Two Towns, One Big Expo
BY CAT SHANNON

We are all stronger and more effective when we work together. That’s the inspiration behind a free Business & Community Expo hosted by the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce and the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce.
The expo will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy. The collaborative event aims to connect local businesses, organizations and residents, giving attendees a chance to learn about services, build relationships and strengthen the community.

Building on the success of a combined mixer the Chambers held earlier this year, Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Denise Grove and Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Michele Emenheiser wanted to continue working together for the
benefit of Chamber members and the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy communities.
“This expo is a great chance to connect, showcase your business and meet new people,” Grove stated. “What makes it even better is teaming up with the Mount Joy
Chamber. Working together brings more energy, more opportunities and more excitement for everyone.”
The public is invited to attend the expo and engage with more than 40 local businesses and organizations, including nonprofits, health care providers, real estate

Film and Forum Will Spotlight Addiction Recovery
Addiction, its impact on families and the ability to come through to the other side will be featured when Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) and Dr. Anne Kinderwater Carroll of Lancaster County Joining Forces for Children present a program at the Milanof-Schock Library. Strength & Support: Resources for a Recovery Journey will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. The evening will feature a documentary screening, community conversation and local resources for those impacted by addiction.
The event will include a screening of “No Matter What: A Family Story of Addiction Recovery,” a documentary that follows one family’s honest and hopeful journey through addiction and into recovery.

Mark your calendar for a treasure hunt on Saturday, Sept. 27. That’s the date of the annual bazaar and yard sale at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ (UCC), 11 E. Elizabeth St., Maytown. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to organizers, attendees can expect to find lots of like-new items in mint condition, all for a bargain.
“Yard sale items are varied and in good condition,” said Rev. Dr. Ronnette ComfortButler, pastor. “They include bedding, linens, holiday items, jewelry, books, toys, collectibles, furniture, framed

The documentary shares the journey of the Theurer family, a multi-generational household made up of a father and adult daughter in recovery, her young son, a mother and a teenage daughter. Their story weaves together each person’s unique challenges and triumphs, showing how they draw strength and hope from one another while navigating recovery as a family.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question-andanswer session with the family featured in the film. Carroll will facilitate the discussion and will guide attendees through reflection and conversation.

pictures and signs, decorative items and many quality household items. There is something for everyone! This year’s items include many good quality antiques and unique artifacts.”
Free coffee and doughnuts will be available for shoppers, and there will be opportunities to purchase homemade baked goods or tickets to win giveaway baskets.
“The baskets are a variety of themed baskets,” Comfort-Butler said. “The winner will be drawn at 2 and does not need to be present to win.”
The church has been hosting the event for many years, but this year, organizers have made a change to the pricing.
“With a few exceptions, all items are price by donation,” Comfort-Butler remarked.
Holding the event provides an opportunity for church members to connect with the greater community and raise funds for church projects.
“It is a mission of the church to be a visible outreach to the Maytown community,” Comfort-Butler said. “We have the bazaar every year to raise money for our missions and to provide good quality items for our community that are reasonably priced.”
Proceeds from the event are used to fund mission and community outreach programs of the church.
“In the past, we have supported
Raise28, our local food bank, the Cherry Street Home, shut-ins in the community and various global and local missions,” Comfort-Butler shared. “We also address local needs as we are made aware of them. Each year we select different missions to support. At any time during the year, we add to this list as needed.”
Maytown Reformed UCC holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m. Live Zoom sessions are offered for people who are homebound. Intergenerational Sunday school is held at 9 a.m. Vespers service is held on Thursday on Zoom, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Take a step back in time and enjoy a weekend of family fun when Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days returns for its 28th year. The event will be held at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge, on Saturday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 21.
Breakfast will be served both days at 7 a.m. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday and after an interdenominational church service that will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following opening ceremonies both days. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be featured at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.

Each year, the Old Fashioned Field Days spotlight themed antique and collectible items.
“We’re featuring Sears and Roebuck home and garden items and soda advertising and collectibles,” said Ron Bernhard, a member of the event committee.

Both days will also feature opportunities to explore hit and miss gas engines and antique tractors and see a wide variety of demonstrations.
“We’ll have a blacksmith, someone pressing apple cider, shelling corn demonstrations,” he noted, adding that war re-enactors will also be on-site. A variety of craft vendors will also be featured.
Lots of activities will be offered for children as well, said Tonya Bernhard, a member of the organizing committee.

“We have barrel train rides for the kids,” she said. “We have a pumpkin patch they can ride a wagon to and pick out a pumpkin, one pumpkin per person. There is a kids’ zone run by Word of Life Church with games for kids to play, and that’s all free.”
Food and music will also be featured.
“All of our food is from civic organizations and local churches,” Tonya said, noting that the entire event is sponsored by the Conoy Lions Club. Summit Hill will provide live music on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, a benefit auction will be held, with proceeds used to fund future field days.

