Donegal field hockey is hitting their stride picking up wins over Manheim Central and Elizabethtown last week with plenty of credit going to senior midfielder Emma Miller who notched all five Donegal goals in the triumphs.

Miller earned herself a hat trick in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Manheim Central, with two unassisted and one assist from Grace Dickinson.

Keeper CC Emswiler also rose to the occasion with six saves.

Miller gave another clutch two goal performance in last Monday’s 21 win over the Bears of Elizabethtown in their first league showdown of the season. The win on the road came down to the final quarter after both teams had failed to secure a goal in the first three quarters of play.

Miller’s first goal came off of another assist from Dickinson, but Elizabethtown capitalized on a penalty stroke and the contest looked destined for overtime.

With just 34 seconds left in regulation, Miller connected a second time to clinch the contest.

“I am super proud of the team,” praised head coach Gina Allessie. “They are playing together and working hard with positive attitudes.”

The Miller and Dickinson duo were at it again a few days earlier when Donegal came up just short in a 3-1 loss while hosting Penn Manor on the 10th. Miller, assisted by Dickinson, netted Donegal’s goal in the second quarter, but the Comets matched it with one of their own as well as two more in the second half.

Emswiler gathered up nine saves in the loss.

CROSS COUNTRY

The girls’ cross country team celebrated wins over Annville-Cleona and Lampeter-Strasburg last Tuesday and came up just short of a three-team sweep, losing the headto-head battle against Manheim Central by a single point.

“We lost a really close one to Manheim Central,” commented head coach Philip Koser, noting that the team expects to race MC at least two more times this season. “So, we will be looking for some redemption.”

Donegal harrier Hadley Shoaf cruised to a third-place finish and Donegal’s top time of 21:26. The next Indian runners came through in rapid succession, Kathryn Fernald (22:23), Addison Houck (22:25), and Marleigh Ballard (22:38) claimed spots 9th, 10th, and 11th.

“Hadley Shoaf had a great race. It was exciting to see her up at the front,” Koser added. “Our other girls were in a tight pack and are improving. We are progressing quite well.”

The boys’ team overcame Manheim Central while dropping behind Annville and L-S in the collective results. Senior Sam Rothstein set the pace for Donegal with a 17:11 season best time that earned him third overall. Hunter Gehman also produced a season best time (17:21) and came in sixth, and Dylan Lenhart finished under the 19minute mark for the first time in his career (18:54) to place 13th.

FOOTBALL

During a September 10th nonleague showdown at Eastern York, it was York that held the first quarter lead 14-7, but Donegal regrouped for a massive second quarter and ran away with the win 42-14.

“Second game in a row that we got down early and had to come back,” pointed out head coach Chad Risberg. “Kids showed some resiliency in doing that, but we want to not have to do it every game.”

Cody Stough accounted for three running touchdowns, while racking up 148 rushing yards. Jon Holmes visited the end zone on two occasions, once on a 53-yard pass from Landen Baughman in the first, as well as a 10-yard run in the second, and Ian Brown provided the Indians fifth TD of the night on a 42-yard Baughman pass.

Kicker Noah Rohrer had a flawless six-for-six PAT performance.

Squelching the Golden Knights attempts to respond, Baughman also led the night in solo tackles with six, and Holmes had five and forced a fumble.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Win, lose, or draw, Donegal has certainly experienced a bit of everything in their jam-packed schedule, picking up wins over Solanco and Wyomissing, tying with Ephrata, and dropping a contest to Cocalico in just five days’ time.

Up first was a 5-1 win over Solanco on the 10th, where the scoring was plentiful for the Indians. Tye White earned himself a hat trick, one first half goal and two in the second, with an assist coming from Brody Bonham on his third connection. Donald Hanes and Rowan Willing each chipped in with a goal during the offensive surge.

The following day, the club took on Ephrata and both teams allowed a second half goal which culminated in a double overtime extension and a 1-1 draw. White again provided the goal for Donegal, this one coming just seconds before regulation expired, robbing Ephrata of the lead they had held since the 60-minute mark.

On Monday, the 13th the team hosted Wyomissing and rose to a 21 triumph. Joseph Turbedsky notched the only first half goal assisted by White. In the second half, the duo swapped roles the Indian’s second tally on the scoreboard that White knocked in assisted by Turbedsky.

Wyomissing was only able to produce one goal in response, a second half PK, giving Donegal the one goal edge for the night.

Nevy Ncube and Caden Mullen split time guarding the Indians goal to and recorded three and six saves, respectively.

Cocalico handed the Indians their one defeat in the sequence, a 1-0 loss on Tuesday the 14th. The fiveday blitz of competition brings the Indians’ overall record to 3-2-1.
