Promoting Life In The 17552 BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“We want to make Mount Joy memories,” said Katie Roering, director of marketing for Voyage Mount Joy. “We want to focus on the positivity and the fun and the good things happening in Mount Joy.” Voyage Mount Joy is a nonprofit that formed in June to shine a spotlight on the town. “A group of businesses got together post-pandemic, and we were talking about how Mount Joy has so much to offer as a whole, but there is nobody managing that vision,” ex plained Sheri Smoker Bare, president of the organization and owner of the interior design business Room with a View. Voyage Mount Joy will work closely with the groups already in place, including the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, which focus on specific aspects of the community. Roering said the blueprint for

Voyage Mount Joy came from a book she read about how to create a destination town. It suggested listing a town’s assets. “The list (about Mount Joy) just kept getting longer and longer,” she recalled. Roering and Smoker Bare were determined to market the assets on the list they had created. The idea behind Voyage Mount Joy is to spread the word about what’s new in town and also focus on the town’s rich heritage. “New residents don’t know all that Mount Joy has to offer,” Roering stated. “This nonprofit is about bridging the gap between the historic parts of Mount Joy and the newer parts, between the older residents and the younger residents.” To market Mount Joy, the organization is emphasizing its website, www.voyagemountjoy.com. “We want our website to be the central resource for the town. We want to focus our marketing on our social media accounts as well,” Roering said. See 17552 pg 5

In September of 2017, Kevin and Rebecca Keller’s son, Mason, received a diagnosis that one in every 5,000 young boys receives each year. Mason, who lives in York, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a degenerative disease. “This affects every muscle in his body, even his tongue,” explained Rebecca, who added that people with Duchenne eventually lose their ability to eat without a feeding tube. All cases of Duchenne are genetic, See Love pg 6

Mount Joy Church of God members (from left) Heather Stark, Logan Stark, Joyce Hershey and Hazel Chapin display items for the rummage sale.

When you shop at Mount Joy Church of God’s rummage sale, you’ll be doing more than getting a bargain. You’ll also be making a difference. “Half of the proceeds will go to Mount Joy Helping Services, and half will go to our outreach fund,” explained Heather Sharp, chair of the sale. The rummage sale will be held in the lower level of the church, 30 E. Main St., from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.

“This is like hitting a big garage sale,” said Carole Hayes, describing the Fall Fest at St. John’s Herr Estate. “We have a huge variety of items.” The Fall Fest will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the retirement community, 200 Luther Lane, Columbia. Items for sale will include books, puzzles, household goods, crafts, jewelry and baked goods made by residents. “You never know what we’re going to have for sale,” shared Anita Perrone, president of the executive committee. “This year we have an antique ironing board.” Along with other volunteers, Perrone and Hayes, vice president of the executive committee, spend all year collecting items from residents and residents’ families, as well as donations from the community. “People are always giving their stuff away,” Hayes noted. “We have hundreds of books. We have stuffed animals and toys. People make afghans, hats and dishrags to sell. We really have something for everyone.” The Fall Fest will also feature food for sale, including homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs, sloppy joes and beverages. “The chicken corn soup is our head of dining services’ grandmother’s recipe, and it’s very good,” Perrone said. Soup will be available to enjoy on site and for carryout. Money raised from the Fall Fest will benefit local organizations selected by the commu-

nity’s residents’ council. Proceeds will also be used for the St. John’s benevolent fund. Hayes and Perrone noted that the Fall Fest requires a lot of planning to pull off a successful event. “It’s all run by volunteers,” Perrone stated. “We couldn’t do this without our volunteers.” Hayes encouraged everyone Displaying items to be sold at the Fall Fest are (from left) to come out and shop, eat and Mary Miller, Anita Perrone, Carole Hayes and Linda Fackler. socialize at the Fall Fest. “It’s fun to meet and talk with people,” she said. “It’s just fun to walk around and see what we “Our Business Is Blooming” have for sale and pick up a bargain. Everything is priced Over 340 Varieties of to sell.” As of late August, the Fall Fest was scheduled to be held • Buy Direct & Save indoors at St. John’s, in the • Wholesale & Retail chapel and nearby hallways. Items for sale will include puzzles, toys, games, household goods and shoes. Subs and baked goods will also be available for purchase. “We have a ton of clothes,” Sharp noted. “ We have a lot of women’s clothing, but really clothing for everyone.” The sale is typically held annually, but it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. “This year, we have an abundance of items since we didn’t do a sale last year,” Sharp said. One room of the sale is dedicated to books. “We have more than 100 boxes of books for sale,” stated Joyce Hershey, book sale chair. “Everything is minimally priced, and everything is priced individually.” Hershey said the book sale will feature all types of books, including fiction, nonfiction and children’s books. “ We also have a large assortment of sheet music,” she noted. “We had a lady in

