The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce will hold its chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 21, and people have been eagerly anticipating the annual event, said Kerry Meyers, executive director of the Chamber. “I started getting calls months ago, wondering if we had barbecue tickets yet,” she stated. “People called the Chamber, and they called the library. They heard it sold out last year, and they wanted to be sure they got tickets.” The barbecue will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the rear of the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. There will be options for drivethrough or walk-up pickup. The

GEARS will offer several activities. Registration and details are available at www.getintogears.org or by calling 717-367-0355. A wide variety of programs and activities will be offered for people of all ages in the fall. GEARS members should receive a copy of the fall 2021 brochure in the mail within a few weeks, and members can begin to register when they receive their brochure. In addition to online and phone registration, registration is available by fax or by stopping by the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Some classes and programs fill quickly. GEARS will accept team registrations for its Fall Coed Slow-Pitch Softball League until Friday, Aug. 27. League play will occur from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays to Thursdays from Tuesday, Sept. 7, to early November. Each team will play a 10-game schedule with playoffs. There is a team entry fee. GEARS is also accepting teams for its Fall Coed Sixes Volleyball League, scheduled to begin on Monday, Sept. 13, and conclude in early November. To be included in the league schedule, teams should submit a team roster and registration fee no later than Aug. 27. Teams should have a minimum of six and maximum of 15 players on their roster. Games will be on Mondays between 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. at Daubert Gym at Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St.; GEARS Community Center gym; and the gym at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, 600 E. High St. Teams must have two females on the court at all times. The league will be a 10-match season with playoffs. Those who call GEARS for additional information should ask to speak with Nate Diegel.

The Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia is the final resting place of many people who played key roles in Columbia’s history. You can help preserve that history by attending Fête en Noir, a fundraiser organized by the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 13, in the cemetery, located at 700 Locust St. Entrance to the grounds will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a bring-your-own-picnic from 6 to 9 p.m. The event was inspired by similar local fundraisers, said Kathy Hohenadel, a member of the Friends group. “We saw
the Fête en Blanc, which is held in Lancaster, and we thought, ‘What a cool idea,’” she recalled. “Since we’re doing this in a cemetery, we decided to do Fête en Noir and encourage people to wear black.” Looking at the calendar this year, the Friends saw that a Friday the 13th will occur in August, and they thought it made the perfect date for the event. Participants should bring their own picnic food to the Fête en Noir and should also make reservations as a group, Hohenadel noted, adding, “We’ll reserve tables and seat people by their group, whether it’s a group of four or a group of eight, or whatever size.” Music will be provided by a DJ, and partici-

pants will have the opportunity to hit the dance floor or stroll the grounds and take in the cemetery’s beauty. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to have an outside picnic with friends or family in a unique setting,” Hohenadel stated. “It’s starting early enough that there will be enough daylight if you want to walk around through the cemetery and look at the interesting tombstones and statuary and enjoy the history that’s there, or you can just sit and socialize with your friends and enjoy the music.” The event was not held last year due to the pandemic, but it drew about 80 people in 2019, Hohenadel said. She hopes to increase attendance this year, noting that the event helps the Friends group support the cemetery. Along with the admission charge, there will be other fundraising opportunities happening throughout the
event, she stated. Proceeds from the Fête en Noir help maintain the cemetery, which covers a wide area of property. “The major cost we have is the upkeep of the lawn,” Hohenadel explained. “In addition to mowing, there’s a lot of trimming around all of the crypts and tombstones. We spend $14,000 a year on lawn care.” The Fête en Noir is made possible through the sponsorship of the American Legion Paul Revere Leber Post 372, the Chickies Rock Moose Family Center and the Columbia Fraternal Association, as well as the Columbia Lions Club and Kleen-Rite Corporation. The rain date for the Fête en Noir is Saturday, Aug. 14. Reservations for the event are required by Friday, Aug. 6, and may be made by calling Jane Moore at 717-575-9760 or emailing Claire Storm at astorm495@comcast.net.

We have several stands who won’t be here this year because they just couldn’t find people to help them run them,” she explained. “We’ll also have fewer rides for the kids for the same reason.” Help is also needed to run the horseshoe pitch contest, she said, or the event will be canceled. Still, the fair will feature traditions such as the Fair Queen competition and popular food, including Grange milkshakes. “The petting zoo is always fun,” Nolt remarked. “We also have the Rock N Roll Pet Store. That’s new this year. He’ll be doing activities for kids.” Nolt encouraged fairgoers to check out the exhibits located in the adjacent Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church. “We have really nice exhibits, and some people may not be aware that they

The theme sums up the fair perfectly, said Sally Nolt, fair secretary, who noted that the fair committee is ready to go after having to cancel last year’s fair. “We’re back after a year off, and we’re back in full force,” she said. “You can see all of things you’d expect to see. We rebooked all of the entertainment from last year.” The fair will feature rides, games, food, agricultural exhibits, livestock shows, competitions and more. “We really have something for all ages, from the baby contest to the Senior Citizens’ Day and all ages in between,” she stated. Nolt cautioned that although the fair is back in full form, some

Nolt, who has been secretary for the fair for 37 years, said the event attracts people from across the state who come for the fun. “We’re a free fair, and I think that’s a big draw,” she commented. “I often get people telling me, ‘Thank you’ because it’s free.” Planning for the fair happens year-round, she noted, adding that the community is invited to help with the fair or offer input at board meetings. “The fair provides an opportunity for the community to socialize,” she said. “It’s a chance for local businesses to showcase themselves. For a lot of churches and businesses that participate, this is their primary fundraiser. It’s an opportunity for kids to show their animals or auction them off. ... We just have wonderful community

