hosts Music in Memorial Park. The concert series will be held on Sundays, July 26, Aug. 2 and Aug. 9, at the park, 101 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy. Food trucks will start serving at 5 p.m., and the music will begin at 5:30 p.m.
“End your weekend on a high note with live music in Memorial Park,” said Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Chamber. “It’s the perfect way to relax before the week ahead.” The concert series will kick off See Park pg 2

For five nights in August, Glossbrenner Church will take kids on a journey back in time. The church will host “Kingdom Chronicles,” a vacation Bible school (VBS) program, from 6 to 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 6. It will be held at the church, 713 Church St., Mount Joy, and a VBS celebration will take place on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m., followed by a free meal. Although the focus of the VBS is on the past, the message is important for the present, said Jessica Rockey, director of family ministries. “We are going back into medieval times to stand strong in the battle for truth, which is relevant for

For several months this past school year, students at Donegal Primary School (DPS) discovered how music connects everyone to the world around us. This was the sixth year of a residency program between Matt Wheeler (known as “Mr. Matt” in the program) and the school. In the past, the residency has focused on social-emotional learning vocabulary, but this year, the spotlight switched to Donegal Life Ready Traits. These include themes of responsibility, kindness and empathy, honesty, respect, self-control, positivity, problem solving and perseverance. During “Music Mondays With Mr. Matt,” W heeler created videos highlighting these traits through original songs he wrote. The videos aired during morning announcements. “This year, the PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program at DPS started a Citizen of the Month program, recognizing students that consistently demonstrate a positive character trait,” explained Rachel Peters, DPS music teacher and program coordinator. “Donegal has had the Life Ready Traits for the last several years, and it was well-suited for the characteristics we emphasized in this monthly recognition to be taken from that list.” Wheeler wrote three new songs for the residency, which complemented some of the students’ old favorites. The new songs are titled “Honesty,” “Positivity” and “Don’t Give Up.” “I wrote all three in March, and the song ‘Don’t Give Up’ is especially meaningful to me, because I wrote it at a time when my family was in the midst of a rough time with respect to

VisionCor ps held its annual Eye Drop fundraiser on June 5 at the Holiday Inn Lancaster. Almost 100 people, including those who are blind or vision impaired, rappelled in the event, which raises funds to support vision rehabilitation services for people with low vision in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties. People from across the region came to watch the rappellers. He also enjoys being a local TV personality at DPS when he visits the school. “ When I arrive at the school, kids I haven’t met before light up and say, ‘Hi, Mr. Matt!’” he shared. “Of course, the fact that I wear the same vest-tie-hat ‘uniform’ for every video and concert there does make me instantly recognizable.” At the end of each residency, Wheeler presents schoolwide in-person concerts. This year’s concerts were especially meaningful, he said. “ R ac he l p oi nte d o u t to the kids at one of the concerts that these songs had been written specifically for their school, and there’s something special about that,” he said. “In addition to the original music, though, I think it can be useful to have an artist come alongside the teachers, staff and administration, lending another voice to reinforce the good things they are teaching and exemplifying for their students in a different way.” “Music Mondays With M r. my mom’s increased care needs,” Wheeler recalled. “I sent my wife the lyrics of the song and said that sometimes you write the songs you need to hear.” W hile the songs provide entertainment for the students, the impact goes much deeper, Peters shared. “We know that (when) students learn vocabulary and concepts through music and melody, they are more apt to remember (them),” she said. “We want to use our time and resources wisely, and utilizing Mr. Matt to reinforce these important social and emotional concepts is another way to ensure we are reaching as many students in as many ways as possible.” Wheeler, who lives with his family in the Donegal School District, said the artist residency has been an immense source of joy for himself and everyone involved. “It’s great to be able to contribute to our community by investing in the lives of the young people of the neighborhoods and towns nearby,” he said. “In a way, this project is in keeping with the work of one of my heroes, Fred Rogers, who knew that it was vitally important to help young people to understand their feelings and choices and then to learn healthy ways to manage them.”

