, said Jessica Rockey, children and youth director for Glossbrenner Church.

“We will have pumpkin decorating, as well as assorted fall crafts and an opportunity to get a fall family picture with a frame,” she stated. “We will have a variety of games for all ages with prizes and candy. We, of course, always have a bounce house which is a big hit for the kiddos and a relief to parents for them to get some of their energy out!”

Everything at the event is free, she said, because the church wants anyone who is interested to enjoy a night out.

An Event of Distinction and Similarities

Song, dance, cuisine, accessories, culture. What’s not to like?

Not only does the One World Festival bring people out, the event brings people together.

“Personally, I think people are more similar than they are different,” said Deepa Balepur, the chairperson of the nine-member One World Festival committee. “At the end of the day, we’re all human beings striving to be good citizens of the world. One world, many cultures, shared future.”

The next installment of the annual One World Festival is upon us. The multicultural, multifaceted, multipurpose festival will be staged from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Franklin & Marshall College’s Alumni Sports and Fitness Center, 929 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. The sponsored event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome, but registration at https://oneworldfestival lancaster.org is requested.

There’s always something happening in Maytown and its surrounding areas. The Maytown Civic Association wants to spread that message, so the group is organizing its first community day. The event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta.

Maytown Community Day - A

“We might have different customs and flavors, but we are all living in this one world,” said Jenny Schulder Brant, a member of the One World Festival committee. “We do need to interact, and we have to find that common thread that unites us. We have people from all over the world living in this community. We all send our kids to school together. It’s nice to be able to celebrate that.”

This year’s One World Festival will feature 12 musical/ dance performing groups, including ones from the Indian, Latin-American, Irish, Greek,

Rotary Fall Festival Will Deliver Family Fun

“The Rotary Fall Festival is a great opportunity for families to enjoy outdoor fun and learn more about the important organizations that help support the Lancaster community,” said Bill Weik, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise. “They can see firsthand the positive results from organizations working together.”

The festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Aberdeen Acres, 495 Mark Drive, Elizabethtown.

The Uptown Band will provide live music from noon to 6 p.m. A kids’ area and mechanical bull riding will be offered during the festival.

“The Kids Zone is a combination of items from Big Bright Bounces in Elizabethtown - bounce house and 90-foot obstacle course,” Weik shared. “There will also be pony rides for the kids.”

Hachet and ax throwing will be featured from noon to 5 p.m., and members of the Millersville University equestrian club will be on-site to provide riding demonstrations at 3 p.m.

A silent auction will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the event will feature a live auction portion beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“We will have a food truck all day, and kids’ and adult beverages

are provided by Altana,” Weik said. “Lori’s Lattes will also be on-site.”

This is the club’s sixth fall festival, he noted, explaining that the event began during the pandemic after the club lost its two major fundraisers at the time due to the shutdown. Since people were permitted to hold outdoor gatherings, the club members pivoted and held a festival the first Saturday in October during the Preakness Stakes.

“We did well and continued it forward,” he noted.

The festival will be held rain or shine, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Along with offering a fun day for families, the fall festival is also a fundraiser for an organization supported by the Rotary Club.

“Forty thousand dollars of the proceeds will support the Lancaster County Food Hub’s new Outreach Center,” said Beth Mack, fall festival chair and board member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise, directing people to learn more about the project at www.lancasterfoodhub.org.

“Proceeds will also support student scholarships, local community grants and international projects.”

Volunteers from the Wittel Farm, which is located directly behind Aberdeen Acres, will be on-site at the festival, sharing how their crops support the Lancaster County Food Hub and encouraging guests to consider volunteering.

Weik said that since the first fall festival, the club has provided more than $257,000 in support of local initiatives.

“Some of the larger items supported a hot/cold transport van for Meals on Wheels Lancaster; a van for Off The Streets Lancaster to support getting the homeless into permanent housing; equipment to fully furnish the Bench Mark Program’s Women’s Strength and Fitness Center; literacy projects for Manheim Township School District; and other small projects to support Girls on the Run, Anchor Lancaster, Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning, Power Packs, KPETS, Arch Street Center, Second Grace in Mount Joy and others.”

He shared that the club also supports projects outside of the local area as well as outside of the country.

“Most notable is our continued support annually to the Budapest Rotary Club - they have been instrumental in assisting with the various needs with Ukraine - as well as Amigos De Honduras, where we have been providing financial support with building schools and clean water initiatives,” he said. “We have a member who goes there annually to support these efforts.”

Weik encourages everyone to come out to the festival for fall fun.

