Uncovering Marietta’s Hidden History

wealth of history can be found in Marietta, but much of it has been buried, forgotten or overlooked. Now a

group of volunteers is working to bring that heritage into the spotlight. The Marietta African American Legacy Initiative (MAALI) Team invites the public to a dedication

and commemoration ceremony to honor the heritage of Bethel AME Church and Wesley AME Zion Cemetery and the people who worshipped and are buried there. The ceremony will be held at

“Like many small churches, our congregation has not fully recovered from the years following COVID-19,” said Lynn McCleary, hospital committee member for Saint Luke’s Episocipal Church in Mount Joy. “Our beautiful sanctuary glows with history and memories, but we also thirst for new voices, new energy and fresh ideas.” To help raise funds for the church and get its name out into the

community, Saint Luke’s will host two food fundraisers this month. A bake sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A spaghetti dinner will take place at the church, 209 S. Market St., on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. “Parishioners and friends will either bake or donate items from area bakeries,” McCleary said. “Of course, we would love for anyone reading this article to donate as well.”

Learn more about the people and organizations in the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown area at the Community & Business Expo. The event, a joint effort of each town’s Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17, at Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 5 to 7 p.m. “We’re excited to bring the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown communities together for the second annual Community & Business Expo,” said Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce. “The evening will offer a chance to learn, connect and discover the many businesses, organizations and resources that are part of our communities.” Exhibitors will have information and giveaways, and attendees are encouraged to pick up a card listing participating businesses and organizations before visiting each booth to collect a signature. “Once the card is complete, return it for a chance to win Mount Joy Money or an Elizabethtown gift basket,” said Denise Grove, executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a fun way to meet the businesses and organizations taking part and make sure you don’t miss any of the booths.” The event is free to attend. “There’s something for everyone,” Emenheiser shared. “We invite the public to come by, visit the tables, enjoy the samples and giveaways … and maybe discover a local business or organization you didn’t know about. With more than 50 organizations participating, you’re sure to find something interesting.”

History from pg 1 Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. “ We are going to be focusing on four themes,” said Michael Sweeney, who gathered the people who comprise the MAALI Team. “The program will cover the church burnings, the veterans who are buried in the cemeteries, the Colored School and the Colored Camp Meetings.” As Sweeney explained, on April 19, 1861, both of the African American churches in Marietta were set on fire. Bethel AME burned completely to the ground, while Wesley AME Zion was damaged but later repaired. Just over a year later, Wesley AME Zion and the Colored School (also known as the African School) as well as a home on the property were destroyed by fire. He noted that about 35 Civil War, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans are buried in the cemeteries, including his father, but their history has been hidden.

For years, the property containing the Wesley AME Zion cemetery was abandoned, falling into disrepair. In the early 1990s, two local women, Catherine Tucker and Thelma Mae Waters, received a grant to restore the space but couldn’t prove the property was officially abandoned. Not content to let this histor y disappear, Tina Charles worked diligently to find the proof, and she succeeded. Now Sweeney and the other members of the MAALI Team are eager to finish what Tucker and Waters started. “What that generation was unable to do, we’re making progress to fulfill their vision,” Sweeney said. “Our goal is not only to preserve and honor the history of these churches, cemeteries and communities, but also to make that history accessible to future generations.” The MAALI Team has installed four commemorative markers, two at Bethel AME Church and its cemetery and two at Wesley AME Zion Cemetery. Each marker includes information and a QR code linking to a website where visitors can learn more about the history and significance of the sites. At the dedication ceremony, the program will to u c h o n t h e C o l o re d School, a painful reminder of racial segregation in the region, as well as Colored Camp Meetings, where upward of 5,000 people gathered just outside of