today,” she shared. “We have our Sunday school wing decorated like a castle, and we will even have a fire breathing dragon on our stage in the sanctuary where the children will get to enjoy a skit put on by our youth group and other church members before the start of every night.” Glossbrenner’s VBS is for children ages 4 through 13, and each evening will include snacks, crafts, interactive lessons, funfilled skits, games, songs and more. “ We welcome all children from the community to join us, whether or not they ever stepped foot into a church before,” Rockey said. “We welcome them to come inside and learn about the hope we have in Jesus while making some ne w fr iends along the way.” She noted that VBS provides an opportunity to promote faith while also connecting with the world outside the church. “We want to be a light in our community and let them know that Glossbren-
ner is here, even though we are not on Main Street,” Rockey commented. “We want to offer free events for families multiple times throughout the year for them to be able to create good memories without having to stress about costs or planning.” And VBS also offers a respite for parents, she noted. “It’s a nice break for the parents as we head toward the end of summer without much routine and constantly trying to plan fun activities for (their) children,” she explained. “Let us provide that for them in our safe, nurturing environment. We have so many great volunteers that love to engage with the children. … (Two hours) is long enough for parents to be able to have some uninterrupted date night time.” Beyond VBS, Glossbrenner invites people to stop in for a service on Sundays at 10 a.m. “If you are looking for the perfect church full of perfect people, I am sorry to say Glossbrenner is not
the church for you,” Rockey said. “We are a loving group of flawed people who are seeking Jesus and find strength, family and purpose in gathering together to learn more about Him as we earnestly try to be more like Him as we come together and worship.” She added that Glossbrenner welcomes everyone. “No matter where you are on your spiritual journey you can come as you are

The play will be performed from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 5 to 8, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 12 to 15. “See You in Bells” is a comedy centered on a wedding that faces numerous obstacles, including three generations of weddings with inexplicable disasters, a church building that is falling down, half the wedding party missing, and the bride’s sisters still fighting over what happened at the last wedding. But the bride’s brother is determined to end the sisters’ feud and the family curse. Roles are available for 16 actors: six males, six females, two teen girls, one teen boy, and a goodnatured minister. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the

Fair to Include Auctions, Tournaments assisted by Carl. Proceeds will benefit local youths. The annual Elizabethtown Fair auction will offer items donated by local artists, craftspeople, merchants and fair vendors. Myer will serve as auctioneer, assisted by Carl. The auction will begin on the Pennsylvania Lotter y Stage at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28. The auction will include Elizabethtown Fair commemorative crocks filled with ar rangements by local florists. Also featured at the annual auction will be the premium book cover artwork hand-painted on a bell by Nancy Landis, local artist, which will be auctioned off at 9 p.m. Landis is a lifelong Lancaster County resident. She has enjoyed providing the annual premium book cover for many years. T he Horseshoe Pitch Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Premiums will be awarded for singles at 40 feet and doubles at 40 feet. Horseshoes will be supplied by the fair, or shooters may use their own shoes, if desired. National Horseshoe Pitching Association (NHPA) rules will apply, except as specified by fair officials. Program to Focus on Removing Stitches Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Undoing Things” on Monday, July 27, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Carrie Rhinier will share techniques for removing many types of stitches without damaging the project. Rhinier will also discuss tools that can be used to safely rip out stitches and how to avoid the stitch-rip-stitch cycle. Attendees will be given the opportunity to tr y their hand in undoing stitches. They should bring a pair of snips with a fine point, as well as a seam ripper. Rhinier has been sewing for 51 years. She has a Bachelor of Science in interior design and has accumulated a wealth of sewing experience through various avenues, including operating her own sewing and alterations business
for the last 27 years. She is retired from Sight & Sound Theatres, where she was a sample maker. She has volunteered as a sewing instructor for a Lebanon 4-H program for the last nine years. L A S N ’s 2 0 2 6 t h e m e is “Sewing Revolution,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic.
L A SN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. Foundation Receives Funding to Expand Program Touchstone Foundation has been awarded $255,766 through the Pennsylvania Commission on Cr ime and Delinquency (PCCD) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program to support the expansion and strengthening of its Rise Above program. Community Foundation’s $35,000 Shaping Tomorrow Next Generation Grant, part of a broader $1 million investment into Lancaster County initiatives, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools through school-day workshops, after-school programming, summer intensives, and community-based groups for young adults. Additional support for Rise Above was also received in 2025 from the City Limits Foundation, helping strengthen the program’s long-term impact and reach. With the new VIP grant funding, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools, serving students in grades seven through 12 during the school day and through after-school programming. The expansion also includes new opportunities for young adults through community-based groups, extending support beyond high school. A key component of the expansion is the development of a Safe Space Facilitator training program.
