Chicken That Changes the Future

Can a chicken dinner change a life? For the recipients of scholarships funded by the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce’s chicken barbecue - an event now in its 30th year - the answer is yes.

This year, six scholarships were awarded, totaling $4,500. You can help support the Chamber and its initiatives by purchasing tickets for the barbecue, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16. Meals will be available to go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. behind Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Preorders are strongly encouraged and must be picked up by 1 p.m.

Each meal will include a halfchicken prepared by Peters’ BBQ, a baked potato, applesauce, a whoopie pie from Memorable Occasions by Marcie and a roll from The Gathering Place. A

For Dan McCormack of Mount Joy, the winding, scenic roads of Lancaster County have long been a haven where he’s enjoyed riding his bike. But this summer, Dan’s rides are taking him much farther afield as he heads to Iowa to compete in the National Senior Games, a biennial event drawing more than 11,000 athletes age 50 and over from across the country.

The journey to this national stage wasn’t part of a long-term

plan. In fact, Dan hadn’t raced competitively in three decades.

What started as a personal challenge to reconnect with racing evolved into a larger mission, one shaped by his military background, recent health challenges and an unyielding drive to keep pushing forward.

Dan began cycling Lancaster’s rural roads in the early 1990s, and though he’d stepped away from competition, the desire to test himself never fully disappeared. As a veteran who served 21 years,

“Friends of Donegal is here to support and strengthen the community,” said Andrea Riefenstahl, president of the organization. “We do not duplicate services but work diligently to connect people to services in our community they might need. A gap in services helps Friends of Donegal look for ways to provide that service.”

The organization began in 2021, receiving 501(c)(3) status in early 2022. Its services cover the Donegal School District, including Mount Joy, Marietta and Maytown.

Friends of Donegal (FOD) provides three free programs to the community - Getting Ahead/ Staying Ahead, Donegal Power Packs and Donegal Community Gardens.

Getting Ahead/Staying Ahead is based on Ruby Payne’s “Bridges Out of Poverty.”

“This is a 14-week program that helps investigators evaluate their lives and develop goals that could potentially help them get out of poverty,” Riefenstahl explained. “After graduating, FOD keeps in contact with folks via the Staying Ahead monthly classes, where we bring in community speakers and work with members to give back to the community.”

For the Power Packs program, food is distributed weekly to families in need within the Donegal School District.

“During this past school year, we fed about 300 individuals, including children, adults and seniors,” Riefenstahl said.

Now in its fourth year, Donegal Community Gardens provides produce from three gardens,

Driving 4 Drama Will

Take the Stage

Have a vehicle of any kind? Bring it to the Driving 4 Drama Benefit Car Show, and you could win a prize while also supporting theater arts at Columbia High School.

The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. A rain date is set for Saturday, Aug. 16. No preregistration is necessary. Payment will be accepted by cash or check at the event.

“We get all kinds of vehicles,” said Shane Kinser, who is helping to organize the event. “We’ve had anything from classic cars to we had a guy bring a paraglider one

year. (Someone) brought his trash truck. We’ve had classic cars, mini trucks, lifted trucks, imported cars. We had a Harley last year that won Best Paint. We have everything.”

Added Shane’s father, Dave, “We had a kid enter his bicycle one year.”

Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, including Best of Show, which is honored with a 72-inch-high trophy.

“Best of Show, Best Paint, Best Engine and Best Interior are judged by the organizers,” explained Shane, who is joined in hosting the event by his dad and by James “Boomer” Weaver. “We also have 25-plus business-sponsored trophies, and we have a Director’s

half-chicken-only option will also be available.

Scholarship recipients include Elizabeth Pennell, who earned the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce Business Education Scholarship, awarded to the student who ranks first scholastically in the business education course at Donegal High School (DHS).

“I’m so grateful to have received the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce business scholarship,” she said. “Teaching has been a dream career of mine for years, but money can be tight when you’re raised by a single mom, and the Chamber of Commerce’s support puts me one step closer to that dream being a reality.”

Mia Seidel was awarded the Joseph Shaeffer Memorial Award Scholarship presented in memory of Joseph Shaeffer to the DHS graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and interest in social studies.

“Taking away part of the burden of expensive tuition will allow me put more focus on my studies and other opportunities that come with going to university,” she shared.

Sarah Ashley received the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship created to support and encourage future workforce leaders in our community. She expressed gratitude for the support, noting, “This scholarship will lighten the financial burden of college, allowing me to focus on academics and volunteering on my path towards my degree and ultimate career.”

Marie Gehman earned the Dorothy Metzler Memorial Community Service Scholarship, honoring a high school senior or college/postsecondary student who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism by dedicating his or her time and talents to improving his or her community and helping those in need.

