Love Your Library Benefit Bash to offer fun for all
BY CATHY MOLITORISFormany years, the MilanofSchock Library has held a benefit auction over the summer. This year, the library staff decided to change things up a bit, said Kim Beach, operations coordinator. The Love Your Library Benefit Bash will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. on the grounds of the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
“This is something new we’re trying. It’s a very family-friendly event,” Beach noted. “There will be plenty of things for people of all ages to do. And we hope that our faithful auction-goers come to this and give this a shot. We’ll still be having touches of our auction at this event as well.”
The bash will include free games and live entertainment, along with a silent auction and some games for a nominal fee.

Stan Tucker will serve as master of ceremonies from 4 to 5:30 p.m., and the Sound of Roses jazz band will provide live music from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Balunguy will offer balloon artistry, and the library’s Miss Jan will have a variety of free activities for families.
Attendees will also be able to “Soak the (Town) Celebrity” by firing water balloons at local teachers, school administrators and the library’s executive director, Joseph McIlhenney.
Regular auction attendees will recognize aspects of the former fundraiser, including a silent auction, giveaway items and buy-me-now options.
“ We always get all kinds of interesting things from the community f or the auction,” Beach said. “We have baskets, a wicker and suede chair that is absolutely beautiful, artwork from local artists, and gift cards to local businesses and restaurants.”
The benefit bash will also include a Lego contest, where community members can vote on their favorite Lego creation. Lego designs, created over the summer by children and
Breakfast Bowl to highlight community garden
BY CATHY MOLITORISEarlier this year, Jarod Stine planted a community garden at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. Now you can sample the fruits of his labor during a Breakfast Bowl at the church. It will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, beginning at 9 a.m.
Stine, a graduate of the Getting Ahead and Staying Ahead classes through Friends of Donegal, reached out to the church and asked for permission to start the garden on the property last year. The church sponsors the Friends of Donegal’s Bridges Out of Poverty initiative, and the garden was a natural fit, said Nancy Shonk, Breakfast Bowl publicity chair. Friends of Donegal is an organization focused on harnessing the collective power and influence of the community to improve the lives of everyone through programs, classes and access to resources.
families, are showcased at the library for voting, and people will also be able to vote throughout the benefit bash.
A variety of food trucks will be onsite for the event, including The BBQ Trough, Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, Spud Muffin, Cupcakes by Casey and Sugar Swirl Cart. Mulberry Thrill of Marietta will sell ice cream novelties, and the Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library will sell popcorn.

Proceeds from the event will help fund ongoing and upcoming projects at the library. “This year, we had a tree we had to take down, and there
are always improvements needed around the library,” Beach said. “We also just finished our courtyard and had an unveiling. It looks amazing.” Legacy bricks for the courtyard will be available to order at the benefit bash.
Beach noted that Donegal High School will play Elizabethtown Area High School in a football game on Aug. 25, making the benefit bash the perfect first stop on a night of community fun.

“Come tailgate with us, play some games, have some food and have fun,
and then go to the game,” she said.
She emphasized that events like the benefit bash would not be possible without the support of sponsors and the community. Hershey Heating and Air Conditioning is the event’s platinum sponsor. “The community is so generous to the library every year,” Beach said. “They support us so very well, and we really feel honored that they do.”
For more information on the benefit bash, readers may visit https://mslibrary.org.
At the breakfast, attendees will enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns and sausage, along with tastings from the garden. There will also be an opportunity to win a fresh produce basket.
At 10 a.m., tours of the garden will be offered, and fresh produce will be for sale. Additional surprises and treats will be featured during the event as well.
Florin Church of the Brethren has been hosting monthly Breakfast Bowls for several years. The church members paused the program during the pandemic, but it resumed in August of 2022. “Our Breakfast Bowl has developed as a See Breakfast pg 6

Veterans’ Trust Fund grants awarded
Twelve Pennsylvania county Veterans Affairs offices have been awarded $150,000 in grants, and 21 charitable or Veteran Service Organizations have received $650,000 in grants from the Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF), administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA).
The VTF is funded by Pennsylvanians who voluntarily make a donation when

applying for or renewing their driver’s license, photo ID, or motor vehicle registration.

Additionally, the VTF receives proceeds from the sale of the Honoring Our Veterans and Honoring Our Women Veterans license plates and private donations. Since the grant program began in 2013, a total of more than $6.6 million has been awarded to organizations that serve Pennsylvania veterans.
Grantees slated to receive funding identified over $2 million in matching funds pledged toward grant-funded initiatives. Combined with the VTF grants, the fundraising efforts will result in more than $2.8 million for veterans’ initiatives in Pennsylvania over the next two years.
A total of $150,000 in grant funding was available for new, innovative, or expanded programs or services provided by county directors of Veterans Affairs or the Pennsylvania Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs. The three areas of emphasis for grantees in this category were veterans’ outreach, transportation services, and homelessness.
Among the grantees was the Chester County Office of Veterans Affairs, which receive $15,000 to provide outreach and awareness services to veterans.
The VTF grant also identified $650,000 in funding available to veteran service organizations with 501(c)(19) status and nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organizations with a mission of serving Pennsylvania veterans. Funding priorities for grants in this category were transportation services, behavioral health initiatives, homelessness, and employment and education.
The grantees include Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm in Conestoga, receiving $40,000 to provide interactive equine therapy to veterans; the Central Pennsylvania Food