“You never know what you’re going to find at the auction,” Tonya shared. “It’s donated goods, so we don’t know what’s going to be there until a few days before it happens.”

professionals, banks and restaurants. These businesses and organizations are eager to showcase their offerings and connect with the community, answer questions and offer giveaways and samples, said Emenheiser.
Among the participants is Elizabethtown College. “Elizabethtown College is honored to attend the 2025 Business Expo to foster and cultivate meaningful connections with our local community,” shared Christopher D’Imperio, senior director of corporate partnerships. “The immense value these relationships bring to our campus community cannot be understated, and we are looking forward to growing and building onto the success of our community through collaborative efforts as a trusted educational partner for you or your organization.”
Melhorn Manor is centrally located, making it easy for residents of both towns to attend the expo, organizers said.
Field Days
“Melhorn Manor is excited and honored to be a part of this business expo for the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce,” said owner Allory Melhorn. “Coming from a long line of Mount Joy business owners in my family and being one myself, I am always happy to help promote small businesses whenever I can. I am grateful for the opportunity to host this event.”
Emenheiser encourages residents of both towns to attend.
“Whether meeting local businesses or learning about local nonprofits, we hope attendees leave the expo with a deeper appreciation for the people and services that make our towns great places to live, work, play and shop,” she said.
For more information on the expo, search for the Mount Joy Area Chamber or the Elizabethtown Area Chamber on Facebook, or visit https://mountjoychamber.com or www.elizabethtowncoc.com.

For the church service on Sunday morning, all of the churches in Conoy Township come together to worship, Ron said, highlighting the community aspect of the field days.
Both Ron and Tonya have been helping to organize the event for decades, and they look forward to it every year. They are joined by a committee of volunteers that includes their son, Mitchell, along with Kevin and Sandy Baker.
The overall atmosphere of the Old Fashioned Field Days is relaxing and inviting, Tonya said, and people are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and spend the day, or both days, at the event.
“There’s something for everyone, and there is so much to see and do,” she said. “People who have no interest in gas engines and tractors will still be there all day. There’s lot of things for kids to do.”
The festival draws thousands of people each year, many of whom have been coming since they were children and now attend with their own kids.
“A lot of people come for both days,” Ron said. “It’s just a good, friendly community event. It’s really family oriented.”
The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, follow “Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.
We are pleased to announce the recipients and the schools they will be attending.

documentary “No Matter What: A Family Story of
program is about shining a light on the often-overlooked stories of recovery.

“I think that people need to see that recovery from addiction is not only possible, but probable. This family is testament to that,” she said. “Amazingly, they are willing to open up about their recovery journey. It is unfortunate that most of what we hear in the media about addiction is about the negative - we don’t hear the positive stories. We don’t hear about the thousands of individuals and families that find recovery and heal. We don’t hear about the fact that they lead healthy and successful lives.”
Emminger first learned about the film several years ago at its premiere and knew it could serve as a powerful tool for community discussion.
“It’s important to remember that there are a lot of people in recovery living normal lives, and you would have no idea that they struggled with addiction in their past,” she said. She worked with local partners to bring the screening to a public space, where more people would feel comfortable attending. The event is hosted by DSAA, Joining Forces for Children, Milanof-Schock Library and the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to the film and discussion, resource tables will be available, offering information and support from local organizations.
Joining Forces for Children is a countywide collaborative that works
to address the needs of children affected by substance use through education, systems change and direct support for families. Backed by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, the collaborative connects organizations and individuals working to save lives and strengthen the community.

The fifth annual Nick Hershey Memorial Pickleball Tournament to benefit Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Donegal Junior High School tennis courts, 915 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, with play beginning at 8 a.m.
The Nick Hershey Memorial Pickleball Tournament started as a small group of family and friends coming together to honor Nick’s life (1994-2021) and to raise funds for the DSAA. The tournament outgrew its original location on the John and Mable Hershey Farm. In previous years, the tournament has raised more than $15,000. Last year’s tournament had 60 players. Pickleball players of all levels are welcome, and partners are not required. The tennis courts will be converted to 16 pickleball courts allowing up to 60 players to compete. There will be men’s and women’s A and B divisions based on skill level. Players are guaranteed seven games in a round robin setup. All proceeds will go to the DSAA to support its work throughout Lancaster County as the agency seeks to provide a lifeline to those battling addiction and living in recovery. DSAA recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of providing vital services in the addiction realm. To register for the tournament or to learn more, contact Lisa Hershey at 717-575-0094 or lisah@hersheyag .com. There will be a registration cost.
You’ve worked hard all your life, it’s time to enjoy your retirement Use your home’s equity to help with monthly expenses If you are like a lot of homeowners, you’ve got equity in your home but aren’t sure how you could use it to boost your retirement. Well, there’s something called a reverse mortgage, and it allows qualified borrowers aged 62 and older to pull cash from their home WITHOUT having to worry about a monthly principal and interest mortgage payment.
•Do much-needed home repairs • Cover monthly expenses •Pay medical bills

Not all reverse products are closed by loanDepot. This material is not provided by, nor was it approved by HUD or FHA, or any government agency. This information is not intended to be an indication of loan qualification, loans are subject to credit and property approval. Borrower must meet all loan obligations, including living in the property as the principal residence and paying property charges. Borrowers are responsible for paying property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, maintenance and related taxes (which may be substantial). Failure to pay these amounts may subject the property to a tax lien or other encumbrance or to possible foreclosure. Terms and availability of programs are subject to change without notice. Age requirements apply, check with your mortgage professional. A reverse mortgage does not require monthly repayment of principle and interest, and increases the principle loan amount. Interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which may result in negative equity. When the loan is due and payable, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to the borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan with interest from other proceeds. The loan becomes due and payable when the last borrower, or eligible non-borrowing surviving spouse, dies, sells the house, no longer occupies the property as a primary residence, defaults on taxes, insurance payments, or maintenance, or does not otherwise comply with the loan terms. loanDepot.com, LLC.
