When people look around the room at Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) in Mount Joy, they might see art supplies, books, yoga mats, free clothing or just places to sit and relax.
This summer, teams of teens took to the streets on bikes as part of Lifecycles, a Christian-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. Five teams participated in Summer Challenge Rides, which took them on trips ranging from six to 14 days long.

tive, Emminger has been able to transform the space into an even more welcoming spot. Since mid-June, she’s been busy putting the funds to use purchasing new furniture, laptops and a laptop cart, upgraded art supplies and more. “All of the furniture we had before was donated,” she stated. “It was wonderful, and I was very appreciative of it, but this was an opportunity to get new stuff, to make more efficient use of the space.” Storage bins now keep hygiene supplies organized, while a doorbell lets Emminger know if someone has come in.
Clothing is now organized not just by items for men or women, but also by size and style. “Before, everything was sort of scattered around the room, and now there is a place for everything,” Emminger explained. “It feels like I have doubled my space.”
Beyerlein. R087793
Cindy Beyerlein, acting director, said the school is a natural fit for the church because it will further the church’s mission of community interaction. “We were looking for opportunities to expand into the community,” she stated. “We wanted to increase our outreach and find new ways to connect with the community.” Plans began for the preschool in January, and Emmy Brenner was hired as the lead teacher. She’ll be joined in the classroom by assistant teacher Kathleen Geigley, along with church volunteers. Beyerlein noted that the teacher-to-student ratio will be 1 to 10. Brenner brings with her more than 15 years of experience as a preschool teacher, including working at Head Start. She describes the Chiques PreK curriculum as academic-focused, with an emphasis on creativity.
Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA, sees something more. “I want this place to have the feel of walking into someone’s living room,” she said. “I want people to feel at home here.”

BY CATHY MOLITORIS “ECHOS strives to actively prevent homelessness, or at least make experiences of it brief and non-recurring,” said Natalie Dixon, development director of ECHOS. To help support its mission, the organization will hold its second annual ECHOS of Hope Gala on Thursday, Sept. 22. The event will take place from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane,“TheElizabethtown.eveningbegins with a cocktail hour and silent auction,” Dixon explained. “Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and individuals, we will be auctioning off a wide variety of items.” Auction items include eight vacation packages for domestic and international trips, provided by AmFund; a variety of experiences such as a charcuterie class or photography session; gift baskets; and more. Guests will be invited to enjoy the FX Photo Booth during the cocktail hour as well. New this year, the gala will also feature a special event called Champagne & Diamonds. “We will have 100 champagne glasses available for purchase during the cocktail hour,” Dixon remarked. “Ninety-nine of the glasses will hold cubic zirconia, and one will have a real diamond. A qualified jeweler will be onhand to inspect the gems and find the lucky winner of the real diamond. The winner will be announced later in the evening and will be able to exchange their diamond for a piece of jewelry valued at $2,500 to $3,000, generously donated by Andrew Douglas Jewelers.”
The evening will also include a dinner hour with a buffet catered by Food for Thought Catering, an open bar sponsored by Funk Brewing, a short program and dancing, Dixon said. Funds raised at the gala directly support families and individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the greater Elizabethtown area, which includes the northwest region of Lancaster County, she noted. “The gala’s fundraising efforts help support the Elizabethtown Emergency Shelter, Enrichment Center, supportive housing programs, eviction prevention and the Crisis Response Counseling Program at the Elizabethtown Area Middle and High schools, as well as additional programs and services offered by ECHOS,” Dixon commented. She noted that the gala would not be possible without the support of sponsors including Legacy Maker Sponsor Stone Gables Estate, Dream Maker Sponsor DDMP and other contributing sponsors.“Thisis a unique event that is made possible by the generous and continued support from our community,” Dixon stated. “This support will allow us to continue offering free services to individuals and families in our community who are directly affected by the housing crisis.” The deadline for purchasing tickets is Friday, Sept. 9. There will also be a focus on social-emotional development of students, Brenner said. Students will also take field trips and will be treated to guest speakers and readers from the community. “I’m hoping to bring in someone from the police department as well as other community groups,” Brenner noted. We also had enough leaders willing to sacrifice a week of their time to do this.” In total, the five rides included 42 teens and 30 adult leaders. One girls’ team and two boys’ teams participated in weeklong 300mile rides from Jersey Shore, Pa., to Niagara Falls. On those rides, participants passed by the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal Historic Trail. Additionally, one boys’ team rode 330 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The fifth ride was the longest, featuring a boys’ team that rode 825 miles over two weeks from Niagara Falls to Lubec, Maine. “They went to the Eastern-most point in the United States,” Lee noted. “They were the first people in the country to see the sunrise thatLee,morning.”whocreated Lifecycles in 2015, said he’s continually impressed with the dedication and drive of the riders. “I know how hard some of them had to push in order to finish,” he stated. “Not one boy or girl quit. Everybody rode every single mile.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, created Lifecycles to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. From April through August, boys’ and girls’ teams ride one night a week throughout Lancaster County. Although the season is wrapping up, the teams will continue with five weekend rides through October. The organization currently serves 130 teens in what Lee calls “overflowing” teams. “We want our teams to be large enough to provide a sense of community, but small enough to keep it safe and manageable,” he stated. He hopes to be able to increase the number of teams next year but noted that more leaders will be needed to do that. “We’ve been very blessed by more leaders joining us this year, and we’re going to need even more to continue,” he remarked, adding that’s he’s confident the right people will step up. “We live in an area where people really want to give back to their community.”