Marietta between 1908 and 1913. Sweeney also wants to highlight women in ministry, including Rev. Charley Thomas, the current pastor at Wesley AME. That church has its own rich history. Jarena Lee, the first woman preacher in the AME Church and the first Black woman to publish an autobiography, preached at the site, Sweeney said. To build his MAALI Team, Sweeney recruited volunteers who care as deeply about Marietta’s past as he does. The members said the project has opened their eyes to a history they didn’t know. John Jenkins worked for years at what is now GSK in Marietta. “I would walk to work, never realizing that part of the lot I walked by was the Black cemetery in disrepair,” he said. Lynn Jenkins said learning about the site was emotional. “ There are human remains there that should be respected,” she said. “That was a big draw for me in helping with this project. When you pass that corner, there are Black people buried there, and everyone should know that.” The MAALI Team has spent countless hours repairing the Wesley AME Cemetery. “When we first got there, the area was in really bad shape,” said Charles Dorm. “ There was junk ever ywhere. We assessed it and started manually cleaning it out.” T he g roup cut down

trees, planted grass, straightened tombstones, excavated and even used ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves. Work is still ongoing, and the team noted that many local individuals and businesses have contributed to the project, including Jones Landscaping, Shull’s Tree Service and the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. Columbia Water Co. donated its services to the project as well. Jeff Hudson, a retired histor y teacher and former vice president of Marietta Borough Council, has been instrumental in helping, as has Andre Dominguez , a retired mechanical engineer who helped with cemeter y conser vation, among other contributions, and Rick Evans, who has also helped with the project. “We want to thank the entire community for their help with this,” Sweeney said, noting that the project is under its $23,750 budget thanks to donations of time and funds. “Even when we’re out there working, people will blow their horns in support, and we appreciate that. We want our history to stand with the rest of the local history, not above and not below, but with it.” Light refreshments will be served at the commemoration ceremony, and the building is handicapped-accessible. Proceeds from the bake sale and spaghetti dinner will help defray the cost of those improvements and allow us to continue creating a warm, welcoming space for everyone who comes through our doors.” It’s been a few years since the church held a bake sale, but the tradition goes way back, McCleary noted. “Years ago, the women of Saint Luke held bake sales twice a year at the old Kmart in Elizabethtown,” she said. “We fondly remember the fun - and the work - of baking, slicing, wrapping, pricing and selling homemade treats from more than 20 kitchens in our congregation. Many of those talented bakers are no longer with us, but their recipes live on. We’ll be pulling out some of those treasured recipes for this sale, along with plenty of new favorites, and we think our customers at Hostetter’s are in for a real treat.” S he said Hoste tter ’s makes the perfect location to revive the bake sale tradition, adding, “It gives us a chance to meet our

neighbors while offering busy shoppers something homemade and delicious to take home - or a sausage sandwich to enjoy while they’re there.” She emphasized that the bake sale and spaghetti dinner have a deep impact. “O f course, we hope people will come for the wonderful food, but our fundraisers are about more than raising money,” she said. “They’re also opportunities to meet our neighbors and perhaps introduce someone to Saint Luke who has never been. Saint Luke is a place where everyone is welcome - including people who have questions. The Episcopal tradition values Scripture, tradition and reason, and we believe faith can include curiosity, critical thinking and even difficult questions. You don’t have to leave your doubts at the door.” She hopes people will come out for either - or both - events. “Come buy a pie, enjoy a spaghetti dinner, meet some of us and help us care for this lovely historic church,” she said. “And if you would like to visit Saint Luke, the congregation and

Nature - and birds of prey - will be in the spotlight at the Great Outdoors Family Expo. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Michael Moore will present “Sparrows Simplified: Making Sense of LBJs (Little Brown Jobs).” Many birders struggle with identifying sparrows, referring to them as LBJs - which stands for “little brown jobs” - or sparrow species. Moore will discuss and then blend the two main approaches to identification - the Peterson System and the Cape May School - to help people identify sparrows. Each of the 16 species of regularly occurring sparrows in the local area will be compared, with discussion of finding and identifying rarities. Moore is a retired biology professor and a past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society. A birder since middle school, he completed a doctorate at the University of Washington in the field of endocrinology of white-crowned sparrows. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s ver y satisfying.”
