Pick up a chicken barbecue meal on Saturday, Aug. 15, and you’ll not only enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner. You’ll help fund the future for local students pursuing higher education.
The Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual chicken barbecue from 10 a.m. until sold out at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Prepaid meals must be picked up by 1 p.m.
Each meal will contain a half chicken from Peters’ BBQ, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll from The Gathering Place and a whoopie pie from Memorable Occasions by Marie.
Proceeds from the barbecue will support scholarships for students in the Mount Joy area. This year, the Chamber provided two $500

Dogs Are LKC Members’ Best Friends

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.
One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.
“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”
LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.
“Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.

LKC also holds educational community events like “Meet the Breeds” and “Responsible Pet Ownership Day.” In addition, LKC awards scholarships to students interested in the veterinary sciences and
assists with the funding of local police department K-9 programs.
“We can be a community resource,” said Martin. “Say you’re looking for a particular breed. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of opportunities to do things with dogs.”
More than 85 dues-paying members make up the Lancaster Kennel Club, which is governed by a code of ethics. They are owners,
breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs and, for the most part, Lancaster County residents.
There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by LKC members.
“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”
Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.
“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.” A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.
“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.” For additional information, go to www.lancaster kennelclub.org.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group PurpleAir Monitoring Initiative, which is placing air quality sensors throughout Lancaster County, is seeking volunteers to host additional air-sensing devices that it plans to purchase with a $2,600 Conservation Grant from the Sierra Club’s Pennsylvania Chapter.
PurpleAir is a hyper-local air quality monitoring network that transmits data through a Wi-Fi connection to a real-time, public access map. While not as robust as government-regulated sensors like the two currently in Lancaster County, PurpleAir’s sensors are considered fairly accurate for particulate matter, and they serve as a supplement to the government-regulated sensors. Areas in Lancaster County without the Lancaster Group’s PurpleAir sensors include Columbia, Conestoga, Drumore, East Petersburg, Gap, Intercourse, Landisville, Leola, Lititz, Marietta, Millersville, Mount Joy, Paradise, Quarryville, Washington Borough, and Willow Street. People residing in these locales who are interested in hosting one of the devices may email sierraclubevent@
gmail.com and ask for an application, which covers the requirements for becoming a monitor host. Other areas of the county with existing or proposed future sources of air pollution will also be considered.
When positioning of the additional PurpleAir sensors is complete, the Lancaster Group will have installed about 18 of them at various locations in the county. Assessing Lancaster County’s air quality became a goal of the Lancaster Group as a result of the American Lung Association’s annual surveys, which consistently give the county low marks for short-term particle pollution. The aim of the initiative is to increase the amount of particulate matter data available to the general public, providing a more complete picture of the dangers associated with fine air particles and their effects on the health of local residents.

“Jordan Helsel received the Business Education Award, given to the graduating senior who earns the highest grade in the business education course at Donegal High School,” explained Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Chamber. “Joselyn Gerig was awarded the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce $1,500 scholarship. She was chosen by a committee made up of Chamber members Galen Dise, Galen M. Dise LLC Accounting Services; Joseph McIlhenney, Milanof-Schock Library; Rose Madar, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Homesale Realty; Denise Snyder-Patch, The Hess Agency; and Rodney Garber, Activate Your Influence.”
Students Anavah Viselli and Adam Billaud were the recipients of this year’s scholarships for the Janus School.
The money from the barbecue also goes to support Chamber and community events, Emenheiser said.
She encourages people to pick up a meal but also to make time to enjoy festivities happening at the library during the barbecue.
“The library will also have their (End-of-Summer Reading) Bash on Aug. 15, and they have some fun things planned, so make a day of it!” she said.
Along with helping students in the community, the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce works to strengthen the greater Mount Joy region.
“Many people think of the Chamber as just a networking group, but we do so much more,” Emenheiser said. “We also serve as a resource, a promoter and a community partner,
working to connect people with the businesses, events and opportunities that make Mount Joy a great place to live, work, play and shop.”
She emphasized that the barbecue relies on Chamber members who sponsor it, as well as volunteers who make sure the event runs smoothly.
Sponsors include Brightspeed, which participates because the business believes in connecting people and communities, said Sabrina Anderson, local marketing manager.
“We’re proud to support the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce as they host their 31st annual chicken barbecue - an event that brings neighbors together, celebrates local businesses and creates opportunities for connection both online and in the heart of Mount Joy,” she shared.

“Construction is about building relationships just as much as building structures,” said Danny Tanner, GCM director of operations. “At GCM, we value the opportunity to serve our community, support local initiatives and work alongside others who are committed to making a positive impact, like the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce.”