Both lunch and dinner will also be available to purchase later in the day. Multiple specialty auctions will begin following breakfast, held simultaneously throughout the day in five separate buildings. The auctions will not be limited to one category; the event will include auctions for tools, gift baskets, gently used items, handmade quilts and sports memorabilia, to name only a few. “You can find anything you could possibly think of,” said Lewis. “If you aren’t interested in an auction, you can just pop into the next building and find so

The annual Labor Day Auction will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 101 Park Ave., Quarryville. The rain-or-shine event, which has been held for the past 38 years at various locations, will benefit Hospice & Community Care. Admission and parking will be free. Both days of the auction will begin with food that is made from scratch and sold by members of the Amish community. Handmade doughnuts, sticky buns, pretzel logs and more will be provided by multiple local families as a way to give back to Hospice & Community Care for the services it offers the area. “Hospice cares for several Amish community members. Patients and their families are able to stay at home and dictate the care they want,” said Amy Lewis, director of philanthropy for Hospice & Community Care. “It’s very significant the Amish community can help us in that way. The campaign is divided into three primary goals: restore, protect and educate. Seven million dollars of the funds raised will be allocated for restoring the thousands of acres acquired by Lancaster Conservancy, as it continues its work to balance the needs of the habitat with the demands of visitors. “Some of these trails are loved to death, with worn infrastructure and parking lots that don’t have enough room for visitors,” said Schroeder. “We want to maintain these areas long-term and make sure they can accommodate the many people who enjoy them.”
Half of the money raised for this goal will be invested in projects to restore biodiversity, water quality and ecosystems; the other half will be applied to the stewardship endowment for future preservation of the land.
In May 2022, Lancaster Conservancy unveiled a $21 million campaign for the protection and restoration of nature in Lancaster County. It is the first major, multi-year initiative in the organization, which has operated for over 50 years. As of this past spring, over $17 million had been raised for the cause; $4.5 million was pledged by the board of directors and the rest stemmed from the major contributions of over 70 communityLancastermembers.Conservancy is an accredited land trust that was founded in 1969 by local naturalists, fishers, hunters and farmers to acquire and protect natural lands. Over the course of its existence, more than 8,000 acres have been acquired, and they are protected and maintained to this day.
The campaign will allow a more proactive approach to be taken, with funds already allotted once land becomes available.

Eleven million dollars will be used to protect 10,000 acres by the year 2030, which is twice the amount of land preserved up until 2015. Funds are needed for acquisition costs for land in both Lancaster and along the Susquehanna that is rising in cost faster than inflation. The conservancy often struggled to raise the money needed to purchase land in time, as it can be bought within days once for sale.

The final $3 million raised from the initiative will be applied to the education of over 10,000 community members, primarily through the Climbers Run Nature Center.
The nature center sits on 113 acres of land, located along Frogtown Road in Pequea, and serves to educate students, families, hikers and volunteers. The center includes hands-on learning activities that offer immersive insight on the natural world, accomplished in partnership with area schools, Scout troops and education organizations. The funds raised from this portion of the goal will be used to improve the nature center by adding outdoor classrooms and two pedestrian bridges and modernizing facility.
