Lions Will Hold Golf Tournament BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Grandview Bash & Benefit will feature live music from five entertainers.
A Party In The Vineyard or a day full of live entertainment to benefit a great cause, head to Grandview Vineyard’s annual Bash & Benefit. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 12:30 to 8 p.m. at the vineyard, 1489 Grandview Road, Mount Joy. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. “This will be fun family day for all ages,” said Sarah Haines, Grandview Vineyard owner. “It’s a lawn concert with lots of live music, food trucks, wine, local craft beer and more.” One hundred percent of ticket sales for VIP tickets as well as presale general admission tickets purchased through Friday, Sept. 16, will be

given to Children’s Miracle Network, Haines noted. “This is a great organization to support,” she stated. “They will bring out some of the children who have benefited from the organization to give a little testimonial between each band’s performance, so people can really connect with who they are supporting.” The lineup for the Grandview Bash & Benefit includes Adam Blessing, who will perform at 1 p.m.; Blind Accuracy at 2 p.m.; Bailey Run at 3 p.m.; Two Pints Shy at 4 p.m.; and Mark DeRose and the Dreadnoughts at 6 p.m. “We are partnering with our headliner band, Mark DeRose and the Dreadnoughts, because he really wanted to support Children’s Miracle
Network,” Haines stated. “He’ll be performing from 6 to 8 p.m., and he’s calling his performance the ‘Dreadnought Family Picnic.’” At 5:15 p.m., a live auction of a wine barrel will be held. “This will be an empty barrel ... that was used to store wine,” Haines explained, noting that the barrel could be purchased to either refill with wine or use as a decorative item. Along with the music and auction, the event will feature food trucks, including Rogue Wood Fired Pizza Co., and wine slushies. VIP admission will include access to the grounds at noon, reserved seating, light hors d’oeuvres from 2 to 4 p.m. and a Grandview Vineyard drink token. The event is sponsored
by First Citizens Community Bank in Mount Joy, and all of the musicians are donating their time. Haines encouraged people to purchase tickets early for the event. “We hope that as many people as possible will purchase their tickets ahead of time, so we can ensure that 100% of the money will go to Children’s Miracle Network,” she stated. “It’s going to be a fun day. Bring your lawn chairs. Bring your blankets. You can bring in your own food if you want to. Having played golf since college, Derek McCarty knows how much fun participating in a golf tournament can be. With that in mind, he organized a tournament through the Lions Club of Mount Joy last year. The second annual tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Highlands of Donegal Golf Club, 650 Pinkerton Road, Mount Joy. The tournament will be held rain or shine, with play beginning by shotgun start at 1 p.m. Golfers should arrive no later than noon to register. The tournament will operate in a scramble format, with teams of four golfers. Singles and doubles will be paired with other golfers, and participation is limited to the first 120 people who register. The cost of the tournament will include green fees, use of a cart, dinner, access to a practice range and prizes. Refreshments will be available in the pavilion and on the golf course during the round,

logical Services in Spring Grove, said the program will include a variety of stops around the mansion. “We’ll discuss the building’s stones and the house itself - where the rocks came from, what types of rocks they are,” he stated. “We’ll have a stop that considers the geological history of the Susquehanna River. You can see the river from the home’s front yard, so we’ll talk there where people can imagine how things used to be.” The presentation will also include information on the Billmeyer Quarry, which was located next to the mansion. The quarry was established by John Haldeman in the 1800s and was used to excavate limestone. Haldeman’s grandson, Samuel, became well known as a geologist in the area and was instrumental in promoting scientific work throughout central Pennsylvania. He is credited with discovering skolithos, a type of fossil. Jones noted that his walk will also include information on the geology of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which is the subject of a book Jones wrote in 2020. He will have copies of his book for sale at the event. Jones regularly gives geology presentations at the mansion, and he noted that new for this year, he’s including a rock and mineral contest at the end of the walk. “I’m going to have some samples of things I talked about on the walk, and I’m going to ask participants to identify what they are,” he explained, adding that prizes will be awarded for the top three scores. He emphasized that the August program will offer a wide range of information but will be accessible to everyone. “The walk is a good way to learn about local geology and get some behind-the-scenes information about the Haldeman Mansion as well as regional geology,” he stated. “All of my programs are very basic and are presented that way.” Jones, who has been offering geology programs for 44 years, said he encourages audience participation

Monday, Aug. 8, to Sunday, Aug. 14, at 950 Church St., Landisville. The USTA Pro Circuit event has been held at the rec center for over 10 years, attracting hundreds of avid tennis players and fans alike. The challenge was originally conceived by tournament director Wilson Pipkin, who held the first event as a $10,000 challenge in 2008. “I first came here in 1985, and I knew at some point that this facility was built for a pro event,” Pipkin said. “USTA called me 15 years ago and asked if we were available to host the tournament.” The challenge has seen substantial growth since its inception; it has consistently increased in scope each year, even reaching $100,000 for this year’s prize. Players travel from all over the world to compete in singles and doubles, accruing world ranking points and getting ready for the US Open, held in New York at the end of August. Several of the event’s alumnae have seen remarkable success in their careers, including Jennifer Brady, Elise Mertens, Jessica Pegula and Madison Brengle. Some players have recently achieved success at a global level, with Ons Jabeur finishing as a finalist at Wimbledon this year and garnering a substantial following during her time in London. Only weeks after last summer’s tournament in Landisville, participant Emma Raducanu went on to win the US Open. “The players love it here in Landisville,” Pipkin said. “When the facility in the Bronx was being See Tennis pg 7

Joy Rotary Club, which held the event for many years. “I’m an avid golfer, and I played in their tournament for a number of years,” he recalled. “They eventually stopped doing it because of a lack of volunteers. I knew that the Mount Joy community would come out and support an

event like this, so I stepped in to help organize a new tournament.” Last year’s event raised $3,500 and featured participation from 60 golfers. “I’m hoping to get more than 100 golfers this year, and I’m also hoping to increase the number of sponsors,” McCarty said. Proceeds from the tournament will support a variety of community
projects, he noted. “Last year, we donated two generators to Kentucky for hurricane relief, and we also support local organizations including the library and REYS.” Other recent beneficiaries of the Lions Club of Mount Joy include Donegal Athletic Club, the Mount Joy Lions Swim Team, Lone Oak Animal-Assisted Therapeutic & Educational Services and the Fire Department Mount Joy. McCarty encourages golfers of any ability to sign up for the tournament, noting that the event takes a unique approach to winning. “For your average weekend warrior, you might not have a chance to win anything in a regular tournament, but this tournament gives everybody a chance at winning something,” he said, noting that prizes will be awarded to the top finishers as well as the top three finishers of a second flight when the field is cut in half by scores. “This tournament is a chance to get together with your friends, have a fun day and help support your community at the same time.” The registration deadline for the tournament is Monday, Sept. 5.