of adding a playground to our property for years,” said Jenna Mummau, general coordinator. “This past fall, we had an incredibly generous anonymous donation that made it possible to dream beyond a simple playground.”
Seeking to create a place that would serve the church and the entire community, the playground committee discovered the community-build model through Play By Design, which has created other local playgrounds, including Tree House Lititz and the playground at Amos Herr Park.
“Instead of hiring a contractor to install a playground, neighbors, friends and church members would build it together,” Mummau shared. “That perfectly aligned with our vision of bringing people together and building community.”
In early July, people came out to construct Creation Park, building on advance work that included excavation and gathering materials and tools.
“The workdays went so well! More than 100 volunteers showed up each day of the build,” Mummau commented. “The rain was our biggest challenge; we worked so hard to keep our post holes from filling with water and mud. Despite heat, heavy rain and plenty of mud, we stayed ahead of schedule. People of all skill levels worked side by
side. Watching so many people take ownership of the project was one of the most rewarding parts of the entire experience.”
Built on an open grassy area on the church property, the playground was inspired by God’s creation.
“Throughout the playground you’ll find themes representing land, sea, sun, stars and animals woven into the design,” Mummau said. “It includes large play structures for both younger and older children, climbing features, swings, slides, a dual zipline, nature-inspired play elements and accessible features. … The playground also features a poured-in-place rubber safety surface and will be fully fenced.”
Creation Park’s features came from community requests.
“The playground was designed based on the drawings from children and input from parents in our community. Their feedback helped shape many of the features. For example, the double zipline is a direct result of the kids’ drawings,” Mummau said. “Whether you’re visiting for the first time or helped build it yourself, we hope Creation Park becomes one of those places where families love spending time together.”
Along with the anonymous donation, the playground was funded by
contributions from individuals and businesses who loaned tools, equipment and materials, including Hoober Inc. and Spayd’s Industrial, which provided the telehandler and crane.
While Mummau is grateful for the community support that made the playground a reality, she also credits Winston Harris, who served alongside her as general coordinator, and Randy Brubaker, playground lead, with the project’s success.
“This project would not have been possible without the dozens of committee members, crew leaders and hundreds of volunteers who gave their time and talents throughout the planning process and build week,” she added.
Now she’s looking forward to watching kids explore the playground and families enjoy time together at the site.
“While it’s located on Mount Joy Mennonite Church’s property, our hope is that it becomes a gathering place for families throughout Mount Joy and the surrounding communities,” she said. “By bringing people together and encouraging laughter and play, we believe that God will be glorified. That’s our goal. We hope Creation Park is a place where everyone feels welcome and experiences the love of Jesus Christ.”
Program to Explore Local Connection to Famous Writer
The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Michael Kaufhold as the guest speaker at the organization’s monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Kaufhold will present “Edgar A. Poe’s Formative Years and the Best Kept Secrets of His Link to Lancaster County.” Edgar Allan Poe’s grandparents lived in Lancaster County during the early days of the American Revolution, and as fierce patriots they had many of the same concerns felt by the young men who gathered around the Donegal Presbyterian Church Witness Tree.
Kaufhold will reflect on Poe’s connections in Lancaster County, which aided the famous author during trying financial times, and will discuss the scope of Poe’s contributions to American literature. The presentation will employ slides and visuals, including old movie posters. It will conclude with a question-and-answer time. Poe was an American poet, writer, and literary critic who was regarded as a pioneer of Gothic and romantic tales and an early contributor to the emergence of science fiction.
Kaufhold is a current Millersville Borough Council member and a
retired English teacher, who taught for 33 years at Penn Manor High School before retiring in 2013. He graduated from McCaskey High School in 1965 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at Millersville University.
Refreshments will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Schulz Named to Fulton Board
Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.
With the addition of Schulz, Fulton’s Board will have 11 members, and Schulz will serve on the audit and risk committees. He has also been appointed to the board of directors of Fulton’s banking subsidiary, Fulton Bank, N.A.
Schulz served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco International Inc. from 2016 to June 2020, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco from June 2020 to February 2026, and executive vice president and special adviser to the CEO of Wesco from February 2026 until
his retirement on May 31. Prior to joining Wesco, Schulz was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Armstrong Flooring Inc. and was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc. and vice president of finance of the Armstrong Building Products division.
Before joining Armstrong World Industries in 2011, he held various financial leadership roles with Procter & Gamble and the J.M. Smucker Company. He was also an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
Schulz joined the board of Sterling Infrastructure Inc. in 2025, and he was appointed as chair of the audit committee in 2026. He also serves on the company’s compensation and talent development committee.
Museum to Reschedule Activities
Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will remain closed until further notice following storm damage from severe storms on July 4.
As a result of the temporary closure, Life in the 1860s Day was canceled. Many of the planned activities - including civilian living history demonstrations and elements of the popular 19th-century baseball programming - are expected to be incorporated into America 250 Military
Days, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8 to 9. That expanded weekend will feature living history interpreters representing multiple periods of American military history, including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I, along with special programming commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.

You’ve heard of Christmas in July, but what about planning for Christmas when it’s July? That’s what the organizers of Christmas at The Star Barn Village are busy doing. They’re gearing up for the event, which will be held Saturday, Dec. 5. Tickets are on sale now, and people are encouraged to get tickets early as the event typically sells out.

Christmas at The Star Barn Village is a fundraiser for Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown nonprofit that raises funds for and supports orphaned children.
“With six festive breakfast seatings from 7:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., this magical holiday tradition offers families the chance to experience the splendor of The Star Barn Villagedecorated in full Christmas charm - while supporting a meaningful cause,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “This year, all
admissions include breakfast with Santa. Guests will enjoy a delicious meal followed by a full day of holiday fun, including pony rides, children’s crafts provided by Heritage Creek Farm Camp and Education Center, cookie decorating, a DJ-led dance party and professional family photos to capture the memories.”

Brittany’s Hope has been hosting Christmas at The Star Barn since 2015, and Myers said it’s always a popular event.
“If you come to Christmas at The Star Barn one time, prepare to make it a family tradition year after year,” she said. “We literally have people emailing, calling, even stopping me at Costco in January asking when tickets will go on sale for Christmas at The Star Barn because their whole family has done it for so long and they want to be sure they can get enough tickets for their whole group.”
She hopes even more families will start a tradition of attending the event.
