E arlier this summer, Ron Carper was watching the news and he saw something that inspired him to take action. “Somebody had asked a question, ‘What can you do to help your community with gas prices being so high?’” he recalled. “One of the ideas someone suggested was to help out your local volunteer firemen. I noticed in the news that a lot of communities are doing this.”Carper, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Mount Joy, decided to spearhead a gas gift card collection for Fire Department Mount Joy. “I talked to the chief at the fire department, and I realized that with the number of volunteers they had and the funds our club had, we couldn’t do much by ourselves,” Carper said. So, he reached out to two other civic organizations - the Kiwanis Club of Norlanco-Rheems and the Mount Joy Lions Club - and asked if the groups would like to participate as well. “They were interested immediately,” Carper recalled, noting that Kiwanis member John Gish, Lion Harry Goehring and Rotarian Chris Silvestri also helped coordinate the project. All three groups pooled resources from their fundraising efforts throughout the year, and on Aug. 11, they presented a $50 gas gift card to each of the 45 members of Fire Department Mount Joy. Although the chief knew about the presentation, it was a surprise to the other volunteers. “They were really excited and very thankful,” Carper noted. “These guys are giving their time and money to do what they do to serve our community, and this was a nice way to give back to Carperthem.”said the Rotary Club of Mount Joy has worked with the other civic groups on projects in the past, and this most recent effort has motivated him to continue to collaborate. “We can help each other out,” he stated. “We can do more all together, working together, than we can by ourselves.”

yet). I have the Bible, my experiences, and my convictions.” Solodky’s path to Mount Zion has been long and sometimes dark. “I was led into the valley of the shadow of death,” he said. “My God, whom I love, had to break me to get me to understand the proper way to fill in the cracks (in my soul) that I believe we all have.”

Growing up in Manheim Township, Solodky became interested in emergency services when his sister was in an auto accident. He became a firefighter with the Eden station and took part in the first paramedic training program held at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, graduating in 2001. He served with emergency medical services in Strasburg, married his high school sweetheart, and had threeSolodkychildren.referred to his time as a paramedic as his “pre-Christian life.” “When I started relying on (God’s) understanding instead of my understanding, my life was completely transformed,” he explained. “I am still a sinner, but ... I am compelled to spread the Good News.” To reach out to those in need, Solodky became involved in a food ministry at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Neffsville. “I felt my ministry was to be help those people who were (struggling) as I once was,” he said. In 2015, he began working for Line Pro Inc. He and the owner of the company began attending group meetings held by local pastors who recognized Solodky’s gift for ministry. “(The pastors) kept saying, ‘You would be a good pastor. Why don’t you start the (training) process?’” Solodky recalled. He kept refusing, but in May, he was told of a small church about 45 minutes from his home in Mount Joy. “They said, ‘We think you would be a great fit.’” Solodky said no again, but he agreed to pray on the subject, and he met with the district superintendent of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the UMC. With approval from the conference and completed background checks, Solodky met with Mount Zion elders, who voted to accept him as Solodkypastor.plans to complete his schooling during an intensive UMC training program in early 2023. In addition to preaching, he has begun making house visits to church members. “I love what this church stands for,” he said, reading the Zion mission statement, which expresses the importance of knowing God and making Him known so church members can return God’s love as witnesses and followers. He has taken note of the wisdom of the congregants. “They have learned about who Jesus is and how He is working in their lives,” he said, adding that he has felt welcomed. “This church has thrown their arms around me and made me feel comfortable,” he shared. Mount Zion currently holds Sunday school at 9 a.m. and worship at 10:15 a.m. More information may be found at http://mzum church.net.

Shirk “We will be raising a 38-by-22foot flag by two cranes,” said Laukhuff. The flag ceremony will also include an honor guard of veterans from various branches of the military and the singing of the national anthem by a professional entertainer. Members of the honor guard will also perform a flag-folding ceremony following the tournament. The posttournament ceremony will include the playing of taps by a bugler. During the tournament, bagpipe music will be provided to enhance the Scottish atmosphere of the course, Laukhuff noted, adding, “We are bringing in a female Navy pilot who happens to play the bagpipes, and she’ll play for about an hour and a half.”Along the course, participants will have opportunities to win prizes at certain holes, with the awards sponsored by Dixon Golf. The tournament will also feature a box lunch for participants, along with heavy hors d’oeuvres, live acoustic music, a silent auction and door prizes. Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $38,000, and Laukhuff has set a lofty goal for this year. “We’re hoping to raise $50,000,” he said. “Last year’s tournament was very well received, and it couldn’t have gone any smoother. We’re going to make each year bigger and better.” Tournament sponsorships are from Lancaster Nissan, Lanco Federal Credit Union and Penlanco Federal Credit Union, with an in-kind gift from AAA Vacuum & Sewing Center. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information on sponsorships or to register a group of four for the tournament, visit www.ironleg.org or contact Laukhuff at sean@ironleg.org. The deadline for sponsorships and preregistration is Thursday, Sept. 1.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS Driving along Route 462 in Columbia, one sees a striking feature rise above the horizon. It’s the main gate of Glatfelter Memorial Field. “This is a landmark when you come into Columbia,” said Bill Kloidt, president of the Glatfelter board of directors. “It’s one of the first things you see when you’re on Lancaster Avenue, and it’s a neat sight to behold.” Now, the gate needs your help. Constructed 86 years ago, the structure is in need of repairs, and the Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust is in the midst of a solicitation drive to restore the entryway, located at 1249 Lancaster“We’veAve.been inspecting the structure over the last couple of years and doing patchwork repairs,” Kloidt said. “We noticed that it could soon fall into deeper disrepair and become a liability, so we knew we needed to do more.” Built in 1936, the brick entranceway has been structurally compromised by rain, snow and the expansion and contraction of ice that has seeped behind the walls. Large vertical and horizontal cracks, displacement of limestone panels and cracked and stained brick veneer are all visible and in need of repair. The restoration will also include the removal, powder coating and replacement of the six entranceway gates. In total, the board estimates the project will cost $82,000. As Kloidt emphasized, Glatfelter Memorial Field has a long history. It was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression, giving unemployed citizens an opportunity to get back to work. At that time, in addition to the main gate, a grandstand was constructed, and the grading of a football field, a baseball field and tennis courts was completed. Landscaping on the grounds included dwarf maple trees and large sycamore trees, many of which still stand today. When the facility was completed, it was dedicated to the memory of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was killed in a car accident during his first assignment at Fort Dix, N.J. His father, David L. Glatfelter, donated the land to memorialize his son. Over the years, the field has hosted Columbia’s semiprofessional football team in the 1960s and the closing ceremonies of both the 1938 Columbia Sesquicentennial Celebration and the 1988 Columbia Bicentennial Celebration. In September of 2002, the Trust planted trees in collaboration with the Columbia Shade Tree Commission to honor the first anniversary of 9/11. Today, the property includes five baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts that have been converted into a street hockey rink, a track and a pavilion. Since the early 1960s, the field has also served as the home of the Columbia Boys Athletic Association (CBAA), and Kloidt noted that the goal is to complete the repairs before the start of the CBAA football season this fall. He encourages anyone with ties to Columbia to consider supporting the restoration project. “So many people have shared great memories at that field,” he stated. “We’re asking for their support to preserve this lovely structure for many years to come.” For more information or to make a donation, contact Kloidt at 717-2015134 or wkloidt@aol.com. 30, 2022 – 1pm Real Estate Hershey Church Rd.
