T he members of Florin Church of the Brethren want to feed the communityboth physically and spiritually. They will hold a free Breakfast Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the church, 815 Bruce Ave. The meal will be served from 9 to 9:30 a.m., with devotional time from 9:30 to 10Accordinga.m. to Bob Price, event organizer, the Breakfast Bowl will serve many purposes. “People are hurting in a lot of different ways,” he said. “Lack of food is one problem. While this day won’t make a significant difference in the longterm, it can help that day. Lack of people to talk to is another problem. People are lonely. This is an opportunity for fellowship.”

BY CATHY MOLITORIS Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley proclaimed July 2022 as Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) Appreciation Month to mark the nonprofit’s 40th birthday on July 16. The recognition underscored everything the organization does for local youths.“Wereally embraced this idea of REYS Appreciation Month,” said Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS. “We spent the month sharing information and pictures of our history on social media and at events, encouraging people to learn more about us and to ask questions.” The organization participated in Mount Joy Community Night at the Lancaster Barnstormers, which happened to coincide with REYS’ birthday. “That was a great night and a great time to meet people in the community,” Paden noted. Nancy Shonk, who is a member of the church kitchen committee, said Florin Church has a reputation for its food ministry. It’s known in the community for serving homemade whoopie pies and hosting regular luncheons throughout the year. “The Breakfast Bowl is a way for us to expand on our food ministry,” Shonk noted. “It’s also an opportunity to connect people to resources in the community.” Past breakfasts have featured presentations by community organizations, the police department and other groups. Price remarked that previous breakfasts have averaged more than 140 people, and he hopes the restarted event will continue to grow as the church plans to host the Breakfast Bowl on the third Saturday of the month year-round. “The potential for the breakfast is tremendous,” he stated. “It’s about building relationships with people in our community. It’s about reaching people in need and helping them.”The community is invited to enter the church through the carport and double glass doors into the fellowship hall, where the breakfast will be served.

The church served the free community breakfast once a month for about three years before the pandemic paused the event in 2020. This month’s meal marks the return of the breakfast, with some modifications. The menu will include eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, muffins, fruit, juices and coffee. “We will have table hosts at each table to facilitate conversation and listen or pray if the other people would like,” Price said, noting that the table hosts are a direct result of surveys from past breakfast attendees. “We are hoping the table hosts will get feedback from the people they talk to so we can truly meet the needs of the people coming to the breakfast.”

As REYS looks to the future, the organization is focused on several goals, said Hannah Wheeler, program and communications coordinator. “Community outreach is something we’re working on,” she commented. “We’re going to more events and trying to get out where people are rather than relying on people coming to us.” She added that the organization encourages groups to invite REYS staff to come to meetings to speak about the nonprofit’s mission and spread the word about its programs. Paden said she anticipates continued growth for REYS. “We are looking at deepening our relationships with the people who are currently present in our journey - whether that’s the students, staff, community members who volunteer or our community partners,” she said. “And we’re hoping to increase our reach and impact in the community.”Supporting REYS can take many forms, Paden remarked. “In-person involvement is huge for us. That would be volunteering to serve a meal or if someone is gifted in a certain skill, donating your time and talent to benefit our students,” she said. “Financial support is also a huge blessing for us in order for us to continue to have amazing programs for ourREYSstudents.”serves students in grades one through 12 through after-school programs, academic assistance, music instruction and more. “Our after-school programs launch on Monday, Aug. 29,” Paden said. “Come one, come all. Come see what we’re all about.” For more information about REYS, visit https://reys.org. PA

REYS holds a backpack giveaway annually in August, offering school supplies and backpacks to students in need throughout the community. This year, the organization held a special drive to encourage other groups to donate to the cause. The Summer Sprint to 600 was created to entice church groups, businesses and families to come together to purchase and donate new backpacks. The goal was originally 600 backpacks, since that’s the average number REYS distributes each year, but Paden noted that this year the need was greater. “We had 650 registrations for backpacks,” she shared. “We celebrate that we were able to meet that need. It’s a tangible need in our community, and we’re really grateful for those community members who donated backpacks.”

