Kaedin Cote’s secret to success may seem a little quirky, but it works.
“One funny thing about me is that I talk to myself before and during races,” said the track and field athlete. “I hype myself up beforehand, and during the race I go through my cues and remind myself what I need to do at different points.”
This positive self-talk is doing its job. Kaedin, an incoming sophomore at Donegal High School, delivered a standout performance at the USATF National Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held in late June in Huntsville, Ala.
Competing for the Hershey Blaze Track Club, Kaedin captured All-American honors in two disciplines. He earned a podium finish on the track by placing eighth in the 15-to-16-year-old 400-meter
dash. He also notched a third-place finish in the 15-to-16 boys’ triple jump. At the USATF national level, the top eight finishers in each event earn All-American status.
“This was the first time I’ve competed at the outdoor USATF youth nationals,” Kaedin said. “Last year I competed at New Balance outdoor nationals in Philadelphia and finished 53 of about 106 athletes. This past fall I competed at the Adidas indoor nationals in Virginia where I placed 24 out of 87 athletes.”
He was confident going into the national event because he had done well at a USATF Association Junior Olympics meet, where he took first in the 400 and second in the triple jump.
And while he’s satisfied with his results at the national competition, he said he always sees room to improve.
“I was happy to medal in both events and (earn) All American because that was my goal, but

A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
“We want to expand people’s horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”
This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

From Ethiopian specialties to Caribbean flavors, Taste of the Nations will bring the cuisines of more than 10 countries together under one roof while raising funds for Hope Within Ministries. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has announced the recent promotions and awards earned by cadets and senior members at the group’s June 29 meeting.
Cadets John Barger of Manheim and Warren West of Lititz earned their promotion to cadet airman and received the Curry Award. Cadet Senior Airman Luca Hermosillo of Wrightsville was recognized as Cadet of the Month for April.
Cadet Staff Sgt. Rowan Bacci of Mount Joy was promoted to cadet technical sergeant and received the Rickenbacker Award.

Herb Guild Plans Meeting

“We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.
“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The
history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”
An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.
“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry.
All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

every meet, I go out with the hope of setting a personal record, and I fell short of that in both events, so that was disappointing,” he recalled.
“Plus, my hamstring cramped in the 400, so that slowed me down a lot.”
Kaedin, who is the son of David Cote and Karen Parker-Cote of Maytown, was happy to have a fan in the crowd cheering him on in Alabama.
“My mom went with me,” he said. “She’s my biggest fan and greatest supporter.” While his dad could not attend due to a work commitment, Kaedin was also accompanied by two of his Hershey Blaze teammates.
Kaedin began participating in track and field in seventh grade. He said there’s so much that appeals to him about the sport.
“I love that it’s a team sport, but also so individualized,” he shared. “I love the track culture. I’ve met so many people from different schools and different states, and we all support each other. We know what it’s
like to have a bad day, and we support one another through the tough times. We know what it’s like to (reach a personal record), and we celebrate each other’s victories. At race time we’re competitors 100%, but any other time, we’re friends and each other’s biggest supporters.”
Although his favoriteand best - events are the 400 and the triple jump, Kaedin can run any sprint from the 50 meter up to the 400, and he also participates in long jump and high jump.
When he’s not on the track, Kaedin enjoys playing soccer for both the Donegal boys’ team and club soccer, and he loves spending time with his older brother, Keaghan; his dogs, Umbreon and Cammie; and his cat, Mocha.
“I love to be outside,” he said. “So, whether hiking or riding (a) bike, shooting baskets, going for a walk or run, you’ll almost always find me outside somewhere.”
With a successful national meet under his belt, Kaedin is now shifting his focus to the next big stage. He qualified for the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, which are being held in Los Angeles this week.
“Then I want to go to a good D1 college and hopefully get noticed and at least go to the Olympic trials,” he said. “I mean, even if I finish last there - someone has to - at least I would have gone knowing only a few people even get the chance to experience it.”
GEARS opened registration for its fall programs on July 29. Programs will run from September to December and will include a variety of youth programs, youth sports, fitness classes, bus trips, special events, and continuing education classes.

Church Plans Tools 4 School Giveaway
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, will hold its annual Tools 4 School giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 to 11 a.m. No registration is required.
Students will be able to choose a backpack and then fill it with school supplies, including pocket folders, tablets, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, rulers and erasers.
Children may also browse used books and select a free book or two.
This is the church’s 18th year for the giveaway. More than 150 students received backpacks and school supplies last year.

Storytelling Night Planned
Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Felixa Valladares de Kunkle and Conrad Kanagy will relate short-form anecdotes drawn from their lives and experiences.
Kunkle began serving with LMC: A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches in March 2019 and currently serves as office coordinator, prayer facilitator, and Hispanic ministry support. Originally from Honduras, she is fluent in Spanish, English, and German and uses her language skills to help build connections and foster communication across cultures within the LMC community. She is passionate about encouraging prayer, supporting leaders, and helping people
Bible Festival Posts Concerts
The Mount Gretna Bible Festival will host concerts on upcoming Sundays at 7 p.m. in the historic Mount Gretna Tabernacle, Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue, Mount Gretna. The venue is open-air, and a freewill offering will be received during each performance.
The Lancaster British Brass Band will perform on Aug. 2. The band consists of 28 instrumentalists from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
The Jazz Ministers Big Band will be featured on Aug. 9. This group presents jazz numbers, standard Christian hymns, and gospel tunes.
On Aug. 16, the festival will host the Anthracite Marimba Ensemble. For over 20 years, this group has performed in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Its repertoire includes a wide variety of music, from the Baroque era to the modern era.

appearance on Aug. 23. The event will be the final Chorale concert of the group’s founder and conductor, Linda L. Tedford.
The New Holland Band will present patriotic and spiritual music on Aug. 30. The band was formed in 1829.
A patriotic concert will be held on Sept. 6. It will feature pianist Michael Faircloth and the brass quintet Brassworks. This program is rescheduled from July 5, when Mount Gretna was without power for a few days.