“It’s a great family day for family

fun! If they want to be outdoors, relaxed, listen to a great band and have activities all day for kids and adults, they will want to be here,” he said. “There are many live and silent auction items. For example, we have tickets to the Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles game, several tickets to Penn State football games, vacations and more. Plus, all the proceeds support a great cause!” Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise meets on Thursdays at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz.

“We are a breakfast club, so the morning starts bright and early at 7 a.m.,” said Weik, who lives in Elizabethtown. “Our club is open to members all over the county who share the passion of Service Above Self.” To learn more about the club, visit www .lancastersunriserotaryofpa.com. Tickets for the fall festival may be purchased ahead of time or at the event. Readers who use the promo code ETOWN and purchase tickets ahead of time will receive a discount on their purchase. There is no admission charge for children age 17 and under. To purchase tickets, visit https://bit.ly/430ImD3.

Make Time for Lancaster Watch Weekend

Lancaster County has a rich horological history (and for the layperson, that means “having to do with measuring time”). Now that history will be celebrated during the inaugural Lancaster Watch Weekend, happening from Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28.

“For most of the 20th century, Lancaster, Pa., was one of the most important watchmaking cities in the world,” said Amanda Okum, events coordinator for the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, one of the organizers of the event. “In Lancaster, home of the Hamilton Watch Co., precision, innovation and mass production came together to create some of the finest mechanical timepieces ever made. Today, the world-renowned watchmakers and collectors in the county have created an exciting new hub of the wristwatch world.”

Lancaster Watch Weekend is open to everyone, though museum entry fees apply and some of the events require a reservation. Hosted by the National Watch & Clock Museum, Hamilton Watch Boutique, RGM Watch Co. and Brent Miller Jewelers, the three-day program will feature exhibits; horological experiences; guided tours; and presentations that celebrate the past, present and future of watchmaking.

Events will take place at the National Watch & Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia; the Hamilton Watch Boutique in the historic Bowman building at 149 N. Duke St. in Lancaster; Brent Miller Jewelers at 1600 Manheim Pike in Lancaster; RGM Watch Co., 801 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and Clock Towers Condominiums, 917 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. National organizations RedBar Group and the Horological Society of New York will also participate in the event, bringing their communities of collectors and watch lovers into the mix.

“The event’s sponsors have passionate clients and members from across the country, so guests from near and far are expected,” Okum shared. “The event is the result of a collaboration of collector groups, watchmakers and retailers who want to highlight Lancaster’s historic role and growing relevance today in the watchmaking world.”

Highlights of the weekend will include a talk by Roland Murphy, founder of RGM Watch Co., who will share details about watches seen in movies through the perspective of his own career, Okum said. Murphy will focus on watches seen in ”2001: A Space Odyssey,” ”The Muse,” ”Dead Poets Society” and others. Rory McEvoy, executive director of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC), will lead a behind-the-scenes event at the

National Watch & Clock Museum to examine some rarely seen artifacts from Lancaster’s watchmaking history. At Clock Towers Condominiums, visitors can enjoy a tour of the old Hamilton Watch Company factory.

“This is more than just a watch event,” Murphy remarked. “It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, community and the remarkable horological legacy that lives on in Lancaster County.”

The National Watch & Clock Museum is run by the NAWCC, a nonprofit member organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the art

and science of timekeeping. Recently updated and expanded displays include the Hamilton and Bulova exhibits, the history of wristwatches exhibit and the Public Time gallery.

“The National Watch & Clock Museum has the largest collection of watches and clocks in North America, with examples from across the globe

Middle Eastern, traditional German and Jewish communities. On the average, each performance will last about 20 minutes.

Also featured will be seven food vendors offering Asian, Indian, Latin, Egyptian, Italian and Greek cuisine and one offering international desserts. In addition, the festival will include a dozen global merchandise vendors.

The family-friendly event will also include a kids’ area complete with arts and crafts, activities, face painting, balloon animals and caricature drawing.

“There’s a lot of energy,” said Kris Bradley, One World Festival’s marketing director. “From the first (musical) performance it’s amazing, and then it’s just one after the other. You’ve got to go just to see the performances.”

“It’s very festive,” said Balepur. “It’s just a great time for everyone. To see Lancaster County come together, it’s uplifting.”

More than 4,000 local residents are expected to attend from communities across Lancaster County, with varying backgrounds and different heritages.

“They are people who are looking to have fun and have a family experience that’s also educational,” said Schulder Brant. “It’s amazing being part of a community of likeminded people who are looking to understand people who are ‘different’ than them. Everyone in that room is choosing to be there with an open mind.”

