Showcasing Maytown’s Homes and Gardens

Peek inside the homes and into the backyards of properties in Maytown, all to benefit the Maytown Historical Society.

The Maytown Historical Society will host a Maytown House, Patio, Yard and Garden Tour on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour locations are all in the Maytown area and are within driving or walking distance from the museum, located at 4 W. High St.

The event will also feature a meal fundraiser available at the museum with pulled pork barbecue, a baked potato, applesauce, a cookie, a drink and a roll. It will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When people hit the links for the 14th annual Homecoming Golf Tournament, they’ll be doing more than just playing a game. They’ll help raise funds for the Donegal Atheltic Club (DAC), a grassroots organization formed to provide financial support for the Donegal School District athletic community.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Registration for the event, which is a scramble format, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

There are seven stops on the tour.

and Sandy Miller will be one of the stops. “One of the original log homes of Maytown, this house has been restored, including the exposing of some of the original logs,” Good said, noting that the

“This event is our major fundraiser year to year,” said Scott Madara, member of the DAC board of directors.

He noted that the tournament draws many repeat players year after year, along with new participants.

“The outing is a great time at a very reasonable price,” he shared. “We provide lunch, dinner, all the beverages and snacks and great prizes.”

The major food sponsor of the tournament is Harvey’s Main Street BBQ. Madara noted that many other individuals and organizations also sponsor the tournament to keep costs low and help to raise the most funds possible for the DAC.

“Funds are provided to support all sports for needs that are not covered in the district’s athletic budget,” he explained. All contributions go toward facilitating the promotion and development of Donegal athletes.

Founded in 2009, DAC operates independently of the Donegal

School District while collaborating closely with the school board to advance the district’s goals. Its vision is to build a secure, sustainable foundation that benefits generations of students, Donegal schools and the community. Volunteers work to ensure that every student has the opportunity to gain lifelong skills through athletics, while also providing financial support that allows the district to continue strengthening academics, the arts and other programs. In addition, DAC strives to create community-wide opportunities for recreation, fitness and sports that enhance the quality of life and overall appeal of the community.

Accomplishments of DAC include securing $1 million to offset costs of the new athletic complex; contributing $50,000 for lights in the stadium; purchasing a new scoreboard for the softball field; adding new mats in the gym room, which are also used by the wrestling team; purchasing a clock for the cross-country teams; and adding a windscreen to the baseball field

The organization is

always seeking volunteers to help bolster membership, projects, committees, activities, events and fundraisers for DAC. To learn more, contact Madara at samadara8583@gmail.com.

Madara hopes people will come out for a fun day of golf and an opportunity to support Donegal athletes.

“It’s one of the best golf tournaments in the area for a good cause,” he said.

The deadline to register for the tournament is Monday, Sept. 1. For more information or to register, visit https://donegal athleticclub.org.

Last year, the event was called the “55 & Up Expo,” but organizers lowered the age to 50 specifically to broaden participation and better reflect the many programs, services and activities available to residents starting at that age, Ogilvie shared.

“The expo will feature a wide range of returning vendors, including Masonic Village, Elizabethtown Area Senior Center and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging - PACE Program,” she said.

“This year we are excited to welcome several new participants, including ClearCaptions, Visiting Angels, Traditions of Hershey and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA). These are just a few of the new vendors joining the expo this year, offering even more resources and services for attendees to explore.”

Complimentary refreshments, including coffee and light snacks, will be available throughout the event for attendees, and many vendors have provided door prizes, which will be drawn throughout the day and include gift baskets, gift cards and other items.

“Attendees must be present to win the regular door prizes,” Ogilvie explained. “A passport card will also be available for attendees to get signed by each vendor; completed cards will be entered into the final door prize drawing. The winner of the final door prize

Rep. Jones serves approximately 67,000 residents in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. His area, the 98th legislative district, includes all of the Elizabethtown Area and Donegal school districts.

