hey may have a few more bir thd ays behind them than the typical cast of a Broadway musical, but the Juniper Perennial Players proved you’re never too old to take center stage. When residents of Juniper Village
at Mount Joy performed “Sister Act Sr.” earlier this month, their decades of life experience came together with plenty of music, laughter and theatrical flair. The nine-member cast, made up of people in their 70s, 80s and 90s, performed the musical at On Main Event Venue, 732 W. Main St.,
on Aug. 7 and 8. While some had acting experience, for others, the production offered a chance to try something new. The show was part of Music Theatre International’s (MTI) Broadway Senior program, which gives adults age 55 and up the opportunity to produce and perform musical See Stage pg 3

On Wednesday evenings, children gather at Mount Joy Church of God to have fun, make friends and grow in their faith as part of an Awana club. The club, open to potty-trained 3-year-olds through sixth-graders, meets from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at the church, 30 E. Main St. The next session will kick off on Sept. 9. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for kids to gather and have fun while learning the Bible,” said senior pastor Richard Vaughn. If you’re an older adult, mark your calendar for Tuesday, Sept. 15. State Rep. Tom Jones will host the fourth annual 50 & Up Expo from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. “The free expo will feature more than 35 vendors and government agencies offering information, resources and services for adults age 50 and up, caregivers and family members,” said Sharon Ogilvie, legislative aide and outreach and event coordinator for Jones. “The exhibitors represent a wide range of services and resources, including health care and wellness, financial and retirement planning, senior living and in-home care, veterans’ services, government programs, legal and estate planning, lifelong learning, hospice and end-of-life services, home improvement, tourism and local community resources.” The event is meant to be interactive, she said. “Attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly with representatives, ask questions and learn about programs and services available to them and their families,” she explained. “Rep. Jones’ office will also have a legislative information table where constituents can stop by to ask questions or learn more about state government services and programs.” A variety of door prizes will also be awarded. Gretna Music has announced the final concerts of its 2026 summer season, taking place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. In addition to mainstage performances and special events, the schedule includes 20-minute First Listen concerts featuring local high school and college-age students. First Listen performances are free of charge and occur before mainstage performances. Unless otherwise noted, all other events have a fee, and tickets may be purchased at www.gretna music.org. One-hour Well-Being Concerts will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at noon and 7 p.m. Pianist Mathis Picard and heart meditation specialist and wellness practitioner Leslie Bures will lead immersive experiences blending live music with mindfulness. Gretna Music Posts Schedule were created in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. Event to Focus on Overdose Awareness and Grief In observance of International Overdose Awareness Day, the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, a program of Hospice & Community Care, will host “Let’s Talk About Grief ” on Monday, Aug. 31. The program will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pathways Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, Mount Joy. I n t e r n at i o n a l O ve rd o s e Awareness Day is an annual campaign to remember those who have died from overdose, reduce stigma surrounding substance use disorder, and recognize the lasting grief experienced by families and friends left behind. This year’s event at the Pathways Center will feature keynote speaker Laura Hatton, who will share her family’s experience following the death of her daughter, Kat Spidle,
from an overdose. Hatton will discuss the impact of addiction on her family, the challenges of grief, and the ways her family continues to find healing. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. To register, visit www.hospicecom munity.org/oad or call the Pathways Center at 717-391-2413. The Pathways Center for Grief & Loss is a free community resource available to anyone coping with serious illness, death, or loss, regardless of whether their loved one received hospice care. Professionally trained, master’s-level counselors provide individual counseling and support groups for people of all ages. Services are offered at no cost through the support of the community.
Director Alicia Hill noted that the cast began rehearsing at least three times a week in mid-May. “I’ve seen their confidence grow throughout the process,” she said. “They’re so happy and excited to be onstage, and it gives them something to look forward to. It’s so important to keep the residents connected to music and the arts and the community.” Volunteer Ruth Sweigart, herself a senior, served as the production’s accompanist, and other team members included Sharon Schlenk, Sharon Miller, Davina Lopez and Renee Lentz. Juniper Communities played a role in piloting Broadway Senior nationally, creating opportunities for residents across the country to participate in meaningful creative and social experiences. The first show was held at the community’s State College location in 2018, said Katie Kensinger, Juniper Communities’ director of marketing. Broadway Senior shows ad apt classic musicals into shortened, accessible 60-minute productions specifically tailored to older adults. Juniper Communities has partnered with MTI to pilot and shape this program, helping adjust materials for performers with var ying mobility,

