Marietta Special Fire Police seeks volunteers
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
If you’ve ever been directed around an accident scene in Marietta Borough or East Donegal Township, chances are, the person who directed you is a member of Marietta Special Fire Police. The organization has been around for almost 100 years, and now it could use your help.
“ We are down to five volunteers, and one is on extended medical leave, so we really have four active volunteers,” said Steve Bailey, captain of the Marietta Special Fire Police. “We are looking for people who want to help in their community. If we don’t get some new volunteers, this organization may be gone by next year.”

“We watch the backs of our first responders so that they can save lives without losing theirs.”
Volunteers must take a basic fire police course, with all training and equipment paid for by the organization. “You have to be dedicated to do this job,” Bailey said. “The state requires certain training, and there are no exceptions, but you have a year to complete it.”
Duties of the Marietta Special Fire
Police range from assisting with emergencies such as car accidents or fires to helping during community events.
“Basically, our responsibilities are to handle crowd control and traffic control at the scene, so anytime that our fire company is called out to a fire or an accident scene, we respond with them,” Bailey commented. “ We work to keep the traffic flow going, or at a fire scene, we work to keep civilians out of the way so the firefighters can do their job.” Volunteers also help with traffic control for parades and other community gatherings.
With a very small budget from the borough, the organization relies on public support and donations to operate. “We do not get anything from the fire tax,” Bailey shared, adding that the fire police are prohibited from charging for their

Chocolate Tour will raise funds for cancer research
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Saturday, Aug. 5, the 13th annual Donegal Insurance Chocolate Tour will kick off from the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave. It will feature six bike routes, ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, with participants rolling out between 7 and 8:30 a.m. A 2-mile fun walk will begin at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the tour will benefit cancer research.
“The routes wander through the scenic southcentral Pennsylvania countryside that highlight the beauty of the area, the history of farming and the tradition of chocolate that the area is well known for,” said Will Stone, Chocolate Tour committee member. “The longer routes inevitably take the cyclists through covered bridges. All routes have full support, including rest stops and mechanical support.”
The fun walk is dogfriendly and will take participants through the covered bridge at the Farm Show complex and along the Chiques Creek trail, explained Cheryl Gamber, Chocolate Tour committee member. She noted that
chocolate treats will be offered along the trail, and ice cream will be provided for all at the end of the route, including pup cups for canine participants.
“The Chocolate Tour is a family-friendly event,” Gamber said. “Cycling and walk participants are treated to lunch, hydrating beverages, Kreider’s ice cream, a (giveaway drawing) and, of course, lots of chocolate,” she stated.
Throughout its 13-year history, the Chocolate Tour has provided seed money for initial research projects that have led to larger cancer research grant awards for the Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute, she shared. “Currently, $2 million in cancer research grants are active at the College of Medicine as a result of Chocolate Tour funds,” Gamber said.
Some of the bike rides are dedicated to cyclists who have passed away from cancer in the past year, she remarked, noting that the 100-mile ride is dedicated to Jim Wilson of Hummelstown, while the 50-mile ride is dedicated to Rich Snively of Lititz. The 35-mile ride is dedicated to
Glenn Curtis of Bernville, and the 25-mile ride is dedicated to Bernhard Robertson of Johns Creek, Ga. The 10-mile ride is dedicated to John Richie of Hummelstown.
Stone emphasized that people can support the Chocolate Tour even if they cannot attend in person on Aug. 5. “Join us virtually by signing up, picking your favorite route and riding anytime between Aug. 6 and Aug. 8, and enjoy the scenery,” he said. “Please post any ride pictures on
social media, and don’t forget to use #23choctour.”
Vendors will also be onsite during the Chocolate Tour, including Penn State Department of Dermatology, Excel Physical Therapy, HQ Water Solutions and Hush Money Bikes. 2023 Chocolate Tour sponsors include Donegal Insurance Group, Cargill, PSECU and Northwest Bank. getting medically necessary supplies, access to medical records management software or any variety of other operational expenses. This is particularly true of our dental area of practice, where one visit might cost us upwards of $250 for consumable supplies for each patient.”
She noted that the need is great in the community, adding that Hope Within went from 616 medical visits in 2019 to more than 1,700 in 2022, along with 288 dental visits and 426 counseling
appointments. The organization is on track to exceed those numbers in 2023.
Zettick Schaller encouraged people to order a barbecue dinner, noting that it will make a difference in the community.
“Getting a meal helps your neighbors - the hard-working people who are single moms, delivery drivers, child care workers, waitstaff and more,” she said. “Statistics show that 27% of Pennsylvanians who work still struggle to survive in today’s world. ... With ris-
ing prices, these families are making tough decisions. Do I get the car fixed so I can get to work and put food on the table, or do I pay a monthly health insurance premium? These are the people Hope Within helps, filling the gap

Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to bring police and community members together. The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event. Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.
“National Night Out is about bringing the community closer to the first responders and giving people a chance to get to know police officers and members of the fire department,” Melhorn remarked. “It’s a way to build

He encourages everyone to come out to the event, noting, “It’s free to attend, and it’s an opportunity to have some fun, try some different food options and enjoy a night out with your family.”

MDJA receives grant to modernize operations
The Marietta-Donegal Joint Authority (MDJA) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $349,650 from Lancaster County for solids handling improvements at its wastewater treatment plant. The funds will be used to replace the aging belt filter press with new technology that will enable more efficient sludge dewatering with the goal of better serving customers. The project is funded in part through an ARPA grant from
the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners.
The MDJA operates a wastewater treatment plant that serves the needs of the local community. The plant receives wastewater from households and businesses in the area, and the solids that are removed from the wastewater are currently processed using the aging belt filter press. With the new technology, the MariettaDonegal Joint Authority will be
able to more effectively manage the solids and reduce the
volume of waste that needs to be disposed of.

Music frompg 1
on high-energy fiddle music, the band plays music based on original and centuries-old traditional Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, French Canadian and Americana tunes. On Aug. 13, the Stu Huggens Band will wrap up the series, with food provided by the Chamber. The band performs a mix of country, Americana and roots music.
“The Chamber does the concerts as a way to give back to the community who support our local businesses and Chamber members,” said Ashley Zell, Chamber executive director. “We also use this time to promote the members of the Mount Joy Chamber with our directories and more.”
She noted that the series would not be possible without community support. Major music sponsors and Diamond Members of the Chamber are Members 1st Federal Credit Union and townlively.com.
For the Aug. 13 event, the Chamber will once again host a free hot dog and ice cream social, with snacks and drinks also provided. Sponsors for the social include Giant, Clair and Mary Ginder, Hummer Meats and many more.
Zell encourages everyone to come out and enjoy a summer evening in the park. “You can come get your supper and support the Chamber member food trucks,” she said. “Bring your chairs or blankets, and sit under the trees, and enjoy your food and the live music.”
For more information on the music series, visit https://mountjoychamber.com or follow the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce on Facebook.