The church has been holding the event for 22 years, Gray said, noting that the project began as a way to serve local families. “We used to send clothing to (a mission) in Kentucky, and we had to pay to send the clothing down there,” she commented. “When we were giving away food boxes at Christmas, some of the families we were serving said they needed clothes for their kids. I thought, ‘Why are we sending clothes to Kentucky when there is a need right here in Manheim?’”Lastyear, the event served about 300 shoppers, Gray said, and more than 50 new Bibles as well as children’s Bible storybooks and devotional materials were given away. Shoppers also donated three boxes of food to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Donations of nonperishable food items will again be accepted this year, but are not required. “We would love to get back to serving over 600 people like we did in the past,” Gray stated. “It’s free and it’s open to anyone. We just want people to come and get what they need.” Donations of clothing and accessories will be accepted during the week of the event, beginning on Monday, Aug. 22. Donations may be dropped off by the front door of the church under the roof. Clean linens and towels will also be accepted, but no furniture will be accepted. Gray emphasized that there is a special need for baby, children’s and teen clothing as well as clothing in size 2X and larger in good condition.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS “This is a picnic in the cemetery,” said Kathy Hohenadel, describing Fête en Noir. “And we ask people to dress in black if theyFêtecan.”enNoir is a fundraiser for the Mount Bethel Cemetery, noted Hohenadel, who is a board member of the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery and the cemetery itself. The event will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, at the cemetery, 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Seating is limited for the Fête en Noir, and a discount will be available for tickets purchased through Wednesday, Aug. 31. Participants should bring their own picnic to enjoy at tables set up throughout the front half of the cemetery. “We supply tables, chairs and linens,” Hohenadel explained. “People can bring a canopy if they want to, or additional tables for their food. They can use their imagination to make the event as downhome or a chic as they want it to be.”

Paramount Senior Living, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown, has rescheduled its display of Jim Flowers’ house and covered bridge replicas. Inviting people to enter the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase are (from left) Christa Neville, Heather Lindsey and Joanie Kretzer.

As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries. The showcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.”
The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people loveart, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from Balance Dance. Lindsey encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-and-coming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager JoanieLindsey’sKretzer.goal is to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to everyone.” For more information on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, email Saturday,deadlineenter@gmail.com.hncinspirationzArtistsmayuptosixpieces.TheforsubmissionsisOct.1.

Sweigart is friends with John Wagner, a member of the board of The Potter’s House, a nonprofit organization that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and postrelease prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. Knowing the organization’s focus, Sweigart nominated it to receive support from the Legacy of CaringInFund.July, Sweigart presented a check for $6,500 to Lanny Millette, director of donor relations with The Potter’s House. “I was happy to nominate (The Potter’s House),” said“WeSweigart.sureappreciate it,” replied Millette, who noted that the funds will be used to help build up the program aspects that help men and women to be self-sufficient citizens again. “We are working on both curriculum and staffing,” reported Millette. “We are seeing positive improvements in student outcomes.”ThePotter’s House was started in Leola by executive director Lloyd Hoover. The tagline “From Captivity to Destiny” has long encapsulated the mission of The Potter’s House. What began with one house in Leola has expanded to include a house in New Holland and Still Waters Recovery Center in Brownstown. At Still Waters, Joel Jakubowski, men’s program director, oversees an intensive phase one program to address the roots of issues and provide a restorative foundation before the men move into phase two and full-time employment.According to Millette, addiction has been tied to an interruption of the natural maturation process, which can cause an individual to experience arrested growth and development. To remedy this, the program works to teach life skills, including financial management and how to negotiate interpersonal relationships. Once a student is employed, he or she can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. Because addiction impacts families in emotional, mental, social, and economic areas, The Potter’s House curriculum includes a program that incorporates family understanding in the recovery process. Millette noted that the pandemic has impacted the addiction situation in Lancaster County significantly, and he cited job loss and isolation as factors. He added that the correlation between substance abuse and incarceration is substantial. In addition to The Potter’s House campuses, the organization offers The House of Ruth, a ministry to women facing addiction issues. More information about The Potter’s House and The Potter’s House of Ruth may be found at houselancaster.com.www.thepotters frompg 1 Cliff Sweigart (right) of Weaver Group from Westfield Legacy of Caring Fund to Lanny Millette of The Potter’s House.

As part of its effort to provide patients with comprehensive health care services, the Allergy & Asthma Center, 2445 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer a free screening program to test for alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, sometimes called Alpha-1. Screenings will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals should call the office at 717-3931365 to schedule an appointment. Alpha-1 is a rare genetic (inherited) condition.
