Got the blues? Head to downtown Mount Joy for a cure. Main Street Mount Joy will host Blues, Brews and BBQs on Friday, Sept. 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. and all day on Saturday, Sept. 25. “There will be barbecue and beer specials at local restaurants and some blues music in the evening,” said Dave Schell, executive director
of Main Street Mount Joy. Blues guitarist Harry Marr will entertain on Friday night. “Harvey’s BBQ is usually a hot spot for this event, so you’ll want to order ahead of time and use their drive-through,” Schell recommended. “Bube’s Brewery is planning some menu items and is planning some blues music. We usually have a good response from the downtown restaurants.” See Blues pg 7

Pig Iron Fest Will Celebrate Local History
“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history.” adding that another vendor will offer crafts inspired by local Native American tribes. “ We’ll have a blacksmith and a guy who uses what we call a ‘putt-putt’ engine, or an engine dating from the early 1900s, to mix ice cream.” Snow noted that while the festival is traditionally held adjacent to the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace, this year’s event will take place in a new venue. “This year will be a little different, but we are still going to
focus on history,” he said. “We’ll have some displays about the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region. “This area was very important in the production of pig iron,” Snow explained. “It was ideally situated along the river for easy transport. What is now the Northwest River Trail was once a big industrial zone.” The festival is sponsored by the Donegal Rotary Club, and money raised by the event will be used to preserve local historic sites. Proceeds will also benefit the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank and will be used to support veterans’ organizations, including Glenn Hope Care Farm in Felton. The motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.

“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities, including a hayride, crafts and pumpkin painting.”
Live music will be performed by Tim Rinard, and juggler Chris Ivey will also entertain. Vendors will be on site, featuring a variety of items. “We have someone who sells 19th-centuryinspired jewelry,” Snow said,

“It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’ I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they also encountered unforgettable sights along the route. “A big highlight was Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “We rode through Beartooth Highway. … We rode 27 miles uphill. It was a crystal-clear day, and you could see for miles. It was just beautiful.” The participants had concerns ahead of time that they’d all make it up the incline - and then concerns about coming down through hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. Despite the challenges, the riders experienced no major health concerns or problems - only some muscle aches, blisters and irritated asthma. Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. cycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding, “We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another crosscountry bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? I like doing them, and I feel so much better when I do them, and I don’t want that to end,’” Wise remarked. “That made me realize what a lasting impact this trip is going to have on these boys.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.life cyclesteam.org.

“It’s important for us as a church to be connected to our community,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee of Rissers Mennonite Church. With that goal in mind, the church will hold a community picnic on
Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 4 p.m. The festivities will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. “We will have lots of activities for children,” Arlene said, noting that a presentation by Ryan Bridge, The Bug Man, will be among them. “He will be bringing live insects and doing an educational presentation. We’re looking forward to it. Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, has planned a variety of activities. Some of our Fourth Fridays are retail-based, and this is one that is more restaurant-based.” Schell noted that for a small town, Mount Joy has a variety of restaurants, and he encouraged people to make plans to attend the weekend event. “If you haven’t been downtown to eat at one of our local restaurants, this is a great opportunity to try one out,” he said. “If you have been downtown to eat, it is a way to try out a new place. Miller Scores Five Times in Two Donegal Wins

Miller gave another clutch two goal performance in last Monday’s 21 win over the Bears of Elizabethtown in their first league showdown of the season. The win on the road came down to the final quarter after both teams had failed to secure a goal in the first three quarters of play. Miller’s first goal came off of another assist from Dickinson, but Elizabethtown capitalized on a penalty stroke and the contest looked destined for overtime. With just 34 seconds left in regulation, Miller connected a second
time to clinch the contest. “I am super proud of the team,” praised head coach Gina Allessie. The following day, the club took on Ephrata and both teams allowed a second half goal which culminated in a double overtime extension and a 1-1 draw. White again provided the goal for Donegal, this one coming just seconds before regulation expired, robbing Ephrata of the lead they had held since the 60-minute mark. On Monday, the 13th the team hosted Wyomissing and rose to a 21 triumph. Joseph Turbedsky notched the only first half goal
assisted by White. In the second half, the duo swapped roles the Indian’s second tally on the scoreboard that White knocked in assisted by Turbedsky. Wyomissing was only able to produce one goal in response, a second half PK, giving Donegal the one goal edge for the night. Nevy Ncube and Caden Mullen split time guarding the Indians goal to and recorded three and six saves, respectively. Cocalico handed the Indians their one defeat in the sequence, a 1-0 loss on Tuesday the 14th. The fiveday blitz of competition brings the Indians’ overall record to 3-2-1. The new clinic is directed by physical therapist Alisha Greene, who has joined the Phoenix team with over five years of experience in the outpatient setting treating injured patients and those who need orthopedic rehabilitation. The clinic offers a video running analysis program that analyzes athletes’ running form and help to assign exercises to help with injury prevention and performance enhancement. Additionally, the clinic features the newest physical therapy equipment, such as Normatec Pneumatic Compression, which mimics the muscle pump of the legs to enhance the movement of fluid and metabolites out of the limbs with the goals of helping to relieve muscle aches and pain and to increase circulation for increased flexibility and range of motion. David estimates that more than 1,000 items from 40 club members will be for sale at the event. “We’ll also do appraisals on
their items,” he noted. In a small building off Route 72 in Manheim, David has amassed an impressive collection of OJ items. Shelves are filled with dishes, tea sets, plates, banks, figurines, toys, lamps and more. Each item bears a sticker, stamp, engraving or embossment that identifies it as Made in Occupied Japan. As David explained, U.S.
forces stayed in Japan from 1945 to 1952, with the goal of helping the Japanese rebuild after World War II. “From 1947 to 1952, General MacArthur declared that anything exported from Japan was to be marked ‘Made in Occupied Japan,’” he stated. “It was marked that way so the American people would know it and would buy it to help the Japanese people get back on their feet.”

The OJ club has existed for more than 40 years and is currently run by Shoko Tanaka, who lives in California, and Kathy Gardner, who resides in Indiana. At 77, David continues to add to his collection and said he expects his youngest son to one day acquire his treasures. Until then, he’s always on the hunt for more. “It’s an affordable hobby,” he remarked. “I love finding different items. You have to look at each one and see if the piece is marked.