Brittany’s Hope will host the second annual Brittany’s Ball Gala, An Evening to Remember, on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Meredith Jorgensen will be the master of ceremonies, joining event chairs Dr. Rodney Brenneman and Michele Brenneman in a celebration of Brittany’s Hope’s work for at-risk children. This fundraising event will include a plated dinner, a live auction and appeal, a silent auction and dancing, with music provided by the Central City Orchestra. Founded in 1999 and based in Elizabethtown, Brittany’s Hope seeks to empower families and communities to make real and lasting change in the lives of abandoned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. One hundred percent of every donation directly benefits the children in its programs. More information and business sponsorship opportunities can be found at www.brittanyshope.org.

our church who moved away, and she gave us a lot of music.” Hershey explained that she enjoys giving people the opportunity to pick up a book for a bargain. “If somebody asks me, ‘Do you have such and such?’ I love to be able to find it for them or match them with their favorite author, since I see all the books as they come in,” she stated. “My goal is to get a book into the hands of everyone who comes to the sale.” Sharp noted that it’s important to the church members to support a local organization like Mount Joy Helping Services through the rummage sale. The organization operates a food bank and a furniture bank and provides financial assistance to those in need. Visitors to the sale should park behind the church and use the rear doors to enter. The sale will accept cash or checks only.

The group hopes to hold fundraisers in the future, including a spring 5K. Roering knows firsthand how important a venue like The Market at Mount Joy can be for small business owners. but only some are hereditary. In Mason’s case, Duchenne is the result of a spontaneous mutation in the genes. Mason has trouble navigating stairs, is prone to falling and has difficulty with fine-motor tasks like writing. But, his mother said, there is hope. “We’ve been involved with clinical trials and gene therapy,” she stated, “and once a week he’s been getting an IV infusion that’s helping his body to make a little bit of the protein that he’s missing. That has made a dramatic difference for him, so that’s hopeful.” Inspired to focus on that hope, earlier this year the Kellers founded Love Gives, a nonprofit with a mission of helping children like Mason. The organization will host the second annual Mason Keller Golf Tournament and Silent Auction on Friday, Sept. 17, at Cool Creek Golf Club in Wrightsville. Last year, the Kellers fundraised through the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, but now their efforts will support their own nonprofit, which focuses specifically on local families. Proceeds from the tournament will help make improve-

ments to Susquehanna Waldorf School in Marietta, where Mason, now 8, attends as a second grader. The school is in a building built in 1899 that, although it’s a historical gem for Marietta, needs accessibility updates to accommodate children like Mason. “The first order of business is getting two stair lifts for the main stairway,” Rebecca explained, adding that eventually stairs to the lower level and the main entrance will also need stair lifts. Each stair lift costs between $3,000 and $4,000. Another goal is to modify the school’s bathrooms, which are on the smaller side and therefore difficult to navigate with a walker or scooter. Rebecca hopes that their efforts at Susquehanna Waldorf School will benefit other students in the future and that Love Gives can help families throughout central Pennsylvania. The organization is planning a running-focused fundraiser for the spring as well. When he’s not in school, Mason loves playing with remote-controlled cars and Legos, and he enjoys fishing with his father. “He’s very

close to his sister, who helps him when he needs things,” Rebecca said of Katie, who is in first grade at Susquehanna Waldorf School. “They have a lot of fun together.” Rebecca noted that learning her son had Duchenne was a difficult experience, but she likes to focus on the positive. “Having this diagnosis real-

ly gives you a great deal of humility,” she stated. “It helps you see how much love and support there really is in the community, and that’s encouraging because some days can be really hard.” For more information on Love Gives or to register for the golf tournament, visit www.ourlovegives.org.

Gearing Up For A New School Year BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Among the many challenges of the past year, one stands out for Wendy Musser, director of GEARS Kids Center. “It has been really tough trying to get to know all of our families and children, because I couldn’t meet the parents right away,” said Musser, who came on board as director in February. “Now things are starting to get back

to normal, and I’ve been able to meet a lot more people.” GEARS Kids Center is a nonprofit child care center that provides preschool programs for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds as well as kindergarten enrichment programs and before- and after-school care at several sites in Elizabethtown. The center serves families in West Donegal Township, Mount Joy Borough and Elizabethtown Borough. See GEARS pg 9

I had to earn the staff’s trust. I’ve been looking at their strengths and finding ways to empower them.” For more information on the GEARS Kids Center, visit www.gearskids.org.

Musser, who worked for 14 years in corporate child care, said coming to GEARS was just what she needed. “I was really looking for a change, and it’s been wonderful to be here,” she stated. “Our staff is so invested in the work that we do here. They really are child focused. They are truly here for the right reasons. They want to help, and they want to see these children succeed.” Musser said one of her favorite parts of the job has been collaborating with First 10, a program that prepares early learners with the skills they need to succeed in school. “We have been working on how we can help families with education at home, whether it’s reading a story together or doing simple mathematics or making healthy choices for food,” she explained. “We’re working on whatever we can do to build early literacy.” Musser said coming to GEARS not only gave her an opportunity to continue the work she loves, but also reinforced her belief in community support. “I have always been very active in my church and giving back to the community,” she said. “When I