“They are people who are genuinely interested in learning about different cultures,” said Balepur. “We have observed that, and there is a lot

Day in the Park will feature activities and fun for people of all ages. Games, including corn hole, plinket and wiffle ball, will be offered. Children can enjoy a bounce house, and additional carnival-style activities such as a bean bag toss and ping pong bucket toss will be featured. Community organizations will host tables with information, and attendees will have the opportunity to win a variety of giveaway baskets.

“This is the first time for this event, and we’re hoping to make it an annual event,” said Cindy Wivell, president of the Maytown Civic Association. “We wanted to make sure the entire community is aware of all the special opportunities and organizations in our community.”

The Maytown Civic Association formed in 1961 and was re-established in 2019. Its mission is to advance, promote and support local organizations. It also works to maintain and manage the open space located within the Route 743 right of way, also known as Maytown Center Square. Among the community initiatives hosted by the association is the annual square lighting ceremony held during the holidays.

of genuine conversation. Last year, someone told me, ‘This is as close as I’ll get to visiting these countries.’”

Following periods of discussion and planning, the One World Festival was established in 2022. The concept was met with initial enthusiasm, and the event has just kept gaining momentum since.

“It started off with a bang and a couple of thousand attendees, and it’s stayed like that,” said Balepur.

“We’re really receptive to community feedback. We heard the community

when they said, ‘We had a great time, but why not try …’ When we all come together, share our traditions and learn from each other, we build a stronger community for all of us. That’s what makes Lancaster County such a special place.”

“I think the core values are really very similar,” said Schulder Brant. “They’re people who want the best for their families, like they want the best for their communities. It’s people who are taking care of their families and being part of a great event. There are similarities in our humanities, but everybody’s different, and seeing those differences is a positive thing.”

Festival

HUGE KIDS’ SALE! SEPT. 25-27

“We want to give back to our amazing community and provide a time for families and others to be able to make memories without having to worry about them costing money,” she explained. “We know times are tough, and trying to get out of the house and do something fun is usually so costly. We want to take away that stress so people can be in the moment and focus on this wonderful abundant life Jesus died to give us!”

She also noted that the party is open to everyone.

“It might be called ‘Family Fall Fest,’ but you do not need a family to join in on the fun,” she stated. “We want to welcome everyone in our community with open arms and hope they can see that they can find friends and fellowship here at Glossbrenner. Come on out and join us for some good fellowship and food. We want everyone to know they are welcome at Glossbrenner regardless of where they are at on their spiritual journey.”

The church has held the festival for the past four years, and it’s been an opportunity for members of the congregation to serve while providing fun for the community, Rockey said.

“Our guests have a lot of fun, but our volunteers also have a great time!” she remarked. “We have helpers from our church in their teens up to their 80s. It is just so special seeing Christ’s church body come together in love with their different God-given talents to pull off an event like this.”

Glossbrenner Church alternates between traditional and contemporary services with a praise team every other week on Sunday mornings.

“I would say our church is unique because our attendance stays steady even though one service can

be so different than the next week,” Rockey commented. “I think it has helped the different generations appreciate that others worship differently. Our service runs from 10 to 11 a.m., and we always have something for the children at our services, usually holding a kids’ church down in our fellowship hall during the sermon time.”

Sunday school for people of all ages is held immediately following the service and runs until about noon.

“Sunday school is always a great place to dive deeper into God’s Word with your peers, ask the tough questions and even share your doubts and struggles in a safe, compassionate environment,” she noted, encouraging people to check out Glossbrenner Church. “You do not have to know anything about the Bible or even know where you stand with this whole Jesus thing to join us at church. Church is filled with imperfect people seeking a perfect Savior they find in Jesus Christ. We do life together here at Glossbrenner, always looking to God’s Word for answers to life’s tough questions and comfort of His promises in the struggles of this life.”

The Family Fall Fest will be held in the upper parking lot of the church on the corner of Water and Angle streets.

“We ask for people to park in our lower lot and walk up,” Rockey said. “If the weather is inclement, we have held it before downstairs in our fellowship hall, and it was still a fun-filled success. So, rain or shine be prepared to join us for a good time!”

Watch Weekend

and throughout the centuries,” Okum commented. “From weird and wonderful to complex and beautiful, these objects tell the fascinating story of the history, science and art of timekeeping.”

She encourages anyone with an interest in watches, clocks or history to check out activities during the weekend.

“Attendees can expect a unique,

insider look at the wristwatch industry’s history and future, provided by those on the front lines of making, collecting and preserving watches,” she said. “This is the kind of event you’d expect in Philadelphia or New York, but we’re lucky to enjoy it here at home!”