The program has since expanded internationally. “ This is positive risk taking in a group setting,” Kensinger said of the productions, which she noted h av e b e n e f i t s b e y o n d indulging residents’ creative sides. “People say they don’t feel pain when they’re performing. They forget about their problems, and they get to step outside of their comfort zone in a positive way.” This was Hill’s first time directing a show with Juniper Village, and she’s already looking forward to next year. “It does take a lot of work to pull this off,” she said. “But the joy that comes from this program makes it all so worth it, times a hundred.”

For S haffer, a ge 79, performing in the show marked a return to the stage after she appeared in last year’s production of “Singin’ in the Rain.” “I really enjoyed performing last year, so I wanted to try it again,” she said. “I loved being with all the cast members, and we really grow together through the experience.”

Delor is Van Cartier, a nightclub singer, witnesses her gangster boyfriend commit murder and must go into witness protection. She ends up among the nuns at a local convent, where she soon leads the choir in rediscovering both their love of music and their joy for life. Carol Buckenmeyer played the role of Deloris. The former music teacher enjoyed her first role with the Junip er Perenni al Players. “I like to perform,” said the 81-year-old. “I really enjoyed this show, and I enjoyed working with the cast. It’s good to have something to do and something fun to focus on. It’s really good for your mood.” Buckenmeyer was joined on stage by Carol Kase, who played Mother Superior. “ Who would have thought that at the age of 85 years I would be experiencing a new adventure,” she wrote in her cast bio in the show’s program. “Being a cast member in ‘Sister Act Sr.’ has been fun and exciting. A s back- to- school season gets under way and we prepare for cooler weather, it’s the perfect time to restock your closet and refresh your wardrobe. Thanks to Ruhl’s Church, you can do this without opening your wallet. The church will host God’s Clothing Closet on Friday, Aug. 28, and Saturday, Aug. 29. Hours on Friday are by appointment at 5:30, 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. No appointment is needed for Saturday shopping, which will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. “Free clothing, accessories, shoes, coats, linens, housewares, games, etc., will all be available for shoppers,” said Kris Gray, who organizes the event with Barb Dunmire. “Ever yone is welcome to come shop for some ‘new-to-you’ clothes and accessories.” This is the 26th year for the event, which began after organizers shifted a church outreach to meet local needs. The church used to send clothing to a mission out of state, but it was expensive to ship the items, and organizers thought they could make a bigger impact in Manheim. Over the years, they have tweaked the event to provide the best shopping experience for guests. “ B e fo re w e o f fe re d appointments, the event on Saturday was ver y crowded with enthusiastic shoppers,” Gray said. “Now, since several hundred people shop on Friday, the Saturday event is not crowded, and it is quite easy to shop. And we will still have lots of
quality men’s and ladies’ clothing available on Saturday.” God’s Clothing Closet will feature something for everyone, Dunmire said, adding, “There are always a lot of ladies’ clothing and accessories to give away, from gowns to sleepwear and suits to activewear. We even have a good selection of ladies’ and men’s 2X and larger clothing.” She noted that some items go very quickly. “If you need children’s clothing, it would be a good idea to make an appointment for Friday evening,” Dunmire said. “We often run low on children’s clothing by the end of the event.” Clothing comes from the community and members of the congregation. “Some of the clothing and other items at the event are donated by Nearly Nu in Manheim when they change over their store for spring and fall,” Dunmire explained. A lthoug h the event focuses on clothing, shoppers can peruse a variety of additional items. “There will be new and gently used Bibles and devotional books available,” Gray shared. “There is a plethora of household items - dishes, utensils, glassware, lamps, craft supplies, toys, etc. - available on the porch, so you may shop for those items before you enter the building to shop for clothing.” She added that the organizers are intentional in what happens to anything that doesn’t go home with shoppers. “All items left after the event are donated to Jubilee in Manheim, so nothing goes to waste,” she said.