Two scholarships were presented to students at The Janus School - Anavah Viselli and Aiden Grossman.

“At The Janus School, the scholarships supported through the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce chicken barbecue make an incredible difference for our students and their

families,” said Heather Strunk, head of school.

“Our students learn differently and thrive with the individualized support Janus provides, and scholarships like these help ensure that financial barriers don’t stand in the way of their success. Our faculty and staff volunteer at the barbecue each year because we deeply believe in giving back to our community. We appreciate the relationships we have in the community and are grateful to serve, and this event directly helps open doors for our students to reach their full potential at Janus.”

In addition to the scholarships, the barbecue proceeds help the Chamber provide community events like Music in Memorial Park, Spooktacular, Visit with Santa and Mount Joy Minnie, as well as other community and member programs.

“We’re incredibly thankful for our generous sponsors, the Chamber members who sell tickets (and the people who buy them!) and the Chamber members who volunteer - many of whom have contributed their time and energy year after year - who help make this event possible,” stated Michele Emenheiser, Chamber executive director. “It’s truly a team effort.”

Jamie Rutt, president of Rutt Insurance and past president of the board, encouraged people to get tickets to the barbecue.

“The Mount Joy Chamber barbecue is a great way to get a delicious meal and support the local community,” he said. “The half-chickens they serve sometimes were so big

they didn’t fit right in the containers. (There are) whoopie pies and delicious rolls from The Gathering Place that just melt in your mouth. You won’t be disappointed getting your lunch from the Mount Joy Chamber!”

Tickets for the barbecue may be purchased at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; the

Milanof-Schock Library; the Mount Joy Borough office, 21 E. Main St.; or the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 717-653-0773 or emailing info@mountjoychamber .com. Prepurchasing tickets is strongly encouraged, but a limited number of meals will be available at the event.

which is given away free to Power Packs, Mount Joy Senior Apartments and the Mount Joy Food Bank. Gardens are located at Donegal Presbyterian Church, which used one acre of the more than three acres donated to the organization to yield produce; Mount Joy Mennonite Church, where all the bulk vegetables are grown such as potatoes, carrots and beets; and Florin Church, which hosts an asparagus patch, heirloom tomatoes and personal garden plots.

“For 2025, we plan to double the size of the used space at Donegal Presbyterian,” Riefenstahl shared, adding that FOD has grown over the past four years.

“We have attracted more volunteers and donors as the community gets to know and understand our mission. We feed more people, at times up to 300 people a week; graduated 65 people from the Getting Ahead classes; and donated over 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to the community via the gardens.”

While the mission of FOD is to support community

members, the organization also works to ensure people who receive its services become self-sufficient.

“There are people/families who are struggling in our communities with things like food insecurity, paying rent or supporting their families due to a low-paying job or no job at all,” Riefenstahl said.

“FOD helps to provide families with nutritious food for free. We also provide Getting Ahead classes that allow individuals to determine their own goals to getting out of poverty.

A piece of the Getting Ahead program includes

working with individuals to give back to the community. We are trying to enhance the strength of the community.”

Thanks to community support from donors, volunteers and community partners, FOD has continued to make a positive impact, Riefenstahl said. This past year, the organization participated in several community events, including the Taste of Mount Joy car show, the RAISE28 Fair, Winterfest, Fourth Fridays and Chamber of Commerce mixers and luncheons.

Looking ahead, Riefenstahl noted that FOD has a number of goals, including hiring a new program coordinator, expanding grant writing efforts with a dedicated grant writer, updating its website and rebranding with a new logo, continued expansion of the gardens, enhanced offerings through the choice pantry partnership with Power Packs and increased community speaking engagements to share the nonprofit’s story and programs more broadly.

“(We) would love to purchase a building to house our nonprofit as well as create a safe space for everyone to show up in - young people and older people getting to know each other and support each other,” she said.

People can support FOD in three ways: by volunteering with the organization, by making financial donations and by encouraging others to attend FOD programs.

By working together to serve the needs of everyone, we all benefit, Riefenstahl said, adding, “Our goal is to build a stronger and better community for all.”

first in the U.S. Air Force, then as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, he saw an opportunity to blend athletic ambition with his lifelong dedication to service.

His goal: qualify for the 2026 National Veterans Games through participating in the 2025 National Senior Games. But with Pennsylvania lacking state cycling qualifiers, he looked south. He traveled to Tennessee, the closest location that allowed outof-state participants, last September, to compete in a 5K time trial and a 20K road race.

“I had no idea what to expect or how well I would do,” Dan recalled. “It has been 30 years since my last race, but I just wanted to experience the event and see if it was worth pursuing or to just quietly go back to enjoying riding my bike.”