Bank in Harrisburg, $40,000 to support the Military Share program; Good Karma Garage in Harrisburg, $39,100 to provide reduced vehicle repair costs and services to veterans; Guitars for Vets, Chapter 90, in Lancaster, $4,950 to provide therapeutic services to veterans; and rabbitCARES in York, $35,000 for transportation services to veterans.
All grant awards are contingent upon the completion of a fully executed grant agreement.

Providing a support system for children

Children experience more healthy and happy development when surrounded by caring family members and positive role models. Ready to help provide children with these supportive people is COBYS Family Services.

Headquartered at 1417 Oregon Road, Leola, COBYS provides a wide variety of support services for children in need in Lancaster County and surrounding counties. But what COBYS is really all about is giving all childeren a chance to grow into well-adjusted adults.
“We know that those support systems - families, biological or chosen - get you through life,” said Anne Stokes, the director of development and communications for COBYS, “so you can have kids who can relate to others and forge lifelong relationships. It’s the key to a successful way. We don’t want to give up on them. Kids are now coming into care with layers and layers of trauma.”
With three locations in Lancaster and one in Lebanon County, COBYS approaches its mission through adoption, foster care, counseling and family life education programs. Motivated by faith, COBYS works closely and cooperates with state and local social agencies to provide the best possible outcome for each individual case.

Geology walk planned
Jeri Jones will lead the annual geology walk at the Haldeman Mansion on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. The mansion is located at 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. No preregistration is required, although attendees are encouraged to arrive early to the event so they have time to register and visit the coffee shop.

To learn more, call Elaine Jackson at 717-426-3794.

“Any child may end up in foster care; it doesn’t really discriminate,” said Stokes. “They can come from any place. Perhaps their family has been in poverty. Maybe their parents or grandparents have alcohol or other substance abuse issues. Sometimes kids are left to raise themselves. These kids may be in foster care for a few months until their moms and dads can take them back. The goal is to return children to their biological families, if possible.”
According to the 2022 State of Welfare report by the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children, close to 500 children were in foster care in Lancaster County in 2021, and more than 20,000 kids in Pennsylvania received foster care during that same time frame.

“We receive a good portion of our funding from the state and county, but because of the high level of care that we provide, it doesn’t cover all the things we do,” said Stokes. “We empower adults and children to reach their full potential. When they come to us, they’re at a really tough spot in their lives. Our work is to make sure their lives are enriched as much as possible. It’s a challenge that we continue to look to meet.”
COBYS is staffed by over 100
Adoption and foster care are just two of the services that COBYS provides.

employees, about 10 of whom are licensed therapists.
“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”
COBYS was founded in 1979 in association with the Atlantic Northeast District Church of the Brethren. It has been headquartered at its current location inside the Oregon Mill since 1989.

“COBYS just started out doing very basic foster care,” said Stokes. “Over the years, the
need for services has grown, and our agency has grown to meet those needs. What we pride ourselves on most is how we deliver our care.”

Covered Bridge Classic celebrates the joy of riding
BY JEFF FALKThe Lancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400-member Lancaster Bicycle Club will stage the 44th edition of its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.
“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”
From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length35, 50, 65 or 100 milesthrough the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick Township, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.
All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.
“Lancaster is not flat,” said
Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”
The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.
Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating f or cycling safety. We have social events throughout the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”
In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal rides - the Three Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.
“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime
you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will conduct its annual expo and show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Admission to the event is free.

“People collect multiple things for all different reasons,” said Gordon Smith, a member of the Lancaster County Postcard Club who’s organizing the expo. “It depends on what draws their interest. Some people collect postcards for the post marks from different post offices. Some people collect them for the stamps. The show is an opportunity for people to get together and talk about postcards and explore postcards.”
Postcards will be displayed on 45 tables - about 10 more than in 2022 - by 20 vendors
“I’ve never seen so many postcards in one place,” said Smith, a 53-year-old resident of Wrightsville. “Some people have their favorite dealers. Everyone comes looking for different stuff. Most of them are there to buy, but there are also people from the community coming to sell their families’ collections. But there are also people who are curious; they’re just taking it all in.”
Nearly 250 postcard collectors and aficionados are expected to attend the Lancaster County Postcard Expo. The expo is one of a handful of postcard shows conducted in Lancaster County at different times each year.
“(A postcard is) a card that the postal service will mail without an envelope,” said Smith. “It used to be a way

Smith said he possesses postcards that were postmarked as far back as the 1870s.
“Some people make their own postcards,” said Smith. “I personally like the real photo postcards. It’s a pic-
