o you have what it takes to make a difference in the life of a homeless teen? That’s the question Christina Helfrick is asking as she launches the Champions for Teens Program at Donegal High School. Helfrick, a school social worker, created a pilot program last school year, matching three homeless students with “champions,” or advocates, in the community. “It was a great start,” she said. “This year, we’re trying to have 10 kids matched in the program at the beginning of the school year and then add another 10 by the end of the year.” Helfrick will host an information session about the program via Zoom on Thursday, Sept. 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. The session will cover an overview of the program, what’s expected of participants and next steps for volunteers. Andi Riefenstahl was one of those volunteers last year, and she plans to sign up again with a new teen. “I went to high school here,
put the child in the center and focus on what the child wants and needs,” she explained. Andi pointed out that it took time to develop a rapport with her student, but the effort paid off. “We had to figure out a way to build trust,” she said. In fact, Andi was so moved by her experience, she was prompted to start Friends of Donegal, which hopes to be a one-stop shop to help close the gaps between needs and services in the community. Helfrick said she sees great things in store for the Champions program, and she urges anyone with an interest in making a difference to sign up for the information session. “These are kids who are currently in survival mode,” she stated. “This program is about adding people to their support team. The word “Kiwanis” comes from a Native American expression meaning “we make a noise,” but for the members of the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems, the “K” could stand for “kids.” “This is an organization that’s very focused on the children and very family focused,” said Scott McCabe, incoming president of the club. “It’s all about the kids.” The club, which draws members from the greater Donegal School District area as well as Manheim,

and my family is all from this area,” she said, noting that her husband, Bruce, suggested they sign up to be champions. “I was looking to give something back to the community, especially once I realized there were so many children in need.” Although homelessness occurs throughout the Donegal School District, the program will focus on high school students. “For youths who are homeless in high school, these are complex years,” Helfrick stated. “They’re dealing with things like, how do you get a driver’s license? How do you fill out a job application? How do you find an apartment to live in after you graduate? How do you navigate life after high school?” Having a pilot program this past year helped Helfrick fine-tune the details and make changes to better serve both students and champions. “I developed a screener that helps me assess quality volunteers and match them with the kids,” she said. The screener looks for characteristics such as empathy, flexibility, persistence, active listening and willingness to be an advocate. “We’re looking for people who can

Shelby had been a special education teacher for 15 years when the pandemic brought everything to a halt. “I was an independent contractor, so I was going into people’s homes, and I couldn’t do that anymore,” she explained. With a thennewborn son at home, along with a 6-year-old son and Nevaeh, Shelby reevaluated what she wanted to do with her life. Inspiration struck just by looking around her home. “Every single window in my house had a plant in it,” she said, noting that she also enjoyed planting and landscaping outside her home. “It was like a jungle in here at one point.” She met a woman who sold succulents and soon realized she could do the same.

CAP Cadets Receive Promotions, Awards During its first in-person meeting in 16 months, held on July 12, the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) promoted seven cadets and handed out awards. The squadron meets each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets Hangar at Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Squadron commander

In less than a week, the team completed a full kitchen installation, repaired a well house, installed soffit vents and adjusted ridge roofing vents, trimmed out two bathrooms, installed fiberglass paneling, and renovated multiple student rooms. FIA has an additional trip planned to continue these efforts from Sunday to Saturday, Sept. 12 to 18. Volunteers have also served through various projects offered at FIA’s Middletown headquarters. Tradespeople have recently been making repairs on a barn located on the grounds, installing an entrance sign at the front of the property, repainting exterior doors, performing mechanical work, and trimming trees. said. “You can feel like you’re making a difference locally.” Judy Kay Bard noted that the club has members who have varying lengths of service. “Several of us just joined this group in the last few years, so it’s an evolving group,” she explained. “We’re always looking for new members.” Eberly said the club meets twice a month, but members do not need to commit to regular attendance. “We’re looking for people to join us in our mission, but I like to say, ‘A meeting is fine, but service is better,’” she remarked, adding that volunteers can help as their schedules allow.