Along with the expo, Jones holds Coffee & Conversation events throughout the year. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 11, from 9 to 10 a.m. at his office, 222 S. Market St., Suite 103, Elizabethtown.

Ogilvie encourages people to come to the expo to find resources and information.

“Attendees can expect a welcoming environment with nearly 30 vendors, free health screenings, giveaways, refreshments and opportunities to connect with local service providers,” she said. “The expo provides the community with in-person opportunities to interact with government agencies, ask questions and access resources directly. It is open to anyone who wants resources for themselves or for family members. Whether you’re looking for health care resources, home services or community engagement activities, there’s something for everyone.”

The 50 & Up Expo is free to attend. People should park in the lot behind the church and enter from the back of the building, following the posted signs. Ramp access is provided for easy entry.

The house of Mark and Deb Hinkel and the garden of Rich and Cheri Bach will also be on the tour.

Good described the Hinkel home as a “Colonial-style house built in 1890, decorated with Colonial-style furnishings.”

It features original floors in some rooms and an

The Bachs’ garden was originally a cornfield and is now a vibrant combination of an English and an Italian garden in four sections.

It features a large dove house in the middle of the garden which was copied from the Wythe House in Williamsburg.

Training Will Prepare Volunteers to Aid Children

If you feel called to help others, especially children, the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren invites you to participate in a unique volunteer training event.

The church, located at 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, will host a Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) Volunteer Training from 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, through 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.

“The CDS training program is a 25-hour overnight training that equips volunteers with the skills needed to understand and respond to children who have encountered both human-caused and natural disasters,” explained Sandra Brubaker, witness commission and local coordinator of the training. “Training includes setup and operation, safety procedures, selfcare on-site and after returning home and a shelter simulation. The training will also include types of disasters, children and their needs after a disaster, how to respond in a healing manner and using play to begin emotional recovery.”

Participants will sleep on cots loaned to the church through the local chapter

simply and together.”

A registration fee for the training will cover materials and trainer costs. Meals and overnight accommodations will be provided by the church. There is a discount for registering for the training before Friday, Sept. 26. There is also a reduced fee for students age 18 and older.

of the American Red Cross, simulating the environment disaster relief volunteers would encounter in real life.

“The trainees will be taught how to set up the cots that will be in the fellowship hall for the overnight stay,” Brubaker said.

Children’s Disaster Services is a program administered by Brethren Disaster Ministries, she shared, noting that it provides a safe environment and comforting presence for children impacted by traumatic events.

“Since 1980, there have been 339 disasters where 3,935 volunteers worked with 120,881 children,” she said. “Children’s Disaster Services, so far in 2025, has served in four states in 11 locations caring for

736 children. Examples of places that have been served are: Los Angeles wildfires, Missouri tornadoes, Texas floods and the terrorist attack in New Orleans.”

CDS has a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Red Cross to serve in shelters or assistance centers, and at times, volunteers are also called to serve with FEMA or local/ state emergency management agencies.

As Brubaker explained, Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren was asked to host this training weekend by CDS. She noted that there has not been a training weekend on the East Coast in several years, and that this is the first time the Elizabethtown church will host this event.

“This is an excellent way to serve the church by helping people and especially children during very difficult circumstances,” she shared, adding that serving provides a close-up view of disaster and the reality that impacts the victims of the disaster.

“(It’s about) giving of one’s self by following the Scripture of loving your neighbor whether they are near or far.”

The training is open to people age 18 and older.

“This event can bring many people together from our local community and people from other states that wish to train for this meaningful service,” Brubaker remarked. “This is also an opportunity to share our own congregation with others, introducing them to what our denomination and congregation seek: to live the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ, peacefully,

A list of articles participants need to bring with them to the training will be provided on the registration form. Transportation may also be arranged to the church from the Harrisburg International Airport, if needed.

For more information or to register for the training, visit www.brethren.org/cds.