Three auctions will be held as part of the 48th annual Elizabethtown Fair. The first auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24, on stage 2. At this time, all the baked goods entered in the competitive exhibits area will be auctioned. These items will include the Best of Show Decorated Cake; Blue Ribbon
Apple Pie; Angel Food Cake; Chocolate Cake; PA Preferred Junior Brownie, Cookie or Bar; and Mars Wrigley Confectionery entries. Fair president Kenneth Myer will serve as auctioneer, assisted by John Carl. The Sale of Champions will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 25, following the Supreme Champion events in the show ring. Meat rabbits, dairy feeder calves, beef, goats, market lambs, and
swine will be auctioned. Harry Bachman will serve as auctioneer, assisted by John Carl. Proceeds will benefit local youths. The annual Elizabethtown Fair Auction will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, on stage 2. It will offer many items donated by local artists, craftspeople, merchants and vendors. Also featured will be flower arrangements placed in dated crocks by local florists and the pre-
mium book watercolor painting, “Lil Pumpkins” by Nancy Landis, as well as Landis’ 2020 painting “Cornucopia.” The latter painting symbolizes the cornucopia of accomplishments on display throughout the fairgrounds. Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, is open with limited hours and limited activities. Some of the world’s top female tennis players will participate in the only professional tennis tournament in Pennsylvania this summer. After its cancellation last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge, a U.S. Tennis Association Pro Circuit event, will return to the Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 9, and end on Sunday, Aug. 15. Many of the world’s current and potential future stars will compete in the event. The players will compete in singles and doubles for a purse of $100,000 - the largest in the tournament’s 14-year history. Dozens of alumni from the event have gone on to achieve successful professional careers, including Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula, Madison Brengle, and Jennifer Brady. Brady is representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. “Most of the funds are raised locally, and we couldn’t do that without our main sponsors,” stated tournament director Wilson Pipkin. “It’s exciting to know that our local community could come together and we could raise funds to offer this free event.” A program that Pipkin would like to introduce to the tournament this year is “Serving Up Aces.” Pipkin

Although meals may be available to purchase at the event, Meyers highly recommends purchasing tickets in advance, and she emphasized that prepurchased meals must be picked up by 1 p.m. The chicken barbecue is the Chamber’s major fundraiser, she said, noting that the organization is supported with no taxpayer dollars. She has set a fundraising goal of $14,000 for this year’s event. “Proceeds help to cover Chamber office and visitors’ center expenses and fund our Music in Memorial Park series,” she explained. “The barbecue also helps fund the visits with Santa that we do and the seven scholarships we offer to local students,

construction work, knew he wanted to help. “It had been a vision of mine for many years to try to do something with the building,” he remarked, noting that his father attended school at the site. Nissley led a team of volunteers that started work in early 2020. Although the pandemic stalled the project a bit, the group has spent most of the past year tearing down drywall, ripping up carpets and rebuilding windows to their original size. Volunteers ripped out a lowered ceiling and restored it to its original height. The team also installed a handicappedaccessible ramp and restroom, removed the kitchen and installed a kitchenette, added air conditioning and renovated the existing bathroom. A piece of the original slate blackboard will be hung on the wall, several original posts have been used to rebuild the porch and an original cabinet has been restored. The team is

In a building off Erisman Road in Manheim, a team of volunteers is bringing the past back to life. Members of the Erisman Mennonite Church have been working to restore the Lincoln School, located across the street from the church at 8 S. Erisman Road. They will host an open house on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. The Lincoln School was built in 1884 as a one-room school and was used until 1952, when it was sold by
Rapho Township to the church. It served as a home for pastor John Eby and his wife, who remodeled it for residential use and lived in it until selling it back to the church in 1985. Although the property has housed Sunday school classes, youth group activities and the Erisman sewing circle, congregants were inspired when fellow church member Tina Snyder suggested that the congregation restore the schoolhouse as a project to bring the church together. Church member Dennis Nissley, whose background includes historic restoration

also working on rebuilding the bell tower and will install a bell purchased from another schoolhouse. Nissley, who is the public works director for Mount Joy Borough, said the project has been a labor of love, noting that the volunteers partnered with contractors for some of the work but did the majority themselves. “This really did pull us together as a church and gave everybody a chance to work together,” he stated. “I see this place being used for a variety of reasons. I see it being made available to other groups and used as a ministry for our church.” As the renovations were happening, the volunteers noticed that the road the church faces is used heavily by bicyclists, so they are also installing a bike rest stop next to the schoolhouse. It will feature a bike repair station, a water fountain, seating and a prayer garden. Nissley invites everyone to come out to the open house and see the transformation firsthand. “We did an open house back before we started the work, and a lot of neighbors stopped in,” he recalled. “I hope people will come out to this open house and see everything that’s been done to the place.”

Hannah Lloyd completed her ROTC cadet training and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army on May 15. Lloyd was enrolled in the ROTC program through Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. It is customary for newly commissioned officers to select someone who has contributed to their success to pin the gold bars on their uniform. For this honor, 1st Lt. Audrey Lloyd - Hannah’s sister - and retired Col. Donna Hershey were selected. Hannah chose her father, David Lloyd, to render the first hand salute. After successful completion of the NCLEX nursing examination in July, Lloyd will be assigned to Fort Sam Houston in Texas for further training prior to receiving her permanent duty station assignment.