Kanagy is a professor emeritus of sociology at Elizabethtown College. He directed studies of Mennonite Church USA and a study of Anabaptists in 10 countries, and he was a longtime pastor at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. He also serves as publisher and executive editor of Santos Books. Conrad and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 37 years. They have an adult son and attend Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church. The event is free of charge, and donations will be received for the speakers as well as Mennonite Life’s ongoing storytelling and conservation efforts. Flower Club Sets Meeting

High St. All baking contest entries will be received at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., on Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Contests open to amateur bakers who are residents of Pennsylvania include the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest; the PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, and Bars Baking Contest; and the Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest. In addition, entries in these contests may not have won first place in their respective contest in any other 2026 fair.
Entries in the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie Contest must be submitted in a disposable pan and include at least 60% apples in the filling. All ingredients and decorations must be edible. The recipe for the pie and pie crust must be submitted with the entry; be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11-inch paper; and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions. The entrant’s name, address, and phone number must be printed on the back side of all pages. Pies will be judged on flavor, filling, crust, overall appearance, and creativity. The Blue Ribbon Apple Pie will be selected from the four first-place apple pies, which will be the first-place one-crust and two-crust pies in the adult and youth divisions.
The PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, and Bars Contest is open to individuals ages 8 to 18. The entry must be six cookies, brownies, or bars. Entries must be made from scratch and include at least two PA Preferred ingredients. Any decorations must be edible. Entries must be submitted for judging on a food-safe, disposable setting. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11-inch paper, and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions with the entrant’s name, address, and phone number printed on the back of all pages. The PA Preferred ingredients, including the products’ brand names, must be identified in the ingredient list. A list of acceptable products is available at www .papreferred.com. Judging criteria will include flavor; inside characteristics; overall appearance; and topping, icing, and decoration. The Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest entry must be a layered chocolate cake, with both the cake and frosting made from scratch. The cake recipe must feature chocolate or cocoa as a main ingredient, and the entire entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard or a disposable plate. All ingredients and decorations must be edible. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11inch paper, and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions with the entrant’s name, address, and phone number printed on the back side of all pages. Judging criteria
will be flavor, inside characteristics, texture, frosting, overall appearance, and creativity.
In the annual Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest, entrants must submit an angel food cake made from scratch and include Pennsylvania-produced eggs if possible. All ingredients and decorations must be edible. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, be printed on one side of 8.5-by-11inch paper, and list all ingredients, quantities, and preparation instructions with the entrant’s name, address, and phone number printed on the back side of all pages. Judging criteria will be flavor; inside characteristics; overall appearance; and topping, icing, or decoration. Entrants may not have won first place in the same contest at any other fair in 2026.
The Mars Snacking Baking Contest will have three classes: Decorated Cake; Sheet, Layer, and Cupcakes; and Cookies, Brownies, and Bars. Classes are open to adults and youths except for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars, which is open to youths only. All entries must be made from scratch and include Mars Wrigley products in all batters. Where decorations are used, they must be Mars Wrigley products. A recipe must be submitted with all entries. Decorated entries will be judged on appearance, creativity, and use of product. All other entries will be judged on flavor, appearance, and use of product.
A Best of Show Decorated Cake Contest will also be held. The winner of the contest will be selected from all first-place decorated cakes in the youth and adult divisions entered in the Elizabethtown Fair.
Prizes will be awarded, and entries will be auctioned off at the annual Baked Goods Auction on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. Winners for most contests will advance to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg in January. For more information, call Barbara at 443-553-1497.

DMVA Available to Assist With Locating Forms
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) is available to provide assistance to veterans who have lost their DD Form 214 (DD-214), DD Form 215 (DD-215) or other military documents. DMVA may be able to help veterans locate these documents so they can get credit for time served and receive benefits they have earned.
The DD-214 is a Department of Defense document issued upon a service member’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces. It contains information needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans’ organizations. Without this document, there could be significant delays when a veteran seeks benefits earned through his or her military service. The DD-215 is used to correct errors or make additions to a DD-214.
The easiest way to manage military documents and avoid confusion in searching for them is to make sure they are safely filed immediately upon leaving the military.

Museum Posts Model Railroading Days
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer its Model Railroading Days event on Saturdays, Aug. 1, 8, 15, and 22. Visitors of all ages may watch model trains in action and see static displays from a variety of groups and clubs.
The Aug. 1 event will feature the DC Area Independent Hi-Railers, the Standard Gauge Module Association, and the Strasburg Model Railroad Club. The James R. Rose Scale & Gauge exhibit will be on display.
Aug. 8 will feature the Baltimore Area American Flyer Club and the Capital PenNScalers. A treemaking presentation will
take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The groups to be featured on Aug. 15 are the Keystone NTrack, Lebanon Valley Rail, the Lower Susquehanna Valley Modular Railroaders, the Northeast Corridor Historical Society, and the Strasburg Model Railroad Club.
On Aug. 22, Capitol Free-Mo and the Stillmeadow Crossing Modular Train Group will be featured. A large Lionel 0-72 layout will be displayed. Model Railroading Days is included in the regular museum admission.

Teasia Levin from Cheyenne, Wyo., and Barb Vernoski from Ocean Grove, N.J., will share
a military display and offer opportunities for audience participation. Levin, a national military liaison, will also present “The Struggle Is Real, but You Don’t Have to Do It Alone.”