In the time trial - a solo race against the clock - cyclists start in intervals, aiming to catch those ahead while avoiding being passed from behind. For the road race, Dan competed on a hilly course. To his surprise, he placed in each and earned a spot at the National Senior Games.

He began to train in earnest to become competitive at the national level.

“It’s a daily commitment: rides of varying intensities, terrain and distances, coupled with exercises and stretching to counter or supplement long hours in the saddle,” he shared. “You also have to believe in the process,

even when it hurts or you just don’t feel like training.”

But just months into his training, a different test emerged, and this one has no finish line.

In January, Dan began experiencing troubling symptoms, including unexplained weight loss, intense thirst and constant hunger. A visit to his doctor led to a trip to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“I asked how that was possible,” he said. “I thought Type 1 was a childhood disease.”

Unlike the more common Type 2 diabetes, which typically develops due to insulin resistance, Type 1 is a chronic condition in which the body stops producing insulin entirely. It can occur at any age, and there is no cure.

“I tried to return to work immediately but found that was not possible,” recalled Dan, a contractor for Leidos supporting the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. “I had a new full-time job learning how to manage diabetes using a combination of insulin injections, exercise, rest and diet. It took a few weeks, and then I started back part time, testing my limits and constantly adjusting.”

His wife, Janet, became a crucial partner in the process. The couple dove into the world of diabetes education, attending a diabetes conference at Elizabethtown College.

Despite the diagnosis, Dan refused to give up on his cycling goals. He eventually returned to work full time and continued on his path toward the Senior Games.

“I used the forcing function of diabetes management to stay disciplined,” he said. “The Senior Games aren’t about winning. While earning a spot on the podium is nice, it’s quickly forgotten. It’s a time to participate and connect with people from all over the country who share similar interestsand have their own life challenges.”

The first “Senior Olympics” was held in Los Angeles in 1969, and the movement soon spread to other states. The first National Senior Games took place in 1987. This year’s event is occurring in and around Des Moines, Iowa, over 10 days at the end of July into early August. Dan also plans to participate in the next Veterans Games, held in Florida next year.

Although Janet isn’t able to attend the Senior Games with Dan due to a prior commitment, she’s an essential supporter in Dan’s cycling and health journey. The couple enjoys traveling, taking frequent trips to Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, where Dan is a certified tour guide in the city he spent summers in as a child, tooling around on his bicycle.

Locally, they have found encouragement from their community as Dan has faced his challenges.

“We are members of Proclamation Presbyterian Church and have received tremendous support from friends, neighbors and our church family,” he said.

No matter the results of his performance in Iowa, Dan is certain of one thing: He will continue to ride.

“I love riding the roads and trails of Lancaster County. … We are all blessed to live in the prettiest part of Pennsylvania,” he said. “I’m honored to represent Pennsylvania, veterans and people living with diabetes at the National Senior Games.”

Donegal Tools 4 School

Pick, where the director of the theater department gets to choose her favorite.”

If a representative from the sponsoring business attends the event, he or she may award the sponsored trophy, but if a representative is not available, that honor is given to drama students from the school’s theater program.

“We also have a kids’ pick,” Weaver shared. “Kids can pick their favorite car, and whichever entry gets the most votes will be the kids’ winner.”

Along with plenty of vehicles to peruse, people can participate in a 50/50 giveaway and try for a chance to win a variety of prizes donated by area businesses and individuals.

A DJ will also be on-site providing music.

Food will be available for purchase from Tank’s Taters, TacoRV, Halo’s Eatery and Kona Ice, and members of the Columbia High School theater booster club will sell concessions.

All proceeds will benefit the theater program.

“Last year, our donation was over $6,000,” Shane said. “This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the theater department.”

The car show is personal for Shane and Dave, both of whom are invested in the theater program.

Shane began participating as a student in fifth grade and contributed in both on-stage parts and backstage crew work.

His older brother, Travis, participated during his years in school and still helps with the school productions. Their younger brother, Derick, debuted on stage at Columbia High School when he played Tiny Tim in a production of “A Christmas Carol” as a kindergartner.

“The drama department really needs support from the community,” Dave said. “Donations help the kids put on two productions a year.”

Shane encouraged everyone to come to the show, noting that it offers something for everyone, a feeling he understands from his years in Columbia’s welcoming theater program.

“It’s a well-versed show,” he said. “It’s not a classiccar-only show. It’s kind of like theater. It’s a very welcoming show. We’re here for the kids. It’s a car show, but it’s mainly about the kids having a fun day and about us supporting the theater department.”

Donations are still being accepted for trophies and prizes. To learn more, call 717-684-3600.