The group sponsors Key Club at Donegal High School, and Key Club members have helped with weeding at Old Standby Park, bell ringing for the Salvation Army and other projects. “We are supporting students to become service leaders in the community,” noted Linda Eberly, current club president. Like many service organizations, the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems is seeking new members, Eberly said, noting that the organization provides opportunities for fun and fellowship while giving back to the community. For Diane Rorabaugh, a retired teacher, the club provided a way to continue to connect with youths. “I missed the kids,” she said. “I love working with and doing things for kids, and I can do that with this club.” John Gish has been a member of the club for 18 years and encouraged newcomers to join as a way to learn more about their neighbors. “It’s a good way to get to know the community,” he

“We focus on succulents, but in arrangements,” she stated, adding that Nevaeh picks out the pots for the plants. Shelby’s fiancé, Andy, built an indoor greenhouse for the plants, and Shelby launched a Facebook group in November of 2020 to showcase her inventory. As the business grew, Shelby and Nevaeh were learning new things every day, from how to water the plants to how to manage money. “We’re getting really good at propagating,” Nevaeh said. “It’s a way to grow roots from cuttings or make little baby plants.”

Shelby and Nevaeh deliver plants to customers and are also exploring the idea of having a mobile bus or truck selling plants. Shelby credits the success of the business to the ease of growing succulents. “People who can’t grow plants can grow succulents,” she explained. “It’s made a lot of plant moms out of people who didn’t think they could be one.” W hile the business has provided Shelby with a new career, it has also allowed her to spend precious time with her daughter. “This business has shown me who she is as a person. Well, it won’t exactly be a visit, but there will be a virtual watch party. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 9, Christian Business Fellowship and Mission Church will co-host a watch party for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences: “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and “Faith Driven Inventors.” The mission of Faith Driven Movements is to inspire, educate, and mobilize people to use their time, talents, and other resources in the marketplace. Faith Driven Movements brings together leaders from around the world who seek to make a financial, social, environ-
mental, and spiritual impact through their business ventures. Last year, Faith Driven Movements held its first global, virtual conference. The first day was catered to entrepreneurs and the second to investors. The same two-day format will be used this year. Watch parties in Lancaster County for Faith Driven Movements’ two virtual conferences will be held at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. On both Sept. 8 and Sept. 9, registration will open at 11 a.m. and the event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided both days, and the conference will conclude at 5 p.m. “The price to attend is kept very reasonable,” said Jeff Hostetter, member of
Mission Church and Christian Business Fellowship. “People can come to one day or they get a combo ticket to attend both.” There will be 31 virtual speakers at “Faith Driven Entrepreneur Live” and 33 at “Faith Driven Inventors Live.” Among them will be Tim Keller, Cathie Wood, and Donald Miller. Keller is the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, chairman of Redeemer City to City, founder of The Gospel Coalition, and author of “The Reason for God.” Wood is a star stock-picker and founder of ARK Invest, which invests in innovations like self-driving cars and genomics. Miller is the CEO of StoryBrand and author of
“Building a StoryBrand,” “Blue Like Jazz,” and more. “This is a great way to gather, feel connected, meet someone new, and build relationships,” stated Hostetter. “In addition to the relationships, the teaching will be really high-quality. CAP Cadets from pg 4 Aaron Keohane and Slater Shannon were each promoted to cadet airman first class and presented with the Hap Arnold Achievement Ribbon, to be worn on their dress blue uniform. This was their second promotion. Five cadets, who are relatively new to the program, received the Curry Achievement Ribbon and their first promotion, to cadet airman. They are Jereco Acosta, Dean Garber, Gretchen Garber, Lucas Horst and Dhruvan Sundaram. CAP cadets are active in the emergency services and aerospace education missions assigned to them by the U.S. Air Force.
Additionally, they participate in an annual weeklong encampment on a military installation, receive orientation flights in CAP corporate aircraft and are eligible for scholarships. Recipients of the General Billy Mitchell Award who enlist in the Air Force receive an initial rank of E-3. Cadet membership is limited to individuals ages 12 to 18. The videos are free to access and are designed specifically for direct care workers and family caregivers. The new videos, made possible through funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, are intended to help caregivers build their skills in caring for home-based consumers. The topics are “Easy and Healthy Meal Tips for Caregivers,” “CPR for
