Lions To Hold Golf Tourney
The Lions Club of Mount Joy will sponsor a golf tournament on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Highlands of Donegal Golf Club, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy. The public is invited to take part.
Play will begin at noon with a shotgun start and proceed in scramble format, rain or shine. Golfers should arrive no later than 11 a.m. to register. The cost for the tournament includes the green fee, use of a cart, dinner, use of the practice range, and prizes. Refreshments will be available in the pavilion and on the golf course during the round, and dinner will be served immediately at the Highlands of Donegal’s pavilion after golfing. Prizes will be awarded during dinner to two flights using the scramble format system. There will also be closest to the pin awards.
Golfers may register individually or in groups of two, three, or four. Singles and doubles will be paired with other golfers. Participation is limited to the first 120 golfers who register.
To register by Sunday, Sept. 5, contact club member Derek McCarty at 717-405-1881 or dmccarty72@gmail.com or contact any other member of the Mount Joy Lions Club. Payment must accompany registration, as should names and contact information of the golfers.
Further information about the golf tournament is available by contacting Carl Spellman at 201-841-9894 or carl spellman4@outlook.com.
In keeping with its motto, “We Serve,” the Lions Club of Mount Joy will return all proceeds from the tournament to the community through service projects and by supporting the work of many local organizations. Among them are the Mount Joy Lions Swim Team, MilanofSchock Library, the Mount Joy Food Bank, the East Donegal/Conoy Food Bank, Fire Department Mount Joy, VisionCorps, and Rainbow’s End Youth Services. Each year, the club presents monetary awards to the valedictorian at Donegal High School and to the highest-ranking Donegal student who graduates from the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.
In addition, the club collects clean, dry plastic bags, which are recycled into benches and placed in the community. The club also collects used eyeglasses to be recycled and supports Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind, which is owned and operated by the Lions Clubs of Pennsylvania. Four Diamonds, Mom’s House of Lancaster, Hugs for Brady, and Leader Dogs for the Blind also receive support from the club. Furthermore, the club supports initiatives of Lions Clubs International that serve people in need around the world.
The Lions Club of Mount Joy meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at The Gathering Place and is open to men and women interested in serving the local community and making a difference in the lives of people around the globe by contributing to the work of Lions Clubs International and the Lions Clubs International Foundation. Information on the local club is available by calling president Tim Markovits at 717-653-9107.

LDHL Provides Interest-Free Loans
Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interest-free loans to 257 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their post-secondary education for the 2021-22 school year. The recipients are applicants who demonstrated financial need.
The interest-free loans varied from $850 each for students attending one semester only to $1,700 each for students attending a full academic year. LDHL awarded loans to nine single-semester students and 248 full-year students. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at 82 colleges and universities across the country.
Since 1961, LDHL has partnered with donors each year to provide more than $18 million in interest-free loans to Lancaster County students seeking higher education. Loans are also made possible each year by the repayment of loans granted to previous recipients.
LDHL is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary education goals. By offering funds to Lancaster County students on an annual basis, LDHL hopes to lessen the long-term expense for postsecondary education and training. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org.
